Leaves metal slivers when used per mfr instructionsby Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)
December 7, 2018
I saw others' reviews that this opener leaves metal slivers along the can rim after opening. I figured maybe some were using it wrong or some received a defective unit, so I ordered it to see for myself. Sure enough, first and every can I've opened with it so far has had metal slivers along the outside rim of the can after opening. I followed the mfr instructions and did not go beyond a single rotation of the can, yet metal slivers still occurred, every time. Fortunately, the metal slivers stick out on the outside of the can rim, and not the inside, but there's a chance that if one isn't very careful, a sliver could end up inside the can or in the food as the food is removed from the can.
If not for this one critical flaw, the can opener otherwise works great. Easy to lock a can in place. Easy to press down on lever and hold while it rotates and opens. Easy to release the lock and remove the can. Easy to lift the opened lid. Wish the cord was a few inches longer. It barely reaches the outlet above the counter. Regardless, the metal slivers created by this opener make it a non-starter for our family. I will be returning it. I've already ordered a replacement - a Kuhn Rikon 2262 Auto Safety Opener manual can opener. It's a similar "safety" design to this one that doesn't leave a sharp edge on the lid, but this one doesn't leave any metal slivers, at least no yet. So far so good with that one. I'll try to remember to update this review if that ever changes.
Cord length is ~26 inches

The cord is ~26in long, and can be stored inside the unit itself. Reviewers who said it has a short cord probably did not pull it all the way out. I thought the same based on the reviews I read when I received the opener. But upon reading the manual, it shows a picture of storing the cord on page 5. Then I realized that the cord was not pulled out all the way. Fairly easy to use, and makes a clean cut.
GREAT AT FIRST, BUT PERFORMANCE WANED TO USELESS.

At first, this worked very well. Before it was in use for six months, fine threads and flecks of metal started to appear, both on the opener and the can. Some would fall into the food. I carefully cleaned the debris that clung to the opener, but that did not prevent flecks from inside the can. Eight months after purchase, it would no longer reliably open half the cans cleanly. If anyone has had this replaced this under warranty, I'd appreciate hearing about that experience.
WOW!! STOP RIGHT HERE -- THIS IS THE ONE YOU WANT!! 10 STARS PLUS CAN OPENER!

I always love buying High Quality products, and from reading reviews on Amazon I can usually find the best products from Reviewers descriptions. This Hamilton Beach Can Opener had caught my eye from all the great 5 Star reviews it showed, and from Reviews as far back as year 2009 which shows Hamilton Beach knows they have a high quality well built very popular can opener.
Having received this can opener in September 2016, I could immediately tell it was solid, quality built and designed for long time use. It works great, simply, and VERY QUIET in operation. Top quality in every aspect, including the push-in-out retractable cord, which is a real plus for kitchen counter use.
I got tired of pulling the tab opening can lids and feared for a cut from the sharp edge, and also the old style can opener leaving messy and sharp edges which were not safe laying around due to sharp metal edges. This new can opener solves all those problems perfectly.
I just renovated my kitchen and used dark cabinets, and stainless steel appliances. This Black & Chrome finish can opener blended in real well.
The can opener is what you would design in your mind as having every feature a High Quality Can Opener would have, well designed and solidly built. That's what we need more of in the world. Great job Hamilton Beach. Five Stars in every respect.

Safety concerns with metal shavings!
by Kimberly (1 out of 5 stars)

I purchased this product 2 years ago. At first it was awesome but what I started noticing overtime were metal shavings on my counter after opening cans. Upon further investigation, I noticed lots of metal shavings and discontinued using it for safety reasons. I wouldn't want anyone in my family including the dogs to ingest metal shavings. Definitely would not buy this product for safety reasons.
4 stars -- a compromise between a 5 star product and 2 star instructions.

This is billed as an "opener for seniors." Well, my wife and I are as old as the younger hills and we both had the same problem with the instructions. The instruction booklet doesn't say anything about it, but this thing ships with a clear piece of plastic wrapped around the cutter blade, in front. The clear plastic has a short message in black print telling you to remove it before using the cutter. The black print is in front of two black areas on the metal housing. It's very easy not to notice the plastic piece (we didn't) before trying to use the cutter. After three failed attempts at cutting we were about ready to ship the thing back, when my wife lifted it up for a closer look. Only then did we see the piece of plastic, and even then we had to pull it off (not very easy) before we could read the message. The thing cuts beautifully, but there's no excuse for leaving an essential step out of the instructions. It would have 5 stars without that; I thought about giving it 3, but settled on 4. IMO, this thing is not really aimed at old people.
Cutter can jam.

Originally, I really liked the can opener. No Sharp edges and it opened every can without any problems.
Two months later, it will not open ANY cans. Absolutely none, even after (what I thought was) a thorough cleaning.
I will soon contact Hamilton Beach for repair or replacement under product warranty. We will see what happens.
Update: I carefully read the warranty and found that I am responsible for shipping BOTH ways for repair or replacement. The shipping would undoubtedly be more that the cost of the can opener. Truly not worth it. I suspect that is why Hamilton Beach wants us to pay for the shipping - so that they don't have to replace or repair a defective product.
Buy another Hamilton Beach product? I don't think so. And I don't think that anybody should. I have since rethought this statement.
UPDATE: I realized that I have overreacted and have changed my review from 1 star to 4 stars. A thin piece of metal from opening a can jammed the cutter wheel and kept the cutter from turning. The can opener then stopped working. I removed the four screws at the back of the opener and removed the front. Then I removed the screw holding the circular cutter. This allowed some wiggle room for the cutter, but I was unable to remove the cutter. I cleaned out around the cutter (top and bottom), lubricated around the cutter (top and bottom), and then reassembled. It works now. You would think that Hamilton Beach would post something about this problem.
The reason for 4 stars, rather than 5, is their return policy.
Hit-or-miss electric can opener works great -- except for those times when it doesn't

I'd been using the same small dependable hand-held electric can opener for the past 25+ years until it finally gave up the ghost. And found out that they don't make it anymore. I looked at Amazon and various brick-and-mortar stores for a similar replacement -- with no luck. The handhelds all seemed to be the battery ones (which I tried and didn't like) and the alternatives were the larger countertop models. I hesitated with buying one of these because I prefer to keep my countertops clear of appliances and, while I do have a cabinetry "appliance garage" to keep them out of sight, I didn't want to have to deal with adding another sizable piece into an already crowded space. After getting hand cramps from my old manual opener, though, I finally opted for this Hamilton Beach model.
For the most part, it works great. It cuts the lid off neatly along the very top side (a higher side cut than battery can openers that I've used) and leaves a smooth, safer cut edge. I'd never much cared for the side-cut openers before because liquids inside the can seemed to spill more easily with the lower edge, so this higher-cutting model is much better IMO. The opener is super easy to use. The top push-down lever depresses easily and the magnet on the opener holds the can securely in place while it's cutting. With some cans, the lid easily lifts off when you remove the can from the opener's magnet -- other times, I have to apply some side pressure to break the vacuum seal before I can easily lift it off.
Unfortunately, though, I occasionally encounter a can that it simply doesn't cut. Not many, but it's frustrating when it happens. The can does its full rotation as if it worked but the lid is still intact afterwards. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with size or diameter of the can top but is sometimes affected by the paper label around the can so I've gotten some of the recalcitrant cans to cooperate by peeling off the label. But sometimes I can't find any way to make it work and I have to settle for the old manual opener. I would have rated this opener 5-stars except for the fact that, while it opens most cans, it doesn't open them all.
Bottom line: This can opener works great on opening *most* cans. If you don't mind encountering the occasional can that it won't open, you'll probably be happy with it.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The directions say to only allow one full rotation. I found that this is important because if you allow it to continue making rotations, it cuts long narrow slivers of the can which are noticeable when you remove the top (looks like a tiny strand of steel wool). I'd worry about some of those metal slivers possibly getting into the food without people's awareness. So I make note of where I begin cutting so that I know to release the lever when it reaches that spot again. I end up with a smooth cut then. (Also, the opener usually makes a bit of a different sound when it reaches the point it's already cut.)
