Best sleep tracking device, optimized alarm and sleep aid you can get!by Ryan (5 out of 5 stars)

Hands down, this device is amazing. It FINALLY solves the problem of tracking sleep with NO worries about wearing or charging a wearable. Just jump into bed and it works GREAT. I LOVE how it wakes me up slowly and gently. Since it is on my side of the bed and it wakes me up slowly, I always wake up in a relaxed way and end up turning it off before my wife even wakes up. The only negative with it is that it is stationary so I don't get to track sleep when I travel, however, this is GREATLY outweighed by how easy it is to use. I have found that when I track sleep with an UP, Garmin or the like, I ended up using them less and tracking sleep less often because of the inconvenience of a wearable and having to charge them while I slept anyway. Also, all the wearable devices woke me up suddenly with a harsh vibration, so I never woke up relaxed and rested. They also were not as accurate as the Aura has been for me, so they did not wake me up at my exact sleep cycle that was optimal to feel rested. Also, the Aura tracks your breathing and shows it in a really cool graph the next day. It is a super accurate device. If you want to track your sleep, the Aura is the right device.
Part of a great makeover for health

I have some middle age related sleep challenges. I love this thing to help me stay focused and understand my patterns relating them to what I do and how I feel. Also using the Withings scale and BPM monitor. All integrated via the Healthmate app, Other activity tracking is via my iPhone and Watch.
I am motivated by data analysis and tracking to reach better understanding and transformation, but this is not for everyone.
I like not having to wear a bracelet and never have to think about it doing its job. The data is on my phone a little while after I get up.
The sleep programs and smart alarm are a bonus!
I was really wanting to like it. Before now

I bought this product apparently 33 days ago and can no longer return it. I was really wanting to like it. Before now, I have had issues sleeping and have used an all-night audio product that had white noise that helped. When I used this product, I thought that it would help me but, the light faded on a timer and the audio also stopped as it thought I was asleep. It did not restart when I was obviously not asleep and ultimately, I am disappointed with the product and can no longer return it.
I did not rate this the lowest, one star because, I also bought the Withings Scale and the Blood Pressure monitor at the same time and I LOVE them. I apparently waited 3 days too long to return the Aura Smart Sleep System.
For me, what it came down to is that, I love the sleep pad and the analytics it provides. What I hated and want to return the product based upon is that I could not program the Sound to be constant all night and, even at it's highest volume, it did not compare to the volume produced by the Phillips charger and speaker I used and am again using now. My husband hates the sound I play so, with that said, I did not put my Phillips speaker on a love volume setting but, when using the Withings Aura audio, it had no effect on me as it disappears too quickly.
I realize I may be a unicorn in the world of needs on a sleep audio level but, if you could create a product that was not so obtrusive visually on my night stand that analyzes my sleep patterns AND I do not have to have the light effect, I would be all in.
As a result, I might have to go to ebay to sell this unit and get another solution that actually analyzes my sleep alone.
Again, I love my other Withings products but, this item does not live up to my expecations.
Mostly good so far

I'm going to start by saying that I don't ask too much of my sleep monitors. I don't need them to be scientifically accurate, I just need them to work simply and reliably. And, after a couple of brief hiccups, this has thus far proven to do just that.
This device is not a miracle worker by any stretch but it has served me well thus far. I have a condition where two of the symptoms are insomnia and poor sleep quality. As such, I cycle on and off of a variety of sleep medications and I need to know (as does my doctor) which ones are more effective and how effective. Which is where the monitor comes in. I can see how much deep and light sleep I can get (REM sleep was a welcome addition to this though not as necessary as the others) and for how long I sleep. The graph is easy to understand and is more or less correct. I say more or less because this device (like many others of it's kind) sometimes has issue determining whether I am asleep or simply lying in bed. And this is never going to be as accurate as something that measures brain waves. But this was true of my previous sleep tracker (jawbone up) so I'm not overly bothered by this. The heartbeat analysis is also pretty decent and, since heart problems run in my family, it's nice to have a basis for my resting heartbeat (my Apple Watch tracks my active heartbeat so I have a nice full picture now). The sleep mat itself is about 27" long, long enough to get to just about the center of my full sized bed. As I sleep on the edge this hasn't been an issue but if you're a middle sleeper or have a larger bed it might be too short. There was also a bit of an issue initially with set up where it wasn't tracking all of my sleep. But I disconnected, reconnected and recalibrated and now it works perfectly every time. But this was one of the reasons it lost a star.
The lamp itself was not the main reason I got this but it has been an unexpected pleasure. I also have an Elgato Eve and I find that it's temperature reading tend to be very close to the Auras (they are across the room from each other and one is near an open window which may account for the degree or so difference), and (as far as I can tell) the decibel and luminosity readings are also correct. The sleep and nap programs have also been very helpful to me. Having insomnia means that I frequently struggle to fall asleep but this (along with medication) has helped me immensely. I now look forward to the red light helping me drift off. It's sound programs are a bit subpar I think but, as I don't tend to like music or odd noises while I sleep, this hasn't been too much of an issue.
Now, the bad parts. Set up was a bit of hassle because it didn't work right initially. Additionally, I attempted to contact Withings support on two separate occasions (one to ask a question and another for help with the issue I had) and I never heard back from them. Considering I paid a decent amount of money for their product I would expect better service. IF they are not going to have an available service telephone number than they need to do better about answering their e-mail support messages. That was the main reason for the downgrade. Another issue I found is with the app. Now the app works decently well for what I use it for except for a couple of slight issues. One is the slight lag in connecting with the Withings Aura. Sometimes it doesn't want to connect at all (which means I have to reset and recalibrate and I don't like that). The second issue is with deletion. Sometimes I sit in bed for awhile and when I get up, aura tells the app that I've slept when I haven't. No big deal, I can delete it right? Nope. Everytime I try it reappears without fail whenever I relaunch the app. This is an issue I hope they resolve in future updates of the app.
Despite a few issues, all in all I like this device. I would give this 3.5 stars if I could (I think it deserves more than 3 but less than 4) but 3 will have to do. I would give it more except for the slight issue with start up, the app and the lack of reliable support from the company. For a product with such a high price tag normally, I would expect a bit better (particularly in regards to technical support).
Quality, product really helps set sleep/wake schedule

I like this. I'm slowly getting used to this system. The secret is setting it all up well in your smartphone app. I have an iphone, and the app works well. It also has a readily accessible "how to" reminder for using the tapping system that turns the lights and alarm on and off--Smart decision!
Because I keep my phone near me, and I don't want the light in my face all night, I rarely use the clock function.
I do like the included sleep sound options and especially like the slow wake-up function. I've owned this for over a month. I think this new gadget is helping me sleep well again, by gently nudging me to bed on time, and giving me a gentler wakeup call. Good product. Because it takes up bedside real estate, I would like a smaller footprint, but it's not a dealbreaker.
Great product, so-so app.

Great product, consistently provides what feels like good data. Does not provide actionable interpretations of data, so I have all of these graphs of REM and deep sleep, but I had to comb the internet to find out if my sleep cycles are normal and I'm still not sure, that's why I'm giving the Aura three stars. Quality and feel of the product is a 5. I like that it can attach two devices and that it has a bedside usb charger. The touch features are a 3, sometimes that's a little buggy and I'd rather have a few buttons than to constantly be "petting" the side of the periscope trying to turn down the volume or brightness. The syncing is a 2 star experience. The data will appear a few hours after you wake up -- if you get up and leave for work, you won't see your data until the evening. The Withings HealthMate app is a 2 as well - more below. The Aura lights are a little strange at first - I have a baby that wakes me up at least twice a night, so I rarely get the blue wake-up light, but it is a nice way to wake up.
Am I sleeping better? About an extra half hour of deep sleep on average. I bought a step tracker at the same time, so I don't know if it's the lights, the data or the increased exercise that is helping me sleep. I found another app, "Addapp" - the app provides a ton of actionable insight on all of the metrics (steps, sleep, and activity) that is actually useful. Withings doesn't really do sleep notes, so you don't get to see if caffeine, stress or late-night tv is affecting your sleep - I really dislike that. Also, Withings app doesn't really use data from ios Health to give you insights, which is why AddApp is so nice. I have a step tracker from another manufacturer, but Withings only uses the step data from the phone's pedometer, so it only knows how much the phone moves, not what my tracker is reporting.
Overall, this is a great product- I sleep a lot less than I realize and I love that the device tracks me without me having to start/stop it. The alarms are easily set and adjusted. It just takes some hacking to get the most out of the data, which feels really complicated right now, but overall, I'm sleeping better. I think that in time, companies will find better and better ways to aggregate and interpret the data. After reading about all of the sleep trackers out there, I really think that Withings is the way to go. My misfit flash gives the least useful data ever and I would not recommend a fitness tracker to monitor sleep (unless it's the Withings Pulse which is supposed to be awesome). Sleep cycle app is only so-so and you have to turn it on/off and constantly find a place under your sheets for a phone, but it provides more feedback on what is affecting your sleep based on what you record before bed.
Awesome concept, but did not excute well. felt like I paid $300 to be their beta tester..

really interesting concept, but cheaply executed. For $300? no, I will not recommend this to any one. for $300 it is a premium price paid for an alarm clock, I'd expect to see a very polished product, but instead, I feel like I am still a beta tester, everything is still in trail and error period of product phase. I love the concept, and idea of smoothly waking up, (and it works!) but don't feel like it's worth $300. Couple important points need to improve:
1. The app, is so complicated to use. Took me a week to get used to the app. The learning curve is high. Not user friendly
2. For $300, you would think you can play any music you want from the speaker while falling in sleep right? nope, only preset music, or you have to pay extra at spotify in order to play your customized music. That is really really lame. My old $30 iphone alarm could do better than that??
3. Those are the two major problems that made me give them a low review score. beside those, it is just a buggy design, sometimes it connects, other times it doesn't, had to restart the app, sometimes alarm is not on.. some times alarm is on, but cannot shut off, just weird, felt like I am still in beta testing phase of this product.
For instance, this morning the alarm woke me up, I was supposed to double tap to turn it off, but I missed it, I only gave it a one tap so now it's snoozed, but the blue light was still on. I tried to double tap to turn off the blue light, but it just wouldn't turn off. I assume it's waiting for snooze program to finish? so now I had a blue light on that I cannot shut off. I had to open the app to turn it off, and it just happened my app crushed at same time, I had to restart the app, after about 2 minutes fumble with it, I finally turned off the light. Yes, by then I was really awake, so it worked in that sense lol. but come on, for $300, this shouldn't happen right? It should just work!
I thought about returning it, but I still like the fun and cool factor of this product, and the smoothly waking up part really worked on me, besides, I was looking for a night stand lamp for over a year. I guess I will give it another try, hopefully they will update their software make it better, and please let me play my own music from my phone.
Overpriced alarm clock

It is basically an overpriced alarm clock. But it works well, it tracks your sleep cycles and integrated heart rate monitor seems to be very accurate. iPhone app is well designed and setup is easy. This is an excellent alarm clock, that cost as much as playstation (nearly double the price of Echo).
Don't bother buying

Should be 0 stars.
Nokia bought Withings and no longer support this product. They have replaced it with an inferior product with less features.
Bought this last year and it worked great, the best feature was the wake up alarm which woke you up at the best part of your sleep cycle, so you wouldn't wake up groggy or tired.
After a year of use the sleep sensor motor stopped inflating. Emailed support which told me i was out of warranty and since they no longer support the product they offered me a discount on the new sleep mat which is just a mat sensor that does not integrate with the aura clock and has no wake up feature.
TLDR: nokia bought the company that makes this and replaced it with an inferior product. Don't waste your money.
Very good, but ...

Very difficult to set up - still not working properly. That being said, it's fabulous ...
1. Falling asleep to the diminishing red light and crashing waves is very relaxing. I definitely fall asleep faster than I did listening to music.
2. Waking up to the intensifying white light and whimsical music is far less abrupt than the radio or buzzer and is quite effective.
