GorillaPod Arm vs. Locking Arm
by Kyle Olson (3 out of 5 stars)
July 15, 2018

Amazon consolidates these reviews, the score is for the GorillaPod Arm.

Both GorillaPod and Locking Arms:

The suction cups hold well, but require untextured surfaces. Windshields, windows, mirrors, flat-ish car surfaces will work fine. A little curve is fine. Drywall has zero chance. Both arms offer a similar range of positions.

GorillaPod Arm:

This arm is the easiest to position. You just move to the position and leave it there. Unfortunately, there's no way to lock the arm in position. If you place the arm anywhere there is shaking or movement, the camera will fall out of position, sometimes very quickly. Even using the arm attached to the windshield inside of my car, driving on surface streets, the camera was hanging out of position within 10 minutes. You can only use this arm mounted on a stable. fixed location such as a window.

Locking Arm:

The locking arm is harder to position, as you need tighten the knob when you're in the right position. It's still fairly easy. Unlike the GorillaPod, the Locking arm will stay in the position fairly well, with only a minimum of wobble.

Final Recommendation:

The Locking Arm is cheaper and works better. Get the Locking Arm.

Fails On Vertical Surfaces
by Preston S. Page (1 out of 5 stars)
November 24, 2018

The plan I had initially for this rig was to hold a GoPro on the side of a car door. For an initial test, fixed it to a heavy, vertically oriented glass mirror with a GoPro Hero 1 attached. It fell down after 20 minutes. Trying again, I wetted the back and slowly turned the base. The extra care gave me 45 minutes before falling off the mirror. Based on the tests, I've abandoned the idea of using the suction cup on a car door.

Next I tested stinking the ring on a glass tabletop, with a GoPro Hero 1 leaning forward about 30 degrees off the center of the base. Unfortunately, I wasn't around for the exact moment of failure, but it was about 4 hours.

This Joby suction cup isn't secure enough to trust on its own, in my opinion. With the addition of a safety tether for the camera, it might still be used short takes, with re-attachment and checkup before rolling.

Falls off most surfaces
by Erin K. Darling (3 out of 5 stars)

Not as grippy as they'd like you to believe. Things it will not stick to: Texture-free, painted walls; dashboards; finished wooden doors; motorcycle helmets; ok, the list of what it WILL stick to is shorter. If not touched, wiggled, or looked at funny, it will stick to: Glass; metal; exceptionally smooth plastic. However, it doesn't take much to dislodge the thing, so it's not suitable for any external activities on motorcycles or cars - maybe surf/snowboards would work -- until it got hit by snow or water. It's a clever design, and I like the idea - it's just not at all what I'd hoped.

Easy to use and small footprint
by AMZN Customer (verified purchaser) (5 out of 5 stars)
July 5, 2019

The suction cup has a small footprint which is perfect for me. I had a different suction cup for my go pro when I'd stick to my window, but it felt so clunky and large. Not with this one! I like that I can place my go pro to the very edge of my window and not feel like it's in my way when I'm driving.

The gorilla pod arm is susceptible to moving especially in very bumpy roads. But I noticed when I did a bit of a curl and lean on the arm, it had less chance to move.

I'm pretty satisfied with this. Easy to remove too

and arm stays in whichever position I need it to be Feels like it will hold up for quite a while

Suction cup holds well, and arm stays in whichever position I need it to be

Feels like it will hold up for quite a while, but the downside to using it in a vehicle is that the vibrations from driving tend to make the footage hard to work with

This could be due to my cheap camera, and it may be fixable with video software - I just find that direct mounting to the suction cup works best, and all that takes is a male-to-male screw adapter I picked up for a few bucks https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018SMYL9M/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_5?tag=c-t-20

Suction Cup & GorillaPod Arm worked flawlessly, camera did not fall.
by S Bloch (5 out of 5 stars)
May 20, 2019

I recently bought a GoPRO to film some of my son's ice hockey games. I needed a way to mount the camera, so I got a multi-pack of attachments. (50 in 1). In the box was a suction attachment that in theory would work as the glass around the rink is smooth. The first time I used it the suction held for about 5 minutes, then lost suction and the camera fell to the ground. I tried wetting, pressing hard but no matter what, the suction did not last for more than 5 mins. I saw others using the JOBY and laughed at me as they had none of these issues. So I bought one as my son was having a 6 game tournament, and figured I could return it if it did not work. I filmed every game, 5-6 hours, without any problem. Worked like a champ!!!

Lasted a year
by Iftekar (4 out of 5 stars)
March 17, 2019

Lasted exactly a year.

I have used it extensively during all my road trips in different conditions -snow, rain , fog and what not. The joints started getting lose after say 5-6 months and the footage were shaky as a result but manageable. But last month the joints became so lose that I cant risk my gopro now. So there you have it, if you use it like me- its 1 year which is not too bad for the price. But expected to last little more.

by Crystal (3 out of 5 stars)
September 15, 2017

I purchased this for AutoX and was really really excited about how easy it was to use compared to the GoPro connectors. However, within a few weeks (probably 12-16 various runs), this no longer stays tight and instead pretty much just flops around making it impossible to actually record footage. I was very impressed to begin with, but sadly, it doesn't work for me anymore.

Wouldn't trust it. It fell off the side of my car
by Bullkills (1 out of 5 stars)
July 14, 2016

I attached it to the side of my car like some of the pictures that are on the description and guess what happens after a few miles it came off and chipped the side of my GoPro camera. Destroyed my camera case and now I can't scroll up or doen on my gopro I have to hook it up to my computer. Will be adding the video soon. So that you can see that it's attached to the side of my car then after five minutes it falls off. And I didn't notice until I was 10 minutes away. Then circled back came threw all the streets I had driven by until I found it broken on the floor. If I wouldn't have notice sooner someone could have grabbed it and taken it. So as for my experience it's not worth it. I did as the instruction said to do and was only going about 15 miles a hour. Now I need to repair my camera and buy a new housing for it. Thanks a lot to this product.

Held pretty well at 60 mph on top of my truck
by Daniel (5 out of 5 stars)
October 5, 2019

This is the best suction cup or at least one of the best I used it to put it on the outside of my truck and held pretty good at my top speed of 60 mph but of course had it secure with a tether just in case. Just had to use different arm because the arm SHAKES QUITE A BIT in the car but great for anywhere else.
