Product Description

SolSource Classic is the ultimate solar stove. It lets you cook delicious food in your backyard with only the power of the sun. The intense heat from SolSource Classic gets your burgers sizzling and your veggies piping hot! It works by focusing sunlight onto your cookware to deliver intense heat with its efficient reflectors. This sun-powered cooker can be used on the deck, patio, or terrace. Place it anywhere outside the home that receives direct sunlight for fast, delicious meals. Better still, SolSource Classic lets you cook your favorite foods without fuel, electricity, or waste. You don’t even need to keep an extra battery around, which makes this great for emergencies or power outages. It is large enough to cook meals for the entire family, so you can use it to host your annual summertime cookout. Thanks to its unique chef interface, cooking on SolSource Classic is easy and convenient. Quickstart – point the cooker to the sun and it heats up 5x faster than charcoal. So you can grill, fry, steam, and sauté your favorite meals outdoors. Control the heat by simply adjusting the panel alignment using the blackout mirror. This means you can use it as a slow precision cooker, a sizzling grill, a steaming stovetop, or a food warmer. It stands tall enough so you don’t have to crouch over to use it like other electric heaters and low cooktops. Just cook straight from your seat. The advanced self-healing polymers maximize the effectiveness of the reflective mirrors and ensure durability. It is easy to clean, too. Just use soapy water and a soft cloth. It’s 100% pollution-free and has been specially engineered to generate a net positive impact on the planet. Enjoy a solar lunch with SolSource Classic on your balcony, deck, or patio without dangerous fuel emissions tainting your food. This easy to assemble solar cooker can be used within seconds of initial setup. Harness solar-powered cooking and enjoy fresh air as you prepare all of your favorite meals.

Features

  • 100% SUN POWERED – Cook without propane, gas, fire, or electrical power. The SolSource Classic solar stove harnesses the power of the sun by reflecting and intensifying its rays toward your cookware. Simply point it towards the sun for fast, delicious meals on the back patio. Advanced self-healing polymers maximize the effects of the sun and ensure the durability of the mirrors.
  • 550°F TEMPERATURE (300°C) - Not only does this cooker reach temperatures comparable to kitchen ovens, it also reaches those temperatures five times faster than a charcoal grill. Plus, you can control the heat by adjusting the reflectors for perfectly grilled meats with that flavorful outer crisp and tender slow-cooked insides. Even better, there’s no need for crouching and bending over as you cook.
  • HEALTHY COOKING - Cooking with solar energy means there is no toxic smoke blowing in your face while you’re preparing meals. Plus, you won’t get soot or ash in your food like with charcoal grills. The 100% recyclable solar grill is engineered to have a net positive impact on the environment by emitting zero carbon emissions, making this sun powered oven good for both you and planet Earth.
  • BACKYARD SOLAR COOKER - The SolSource Classic is perfect for cooking in the backyard or on the terrace. Whether it is a hot summer day or sunny winter afternoon, the solar cooker can be used anytime the sun is visible. The cooker weighs 39.6 lbs., so it can be moved around the patio as needed to watch the kids play, create more space to accommodate guests, or find more optimal sunlight.
  • EASY TO CLEAN – Don’t worry about having to scrub the mirrors. All you need is soapy water and a cloth to wipe away the grease from cooking off of the SolSource Classic. Dry off the water with a soft towel and it is ready for the next use. The solar reflectors stay cool during use, so you won’t have to wait around for the surface of the cooktop to cool before you clean the mirrors.

Works well but expensive, came with missing and defective parts
by Dan Winkler (4 out of 5 stars)

Solar cooking is great and more people should do it! The Sol Source does work very well, despite some complaints I have.

Negatives:
- Mine arrived with missing and defective parts. I got them to send replacement parts but one of the replacements was defective too.
- Although I thought I was getting a polished aluminum dish, the surface of the dish is in fact plastic. The plastic is rugged enough that normal cooking oil splatter doesn't harm it but it can get tiny holes melted in it if something very hot falls on it. See attached photo. In this case, we think this melt was caused by an ember from a stick that a kid was holding in the focal point to make it smoke. So if you don't let kids do that, you probably won't have any melting problems. Even if you do get a tiny hole or two melted in the surface like I did, it's only cosmetic damage and will not have any appreciable impact on performance unless you do it probably thousands of times. I later tried a Sun Chef parabolic cooker which does have an aluminum dish but it was so underpowered that I couldn't even boil water. So I think that's why Solsource chose plastic reflectors over aluminum: aluminum doesn't work nearly as well, at least when I compared a Sun Chef to a Solsource.
- The dish does not have a large enough range of motion to catch the early morning and late afternoon sun. You end up having to prop one leg up on something which is awkward and annoying.
- The clamp that locks the vertical elevation in place is poorly designed. Mine would not grip at all when it arrived. With a lot of effort, I was able to tighten it a bit, which allowed it to grip but made it hard to operate as the whole clamp would rotate around the tube. This is sure to require regular fiddling with in the future.
- The pot stand does not securely accommodate smaller pots. It's also inherently wobbly because it's only secured loosely by pins.
- Too much plastic, including the entire dish, both the body and the reflective surface. Others have reported breaking the plastic parts already and I'm suspicious of the ability of plastic to last well over the years.
- Expensive. Other dish cookers cost considerably less and are made almost entirely of metal.
- They say you can use any kind of cookware with it but I found it left a permanent mark on my cast iron pan where the hot spot was, maybe because it was hot enough to burn off the seasoning. I got better results using a steel pan with an aluminum bottom to help distribute the heat. This is probably true of all high powered parabolic cookers.
- It's quite awkward for one person to lift and move this thing. I could do it with difficulty but it's not well designed for this.
- When moving the unit, it's easy to dislodge the dish. To get it back in place, you have to rock it back and forth more than you can do with the vertical support secured so you have to disconnect that too.

Positives:
- It works (but probably no better than similar models which cost much less)
- The notch in the dish allows it to fit into the back of my car
- Very good customer service

I also tried a Sun Chef solar cooker. It did NOT work and could not get hot enough to boil water. I was attracted to it because it has aluminum reflectors which I think might be more rugged than plastic but durability without functionality isn't worth anything.

Well designed

The SolSource Classic arrived a couple of days ago, and I excitedly put it together. I had read a review by an engineer that it was designed well, so I was curious to see how it was built. Indeed, it is well designed. It was easy to put together, and I was impressed at all care that had gone into the design. Every part was high quality. Examples: the piece that holds the cooking pots has little stair steps on each finger on which the pots rest. These stair steps grab and hold cooking pots very well independent of the diameter of the pot. Most of the pieces (except for the parabolic mirror pieces) are held together with high-quality snap-on fasteners that make it very easy to assemble or disassemble. The clear and thorough assembly manual has essentially no text so that it is effective for people of all languages. Today I hope to begin experimenting with cooking on the solar stove.

I like the idea of cooking with solar energy. However, the product arrived with two missing pins essential for putting the cooker together. I could not assemble the cooker, so I returned it.

We call it the death ray stove! Great for everything our sun oven won't do like hash browns, eggs, pancakes...frying pan stuff, and it boils water faster than our sun oven...Im going to try a popcorn pot to see what happens. We are very happy!!

Surprising

This cooker was delivered in perfect condition immediately. It was much bigger than I realized, and there was more assembly that I reckoned. However, the assembly instructions were exceptionally easy to follow, and we had the whole thing together, ready to use in about 20 minutes.

Even though I'd watched some youtube videos about this product before purchasing, I was shocked at how well it worked. On a sunny midday here in the MidAtlantic region, this thing heats much faster than a microwave and much hotter than our induction cooktop. The wok was smoking hot within just a few seconds. Water boils within just a minute. This is amazing! Of course, we are having to learn how to keep the wok itself moving while stir frying, because the heat is concentrated in a very small area. You can't tell by the Amazon photo, but there is a notch in the top of the parabola in which you stand to cook, so it is comfortable to use. Again, the food cooked so quickly, I didn't have time to overheat myself standing out there in the full sun.

Even though it is so big, it is easy for me to mount and unmount the parabola between uses by myself (I'm a very petite middle-aged woman.) The only drawback is that I don't have a convenient place to store the parabola between uses and should have thought that through.

The frame is very sturdy and stable; the legs automatically level the frame.

I'm so very pleased with this cooker. Whether you are trying to live a more 'sustainable' lifestyle, or whether you are inclined to the 'survivalist' mindset, or whether you are just interested in really cool applications of physics, this is a good buy.

Junk!

This product is very poorly designed, especially for the price. It was one of my worst investments. It is flimsy and doesn't have the adjustment range it should have. Plus, you cannot adjust the level of the cooking area, something you need to be able to do. I added a thick food-grade stainless steel plate and installed carriage bolts after tapping the holes, to be able to level the steel plate.

Wait until they improve the design before buying one

So Worth It!

I am a avid solar cooker. I believe it is responsible and I appreciate keeping the heat out of the house in the summer time. I had dealings with One Earth Designs (manufacturer) regarding some minor hiccups with my Solsource and I have to tell you I've not had this great customer service in a long time. My concerns went to the very top and I was contacted very shortly by the top to assist. This company stands by their product and as a consumer I appreciate that!

Now, on to the actual Solsource. It was a little hinky to put together but we managed and it works great now. There is a bit of a learning curve with it but I can say that about most things-so really not a big deal. It cooks great. I work out of my home so one of my favorite things to do is take the Solsource outside in the morning and fry up some bacon and an omelet. I've cooked pasta in it, rice, meat and so forth. I will continue to cook unusual things and will update my post with video/and or pictures so you can see just how great this works. I absolutely love this thing. I anticipate taking it camping with us. I do visit campsites that don't allow open flames due to gorgeous trees that they wish to preserve, so the Solsource is definitely coming along!

Some hints for the new user:

You may have to move the black mirror a bit to get it in just the right spot.

You will want to use traditionally a black pot or frying pan.

Cast iron does work but takes longer to heat up-your choice.

If you are using a pan that has a rubber or plastic handle make sure you point the handle AWAY from the mirror area. Trust me.

Make sure the area that you set it up is fairly level or your food will cook uneven.

Pro's:

It is the sun people-it's free. Use it.

House much cooler.

Gas bill reduction.

Can become very hot, very quickly.

Smaller footprint.

Lightweight.

Withstands high wind quite well.

The swivel. Love it.

I can do more than just bake (unlike my solar oven)

Easy clean up.

Cons:

Not the easiest thing I've ever put together but not the hardest either.

I haven't had much luck on partly sunny days.

A bit awkward bringing it out of the house (but so worth it)

Bottom line: If you care about the earth, if you care about your pocket book (long term gas or electric useage), if you wish to keep the heat out of your house or even if you care about impressing the neighbors-buy this thing and most importantly USE it every chance you get.

Bravo One Earth Designs! Bring more things to the market please!

Update 7/14/17: I am still using my SolSource and really like it. However-stop the presses- -I just found out they are now offering a SolSource Sport (smaller version) which honestly will make my life much easier. I take my current SolSource in/out of the house on a frequent basis and it is awkward obviously. So, to have a smaller version is amazing for use at my home, camping, family reunions and so on. Guess what I'll be ordering shortly?

Oh, and I do plan on adding a video-if only the sun would shine again soon!

Warning: Arrived with missing parts and we haven't heard back from the makers of this product!!!!!

The one star is for the delivery process of this cooker. I'd like to rate this cooker, but it was missing some key components. So we're out $399.00 for a cooker we can't use. There isn't a phone number for this company to get a hold of someone personally. I'm frustrated because I wrote the company several times and my spouse has done the same. Nothing. I'm also deeply disappointed because I've had my eye on this thing for over a year and we saved for an opportunity to buy it because it would work well in sunny Florida. When we finally had the funds together to make our purchase we were over the moon excited. We kept tracking the package in anticipation of its arrival. As soon as it arrived we read the manual and even watched the videos on the One Earth website to assemble it properly. It didn't take long to realize that the two pieces that hang the reflector on the bar were both missing. And then some other small pieces. So it sits in our living room in the big box it came in. Unusable. All this should be points to consider if you're thinking about buying this cooker. Especially if you're on a budget like we are and you don't have money to just toss away on something you can't even use. It's under a one year warranty so let's see if they honor it. I'd be happy to update this review when and if we're made whole. I'm sure it works beautifully. But as it stands, we can't even use it. And not hearing from One Earth on this matter doesn't make me feel confident about this purchase or the integrity of this company.
***Update*** I was finally able to get a hold of someone but I really had to work hard to track someone down that could help me with this problem. The phone number on the manual only leads to a recorded message letting you know that no one is available to help at this time. (I dialed that number over & over again and always the same result) And it turned out that all my emails and even my warranty claim were being sent to someone that's not with Solsource anymore (the person that contacted me told me that this problem would be corrected immediately). A warranty is a great thing. But what good is it if you can't even contact someone to make a claim? Finally, I just didn't know what else to do so I clicked on a link for a facebook page from the company's own website for a solar cooking community. In desperation, I just publically poured out our issue & wrote down what was happening to us with our purchase. Someone from the company finally contacted me through this facebook post. The parts were sent to us by overnight mail. This cooker really is amazing though. As soon as the parts arrived, we assembled our cooker to see how fast we could get water to boil. It was quick and we were so impressed with how hot this thing could get so fast! I love a happy ending as much as the next person. However, no customer should ever have to chase down a representative from any company, especially when the product is under warranty and it's pretty expensive. In fact, just this week I ordered a book from the christianbook website and received the wrong book. I called the number on their website, got to speak to a real person, gave the invoice number and the problem was solved. The phone call took a total of about 3-4 minutes. And this was a purchase that was under $50 with no warranty. I spent days trying to find someone from this company to help me. With each passing day, I felt a feeling of dispair setting in that we wouldn't get this problem resolved. What if I hadn't thought to go to that facebook link? With all that said, I still believe in this product and I'm so happy to own one of my own. It does exactly what it's supposed to do. We live in an area that sometimes has severe storms and power goes out for a period of time. This cooker gives you a certain peace of mind in the sense that you feel more prepared for all the "what ifs".I hope this review helps someone else.
