Extremely satisfied

I ordered this tent 2/22/16 after stumbling on it here on Amazon. I've been wanting a rooftop tent for several years, but not wanting to spend the $1600+ on the bigger more well known brands out there. I've compared them all. From what I can tell, this tent is built with the same quailty and materials as the higher priced tents on the market. The included annex room, and the good reviews here on Amazon was the push I needed to buy. I ordered the tent on a Monday and it was delivered to my door that Friday. I have used the tent 2 weekends in a row, both times in less than ideal camping weather here in the Pacific Northwest. It rained hard with high winds this last time and the tent did not disappoint. I have not yet used the annex room, but it will come in handy on multi-day trips when privacy is needed for changing or an extra sleeping area. The only thing missing on all these roof top tents is lighting. There are tons of solutions out there, however I chose to hardwire two 12v automotive led strips into tent, 1 above the ladder and 1 inside the tent on the center support pole. It was an $20 upgrade that makes a huge difference when the sun goes down. I am extremely satisfied with this purchase and the prompt shipping from Tuff Stuff.

Fantastic roof top tent for a fraction of the price of the other brand names.

When I first started researching rooftop tents, I was looking at the $2000-3000 tents because they were well known names and everyone recommended them over anything else. Through my research, I saw people saying all of these rooftop tents are actually one tent with different names on them, which was the push I needed to purchase this tent at a fraction of the cost of the others.

Now, although this tent looks like the ARB Simpson III, it is not the same tent. The ARB uses different materials and ever so slight design differences. That being said, this is an EXCELLENT tent! The instructions are pretty bad. If you're not adept at figuring things out on your own, get a buddy to help that is. There were no instructions at all for the annex, but it's easy enough to figure out. An unexpected surprise was the addition of a ratcheting wrench in the included tools. It wasn't required and it's not a top name brand, but it made the process where it was needed fly by.

The construction and materials are great. The floor is aluminum, the poles are aluminum, and the hinges and brackets that take the most stress are stainless steel. The fabric is a heavy duty ripstop material that doesn't feel cheap. All of the seams are sewn and welded/sealed. The window zippers are smooth and chunky enough to take abuse. The zipper around the tent where it attaches to the annex has a little too much give. Getting the annex zipped on is a slow, tedious process in some areas.

Setup is fast. In 5 minutes or less you can be inside the tent and relaxing. Figuring out how to insert the metal rods for the rain fly was perplexing at first. From my vantage point, the spots where the rods went looked like just dimples in the aluminum. There are actually deep holes drilled and the rods have to go in nearly vertical with the ground. Once they're in, they aren't going anywhere.

Putting it away is nearly as fast as setting it up. I really, really like the fact that the cover isn't super tight fitting. There's room for the cover to shift around and expand and contract with the weather. The last thing I'd want to do on a freezing last day in camp is try and stretch a super thick cover over a tent after the cover has shrunk.

I really look forward to camping with this tent!

I was amazed at first with just how easy this tent is ...

I waited a few months to post this review so that I could use the tent a couple of times and become familiar with it before giving an opinion. I was amazed at first with just how easy this tent is to setup. In a matter of minutes after parking in your camping spot, the tent is ready to go. My first camping trip with the RTT, I set the whole thing up; annex room, propped the windows open, annex floor, etc. The annex is a nice addition, especially if you are camping with a dog or other people. It was perfect for my dog. The annex feels much bigger than I imagined and the floor is made out of the same material as the driving cover for the tent, very sturdy. It only adds about 10 minutes to the setup time. The zippers and the stitching that hold everything together appear strong and well-constructed. As for the tent, the mattress is comfortable and there are plenty of pockets and hooks to hang/attach things. It can get a little hot in the sun, but it has 2 windows and 2 doors that can be completely opened or opened to the netting that can mitigate the heat. Closing the tent is a little more difficult, but still quicker than packing up a traditional tent. There is some material overhang when you fold the tent over that you have to tuck in the sides before you put the driving cover back on. The second trip I went on, I didn't put the annex on and I don't think I ever will unless I have my dog or other people. Setup was so much easier and quicker without the annex.

Some things I noticed after using the tent:

My Jeep XJ is not as tall as some jeeps and the annex was designed for a taller ride height which causes it to bunch up at the bottom. We had some rain during my first trip and the only leaks we had were due to this annex design. The rain water leaked through the bottom zipper of the annex that attaches the floor to the walls. If my jeep were maybe 3 inches taller I would not have had this problem and most people won't. You can also stack packs or other items along the walls of the annex to compensate for the height of your vehicle. I dont consider this a design flaw because it can be easily mitigated.

Another thing I realized is that the ladder does not provide support for the tent. The tent is fully supported by tension from the material and nylon straps attached to the internal poles of the tent. You could theoretically fold the ladder up while inside the tent with no problems.

If you are going to pack up the tent in the morning when condensation is high, you will need to air out the tent when you get home before packing it away. I neglected to do this after my first trip and on my second trip a month later, I noticed some mold had developed in a few spots on the tent. This was my own fault and the mold was easily removed with some lysol and a rag. After my next trip I let it air out once I got home. And I will do that after every trip in the future.

It weighs about 110 pounds. Taking it on and off the vehicle is manageable with 2 people, but is easy with 3 or more. I have some Thule rails that I was able to easily mount to using the hardware provided with the tent. I have heard people say that you need gutter mounted rails or something sturdier to mount this. Mine are not gutter mounted rails and I have had no problems driving with this 70+ mph on 300 mile trips. However, I would not mount this to factory rails.

High quality... I would put this up against any of the Tapui's

We love it, camped in it one night in heavy winds and worked great, then took it to Colorado, and different locations in New Mexico and slept like babies. Once you have set up the Annex one time it's really not bad to set up. The first time set up took a little time to figure out due to no directions on how to install it. Overall, I would put this up against any of the Tapui's. Well worth the money and about $1000 less than the other brands and comes with the annex! Main tent setup only takes like 5 mins tops.

Virtually the same as Tepui and ARB. Built well. Excellent customer service from Tuff Stuff. Overall, love this tent. Just an FYI, Jeep with 4 inch lift and 35's will require the ladder and annex extension. Package deal from Tuff Stuff.

I researched these tents like crazy and am happy I came across this one.

Great tent.

I really like this tent. It was easy to put on my jeep and is easy to set up. The fabric of the main tent is much heavier duty than I expected. The tent on top of my jeep is much more stable than I expected. I'm 6'4" and weigh 300 pounds it's very stable and does not rock around. It folds up very easy. The tent on top of my jeep is much more stable than I expected.

The tent was very comfortable for two of us sleeping. Three may be able to sleep but it would be close.

The annex provides a lot of extra room. We had three folding chairs and a small table allowing us to escape from the mosquitoes. The annex has a removable floor that is very heavy duty and waterproof. Our first use of the tent was in British Columbia. It rained for several hours and we were dry in the top part. We did hav a little water in the lower part but I want to look closer into it to make sure it was not operator error. I can fold the tent with three sleeping bags and a blanket freeing up lots of room in the Jeep.

Shipping was very fast. Purchased, delivered, and installed in a week.

I hardly notice the tent while driving and averages 16-17 MPG. I'm very pleased so far.

Rooftop Tent=Awesome!! Annex - Not recommended.
by Amazon Customer (3 out of 5 stars)
May 19, 2019

I am rating this a three. First, I want to say the rooftop tent is fantastic and is made extremely well. On our first use; however, we had to endure rain for more than 8 hours and while the roof top stayed dry, the annex leaked along every seam. This became very annoying as we thought it would be water tight and all our dry items would stay dry. Not the case. If I had to do over again, I would not purchase the annex. I recommend coming up with something else. There is only one zipper for the floor. Recommend the manufacturer install a second one. Our other issue is the needed height for the annex. We have a Ford Raptor, and in order for the annex to work properly we would need to heighten the truck by a foot. Suggestion: make an annex that can me adjusted or either a shorter and wider annex.

I will start by saying I am by no means an expert on all things overlanding. However I do have experience backpacking and camping. That being said my experience so far with this rooftop tent has been awesome! It was a breeze to attach the hardware onto the tent. One thing to note is check where the predrilled holes are on the aluminum tent base and inside the tent there will be metal shavings on and below the mattress pad from the holes. Easily removed with a vacuum. Setting up onto your vehicle is also very easy and comes with instructions. If you need any more detailed instructions then you can find tons of YouTube videos of it.

My first time sleeping in the tent was a week ago out on the beach in Wilmington NC. This tent did great. My girlfriend and I both had plenty of room. There was a nice breeze with all the windows and the mesh screen did not allow any bugs in.

Overall I would recommend this tent to anyone looking into getting a rooftop tent. It has a great price point and is made with most (if not all) the same high quality products most of these other tent companies use.

Overall Happy but a Few Minor Issues
by Maddison M (4 out of 5 stars)
May 11, 2019

We ordered our tent on May 1 & we were promptly called with delivery information (it is delivered freight) and received the order on May 10. Happy with the service thus far.

On opening the package we noticed that one of the straps was broken - minor issue as we simply unscrewed the plastic strip and reattached it - did notice that other straps had reinforcement but this one didn't so that was something to note.

Easy setup attaching rails etc. Instructions aren't the clearest but once you start putting it together it makes sense - just allow for some annoying reaching and grabbing between things you can't see.

Once we had it up on the car we were pleasantly surprised at how easy setup was and it only took up 5 mins even though we'd never set it up before.

Another issue once we attached the awning, the zipper is broken in one section making attaching it difficult and we shall see how this further impacts using the awning we are worried about how this will impact future use (didn't get photos as we were blocking the alley and needed to move back in in a hurry) so will make sure to get pictures next time and see how this will really impact use.

Overall happy for the price, hoping that the zip issue is an easy fix like the strap. Bed seems comfortable for the 5 mins spent in it - excited to get out and use it.
