Product Description

Seamlessly paint photoreal images, abstract designs, and animation into your long exposure photos and timelapse. Pixelstick consists of 200 full color RGB LEDs inside a lightweight aluminum housing. The mounted controller reads images you've downloaded or created from an SD card and displays them, one line at a time, on the LEDs. Images can be downloaded or created yourself. Pixelstick's incredible resolution and color range coupled with the ability to read custom images means your creative options are nearly limitless. The firmware allows for on-the-fly color correction as well as adjustments to speed, brightness, and orientation. Pixelstick can even automatically increment through a sequence of images over multiple exposures, opening up light painting to the world of time lapse, and allowing for animations of a scope and quality never before seen.

Features

  • 200 RGB LEDs with diffusion lens
  • Sturdy aluminum housing with matte black finish
  • Extension handle with Foam Grip and Spin sleeve
  • Battery holder, battery cable and cable clips included
  • Splits in half for easy storage and travel in included carry bag

Works well, poor support response
by Edmond H. Pepper, P.E. (3 out of 5 stars)

Device works as described, however, requests for support have gone unanswered. I did not receive a user manual, and can't seem to find one online.

The first 3 SD cards 64GB I tried did not work; apparently larger SD cards do not work with this device. It did work with an 8GB SD card.

Best thing since sliced bread! Though, careful! She's very fragile! All plastic.

Issues with the unit initially. Difficult to find a way to contact the company.

I bought this back in November. Only have used it twice, briefly, as the schedule has not allowed time for night photography. Pulled it out on a recent weeklong trip that I was hoping would be a good opportunity to try out several images I had in mind. Assembled the unit, went to try the rainbow demo to show the other folks on the trip. We got about 10 seconds of rainbow then nothing. I have checked all the accessible connections. Batteries check out as good. The controller starts up fine and says FIRING!, but no light show. Pretty expensive gadget to have it die after maybe five minutes (total) of use! I am trying to figure out how to ping the company as there is not much contact info on their website. I'll update this post as this develops.

UPDATE (late April): Emails to the company, posts to website, and posts to FaceBook have gone unanswered. Nice case. Interesting concept. But no quality control and no support from the company. Look for products from other vendors if you want to do light painting.

UPDATE (May 16,2018):

The good news is that after multiple posts across several sites (photo blogs, their new product Kickstarter site, Amazon, etc.) I was able to get a hold of the BitBanger folks. My original post to the PixelStick website had a bad email address (my fault!). They had tried responding to me back in April, but the message bounced. Not sure why the FB, Amazon, and other posts went unanswered though.

The problem was with the wiring connector between the controller and the LED lights. There is a plug that must be push together very aggressively to make proper contact. I had checked this before, but the trick was to connect the plugs, screw down the covering cap, then give the plug another solid push. I could hear it click into place. Once done, the light performed as expected.

I am looking forward to getting out to the desert soon to complete my image experiments with this cool looking tool!

Raised this from a 1* to 3* for now. I will update as I start using it more and adjust the rating accordingly to the unit's performance for imaging. The difficulty in contacting these guys to get a service response is a concern. It is a two person outfit by the looks of it, so somewhat expected. But a clearer path to getting a service request in should not be that difficult to setup on a website. The BitBanger (not the PixelStick) website seems to be the best bet.

It's a little complicated at first, but once you learn how to use it you will love it. Everyone wants to borrow it now. If you like being creative with your photography then this is an excellent choice

Excellent light bar... needs a hard case option for travel.

Excellent! Works exactly as advertised! If you like this type of photography, it is a must buy!! It would have been a 5/5 if there had been some sort of hard case option available for it. The padded bag just won't do the job when traveling other than by car. I am currently going through document tubes to find the right size and protection live needed to ship/airline check this.

Missing part.

I have not used the Pixelstick yet because of the weather however one thing I am wondering about is when I received my Pixelstick I did not receive the spin handle with it. Now I looked through the instructions and found on page 6 a list of components and it references the handle, (which came with my Pixelstick ) and spin handle. The spin handle seems to come as part of the package. But when I turn to page 8 the assembly picture does not show the spin handle. Now this confused me until I began reading page 32 under technique. It reads, "The Spinner technique relies on pixelstick's included spin handle" which I did not receive. I would formally request communication with you to resolve this issue. Other than this issue I am pleased with my Pixelstick. I am looking forward to using it on the next clear night.
Thank you!
