Great light, awful app.by Norman Rychlik (4 out of 5 stars)

Okay, I love the light itself. It does the full range of colors very well, including yellow, and I am happy with the effects that is does such as changing colors. It is beautiful in the corner of our room. However, the app is awful. After a lot of work I was able to figure out how the app works, sort of. They need to do a lot more work on the app to get this light to the next level.

This is a unique product that makes everyone smile especially when I played songs from my iTunes library ("Big Bang Theory" theme was a blast!). My 11-year-old loved it so much that he kept bugging me to turn it on. He was talking to a friend on Facetime and wanted to show it to her. Set up was a breeze ... for the iPhone.
1. Plug in the lamp
2. Press and hold the button on the lamp for three seconds until it comes on.
3. Go to the iOS Settings to connect Bluetooth with the lamp (be sure to be close to the lamp).
4. Download the Holi app from app store.
This worked with the iPhone, but not the latest iPad. I checked the FAQ on the website and did everything it says to do. Nothing worked.
I'd love to try to use it as a bedside lamp. Unfortunately, it requires being about 12 inches away from the wall (per the instructions), so that's not possible with the table by my bedside. In fact, there aren't many bedside tables and areas wide enough to meet that requirement. The instructions -- which have a lot of grammatical errors -- also say the lamp should be at least four inches from objects on all sides to provide enough ventilation.
You can create your own light show, but I prefer the ones that come with the app. I lucked out that when I received this, I also downloaded the iOS 8 update. There were no pre-designed creations with different colors and animation effects. And because of that, I found the Holi lamp boring as I couldn't create interesting enough displays to stay interested. But once the iOS 8 Holi update came through, it was a whole new world.
The Wake Up app works well. The first time I tried it, the lamp had a blue glow even though the alarm was set for eight hours later. I contacted tech support and they said to turn off the lamp. It worked. I thought turning it off would also prevent the alarm from working. It's not in FAQ at this time. So to turn on Wake Up, tap Wake Up on the app, move until you get to the time you want to wake up and hit the sunlight icon. Then, hit Start to turn off the light. (I can't sleep with any kind of light. Even the light from the Holi's adapter was too bright for me. I had to cover it.)
I think the lamp needs wider base. I worry it's going to tip over and get damaged. The lamp is pricey, so it could stand to be more secure and less fragile. As fun and colorful as it is, I don't think it's worth the $249 price tag.

Update: I don't think the video is working. Not sure why as it showed up when I first posted the review. I'm leaving it up in case it's a technical issue that can be resolved.

BRIGHT!
by Computerdude1032 (5 out of 5 stars)

This works exactly as advertised and is actually brighter and more responsive than I expected. The iPhone app is also better than you'd expect from a small-name company like this. I was also surprised how reactive the device was to music, actual working fairly well, not as good as a professional light show, but good enough to set a nice mood. The wake up to dawn feature seems a bit gimmick, but I tried it out on a weekend (where it wasn't imperative that it worked), and it actually did work well. The only downside is if you're already stirring a bit, it will likely get you up earlier than you intended as it slowly brightens up.
Also worth pointing out, to integrate with Spotify, it does require a premium Spotify membership. I can't ding it a star for this since it is clearly noted on the box. I wish more manufacturers were as up front and honest about how their features worked :)
The perfect light for the perfect moment.

The Holi lamp has a tagline: "The perfect light for the perfect moment," and that is a pretty fitting description for this item. In appearance it is clean and sleek, with a brushed stainless finish. The only detractor from its appearance is the bright blue cord coming out of the base. There is no way to hide it since it comes out of the side instead of the back. A minor negative. It operates solely on electricity and so must be near a plug, but the cord is long.
As far as calling the Holi a lamp, that is sort of a misnomer. It is 500 lumens, but that is the equivalent of only a 40 watt bulb. No problem because I doubt you would ever use this in any way other than as a mood enhancer. Just out of curiosity, I looked up the story behind the word Holi and it is a festival of color in India. "The color, noise and entertainment that accompanies the celebration of Holi bears witness to a feeling of oneness and sense of brotherhood. The festival brings home the lesson of spiritual and social harmony." Appropriately, one of the modes available for you to choose for the light patterns is called Holi Festival, and it is colorful.
I had no problem setting up the lamp, turning it on, and accessing it through the app on my phone, as well as my ipad. First I tried out the various uncolored lights: moonlight; warm light; full light. I thought I would want to make use of the wake-up feature, which starts with the barest amount of light and gradually becomes the equivalent of full sunlight (40 watts of it), but discovered I would have to come back and reset this "alarm" every night. Every single night. I don't think so. But a neat idea.
Some color choices are: basic and pastel. Some of the modes of colored lights, all of which are dynamic and flow through colors are: Animated (rainbow, butterfly, twist); Mood (relaxation, inspiration, meditation); also strobe; Holi festival; and light compositions like Street Art. Design your own light composition and the colors will flow through your choices, but there are so many pre-programmed to choose from without doing that.
And, of course, the thing that will "make your next party more exciting" is the feature that allows you to sync the lights to music. We immediately thought Pool Party! but this is strictly an indoor lamp.
Overall, I love the light, I love the colors and the choices, and the patterns. I don't envision myself getting terribly creative with it, as far as designing my own anything, but there are certain situations - ahem - where I can see the benefit of a mood enhancer. The light from the Holi lamp could easily be made to be romantic. The only thing I can't say I like about it is the price. It is not something I would have had on my list of must-haves in the 250.-dollar-range.
Fun product with a small hitch

Overall, I really like Holi. It is undoubtedly a really cool product and an excellent party trick. You can use the mood lighting to provide ambiance to a room or use sync the light to your music, which actually looks and sounds almost seamless. However, at least with my experience with my Android device, the music app is pretty bad. When a song ends, it does not simply play the next song. Rather, you have to manually select a new track. Furthermore, there is no shuffle feature. The functionality of the app, I find, really hinders the strength of the device.
Nice Smart Lamp, Needs work for Android Users

As soon as I came across the Holî smart lamp, I thought 'how cool is this?'. While the ability to change colors with the music sounded amazing, personally, I was more interested in it's ability to wake me up with slowly as the lights got brighter and brighter. Upon getting the Holî smart lamp, I was very impressed with the quality. Very sturdy. Feels like premium materials were used. I could not wait to try it out.
I knew from the product's description that Holî was very iPhone centered, but it also states that it works with Android (4.0 and up). Being an Android user, I was feeling pretty good about being able to use Holî to its full potential. So, I got Holî, downloaded its app and started to play around. After a few minutes, I started to be a little disappointed.
While using Holî and its app, we were using a Motorola X (1st gen), currently on Android 4.4.3 and a Nexus 5 on Android 4.4.4. The app downloaded perfectly fine to the phones, everything set up fine. With the Holî mobile app, there are basically two main areas you are going to be playing around with: main color option (Collection) and music. On both devices, the main color area (Collection) worked perfectly. There are plenty of options here to really make Holî your own. However, the music portion of the app is where the problems started. For the most part with songs being played, the Holî wanted to stay with pinks and pulse. At first, I though maybe it was just the song. So, I tried multiple songs, and even different artists. Still pinks. Then I thought, it was on a pink from the main color option so may that was the issue. So, I changed the main color to a blue. It did it again. Only pink with music. Tried another phone, same thing.
It is worth noting that the Holî app website has a little bit of conflicting information regarding the app. According to Holî, it does support Android (4.0 and up), but it also lists supported devices for Android, such as the Samsung Galaxy S3 to S5 and Sony XPERIA Z1. Personally, I am not sure if you have to have a supported device plus Android 4.0 and up, or if only Android 4.0 and up. For me, I had no issue downloading the app and even Google Play stated the devices were supported.
If you are an Android user just a heads up that the app and therefore Holî, may not work 100% as expected, at least for the time being. I will update if I notice any differences with the app and usability in the future.

UPDATE!
I've changed the review from 4 stars to 5 because Holi is now working perfectly with the latest update to support iOS 8. There is a very nice variety of pre-designed displays, both with animations and without. I've also discovered that my issue with my own creations not flowing seamlessly was not with the colors but with the animation effects. Colors fade and blend into one another beautifully if there are one or no effects applied to the display. The only time they seemed to change abruptly is when changing from one effect to another. There probably isn't a very easy way to remedy this and it really isn't that bothersome, so I thought it unfair to detract a star for that. My primary issue was not being able to locate and select the pre-made designs, and now that it's been remedied, I have no complaints. It's a beautiful, calming addition to any decor. My 9-year-old had the fantastic idea to design a light show for Halloween to spook the little ones who come to the door for candy this year. It very effectively lights an entire room and when viewing from outside the house at night, a deep red light coming from the windows looks very spooky indeed! We love our Holi!

Previous Review:
I was really excited to try this out as I've never owned anything like this before. I'm very active in meditation and I've always planned on one day creating a calm, quiet space in my home for my meditation but life always seems to get in the way of those plans. When I saw this, my first thought was "instant meditation space!"
My first impressions were excellent. The packaging has a very premium feel to it. I'd think it was an Apple product if I didn't know any better. The quality and design truly is beautiful and simplistic all at once. The lamp was very easy to set up. You download a small app which was done before I could finish plugging in the lamp, turn on the lamp, and sync it via your bluetooth menu on your device as you would any other bluetooth accessory. After that, I was able to jump right in and play around with the settings.
Right away my son and I were having a lot of fun picking random colors and lighting up the entire room. This lamp is very very bright! It lights up a 12x12 room on it's own. The kids were excited to try out the music show and it didn't disappoint for the most part. There were some songs that popped up a message about not being able to analyze it, but the vast majority of songs worked just fine. The lights do indeed flash in sync with the song and the colors and patterns change depending on the song. "Starships" gave us moody reds and purples while "Happy" was cool greens and blues flowing in and out. It really was quite fun to dance to the lights in the dark room with the music playing. I can't say how often we'd actually do this, but when we do, it's a lot of fun!
I see my primary use for this lamp being mood setting. I've already replaced a traditional lamp with it and I'm loving the ambience it adds to the room. I always have my iPhone near me so I can turn it on and off or adjust the colors and brightness at any time. It has a sleep timer so you don't have to worry about it running all night when you're asleep, and it makes for a very pleasant experience when you're drifting off to the soothing light shows, with or without music. It also has a dawn simulator. I noticed one reviewer suggested this is an alarm and mentions it not being effective in waking you up, but it's not meant to be an alarm clock that wakes you up at a specific time. It's meant to wake you up gently over a period of time as it simulates the sun rising. I know I will appreciate this come winter when the sun is hidden behind the clouds for weeks on end. A great deal of research has been done on light therapy and how our brains react to it, so I'm a big believer in ambient light.
My only two complaints might be my own fault, but I'm not really sure. First, the box and even the app itself mentions a catalog of professionally designed light shows, but I can't find out how to download them. I have clicked every button, checked every tab, I even updated the software when it prompted me to, and I still have no idea how to download these themes. When I click a category, such as seasonal, all I see is the option to create my own. Creating my own is fun and all, but I was really looking forward to the specially themed shows that were designed by the developers.
My second gripe is minor. Creating light shows is quick, easy and intuitive, but the way the lights and effects come together is sometimes very abrupt. I would expect them to flow in and out smoothly, but when changing colors, say from pink to white, it's just a sudden blast of color. It doesn't ease into it at all. The same goes for the animations. While the ability to add a bunch of different lighting animations is exceedingly cool, they don't fade into each other. If you have the swirling pattern and transition to sparkling, it just changes. No fading, no transition, just an abrupt change. As I said, it's kind of minor, but at this price tag I would expect a bit more in this department. If they could fix this and make finding the catalog to download themes more obvious (if it even exists at this time at all as I can't even find it) it would be a perfect product for the niche who enjoy this kind of thing. Until then, it very much deserves 4 stars for innovation, beauty and ease of use. I love it!
Received a defective product

Ours doesn't work at all. When I first took it out of the box I turned it on and it lit up very brightly (a white light). When I held the button a little longer the light turned blue. So far so good. I turned it off as it was late and I planned to play with it more the next day. On the next day my husband tried to set up the app for the lamp and said it didn't work. He asked me to try and so on the third day I tried turning on the lamp and this time it was dead. We pressed the power button and held it for 3 seconds as per instruction but nothing happened. We tried plugging the lamp into different outlets in the house in case it was an outlet issue but still nothing.

A little pricey but the lights are so gorgeous.
Over all considering the price this probably isn't something that I would purchase on my own, but the product itself seems to be well made and is very user friendly.
