The motor on my first one died just like others have reportedby Al Beebe (5 out of 5 stars)

The motor on my first one died just like others have reported, however i found a fix thats worked for almost a year and a half now. I purchased one of those vacation electric outlet timers that you plug lights into for $5. Instead, i plugged the litter box into it, and set it to turn on twice a day for 1 hour each time. Why haven't they built this into the litter box! It extends the life of the motor since its only on 2 hours a day vs 24 hours a day. It's not wasting electricity endlessly spinning, and its not endlessly making noise (although this thing is pretty quiet) I've tried a few other self cleaning litter boxes, and with my timer fix, this one is by far the best one. Highly recommend only if you use a timer.

Godsend...manna from heaven! FORGET the pain the furry, fuzzy, feline butt of scooping poo every day. This machine flat out works! We bought two for three cats in the house. We went on vacation for 10 days and bought these to cover as mother in law hates to scoop out the refuse...so she just checked on it every other day she was able. after 10 days and 3 full grown male cats it was almost to the top of the resevoir. only 1 malfunction but easlily fixed the little scoopy thing came loose and it wasnt as effective of cleaning out and litter jammed up on the conveyor system...simple fix of clamping down the part into its slots. have used since July of 2016 and could not be happier...best cat litterbox investment EVER!!!! I would estimate maintenance with our three cats...(e.g. clean it out and get rid of leftover dust and small things the auto scoop misses over time) about every three months a pan washout is due. The only thing that would make this better is if resevoir was sealed to keep odor in better...not a big deal but would have been a nice touch...odor kept in check by arm n hammer additive and a vanilla glade plug in by box. best litter (have tried 5 different kinds) is arm and hammer clump and seal black label...we use multi cat (3 males) UPDATE Dec. 2017 A few things learned since first purchasing 1. buy a timer as below like another reviewer suggested they do not need to run 24/7 they will wear out in about a year...I was able to order a replacement motor for mine but it was a pain! it worked for a few months but never the same...probably should have called company direct but I'm a do-it-myself nerd...would not recommend unless you have the patience of scratch building hobby models. I do.. and it still was not fun. SO buy a timer like the one listed below and I set it to clean 4 times per day for an hour...(3 male cats and 2 of these units works fine for keeping it clean) the machines will last SCADS longer if you invest in a timer. 2. Buy quality litter you WILL be sorry in the long run for cheap litter 3. you must clean the pan from the CEMENT LITTER dust that accumulates over time in the bottom or buildup will DESTROY this machine as I mentioned before dis-assemble pan and just hose out cement litter dust and then re assemble...GOOD TO GO kitty! 4. dis assemble pan and things from time to time (every 2 months) depending on how many cats use it...I have 3 and vacuum out nooks and crannies...clean poo ladder mechanism and pan (see # 3 above) Centu

New ... After almost three years, I decided to try the new version, it sounded like they had made some improvements. The new one sucks, it growls really loud right out of the box, and for some reason it breaks the stinky stuff up into small pieces that won't go up the ramp, it just falls through and circulates around in the tray. I called PetSafe and they didn't sound at all surprised, and simply said to return it. Stick with the original one, it works. I had been looking at this thing for a while, so when they dropped it to $72 I decided it was time to try it. It works, it works pretty well, but there are a few issues. It does make a little noise, not bad enough to bother the cat, but I am going to get a timer (see addendum for a better idea), as others have suggested, it will help with the noise and prolong the life of the motor. Another problem is the smell, my cat has always been very good about covering his stinky stuff, so I never smell it, but when the stinky stuff works its way around to the screens on this fancy device, it deliberately uncovers it, and keeps it in the open air for quite a while as it works it's way up the ramp into the holding bin. Even after it's in the holding bin, it's not in an air tight container, so you smell it. One more issue, even though it moves very very slowly, the cat sees it move, and he sometimes sits there looking at it for a long time, and eventually decides to attack it, playfully of course, but it makes a mess. Unfortunately, the most interesting part for him seems to be right where the "stuff" meets the screen, and that's where he attacks, so you can imagine what the mess consists of (he's finally starting to get over this behavior). Addendum: The timer helps reduce the unnecessary hours on the motor, but my cat doesn't poop on a schedule, so it's not really the best solution. Here's a better idea , if you're able to place a motion sensor where it will see the cat, and not everything else that moves in the room. This motion detector will run for 20 minutes every time the cat uses the litter. This reduces the motor running time from 24/7 to only 20 minutes every time the cat uses it, about four times a day. If you put a mark in the sand, just in front of the tunnel where the clean stuff emerges, that mark will be just in front of the screen after 20 minutes, so the cat has clean litter the next time he comes in, but some of the stuff will likely still be left on the ramp headed toward the bin. This doesn't

This doesn't bother me much, because the ramp is under the same plastic cover as the bin, so it's all the same. I would like to find an off the shelf motion sensor that will run for around 40 minutes, this would allow enough time to get everything up the ramp and into the bin, so if anyone has a suggestion please let me know. In the mean time, I'm a retired electronics engineer, and I plan to order a second sensor so I can crack it open and see if I can extend the time, if this works I'll post the technique here. Alternatively, you can just kick your foot in front of the sensor every once in a while, and give it an additional 20 minutes.
Addendum 2: The 2nd photo shows my latest arrangement, you can clearly see the motion sensor on the wall to the left. This works well, as it's in the far back corner of my laundry room under a counter top, so the cat is the only one who ever triggers the sensor. I'm still working on making the sensor run a little longer, but this works ok as is.
Addendum 3: By the way, if anyone's curious how much this thing adds to your electric bill each month, let's just say it's next to nothing, but here's the breakdown ... it draws about 6 watts out of the wall, at 9 VA, that's a poor power factor which you would expect from a small motor pushing a significant load, but the overall amount is so small no one cares. 6 watts is .006 Kw, so .006 x 24 x 365 / 12 is 4.38KwH per month. I pay 7.09 cents per KwH here, you'll have to use your own amount there, but 4.38 x .0709 = 31 cents per month ... I can afford that. Just for fun, I currently have mine plugged into a small KwH meter to see how much less it will be with the motion sensor. I'll have to let it run for a couple of weeks to get a decent average, because the cat doesn't keep to a schedule, but I suspect it will be a small fraction of the 31 cents.
