Product Description

The rats (rapid application Tourniquet system) was designed based on feedback from the battlefield where soldiers required a Tourniquet that could be easily applied and offered a low profile carry. The Tourniquet is already in use around the world by varying sof elements and has been proven on the battlefield. The rats can fit just about anywhere on your kit and can be quickly applied to an extremity using one hand.

Wish it worked for me.

So it works but... I have multiple TQs I wanted to try this one and see what it had going for it.

First its more affordable then the rest (2 of these for one of those).

Next, small limb capable. Works on smaller more slender limbs. (others might not)

Finally, learn how to use another type of TQ. (round out knowledge)

Product worked as advertised on my arms. Not so much on my thighs. I have large muscular thighs (Life time hockey player, long time backpacker) there is just enough material to wrap enough and then cinch down to effectively stop blood flow every time. With the tail of the cord in my hand I just couldn't get the thing to consistently cinch down without the cord slipping and sliding or being ripped out of my hands. I can do it on my arms one handed first time every time just not my thigh. Just the windless options are more first time every time for me. Still like it just don't love it. Fills a niche roll though. The pics First Loose pulse ox showing numbers Second pic tightened (Notice the lack of tail that is routinely ripped through my hands while trying to tighten)

Professionals will see through the hype of this popular tourniquet.

I teach tactical medicine classes and purchased the RATS for comparison with other commonly-found-in-the-field tourniquets. It is a quality product and functions well when used as designed. I was initially fooled by the promotional videos on the manufacturer's website. When using this tourniquet, in comparison to the CAT, it definitely falls short. It DOES NOT apply as quickly and easily as the CAT. It is awkward to apply (due to requiring a triple wrap around the extremity) and requires assistance from the victim by lifting up or holding out their extremity for ease of application. It is near impossible to apply this tourniquet to yourself if your injured extremity is limp / non-functional. It's the little things that make the difference when you're bleeding out! Don't believe me? Watch the manufacturer's videos and try these techniques yourself! Dozens of my professional Fire / EMS / Police students have tried the RATS in tactical medicine workshops and agree with me. Of course, the best tourniquet is the one you will actually carry and know how to use proficiently.

Don't sleep on this! Buy a few and train hard!

So far from my limited use of this tourniquet, it exceeds the cat, super simple concept, rapid deployment in a non stress environment, and I carry in my backpack as part of my EDC! I liked it so much I bought three more for everyone in my family and plan on getting a few more for coworkers! A simple rubber band holds it tight without having it lashed to itself, but I would like an elastic belt strap for carry! If you're gonna buy one, buy three and outfit your loved ones. Everyone plans on putting holes in things, until lately no one was concerned with getting holes in them! Great for "normal" situations, great for emt or any sort of situation where you may be a first responder before emergency services will arrive! Stocking stuffers for Christmas? Why not! Give the gift of life! Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it!

This is not an authentic RATS Turniquet
by Israel Perez-Siam (1 out of 5 stars)

This is not made in USA as stated in the product FAQ. The product does not match the photo and has no RATS logo or markings on it. The packaging is all in Chinese. It looks to be a very cheaply made knock off. The red part is not sewn on properly and the end of the black elastic is frayed.

A must carry for prepared individuals

Any first aid kit without a tourniquet is for all intensive purposes useless. You feel bad for the folks that buy them and hope something will help them when they experience a real-life trauma. One important design feature of this tourniquet is that it can be applied to yourself using only one arm. If one of your arms has the trauma (as is often the case). You can use your good arm to save your life. Practice using this, there are several good youtube videos that you can watch. It is essential that you keep your tourniquet on the exterior of your kit so that you can quickly deploy it.

Good addition to the IFAK

A lot of other reviews covered what you need to know about this. I have this in addition to the CAT and have practiced using offhanded with both. The CAT would be my preferred in a non-stressful situation but for speed and quick application RATS is a great alternative for a rapid deployment. Not really sure how difficult it would be to put the proper tension on the cord to wrap a limb when your hands are wet or bloody. Doesn't require much space and cost is low so it was an easy decision to buy.

Great Idea and we have incorporated it into some instruction ...

Great Idea and we have incorporated it into some instruction on how to use them, however there is some skepticism within the SOF community about how the thin elastic bands will quickly cause tissue to die beneath them. While I realize some dead tissue is better than flatlining from blood loss, if you are able to stop blood loss via a CAT or SOF-T without causing additional tissue damage, I would use that first. I think more studying needs to be done.

Luckily haven't has the need to use it but as far as the make and durability it's great.

Luckily I haven't had the need to use it but as far as the make and durability it's great. It's very simple to use on yourself or someone else. For the price there's no reason not to have one in your IFAK, it barely takes up any space as you can see in the photo - That's the Maxpedition FR-1 -

Just make sure you know what you're doing and how & when to use a tourniquet. It's not like the movies.

Just not long enough.

After watching a ton of reviews on YouTube, I decided to order this to try as an EDC tourniquet. I will say it was extremely easy to use. The only real disappointment was it is not long enough to get a good wide wrap around an adult leg ( high crotch area.) It will work for real small adults or children but it's not lone enough to get two raps on a average size leg. I will still carry it along with a another tourniquet ( CAT ) it is a good upper extremity tourniquet it would be nice to see a longer version of the RAT.
