Works, but security-wise it is untrustworthy

This device communicates to a slew of IP addresses in Taiwan, California, Canada, and New York regardless of your configuration. My recommendation is to firewall and isolate these devices as much as you can. Mine are on a 10.x.x.x VLAN and they ping an internal server which monitors Internet connectivity on another interface and will pull down its VLAN interface to make the outlets reset.

Zero effort to set up

I swear to you all, this literally took me 120 seconds to set up, and I'm not even joking. I configured my firewall to assign ONE dhcp address, plugged this into my network, plugged my cable modem's power into it, logged in via a web browser to the address my firewall handed out, set the IP address to the static one I wanted, changed the admin password, told it to wait 2 minutes after reset and reset infinitely, told it to ping google's primary dns server, and was DONE. This is a little on the $$$$$ side for what it does, but building the equivalent setup using something like a Raspberry pi plus parts would have been equally expensive all things considered. This thing is bone-dead simple and just works.

Works! And you don't have to have a phone to set it up.

If you have a DHCP router and can tell what IP the unit grabs, you can just point your web browser at it to set it up.

You can enable/disable web or telnet setup interfaces and you can set a username & password.

The trigger can be set for ping *or* http of any machine. One odd thing is there's only one adjustable time delay. So if you set the delay for 5 minutes, it will wait five minutes after a link failure to reset your router, then wait 5 minutes for the router to come back up. And that sounds perfectly reasonable to me

works like a charm

Added more to this comment on September 17, 2105 - I've changed phones twice, installed the management app the first time I changed phones to make sure I can still access the unit. Changed phones again recently but didn't even bother to configure the app - this thing just runs and does exactly what it says it does. I haven't bothered changing any configuration since I first put it in place. My 5 stars stand solid on this review.

The only advise I would provide the manufacturer is to lower the price to about $50 - I would've bought 2 of these gadgets if it didn't cost nearly $80. Or at least provide discounts when purchasing more than one.

pretty easy to use and setup. i have a router that requires a "drop-kick" every couple of days. this little gadget recycles the power when it can't reach the internet via my router. plugged it in and setup it up on friday... made a few adjustments over the weekend and has been working like a charm since. I haven't lost internet connectivity due to a router needing to be rebooted. This piece of gem does that for me. Ask me in 6 months how it's going, though.

The perfect device for power cycling a gateway automatically.

This has to be one the neatest gadgets for reconnecting a stalled router / DSL modem . I've wanted something like this for quite a while and was wondering how to implement it. Basically, it pings a nameserver and when it fails to get a response, restarts the router / modem.

Very easy to set up, has an app for configuration which is very self explanatory, If it isn't clear, there are links to YouTube videos to clarify.

It is nicely packaged in a very compact and well though out form factor. It even comes with a template for mounting screws and a spare fuse.

As it should, this seems to be the sort of device that never draws attention to itself and "just works". I'm hoping that in the next several months I won'y have to power cycle our rather cheap and nasty DSL modem (supplied by the phone company and drops it's connection every week or so)

It seems to work OK so far.

Rather than use the mobile apps to control it, I put it on a network where it was the only device, other than a DHCP server, and watched for the IP address request to figure out the IP address. Then, I use the device's web interface (see attached screenshot)

Also, you can toggle it on/off with a simple curl command "curl 192.168.2.50/invert.cgi"

OK with one caveat

Works well, except the app needs to offer a way to lengthen the time from when a ping outage occurs until a power cycle is triggered by the switch.

For example, if someone is working on your network equipment, upgrading firmware, etc., that process is likely to take more than a minute. It would be disastrous for the ezOutlet to power cycle the network equipment in the middle of a firmware upgrade.

Being able to specify a 5 or 10 minute ping outage as being OK, when desired, before power cycling the load would be reasonable. If this feature is added, I will raise this review to 5 stars.

Great product

I have been looking for a way to remotely recycle (turn off then on) my cable modem and router and this does just that. The ezOutlet takes it several steps further by allowing scheduled recycles and it also pings internet cloud servers. If the ezOutlet is unable to ping it will automatically recycle the outlet in an attempt to restore the connectivity. If connectivity is not restored it will wait for a successful ping then recycle. Great product and also has an easy to use mobile app.

Saves a 7 hour road trip
by Sean Embry (3 out of 5 stars)

Unit preforms exactly as described. NB: Care must be taken if used as a "reset only" device. You have to set the ezOutlet to give your back end systems time to reboot, recycle, and come up fully.

Also, it's not mentioned that these can be accessed via port 80 with no username and password by default on the local LAN. Fortunately I did a security audit before deploying these and was able to set a user name and password via HTTP (doesn't do HTTPS for local access.) I have not tested to see if remote access is encrypted, but I suspect not with no evidence this is so.

Note that the 2 outlet unit appears to be another system, so don't read anything into the one outlet to be true of the two outlet system.

Flawless

I actually purchased and am using two of these. They are installed on two different Internet routers and check for connectivity every five minutes, effectively resetting the router if there is a problem with the connection.

Setup was fast, under two minutes, in fact, and both switches are working flawlessly. The app makes the entire process quick and easy. I like how much configuration is possible, if desired. I would recommend this product to anyone who relies on their Internet router to always be online, and to reset automatically whenever needed.
