Sun diminishes the charge instead of charging it.by Alex (1 out of 5 stars)

My friend bought one of these and I thought it seemed really cool. So a week after she bought it I decided to get one as well. When my package arrived I quickly opened it and put it in the sun to fully charge it. I live in sunny San Diego so it didn't take long to fully charge. I purposefully didn't charge my phone that day so I could see how fast it would charge my phone. Seemed to make fairly quick work of charging my phone. The problem came the next day when I set it back out in the sun. It was about half charged at this point and I expected it to charge quickly as it did the day before. Hours went by and nothing happened. The next day I figured I'd try setting it in the sun again. Still nothing, except this time I lost even more of a charge as the battery bars started to disappear. Again I live in sunny San Diego so sunshine is one thing we do not lack. I asked my friend how her device was doing and come to find out hers was only able to charge her phone a few times. My advice, if you are looking to spend 30 bucks to charge your phone once then this is a great product. If you are looking for anything else I would look for something else.

Purchased 4 of this Levin Solstar Solar Panel Charger for $28 each ($112 Total) for Christmas and end of January Birthday Presents.
2 Malfunctioned, 1 only charged up to 2 lights, instead of 4 lights (full charge) despite leaving it in the strong direct sun
for 2 days. Even though I paid $28 dollars for each, I was only refunded $22.39 - ITEM WAS DEFECTED. I SHOULD NOT
BE CHARGED FOR ANY FEES. A FULL REFUND IS DUE. The Second one opened, broke by itself after being left on a window sill.
Opened by itself, broke after only 3 weeks of use. I HAVE NOT BEEN REFUNDED for the Second one at all and NOW it says "this item
is not eligible for refund". _ This is not ethical.
SEE PICTURES ATTACHED- March 5, 2015 I have RETURNED the 2nd Yellow one because the batter swolled up too, it opened by itself while exposed to the sun 2 days (because it didn't charge the first day)-- SEE PHOTOS. I will update my Review AFTER I get a Full Refund.
Updated Review: Went from 4 Stars to 1 Stars

I bought the Levin 6000mAh Solar Panel Dual USB Port Portable Charger.
I have a tough time believing this charges by solar. Also, there's no instructions that comes with this unit. I've had it in my car and also on the window sill for several days and couldn't get an additional blue bar. The blue bars I've learned indicates the charge of the unit.
That being said, I still like this unit because it gives more than 1 full iPhone charge when it's fully charged, it charges really fast and it charges the phone pretty fast. So a 4 star is still deserved. Had the solar worked effectively, I'd given it 5 stars.
Update:
I bought this mid 2014, and it's now almost late 2016. I downgraded my review from 4 stars to 2 stars because the item is: 1) not working well 2) Not rugged as advertised. Pretty much useless now.
Here's the problem. I barely use this product about 6-8 times a year the first year and only 2 twice the second. I take it with me camping as a back up. While this product is water resistant it certainly isn't sun or heat resistant. In cooler weather this works fine, especially when cloudy, which defeats the purpose. However, in warm or very sunny weather it leads to issues. My unit broke apart in the heat and will no longer hold much charge.
Basically, it only lasted about 2 years on very limited use. As a result it becomes a very expensive disposable battery.
So due to the long long charge time using solar (I didn't downgrade much based on this because you eventually learn from their product description that solar is not the main recharge method. However, it takes longer than what the description says it would take for 1/2 charge), due to the large size and due to the poor quality, I'm downgrading this to 1 Star. There are much better products out there.
Nice little battery

Nice little battery, though the solar part is pretty hit-or-miss. It seems like with these there is about a 50% chance of the solar panel not functioning (As was the case with mine. But the company was very accomodating and sent me an external solar panel to use for charging it that works very well).
As for the battery itself, it's great. I can get about 2 charges for my iPhone off it when fully charged. Though it IS kind of hard to actually tell when it's fully charged since the indicator lights seem to have very little relation to it's actual charge level. Often it will show only one bar of charge, but then jump up to three immediately after being plugged in. Other times it will show a full four bars, but as soon as you start using it to charge your phone it will fall to two.
Still, overall I really like this battery. I carry it with me everywhere in my backpack and it's saved my from running out of juice on many occasions.
Good charger, bad solar charger

Why did I buy it?
I bought it as an emergency charger for my phone during my summer road trip.
Does it work?
The charger is really sturdy: I brought it to the beach and it resisted to some water and to the sand. It also resisted to very high temperatures without any problem. It can be charged by an AC source or by solar power. It can charge up to 2 USB devices (output power = 1A per port). It includes a carabiner (which makes it very easy to hang it to your backpack) and a (not very powerful) flashlight. A micro usb cable and an iphone adapter are also provided. The main reason why I gave it just 3 stars is that it takes too much time to charge when powered by solar power: I left it for over 6 hours under the sun and it went from 25% to 50%.
Pros?
- Shock-proof and water resistant
- Easy to use when powered by an AC source
- Handy carabiner and flashlight
Cons?
- It takes a lot for solar power to charge it
- It looks like the charger can't charge a device while being charged by solar power
Bottom line:
If you are looking for a shock-resistant charger that you will mainly be charging with an external AC source, this is the charger for you. If you intend to charge it just using solar power, you will be disappointed.
Impressive, but does not fully charge if you are using the sun

I will be on a weeklong bike ride and I need some way to keep my cell phone going over the week since I will not have access to consistent electricity. My plan is to hang the charger from my camel back while I ride during the day. I chose this model because it was described as water resistant, relatively light weight (5.3 ounces) and sturdy.
I have been evaluating the Solar Charger over the last few weeks and found I am unable to fully charge it using the sun. It just will not get very far over 3 bars (out of 4 total bars). It will display three bars, but shortly after I start charging something it goes to 2 bars.
On the positive side, it does charge fully using a power supply and I am able to get two cell phone chargings from it. I have also been pleased with the manufacturing, weight and sturdiness of the product.
So, I am hoping that it will continue to at least charge half way from the sun, which is enough for full phone charge on my bike ride. While I am disappointed that it will fully charge, I will keep it since it was only $31 and I don't have a better option. Hopefully the manufacture will continue to improve their product and get it to where it needs to be.
Good for the money

This solar panel seems to take forever to charge via the sun. The best bet is to charge it overnight via a standard micro usb-b and then when you use it to charge your device, let it sit in the sun afterwards. I'm giving it 3 stars because i'm not sure if it's actually waterproof, i would believe it's water resistant.. There are more waterproof and faster charging solar panels, but this one is pretty good for the money. I think mine was dropped and now a corner is slightly cracked.
This charger worked great at Disney World keeping my phone charged. I would hang it from my backpack in the sun after I used to to charge my phone and the charger seemed to charge itself. The instructions included with the charger said the solar panel was just for emergencies. Knowing this, I always try to keep in charged ahead of outdoor activities.
The solar panel itself is a matte black finish and plastic, which seems unusual.
The charger has 4 led lights. The first one shines green when it is charging. If it is not getting enough light it flashes green. You can press the button to see how much the battery is charged. The most mine has charged via sun was one LED bar. However this is a 6000mah charger. Depending on the size battery of the device, one bar could be a complete charge. Included is a small metal clip. I plan on replacing this with a more secure clip, but the clip is metal and seems tough enough.. Included in the package was a short 10 inch USB cord. It works well and is a lot better than carrying around a 3 ft cord.

I left the device in the sun all day (around 5 hours of direct sunlight) and the charger only saved up around 6 seconds of charge. I repeated this daily for 2 weeks with no variance. I may have received a damaged item but the item I received is completely worthless.

Being as template as possible, as well as saying "Client" led me to believe that this is widespread. Look at a lot of the 3-5 star reviews. Look at the 4 star reviews starting from the earliest. They are all information-less, utter nonsense, or are complaints but say they were updated because of a replacement.
Some are complaints, but don't say they were bribed to change, here is one of my favorites:
"Only problem I have is I left it in the windshield of my car for a couple of days and overcharged the battery, It expanded bigger then the case. My fault, Do not over charge the battery."
Who claims guilt for their product exploding for leaving a SOLAR CHARGER in the sun? And this is a 4 star review, I wonder what a 3 star charger would have to do.
Also according to Amazon guidelines for reviews: "Don't include promotional content of any kind or reviews written in exchange for compensation". It appears all of Levin's reviews are written for compensation.
Faulty Product

So I bought this solar charger to take with me on a weekend long camping trip to charge my phone. Before setting off for my trip, I charged it up using the wall charger until it was full. Then I stuffed it in my backpack and never actually had to use it (it's amazing how long a phone will last on airplane mode). When I got back home my phone was low on battery so I decided to plug it in. I press the power button on the solar charger and the 4 lights come on. Then I hear my phone make the little noise that it's charging. I look away for maybe 5 seconds and my phone isn't charging anymore. In fact, all of the lights on the solar charger have turned off. I try pressing the power button, unplugging and plugging my phone back in but nothing. I then take it home and try plugging it into the charger to make it work. Still no lights turn on even when it is plugged it. I've tried everything but I guess I now have a "nonslip paperweight" because it sure isn't a solar charger anymore.
Maybe I just got a faulty unit as I've seen other reviewers talk about. I'm not sure if I wanna go with this brand again.
Doesn't actually seem to work, at all

Oh, so, so bad. I suppose my unit may have just come defective, but it was absolutely useless. I got one discharge out of it (after charging up from a wall plug), and then seven days in the great (uncloudy) outdoors wasn't enough to give this panel an ounce of juice. The green light would blink, indicating that it was charging, but it would just never charge. A few days later, I noticed that the flashlight would just randomly turn on. I'd turn if off, and it'd turn on again, using up whatever tiny remnants of power remained in the unit. Returned.
