We do not recommend SanDisk or Samsung cards because after a short period of time they often become incompatible and cause disruption in the operation of the dashcam.

I will update this review after I use the dash cam for awhile longer, but these are my initial impressions....I want to give it 3.5 stars but that isn't possible. The unit is better than a 3 but doesn't deserve a 4.

First off, where's the lens cap? With a protruding lens like this there could easily have been a friction fit cap designed for this, I will have to be careful when transporting it or maybe use a soda cap. Another reviewer mentioned the SD card slot, now I know what they were referring to. The opening for the SD card is larger than the actual slot for the card, and the actual slot is recessed about 5MM into the housing and there is a gap in the opening and I could see how someone could jam the card in between the housing and the actual slot.

Here's my updated review, you really need to read this before you purchase.

I have had 4 of these within my possession in the last 3 months. The first one didn't restart and was replaced, upon replacement, Papago updated the firmware to not only turn off the chime, but to allow a 64GB card to be used in which I successfully had used for the duration....huge bonus.

Now, if you order one along with a 64GB card, you WILL NOT be able to use the 64GB card because you need to update the firmware using a 8-32GB card, the camera will not recognize the 64 GB card UNTIL AFTER the firmware update, in which case you need to update the firmware first with the before mentioned 8-32GB card. Maybe the newer versions already have the firmware updated but none of mine did.

Pic quality is amazing, night video is amazing, sound is greatly improved however, the last 3 cameras I purchased all had the same issue....the rattle inside the unit and it appears to be either the microphone, or something tapping the microphone. When playing back the audio, there is a random distorting sound and this happened on all 3 subsequent cameras. I thought the camera was tapping the windshield, but if you lightly shake it back and forth, you can clearly hear something loose inside. When my 3rd replacement arrived, I opened the box and gave it a light shake and it rattled...I didn't bother powering it up.

I'm in limbo right now, may or may not go with another replacement, but the video quality has me locked in so hopefully Papago will make it right. I'm not violently shaking these cameras, just a light shake and I'm handling them carefully...this is clearly a design issue. or a packaging issue. Could be the newer batch with the upgraded microphone sensitivity...who knows but that's purely speculation.

For inserting the card...if you don't have fingernails forget it. You need to get the tip of your nail on the card and hope it doesn't slip off or the card will pop out.....mine did.

What about the microphone? (This is updated at end of thread)

The greeting chime everyone is referring to...is ridiculous. It's crazy loud and consists of about 5 or 6 harmonic tones followed by what sounds like a vintage noise maker. With all the settings WHY ON EARTH IS THERE NO SETTING TO TURN OFF THIS OBNOXIOUS CHIME!?!? I did turn it down but I lose the volume on the other options but it's starting to grow on me...it's a con but the pros are outweighing it.

The unit seems well built, the low light performance is very good, overall I'm after the added clarity of the 2K resolution. I'll be honest, right now I'm on the fence of returning it for the KD Links X1, mainly because of the paltry microphone performance, the chime that I cannot turn off, and 3rd, the SD card design....in that order.

What upsets me is the price of this dash cam, and the poorly thought out items. Again, I will give it more time and report back. I really want to love this, and the only thing going for it right now is the high resolution and build quality.

I'm a realist, ....if it's reliable, pic quality is beyond expectations, then I maybe can live with the chime until I can hack it and turn it off, or just mute it and lose the other warnings. The end result is I need great night time quality and reliability.....I was hoping for more to be honest....maybe an upgraded version is in the works.

My first update.....not sure what the deal was with my recording or PC but I did another test and I can hear my voice at normal volume just fine, the radio isn't bad, I can make out the song and lyrics so for just a pinhole opening for a mic, it really isn't that bad.

I wish the micro SD card was easier to get in and out, but so far so good. One review on another site stated a gap in between the video clips when the next 5 min begins and there was no gap at all, perfectly seamless.

I will update again.

I paid full price. Camera is unreliable. Corrupted files galore. Mount sucks.

TL:DR: the camera is great but is extremely unreliable and so it fails as a dashcam.

WHY 1 STAR?: Reliability. Right before I came back to type this review, I saw something really neato only to find that it was not recorded at all! I have multiple other corrupted files on my memory card. The camera does not power off gracefully because it has a bad battery. When the car turns off the camera immediately loses power. NOT GOOD! If I would have needed this for an accident I would have been really upset that I spent 140 USD on nothing.

Camera: Great quality. Resolution is awesome. Microphone is alright. It does not have the while that the A118 does but it is not the best. I didnt need the mic at all but I could see why some would want it.

Hardware: The suction cup mount sucks. It falls of all the time. The camera attaches to the mount in such a way that If you slide the camera a bit to one side, the camera falls off the mount. This has resulted in many occasions that I bump it and it falls off. It needs a sticky mount.

The buttons tend to stop clicking and sink in after a while.

The lens: has a huge silver painted circle on it. Its not discrete at all. I've been worried about a break in for it but no break in yet.

I havent had the thing for a year and I am going to "upgrade" to the A119. The A119 is cheaper but much more reliable and much more discrete.

Wonderful dashcam from a great company

I travel a lot and I am always renting cars. I needed to some sort of insurance because you never know if someone will try to blame you for traffic incidents that's not your fault. It could be as simple as an insurance scam. I've encounter "witnesses" that claimed I ran a light, etc. I found this to be the perfect dashcam for this. It's quite slim (so easy to pack), the quality of the video is excellent especially at night, the mount is very secure (it mounts on a variety of glossy surfaces), and the power cord is long (so you can use it in any vehicle). These qualities I was very happy with; the best part I think is the constant firmware updates for this product. Too many companies release a product and then we have to deal with the bugs forever, but not here; in a recent firmware update they gave us 64GB card support and the ability to turn off the startup and shutdown chime. Thank you for that. It doesn't have a ton of extra features like GPS or WiFi, but for the price it's as good as it gets. I won't get into too many details on video quality and stuff as you can see many good screenshots already posted by other folks. The only feature I do want (and I think can be done by firmware upgrade) is the ability to add custom text like my license plate number or something. I am so happy with this, that I decided to get another one to be mounted permanently in my home vehicle, and I would recommend this to anyone.

Good for almost 1 year
by Mekox (2 out of 5 stars)

This dashcam was good at first. It's been almost 1 year since I had it and here are my problems with this unit. The first is that when I press the emergency record button it doesn't save my last few mins it starts to record from the moment I press on it and saves from that point on as my emergency. The suction cup sucks. In the hot sun of Florida it actually melted the plastic and left some really nasty goo on my window. The attachment from where you attach the unit itself is weak and on bumpy roads I had it fall off. Last but not least it seems to have trouble staying on. When driving I noticed it'll just shut off. I'm not sure exactly why but I just have to turn it on and it'll be fine until it shuts off again. I didn't have that problem until recently so maybe 1 year seems to be it's life span. Still good quality though.

Your choice

So I got the Papago Gosafe520, I did not want something that was going to break or be short term. I came across Papago after watching videos on youtube and only got it after I did research on it and other dash cams.

So cons:
-It chimes on turn on and can not be turned off
-32gb is the max which gets you about 4 hours but I have driven 6 hours straight already and 64gb would have been nice
-no gps chip
-30 sec event save, I feel like there should be an option to make this longer or even save the entire 5 min clip straight to event folder.
-30 sec save no guarantee, if it is starting its new 5 min section and is only 2 sec in, then you only get that 2 sec in the event save.

Now Pros:
-Wide angle lens is amazing
-get detail
-pretty good in low light
-adjustable exposure
-can be motion activated
-simple setup, good for beginners in dash cams
-long power cord so you can put it where you want
-basic plug and go
-internal battery
-motion sensor
-delay turn off

Neither Pro or Con
-The safety chimes, they are nice to have but I don't use them

If you want a good quality dash cam and are willing to spend the money, then I would have to say Papago. It is worth the money and the pros out weight the cons also no suction cup issues(saw that in a review with another cam). After a couple days of use and a few long drives, I would have to say I am happy with my purchase.

I like the unit as it is very simply and easy ...

This is my 2nd unit as the 1st one's buttons stopped functioning.

Overall, I like the unit as it is very simply and easy to set up. It is not made of high quality materials but neither do I need it to be.

I liked the shaped of the unit but have found that I do not need a screen at all and would now prefer the smaller Papago unit with the slide down screen.

It continues to stop working saying "slow card error" so it has not be reliable. This may be related to the card but I cannot test the card in anything else so I'm not sure. I bought an Adata 32GB, which was suggested by the manufacturer.

Bottom line, I would have chosen a different dashcam.

Worked great at first

Worked great at first. Then it started having issues with the micro SD card. Ok, known issue. Went online and went with what they recommended. Now every other day I have to reformat the card and constantly get "low card speed" warning. I've read the card requirements multiple times and it's even a brand recommended from their own website. It's a great product- till you run into an issue.

Great dash cam!
by Domenico (5 out of 5 stars)
April 21, 2016

This compact dash cam is working extremely well. I have tried two different resolutions (highest and lowest); both are great! Obviously the higher resolution uses a lot more of the SD card so I erase the footage at the end of each day (if I don't save it). Recently I have using the lowest resolution.

Works very well at night, as well. Easy to install in my 2013 F150; the power cord was relatively easy to hide (from the top of the rear view mirror across to the passenger side door and down to the glove compartment back to the power. I used a couple of zip ties to fasten the cord to the underside of the glove compartment to keep it clean. Anyway, I think it's a great dash cam.....

easy installation, clear instructions
by JJ (5 out of 5 stars)
January 13, 2016

I've pulled the video on mine several times to review incidents that occurred in my presence or to me.

Pros: easy installation, clear instructions, excellent wide-angle high-definition video

Cons: rubber suction cup mount would fall off (fixed that with a thin layer of silicon seal when I reinstalled the mount), micro-SD card can be difficult to remove and install so care is needed to not drop it

I have one of these cameras mounted in each of my cars and I would buy it again.

Impressed

This dash cam is awesome. Very user friendly, took less than 5 minutes to hookup and run the wiring across headboard, down the pillar and into the glove box area. I have it powered on a fuse so it's on ALL the time even when the car is off. I have the motion detection ON and it's very cool. Audio records a little quiet, but all you need to do it view the video on your computer and turn the speakers way up. I was easily able to understand a conversation I had with my wife while driving. The extra driving aids are very nice actually, alerting you when to go at a red light if the car in front started to go while and if you were distracted. I'm actually considering adding one to the back of my car and facing backwards
