I recently ordered four of the highest-rated, low cost portable Bluetooth speakers for comparison. My intent was to buy the one I liked best for my personal use when travelling and to return the others. Following are my non-professional impressions.
The products I purchased from Amazon, and the prices I actually paid, were:
Sony SRSX11 $48
DKnight MagicBox II $35
Cambridge SoundWorks OontZ Angle 3 $30
Anker Classic $37
I played a variety of music on each of them, including Van Morrison, Miles Davis, U2 and Pink Floyd, constantly rotating between the speakers mid-song as I compared their sound.
1. The Anker was by far the least impressive. It sounded tinny and flat with little or no bass. Very disappointing and was an easy reject, the first to go back into its box.
2. The OontZ Angle sounded pretty good at first, and showed excellent midrange and treble notes. It also played at a nice loud volume. I liked it a lot but ultimately I noticed the bass response was lacking and it sounded a little thin compared to the remaining others, so it was next to go. Too bad, because I liked the styling of it, and the fact that, unlike the others, it had no annoying blue light to bother me in a dark room.
The last two standing were a tough choice, but ...
3. The MagicBox was really good and almost won out. It had a full sound and great style, but in the end I found it didn't have the best range from highs to lows that I heard in the Sony. Just not quite enough bass to make me happy. If it had been the only one I'd heard I would have been quite happy with it, and felt sad to send it back.
4. The Sony was totally surprising given its very small size. I thought it would be easy to rule out before I heard it, but it kept impressing me with its excellent bass response and midrange tones. I'd say it has a cleaner sound overall. Maybe in this case, a little higher cost is worth the price. I'm keeping this one, knowing it'll fill up a hotel room with great sound.
Hope this helps, and happy listening!

This thing is awesome! My husband uses it in his big diesel work van (as the radio doesn't work) to listen to podcasts. It has enough volume to be heard over the engine and the battery lasts all day. The sound quality is perfect, and he loves that it has a little hangy doodad so it doesn't fly all over his dashboard.
Best for the Bucks!

This is the second unit of this product that I have purchased. I have been using the first one for two months now and after I saw a couple of videos of these being used as pairs, I bought the second one without any second thoughts.
The sound quality is amazing and it can get very very loud without any distortion. Of course, this is not a Hi-Rez audiophile type speakers but still pretty good.
Pairing them up is pretty easy and after pairing once, they stay paired. They can be used in both stereo and mono mode. Especially the stereo mode is amazing for listening to musing or watching movies.
Charging from nought to full takes about 30-40 minutes and lasts around 7 hours of playback with normal hearing volumes.
The only downside is that there is no battery indicator. You only know that it's out of juice when it shuts down. Was it too hard to put nothing much but four leds to let me know if the battery is empty or not Sony? Was it?
Anyways, I can totally recommend these with complete peace of mind. Good job Sony!
Not for serious listening

I purchased this speaker based on the strength of the Amazon reviews. The sound is okay for casual situations but unfortunately not satisfactory at all for critical listening. I bought two of these intended for use as Left and Right channels, using a stereo to L/R mono splitter (I confirmed that the splitter worked by adjusting the Left/Right audio balance controls on my laptop). Mid and mid-low range was good, but the treble was very weak. Cymbals and hi-hats sounded muffled and soft. Stereo imaging was very poor, and I surmise this might be due to the passive woofers on the sides of the speakers. These passive woofers help augment the bass and in this role they work well, especially in a single-speaker usage situation (which is the most common usage situation). But when set up as a Left and Right channel pair, the passive woofers muddy the sound stage and produce a strongly low/mid-bass skewed sound in the 200Hz range which sounds "cheap". The vague stereo imaging combined with the unnatural bass-heavy and treble-light tonal balance render the speakers highly unpleasant to listen to, at least in my usage scenario. I would not recommend the Sony SRSX11 if you tend to listen closely to and value fidelity in your music - you will be very disappointed.
Great speaker. Compact and very honest sound

Great speaker. Compact and very honest sound. I actually had a Oontz 3XL and JBL Flip 4 as well as some other $100+ speakers. I sold or returned them all after hearing this little Sony since I was mad none of the nicer speakers had decent midrange. all of them had scooped mids that were bugging me. If you like your mids, you will like the SRS X11. No sub bass but still accurate & non exaggerated lows. I thought it was worth 4 stars though when i had just one until I realized after doing more listening that it's actually a very honest and accurate speaker, and if you don't mind that it only extends to about 15khz, (totally fine for me), it's a glorious sound for the price.
I recently got a second from Amazon warehouse so I could try using two SRS X11 in stereo mode, since i was liking my one so much. I absolutely have to recommend getting two of these and running them in stereo - the sound is even more cohesive and far more powerful when each speaker only takes one channel's job. Really these are a steal. I love mine.
Good sound and value in a small little package.

I've been very impressed by this little speaker. It produces good sound, seems to have great battery life and is very compact. We have packed this speaker across the country to provide us tunes while on vacation and use it often at home with our 3 young kids, who enjoy spontaneous dance parties in whichever room of the house we are in. We often take it to the neighborhood pool which it has held up nicely for, even without being waterproof. The only negative I've found is that if you really pump up the volume the sound does get distorted. But for such a small speaker it does a great job, especially at the price point this comes in at.
Extremely low volume when not FULLY charged

I'm really surprised no one mentioned in their review that this little speaker loses its ability to have high volume when it isn't fully charged. You can barely hear it from 10 feet away when it kicks into this mode! It's extremely frustrating considering without use, just sitting on the counter without playing anything it loses charge in about 12 hours. Then, you plug the unit in and it doesn't bring the volume back up until it fully charges again, We ordered a second unit thinking it was defective but had the same problem the second time around. I wouldn't recommend this product.
These speakers are great. Great sound

These speakers are great. Great sound, great volume capability, each unit has three speakers. Not only are they useful for music they work very well with my iPhone as a speaker, easy to carry around as you move about, set them down a talk away, then move and continue. Do get a pair, well worth the small additional cost. Only need one for speaker phone use in case you were wondering.
Durable, incredible sound for its size, and battery life doesn't degrade

I bought one of these more than 2 years ago. It has stood up to use and abuse all this time. The battery life hasn't degraded, it has room-filling sound in a remarkably small size, and it has even withstood being splashed with water from time to time. I sometimes put it in a ziplock freezer bag and take it rafting, ensuring there's enough air inside to float in case it takes a swim. It's small enough to throw in a backpack and not notice it's there. Cheaper off-brand speakers won't even last a few months. I strongly recommend this speaker.
A couple reviews mention muddy sound. I haven't experienced that. Make no mistake, this isn't intended as a product for professionals to use in sound editing, etc. That's ridiculous to expect professional-grade quality from this consumer product. This is intended for a casual user, and it excels at that. This is powerful enough to play loud music at a backyard bbq and annoy your neighors, or in your garage while working on projects with power tools.
I'm a Sony customer because of my experience with this speaker, and have made purchases of Sony products since I bought this simply because of how amazed I've been with this speaker.
The speaker sounds great for about 10 minutes

I had to change my review (see below) . I didn't realize that when the battery is low, the speaker will start off at full volume & then get real quiet after about 10 minutes. Because we read some other reviews on the web that said it did this with apple products- WRONG! I gave it a full charge & have been listening to it for 4 and a half hours straight at high volume and it sounds awesome!
The speaker sounds great for about 10 minutes, then the volume drops out. I tried it on my iphone and my Ipad and it happened on both. I had to turn the speaker off & remove the device from my phone & ipad, and then re pair it. We looked on the web for reviews &discussions & found that this is a problem for a lot of Apple device owners. Apparently it has to be repaired every 10 or 15 minutes, which makes a very inconvenient. I'm going to try to return it.
