Product works, misleading warranty
by JayKay (5 out of 5 stars)
December 4, 2015

Update: while it was confusing getting two different warranties, Amazon once again has stepped up to the plate. I received in writing that indeed the warranty is good for one year so I am a happy clam and am glad to upgrade my rating to 5 stars for the product I received at the price I paid. The price does bounce around a lot so follow it for a while before buying. Boytone: take that 90 day warranty insert out of your product box....lets coordinate with Amazon, ok?

My previous review:

Let me first say this product is amazing for converting LPs and tapes to digital form. And that is the only reason I bought it. I have hundreds of tapes and LPs and will be only listening to the music while I am converting it. The instructions are clear and intuitive. You can record on USB then separate out tracks and label them on Audacity. I was a little skeptical when I say that nearly every recent review was 5 stars and written by someone who got this product at a discount. But once I got it and started converting I was sold on the ease of use. So why 3 stars? Read the Amazon description: "Product is backed with 1 Year direct Boytone USA warranty" OK, so it will last a year and break down. It appears fairly cheaply made so I can only count on it working as long as the warranty with the heavy use I am going to give it. That is fine for $59.99, I will have everything converted over to digital by then. When I opened the box and took out the player there was an insert in the box that read "90 day warranty". That is a big difference. I would hope Amazon would stick by their advertising or maybe give me a big discount (75% to reflect a 75% warranty reduction?) like many reviewers got even though they did not pick up on the mismatch. Neither Boytone nor Amazon have responded to my inquiries; hope to hear from them soon. I would write more but I only have 88 days left to convert those records and tapes so I better get hopping....

A belated review, but a favorable one......
by J. A. Wall (4 out of 5 stars)
June 1, 2017

I purchased this Boytone unit back in March of 2016, and it is still working fine. I would love to give this a five-star rating if not for issues with the radio, which I'll discuss momentarily.

I bought this primarily for the three-speed turntable and the ability to encode music from records to MP3 without having to hook it up to a computer. I have a collection of 2500-plus pre-World War II 78 rpm records which I've obtained over a period of thirty-five years, and have been looking for an easy way to convert the music to digital. This Boytone player/recorder does a wonderful job of that. After recording the music on an SDHC card, I connect the card to my laptop and convert the files to the WAV format for noise reduction and editing.

A common claim I've heard concerning these retro-type turntabe/radio units is that the tone arm and pick-up is too heavy to play LPs and 45s. Though I've not played a lot of those on my unit (they play with no issues), I've found the tone arm & pick-up to be too light to play 78s with the supplied LP/45 stylus, for the smaller stylus tends to wiggle a bit in the larger 78 groove, causing some distortion in the playback. When playing 78s I affix a weight (a quarter) on the headshell behind the needle, and the problem is solved. Never place the weight directly over the needle itself, lest you risk damaging the record, regardless of its make. I purchased two additional LP/45 styluses, in which one is used solely for LPs and 45s. It would not be a good idea to play LPs with a stylus that's played a lot of 78s.

The cassette player works fine. Of course, its only a player and not a recorder. Its only functions are play and fast-forward. And music from cassettes can also be converted to MP3 as well.

The one major complaint I have with this Boytone player is the radio. Reception of FM stations is good, but I was only able to receive one or two local AM stations. This radio does not give you the option of having presets for your favorite stations. Most annoying, as others have mentioned, is that when you shut the unit off and turn it on again, the radio does not remain on the station you had it on previously, but returns to the first frequency of 87.5 MHz (the same applies to the AM band). For this reason I cannot give this unit a full five stars.

But for records, this Boytone player works for me. And I hope it will continue to work for a few more years.

UPDATE 6 June 2017: I sought out an acquired a 78 rpm stylus for this turntable via Amazon, and my 78s sound better than they did using the LP/45 needle. Even my Edison Diamond Discs play with less noise and better fidelity, though they are of the vertical-cut type and do not reproduce 100% on a non-Edison phonograph.

Fun, capable and very useful little combo MP3-making machine
by Alpha 7 (5 out of 5 stars)
August 13, 2019

THIS MACHINE IS RECOMMENDED FOR:
-- People who would like to easily make mp3s out of old records, cassettes, radio broadcasts or external sources without using a computer
-- Grandma, who wants to play some old records, cassettes, or the radio without the sound seeming to be too loud
-- People who would be pleased with a very small player that plays records, cassettes and a radio which does not take up much space

SIZE: Surprisingly and pleasantly small and compact. The size of a decent-sized birthday cake.

WEIGHT: Very light, easy to move, has rubber pads on bottom

SOUND QUALITY: 2 speakers provide treble and mid-range audio from records with very little bass. For some reason cassettes seem to sound with more bass than records. If you want full-range sound, get a couple patch cords and plug run the sound from the LINE OUT jacks through a good amplifier and speakers and you're set.

TONE CONTROLS: Nope

BALANCE CONTROL: Nope

EQUALIZER OR OTHER SOUND ENHANCEMENTS: Nope

RCA LINE OUT JACKS: Yes. In the back.

AUX IN: Yes. You could run audio from a CD player, more full-featured cassette player, reel-to-reel tape recorder or anything else with a line out or headphone jack into this through the AUX input. And record it to MP3.

TURNTABLE: Light, belt-driven, felt cushion on top, includes 45rpm adapter which is just a hair loose on the spindle. This is not a big deal, you can use another sort if you like which will keep 45rpm records in place more firmly.

RECORD PLAYER SPEEDS: 33, 45, 78

NEEDLE LIFT LEVER: Yes

AUTOMATIC NEEDLE/TURNTABLE SHUTOFF WHEN NEEDLE REACHES THE END OF RECORD: Yes, though if you are playing a small-sized 78 or any record which is recorded close to the center label, the turntable will sometimes stop before playing the end of the record. If you turn the auto-stop function off with a switch near the needle, though, that will make it possible for all records to be played to the end no matter how close to the center the grooves get at the end of the side.

NEEDLE AUTO-RETURN AFTER A RECORD HAS BEEN PLAYED: No, it doesn't do that. You can either set the auto-stop to function, which works fine with 33rpm records, or leave it off so a record will play all the way through.

CASSETTE PLAY: Yes

CASSETTE FAST-FORWARD: Yes. Push the cassette eject button on the side halfway in and the cassette tape will fast-forward.

CASSETTE REWIND: Not available. But you can take a tape out and reverse it and fast forward side B to the end so side A will be at the beginning.

SOUND QUALITY OF MP3s MADE FROM RECORDS: Pretty great. No hiss. Nice fidelity.

SOUND QUALITY OF MP3s MADE FROM CASSETTES: Only as good as the quality of the cassette recording to begin with, but if the source sounds good, so will the MP3.

MP3 BITRATE: 128kbps, no other choices.

ABILITY TO RECORD TO A WAV FILE: No, it records 128kb MP3 files only.

HOW THE MP3 RECORDING PROCESS WORKS:
--You place your chosen record on the turntable, cassette in the slot without pushing it in all the way, or plug your CD player, reel-to-reel tape recorder or other device into the AUX input, and put an 8gb USB drive in the provided slot
--Select PHONO, AUX, TUNER or TAPE from the switch at left to choose your desired audio source
--Press the "record" button to initiate the recording process. The machine will not start recording right away, but in anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds a little USB icon will appear in the lit window on the front. The machine needs a few seconds to check for available space on the USB and index it. Once it has done that (which takes a shorter amount of time if there is less already on the USB), it will then start recording. So while it is "warming up," you have time to get the needle of the record player positioned over the outside edge and keep the needle lever in the up position until the USB icon in the blue lit window begins to flash. That means recording has begun.
--Press "stop" when the song or album side or whatever you are playing is finished. The USB will accept the new file. You do not have to "save" it or any such thing.

You can record a single song by pressing record, then waiting, then dropping the needle at the appropriate time, then pressing stop. You can also allow a full record or tape side to play and record, then save it, and chop it up into individual tracks later if you like by using MP3 cutter-type software. Or you can just record a whole album side at once and listen to that later as-is.

All that being said, this is a really fun little package which is very useful as a recording utility and connectable to a "real" stereo if you want something other than the adequate "budget" audio that comes from the speakers. Which is really not that bad and very nice for radio listening.

There are no cassette rewind or tone and balance controls but these things aren't really missed. You get the clear feeling from it that this is not meant to be a serious stereo component but a useful little budget combo machine mainly concerned with being able to make you nice MP3s out of your old records and tapes, which you could then later listen to on this system too if you wanted. It is very likeable and does everything it says it will do. And its default settings, such as the record level for MP3s, are just fine. And that is not a bad thing at all. You do not have to set much with this machine. For the amount of things it does t is remarkably idiot-proof and lets you do most everything you want in a single easy step.

This was a great purchase and I am very happy with the machine. I have a lot of old records and cassettes and reel tapes to to convert so I think I will get another one so I can run records in one room and cassette & reel tapes in another & get more work done faster!

Sounds Great!
by Swiss (4 out of 5 stars)
January 24, 2017

The unit works and sounds great. I don't have a huge collection of records but the records I have sound great on this unit. I haven't tested the tape deck as of yet so I can't comment on the functionality. There are only two things that bug me a bit and that is the auto stop feature and the pin adapter. Some records stop prematurely due to the auto stop switch needing to be adjusted. Just as others have pointed out, the switch is set to engage a bit too early but it should be a fairly simple adjustment. The adapter that it comes with for adapting records with a large pin hole is a bit too small making it hard to align the record properly. I would suggest that anyone purchasing this unit should also purchase a set of 45 record adapters which snap into the pin hole. They make it much easier to use than the adapter included with this unit. Only time will tell if it will hold up but so far so good.

Poor Quality and Customer Service
by Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)
May 31, 2016

I purchased this record player and found the sound quality to be poor. The device broke within the first few uses (sound became extremely distorted). I mailed the device to Boytone for repairs, incurring significant shipping costs (~60% of the price) due to the size/weight of the device and was denied reimbursement (after a dozen or so follow-ups) for the shipping. Felt pretty disregarded through the whole process, definitely wouldn't buy another Boytone product.

Fantastic!!!!!

I have been looking for a record player for a long time that didn't cost me an arm and leg.

Boytone delivered with a multifunctional, inexpensive and easy to use player.

When I'm not home it allows me to take the music with me with the option to record the music and if I don't want to listen to a record I plus in my phone or SD card and I'm set.

Absolutely Fantastic product, I will be purchasing from this seller again in the short future.

I haven't have time to review it till now, I'm really happy with the purchase, I'll definitely recommend it to all of my ones that have vinyl discs, the sound of the speakers are kind of poor but I connect the unit to a sound sistem that I have at home and sounds pretty much better, everything works but the cassette, it stops continuously that I have to take the cassette of the unit, I have a old vinyl discs and I have a brand new vinyl disc that plays pretty awesome, in other words I'm pretty happy with this product

Worth the money for what it is. Instructions sort of vague though.
by Glenn W (4 out of 5 stars)
February 7, 2017

For the time I have used the unit, it did pretty well, and well worth the fifty dollars spent on purchasing it. Play speed, display, and clarity all seem to be as good or better than expected. Making individual tracks on the flash drive requires good timing since there is a delay in when the flash drive actually starts recording from the record, so practice is needed to get a good clean start and finish to each song. Putting tracks from the flash drive to ITunes, I thought involved some fancy copying directions, or commands from a menu, but it didn't work that way. In the end, I simply opened the flash drive and minimized the window smaller, dragged the song listing to the computer's home screen, and it copied. Then I was able to do the same action to ITunes, drag and drop from the computer screen into a play list. It would be great if Boytone would give instructions on this aspect of song transfer. You can tell the instructions were written overseas. Sort of vague on some operations of the unit.

I'm very pleased and surprised what it can do!
by Susan Green (4 out of 5 stars)

Amazing to be able to put my tapes and recordings and any radio program on a thumb drive in mp3 format. It's a little tricky to figure out some of the processes, but very doable for this 78-year-old. The only drawback I found is that there are no pre-set buttons for radio stations but that's really not what it's for.

Disappointing, I returned it
by Amazon Customer (2 out of 5 stars)
October 7, 2019

I shouldn't have expected much for the price but if I'm going to invest my time to convert records and tapes to digital, I expect decent quality. This device is convenient, but the audio quality is less than acceptable. I could hear a slight rumble in the audio from both the records and the tapes. This is unacceptable for replacing my analog media with digital. I will search for a better solution.
