Modify Your Technique for Better Resultsby BanjoGirl (4 out of 5 stars)

This stripper works great for kale, collard greens and most chard (as long as the stem isn't too wide) however there is a technique to using it that makes it work much better.
After putting the stem into the smallest hole it will fit, pull the stem through in a series of short tugs, not a single long pull. If you pull it through all at once the leaves seem to jam up and cause the stem to break off too soon. I like the stem really thoroughly stripped out and it will do that if you tug-stop, tug-stop, tug-stop. That lets the leaves release from the hole and lets more of the stem pass through the hole before it breaks off.
If your leaves are all the same size and flat, it is still faster to stack them and cut the stems out with a knife. But for different sized or curly greens, this little tool work well.
I hope this review helps!
Didn't save me any time

I grow a lot of greens each year and we enjoy the fresh salads from them but stemming and cutting up the leaves is a pain. I had high hopes for this little device but after one or two uses, I am back to doing it the old fashioned way. First, I will say, it is well constructed and simple. I like simple. No moving parts - nothing to break. It is simply an almost flat disk with holes of various sizes. The problem I found with it is that despite their attempt to accommodate any size leaves, I found too many leaves that were too large for one hole but the next size down didn't do a good job of stripping them, leaving a lot of leaf remaining on the stem. Or, since the stem size decreases throughout its length, when starting with the hole that fits the bottom, by the time I got up to the leaf it was no longer a good fit. A few that appeared to fit nicely, once I got the stem through and started working on stripping it from its leaves, either the stem simply broke off, or it ripped/shredded the leaves during separation. The worst part is, it really wasn't saving me any time. I had pictured running my leaves through this and in 30 seconds having two piles - one of leaves and one of stems. The reality was it took as long to get the leaves off the stems with this device as it does using my knife and the cutting board. And given that I can do a cleaner job of it with my knife, this now sits unused in the back of a drawer.

I seem to waste a lot of greens when preparing diet for my blue tongued skink. Dandelion greens are a huge staple of her diet and this clever tool really does the job! She has a hard time eating the stem, so this really cuts down on the waste and prep time. I agree with others that instead of pulling straight, it's better to tug-pull, tug-pull, etc. The dandelion leaves came off the stem with no problem doing it this way and didn't bunch up. Handy to have!
Good gadget, but with limited necessity

I admit, I'm a sucker for Chef'n gadgets. I think I have most of them. They tend to make good quality stuff, and this was no exception. So if you need an herb stripper, this is a good one to get. But in my experience, most herbs are stripped faster by hand. The only herb this really helps me with is thyme: I can stick an entire sprig, with all its tributaries, through one of the holes and the leaves come off. Since thyme is the most tedious and difficult herb to strip in my garden, this alone made the purchase worth it for me. (Having the various size holes is essential for this, since the sprigs are all different sizes.) But if you're working with something simpler, like oregano or rosemary, I'd say save your money and use your hands.
Works great once you get the hang of it!

I bring home a lot of greens from the farmer's market. And sadly, I really hate to prep them. Enter this little gadget. While it takes some trial and error to get the hang of using it, I am here to report that it does actually work. My tips: (1) be sure pull the greens through from the darker green side; and (2) use the smallest hole that your stalk will fit through. Enjoy, fellow kale lovers!
Life saver, time saver, kale saver!!!

There are so many reasons why we don't like to cook kale. Cleaning off the sand, drying the leaves, separating the stems, and of course the frustration of starting with a huge amount and ending up with one serving. This little device has split the prep time in half because it removes the stem from the leaves in one easy pull. The outer edges are just sharp enough to cut the leaves without slicing your fingers when you're taking the stems off. My husband actually asked "Can I separate the stems this time?" Hell yeah you can. I can't wait to try this out with tiny herbs too!
A hidden use for these-

I purchased one of these over three years ago and was so busy I am just now commenting on its capabilities as today I discovered these also have an additional hidden added function. My spouse and I are vegetarians and environmentally conscious so growing our very own fruits, vegetables, teas and herbs is very important to us. Many years ago I used to pull the leaves off of my kale by hand when I was purchasing boxes of organic farm produce, before I and my spouse had our own home. Shortly after I and my spouse got our own home and land I began growing. I do not throw away the stems of veggies such as kale, but instead sauté them thoroughly so they are tenderized or add them to my homemade soups. Something like the stems of Savannah mustard greens are not tough, but crispy so I often cut them with herb scissors and add them to salads along with the leafy greens. These style herb strippers are fantastic for stripping fresh rosemary, and the stems can be saved and used in things such as homemade potpourri or added to an outdoor grill to make vegetarian pizza.
The additional here to fore as far as I know previously unknown use for these type herb strippers that I have discovered is their ability to have a dual function cleaning non-stick pots and pans or outdoor grills, or even pizza stones. They function like those plastic grill cleaners. I find mine particularly useful when my plastic grill cleaner is dirty, my spouse and I have another go to we use to clean our non-stick Aroma Professional quickly and easily.
As far as stripping herbs from soft narrow stems like peppermint, it may not work as well unless you first dry the peppermint or dehydrate it in a dehydrator and use that way. - Julie Sands
Not very useful

This got mixed reviews, but was inexpensive enough that I decided to give it a try. I wanted it mostly for thyme. The problem is I grow my own fresh thyme, so the stems are not as stiff. You have to first take off leaves at top end to expose stem, Then you need to carefully thread top of stem through smallest hole. If you have side branches, then they just get broken off. By the time I do all this, I can manually strip thyme.
Kale may not work depending on the size of the stem. If the stem is too thick, it won't fit through. It is easier just to tear off manually.
I gave it 3 stars, because depending how skilled you are in the kitchen, it may be worth money.
Who needs a sous chef when you have this gadget?

Whenever possible, I like to use fresh herbs in cooking. For the last couple of years, I've grown my own herbs in pots on my patio and look for recipes to use them. Some herbs are easier to chop than others, and I am always looking for a new way to get the herbs off the stem and into my dish.
Herbs like rosemary, thyme, and tarragon can be removed from their stems by pulling the 'branch' backwards between two fingers. This works, but it can take some time and so many leave stick to your fingers when you use this method. Other herbs like parsley can just be chopped off the stems, but it is hard to keep from getting any of the stem in the mix.
I found the Chef'n Zipstrip Herb Stripper on Amazon and was intrigued enough to order it. This gadget is supposed to easily strip the flavorful leaves from the herb stems, and also measure the herb in the little receptacle attached to it. Great idea!
Having now used it, I can say it is a pretty useful tool. I make an herbed tomato dish that has fresh parsley, oregano, thyme, and chives in it. Obviously, I didn't need this gadget for the chives - I just took my herb mincer straight to them. But the rest of the herbs worked very well. Simply find the hole that best matches the thickness of your herb stem, and pull the stem through. It will strip the leaves as it pulls them through. If you are lucky, all of the leaves will fall into the attached bowl, but I recommend setting it on a cutting board or plate to catch the pieces that would otherwise fall on the counter.
The oregano worked extremely well, as did the parsley. I almost didn't use it for the parsley, but tried it just to see and was amazed at how well it worked for the parsley. It pinched the leaves easily off the stems and for the first time I didn't end up with lots of little parsley stems in the dish. Not a huge deal, but I'd rather have more leaves than stems. The thyme was a little trickier. Most of my thyme sprigs had pretty delicate stems that broke easily as I tried to pull them through the hole on the herb stripper. I ended up using my fingers for the thyme.
I've since made Bearnaise sauce with fresh tarragon and some roasted potatoes with fresh rosemary and found this tool works really well for both of those herbs.
The Chef'n Zipstrip Herb Stripper will be a staple in my kitchen's arsenal from now on. I highly recommend it to anyone who cooks with fresh herbs, unless you have a sous chef to prep for you.
SO AWESOME!

I have been growing herbs for culinary and medicinal use for years and just learned about tools like this last year. I decided to purchase this, after reviewing all the name brands, and crossed my fingers. I used it for the first time this past weekend on fresh oregano. It stripped AND CHOPPED it like a champ. Feeling emboldened, I then used it to strip the stems from two bunches of kale with NO problems! It was amazing! Best purchase in a long time. Can't wait until fall. It saved my aching fingers and back for sure!
