Look at my Awesome Drink!
by Sir Charles Panther (5 out of 5 stars)

Disclosure: I was contacted by the maker and offered these for review. I accepted, promising a fair and honest review in return.

I'll admit it: I thought I was getting skull cube molds; it took me a couple of minutes to realize that these are not a mold, but self-contained units that you freeze and then drop into your beverage. They are filled with some kind of liquid-water? Ethylene glycol? Unicorn blood?-which is not described anywhere.

The main advantage of a self-contained, non-water ice cube is that it doesn't melt and dilute your precious drink of choice. For a glass of water that's a complete and total wash. For a glass of soda or tea it's about the same, as the cold afforded by ice will more or less match your measured consumption of the drink, so the ice goes as you drink and you end up with an empty glass. For the discerning drinker, and I'm not one, who doesn't want even the hint of dilution in his/her drink, but still wants it cold, this is a good solution. It would also work with un-cold beer or wine, as you can chill it down quickly without any dilution. But, this self-contained cube leaves you with something you have to deal with afterwards, as in clean and then store/re-freeze.

These cubes are for show, for you to pop into someone's drink, or your own, and have them go, "Damn! Where'd you get those things!?" As such, these cubes are wasted in a glass of water, or in a tall glass of dark soda. Unlike regular ice, which floats, these sink and stay at the bottom, so they're best used in a shallow glass or tumbler, and in a liquid in which they can be seen (as shown in the product images). This is the only way you're going to get the full utility of this product.

They come with a "storage pouch," which to me doesn't make a lot of sense. I'd think that these things would live permanently in the freezer, so they're always ready to go, for you to show off. The pouch implies that these should be mobile...I envision some Ultra-Cool Guy who freezes these, then slips them into the awesome black pouch to place them lovingly in the breast pocket of his tan jacket and then on to his social activity, where with great flourish he exposes his pouch and drops these into his Makers Mark for the open-mouthed wonderment of all present.

Performance: so, do they keep your drink cool? Well, yeah, with some caveats. Since there are only two, the best way to use them is in a glass where you are filling only as high as these cubes. Since they sink, only what is on the bottom is getting their cooling effect, so if you fill a tall glass well above them, there's no chilling going on at the top. At the bottom they seem to work pretty well. They freeze again in about four hours.

Taste: the product and packaging copy says that these will not impart any kind of taste to your drink, and my experience shows this to be true.

Price: At about $15 for the pair, that's about $7.50 for each cube. For the material, food-grade stainless steel, and for what I assume to be a modest production/assembly process, this price seems about right. If you're just buying a pair for yourself to slip into your pouch and take to that cool party, then you're good to go. But if you're planning on hosting a party and busting these out, you're going to have more than one person who's going to want an awesome, skulled-up drink, so you're going to have to buy more than one box. Just a dozen of these things will then run you close to $90-ouch.

These are super-easy to clean. There are no indications on the package, so I put them in the dishwasher and they seem to have come out just fine. There are no deep indentations or recesses that would make them difficult to clean.

I note that the product copy, while comprehensible, is typical foreign-made Bad English. The product will be better received when it is tight in all respects-contact me, Skull Head, and I'll tighten up your copy.

Bottom line: this is a pretty good product, creative, interesting, different and fun, and it delivers on what it promises.

Beats being as boring as a rock!

These skulls are a lot of fun and work quite well! They have a nice heft to them, which means they excel at acting as a thermal mass to keep your drinks cool. They're also much bigger than I was expecting -- about the size of a ping pong ball.

If you're looking for a way to cool your drinks that's much more different and fun than the standard 'whiskey stone', or just looking for a great gift item for someone that has everything, these are great!

Full disclosure: They wanted me to try these so badly that they sent me a set for free.

My guests and I really enjoy these chillers! They are so easy to use compared to skull-shaped ice molds, plus these look better.

They also come with a classy carrying pouch. Would make a great gift! :)

What a fun way to keep your beverage cold without watering it down. The product is exactly as it is described and was delivered as promised. It is always a conversation starter at a party or get together at my house. It froze pretty quickly and lasted for a long time. I would definitely recommend this product for anyone looking for a "cool" way to serve your drinks.
