Terrific product, no more replacing candles!by Biotech Maven (5 out of 5 stars)

What a terrific product, used these to replace candles on my rooftop. I put in a 2" layer of glass marbles in the jar which spreads the light beautifully!
Home or trail ready

My family loves camping. The one bad thing about camping is the lack of sustainable lighting sources. When you need to take a trip to the bathroom or are getting ready for bed in the tent, having the batteries in your flashlight die is the worst. My husband and oldest two daughters are planning on hiking the Colorado Trail this summer so we were looking for a sustainable lighting source. Pros: The charging time was fairly quick. We live in Florida. The day after this came in we were heading to the beach so I brought it with me to see how well it would charge. I drained the battery first (it came pre-charged) and then took it out there with us. We were there for roughly 3 hours in direct sunlight. The battery lasted nearly 6 hours from that short charge. The light was bright enough to function with. I brought it into the bedroom where we have blackout curtains to see just how effectively it would light the room. It was much stronger than I expected. It was easy to work but not so easy, that it would accidentally turn on like a flashlight. I can't tell you how many batteries we've gone through because a flashlight accidentally turned on in a bag. That doesn't seem to be an issue with this. I like the design. I know it's a simple mason jar but we're big on simplicity when it comes to decorating. I can see using it as softer lighting at home or in the bedroom when I'm getting ready for work in the morning. Cons: It is made out of glass. A certain level of caution needs to be taken. My heart stopped when my 6 year old knocked it off the table. Luckily it seems sturdy enough for now but glass can only take so many bumps. The o-ring seal on the top is not secured to the top. In other words you can take it out or it could fall out if you're not careful. This was solved by dabbing some rubber cement to hold it in place. The mechanism on the inside is exposed. I'm worried about putting anything in the jar because the wires or circuit board could become damaged. Conclusion: Other than the few negative issues this is a great jar. My husband wants to take it on a few short hikes but he's planning on bringing it on the trail. If it can stand up to the rigors of a 486 mile trail, I'd say it's good to go!
Great when they work. Disappointing when they won't hold a charge.

(update 1/11/2017) - I tried contacting them several times about the one that stopped holding a charge and they won't respond. I take that to mean they don't stand behind their product.
I bought three in May of 2016. I used them maybe all of four times over the summer. In my experience they run for 3+ hours on a charge. I didn't use them in August or September. In October I went to use them on Halloween only to find that one of them would not stay lit. It turned on for a second and then goes out. It's either not holding a charge or it's draining the charge instantly.
They each produce only a small amount of light. Not enough to have on a table in the dark and play a game or anything like that.
I wish it had a sensor that would let it turn itself on and off based on the amount of light. I also wish it was possible to replace the batteries yourself when they die. I'm not sure if that's what happened with the one that stopped working but I can't even swap the batteries to tell if its that or if there's a problem with the solar panel.
Worked amazing for 3 months

I had been eyeing these jars, specifically these made in Africa, after seeing them on the Grommet and reading about their story. I was hooked and had to have some. When I ordered two them in March of this year (2017), they did not disappoint. I ordered two and have been planning on ordering 4 more for my backyard. The two I have look lovely hanging in my yard. I know I could have gone a cheaper route with just the lid inserts from other companies, but with this company providing jobs and a skill set to people in Africa, I did not mind paying the extra cost. Initially they held up through awful storms, rain, you name it and still performed just as well as they did the day I bought them. However, this week when I go to turn them on in the evenings as I always do, they stay on for two seconds and then turn off. I am so disappointed. If I had ordered a cheaper product, I would say 3 months would be a steal. However, only working 3 months at this price point, is NOT something I would recommend. I wish I could rate these higher because I love what the company is doing to help the African communities!
Long lasting light that fits with any decor

Having a fairly large backyard, coupled with the fact that we love to entertain, means I am always looking for budget friendly ways to illuminate these open spaces for Night time get-togethers.The cost of electric lighting was astronomical so I have used all sorts of solar lighting over the years. I happened to come across this solar jar almost by mistake and thought it would be the perfect way to illuminate one of the picnic tables. When I opened the box once it arrived, I was amazed to see that it had already been charged! Since we were already planning to have a small cookout that evening with some neighbors, I immediately placed it on the table we planned on using. The light emanating from the jar not only provided sufficient lighting to enjoy the meal, I was almost shocked to see that it was still glowing brightly at 2 AM! My husband wants to order more for our upcoming July 4 barbecue! Also let me point out that the light, for some reason, doesn't seem to attract bugs like some of my other standalone solar lighting fixtures do.
Sunshine and Joy in a Jar

In just a few weeks, this lovely lamp has become a centerpiece for our evenings.
My first impression was of the high-quality of the lamp. It's very well made and the design itself is ingenious. The operation couldn't be simpler - the on/off switch is a magnet on a hinge that is integrated with the bail. To turn it on, simply lower the magnet to make contact with the lid. The glass is also high quality and, in combination with the four LEDs inside, produces a delightful mottle light that creates a wonderful ambiance without sacrificing practicality.
During the day, the lamp sits on an indoor table near a south-facing window to re-charge. When darkness falls, it is the centerpiece of many of our activities. We use it outdoors for dining on the deck, walking in the garden, and strolling through the woods. It's rugged enough to be on the Must Take list for camping trips (it's perfect in the tent, even a large one). We use it indoors, too, for "unplugged" evenings playing board games or cards. I was thrilled that it arrived with some charge already because that first night we had storms that resulted in an electricity outage and the Solar Jar became an instant favorite. I now prefer the Solar Jar to a torch/flashlight because of the greater dispersal of light - I can see where my feet are about to step as well as all that is around me.
Customizing the Solar Jar is very easy, too. Simply remove the lid and add whatever objects you'd like. Coloured glass objects are especially beautiful when the light is on and enhance the delightful ambiance the Solar Jar creates. Decorating possibilities are endless. There's an undefinable quality of the light that I can only describe as "joyful".
Although the Solar Jar is more expensive than similar options, the price is directly proportionate to the quality and, for me, is clearly worth the investment.
My favorite portable light ever!

I am very impressed by this product...what an innovative and handy device! It is sturdy and well-made. It makes the perfect lantern for tent-camping or taking on long strolls on our country lane. I love that it's lightweight, so easy to use and comes equipped with a strong wire handle. I set it out in the sunlight to charge it when I first got it (even though it came with a 30% charge already). My husband needed a light that very evening while he was unloading a trailer, and instead of having to hold a flashlight for him, he hung this up instead, and it worked beautifully! The fact that I'll never have to buy batteries for it makes it well worth the price. The light that it casts has a bit of a mottled effect because it travels through the glass jar base, which in my opinion is very pretty. So, it's not only functional and practical, but lovely as well and would be great for lighting a romantic dinner or intimate evening. My very next use is to take it on our camping trip this week. I'm glad I won't have to try to light the tent with a cumbersome flashlight! It's so much better than a traditional propane camping lantern because it's so simple to use (a child can use it!) and so much safer! It is made of glass, so it still requires careful handling and adult supervision for young children, but the glass looks fairly thick and sturdy. It also appears that if I were to ever accidentally break the jar that I could use any wide-mouth mason jar to replace it, assuming that nothing else was damaged. I am very impressed and highly recommend this awesome product to anyone...the uses are endless!

I leave it in my window, which only gets 2-3 of direct sunlight, and it powers for a few hours but rarely the whole night (I use it as a nightlight in my bathroom.) After a couple of days in the sun, it will last longer. I thought the directions were a little cryptic but basically all you do is twist the top to line up the circles, the pop the lever to make them touch--that's what turns the light on.
It's a very cool invention, but in terms of the actual color and output, I wish it was a warm white instead of a cool white. It's almost blue in color. And it's very bright, which is cool, but a bit much for indoor use. I tied a piece of twine around it to diffuse it and warm up the color. Looks great now. I would definitely recommend covering it with fabric or twine.
Beautiful, Versatile, Sturdy Solar Lamp

I absolutely love this solar light and plan to get more for myself and to give as gifts. Aesthetically speaking, it is perfect for a Southern summer night. The jar reminds me of a mason jar, as it should. The soft light is beautiful as it hits the glass, which is another plus, and the solar powered LED bulbs are so discreet you'd never know they were there.
After receiving the lantern, I let it charge for a full day (per instructions) out in the direct sunlight. It's been bright, sunny, and hot in Central VA lately, so there was plenty of sun to go around. When I brought it inside, I turned it on and it lasted well into the next afternoon before dimming. Again, I'm impressed.
It's sturdy, easy to charge and turn on, and I love the fact that I can add my own decorative flair and personalize it. I can't wait to show it off to friends and family. I think this light serves a practical purpose, as well as decorative- great for everything from camping and power outages to outdoor parties and weddings.
Great and quirky solar light.

We have had two of these glass jar solar lights for about a month now. I cannt fault them. They shine right from out of the box and, once charged in a day's worth of sunshine, will glow brightly for a whole evening. We left ours on and they had not gone dim by the time we went to bed after midnight, so they glow at least 5 hours once charged.
The light is cold, as it's an LED, so you can fill the jar with your own decorations.
It has a handle, so you can hang it, or carry it as a lantern.
They're quirky and cool and I happily give this product 5 stars.
It has also been knocked off our patio wall a couple of times (onto a plastic mat and once onto soil) without breaking, so it seems robust, for a glass jar!

I really loved this jar, it's so pretty and worked perfectly as a light source on my balcony. I did keep it indoors and off when not in use near the window, where it could still reach sunlight. Unfortunately mine stopped working completely within 2 and a half months.
Wonderful light!

I really like this solar lantern! First of all I love that is sustainably made in South Africa and uses sustainable energy. Secondly, it is really pretty. It is very decorative and aesthetically pleasing, even charming. And on top of that, it is a great light source. It gives off a nice amount of light, which it diffuses nicely. It really does look like "bottled sunshine"! Last but not least, it is super easy to use. It comes pre-charged so you can try it out right away when you get it. The design is really clever and all you have to go to turn it on is close the magnetic clip and it lights up. Charging it is equally easy. Just put it outside in the sun and let it charge. It even works when there are clouds around. The only drawback might be that it's made of glass. It seems to be pretty sturdy glass, but it is glass non-the-less and thus not as rugged as I might like it to take camping or so. But since it has the word "jar" in the title, you know what you get when you order this. That point aside, it is a wonderful lantern that gives off beautiful light!
