So far, it does not appear to reduce the effects of annoying flying insects (updated)
by No Name Texan (3 out of 5 stars)

This arrived a few days ago. The unit arrived intact, we charged it, and utilized it in the evening. We located the unit at the edge of our pergola and patio, about 6 feet above ground, and about 6 feet from the closest anyone might sit. It sun-charged successfully during the following and subsequent days. All components of the unit appear to be functioning correctly. The bug attraction light is a bright blue. The white LEDs for illumination provide illumination downwards, so one has to have the lamp higher to get significant illumination. How well is the unit working in terms of clearing bugs from the area? We are not sure yet.

Our initial first night anecdotal experience is that we were bothered less by flying insects after using the unit than before, though we don't believe it provides a 100% shield. If it zaps bugs, it does this quietly. We have not seen the unit collect dead insects in or around it. It is possible that the unit functions primarily by attracting insects away rather than killing. Not sure. The lantern hook is flimsy, and can easily detach, so in wind, I recommend taking it down if you are hanging it. For now, I am rating five stars. As we gain more information over time on how well this unit functions, I will periodically update my review.

Update after about two weeks: We have not yet seen any evidence that insects have been killed, and so, I am lowering my star rating to four. We are still evaluating the efficacy with regard to reducing the effects of stinging/biting insects, and are unsure of this.

Update after three weeks use. We have still not seen that any insects have been zapped. The unit many or may not be attracting insects away from us. If you are expecting a cloud of insects to be neutralized by zapping, you may not see it with this unit. I am lowering my star rating to three. We will continue to evaluate and update our review in the future.

Update after four weeks: We have still seen no insect remains or any evidence that insects have been zapped. Overall, this device does not seem to have impacted stinging/biting insects. We thought it did when first evaluating, but we find that when using or not using the device, we have roughly the same number of bites. I am lowering my rating to two stars.

We are heading into our fifth week of use, and the unit appears to have zapped an insect last night. We heard a mild electrical discharge sound from the zapper. However the sound was not loud and no flash of light from the discharge. The insect could not be spotted on the grid, but we believe one was indeed zapped. Since the unit does appear to have the capability to zap insects, I am raising my rating to three stars.

We will continue to update our review in the future if we collect new information.

Disappointing bug zapper
by Mike (1 out of 5 stars)

I thought this would be a nice little unit to have in the front yard for when we socialize there. Unfortunately after 4 days, 3 different yards including an overnight stint hanging by the front door which is normally swarming with bugs this thing zapped a total of 10 bugs and was able to trap 2 bugs in its catch tray but didn't kill them.

Pros:

Solar, no need to have an extension cord handy.

Small, and portable. Some neighbors were throwing a bbq and after a few minutes in their backyard, I walked back to the house and got this unit. Unfortunately it didn't do so well...I think it might have zapped 2 bugs the entire time. All of us were eaten alive and ultimately had to retreat to inside their house.

LED lighting. Unexpected bonus, and the LEDs were certainly bright enough. It's not a flashlight, but it would be good to highlight some kind of landscaping that you didn't want people bumping into.

Light sensitive. if you leave it on either 'Pest killing' or 'Light' it will auto turn on and off when it is dark enough. If this worked better, it would be nice to just set it and forget it.

Cons:

Doesn't attract bugs. As I mentioned above, 4 days, 3 different yards (including the neighbors) as well as overnight in an area that is usually swarming with bugs and it only kills a grand total of 10. It caught 2 but left them alive in the basin.

Annoyance/unknown:

There might be a design reason but you have to have the unit on either Pest Kill mode or Light mode to have it recharge via solar.

Overall, I wished this thing could've worked better but no. I'm not expecting to be as cleansing of my other plug in unit, but really only 10 bugs.

Couldn't hurt a fly
by Robert K. (2 out of 5 stars)

I bought this for camping and it didn't seem to work. It is when I tried using it at home I found out just how little it works. I had a fly that had gotten in my place and it was annoying me. Then I realized that I had just charged the bug zapper, I'll fry that little bastard. So I turned it on and set it on a shelf next to the light it kept flying around. It was not attracted to it at all, so I turned the light off hoping it would go towards the bug zapper. Once again it ignored it and started flying around my TV that I was trying to watch. Finally it was time for bed and the fly still buzzing around so I left it on figuring that with no other lights on it would finally attract it. I was correct. When I woke in the morning I did not see the fly anywhere. Then I was turning off the zapper and heard it buzzing around inside of it. It got the fly but only because it couldn't figure out how to get out from behind the bars. I turned it back on and watched the fly bumping against the bars like it was a glass window. The fly eventually died from old age or lack of food. It makes an ok lantern when it's on LED mode. Not great but ok. I'd give it 1 star as a bug zapper and give the lantern half 3. So a combined 2 stars. I'm very disappointed.

It is OK but not all that bright

I bought two of these thinking it would help in my garden. After two days there is no garden pests on the electrodes. However there are a number of mozzies. If your problem is with mozzies, gnats this may be for you. My guess camping would also be a plus. Anyway I'm back to my plug in bug zappers.

Was a little skeptical at first but the solar powered bug zapper seems to charge well and hold its charge all night. I'm not sure whether it actually attracts bugs or not but it does have dead bugs on it after a week and the bugs don't seem to be as dense around the back door as they were before hanging out the bug zapper. So I think it is working.

2 hot, humid weeks, 0 dead insects
by Chris Halos (1 out of 5 stars)

I wish I had noticed that the majority of the positive reviews on this product are from users that were given discounts for their "honest" reviews. I've been using this for two weeks now and it's been hot and humid every evening. I'll start with the good...

PROS:
(1) solar-powered
(2) I like the LED-light feature, although it's not why I purchased it

CONS:
(1) Running every night during a humid summer in an apartment complex on the edge of a wooded area (tons of insects), it has killed ZERO insects. My porch neighbor has a bug zapper that you plug in (about 20 feet away), and his is constantly zapping bugs. I didn't expect this to be as efficient, but ZERO?
(2) Will not work until it's full dark outside (I don't know about where you live, but the bugs are worst here before the sun goes down). I realize you could technically trick it by completely covering the solar panel on top to THINK it's dark outside, but what this needs is a manual override button. Why not give us the control over whether it's automatic or not? A huge oversight in my opinion.
(3) The bulb that's supposed to be attracting insects gives off an attractive blue glow, but it must not be enough life to really interest insects, because they don't even notice it.

I was really hoping this would do the trick, but it looks like I will be ordering a light socket power adapter and a real bug zapper to replace this.

Pretty Darn Good
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

We tried it at home (we live on 5 acres in the countryside) and then again while we were camping up in the mountains. We have had it now for a year and we are very satisfied with its performance and life span so far. It works great during the summers here when more mosquitos/insects are around. We have used the mini-brush to clean the sides off, so we know its doing its job.

In the winter, we actually had to use it as a flashlight, its lightweight and comes with a handle. The zapper has a removable stake that easily attaches on and off, super convenient when you need a little more height off the ground and to illuminate a little larger area.

Highly recommend this item and will purchase again if mine ever goes bad.

(Go to the light)

The solar recharge feature is great. The A/C power feature is also good. The LED light option is useable. The plug in site for A/C power is in the underside of the mushroom head, use some care or the power cord could pull out. Easy clean out of insect guests. I knocked the Zapper over, (it's a bit top-heavy) and the device keeps working. One star off due to some mosquitos preferring to bite us on occasion instead of "going to the light." So far caught a few june bugs ( one month or so in use.) Waiting to find mosquito parts in the collection tray. Maybe the 800 volts generated incinerates them? Good Mosquito Zapper
by Donk13 (5 out of 5 stars)
September 21, 2016

It definitely appears to reduce mosquitos. We used a pair of these lamps on a recent camping trip in a high mosquito area and they seemed to do the job nicely. This was particularly apparent when the mosquitos present were actually significantly reduced after dark when the lanterns' mosquito lamps turned on. (The mosquito lamp does not work in daylight.) The dual charging system (solar or electrical plug-in charger) works well. The LED lantern function works well also (but not when the mosquito lamp is on... you can use one or the other).

Do not buy this if you want bugs dead
by James Jameson,Top Contributor: Photography (2 out of 5 stars)
June 28, 2015

Used this throughout the summer. Millions of mosquitos, and every other bug under the sun to choose from, but this thing was lucky to catch 30 mosquitos per week. Very disappointing bug zapper. Plus it's really only for night time use, due to the solar function/auto power ON/OFF. It will not attract mosquitos away from you. The mosquitos will not even go toward the Zapper unless you are no where around.

It is small, quiet, and electricity free, but all those things combined don't matter if the product is essentially useless.

Thumbs down
