2015 Blu-ray IS the 113 minute, uncut version!by David Keppel (5 out of 5 stars)

There isn't much to say about this phenomenal occult thriller that hasn't already been said. So instead of reviewing the film itself (which, for me, is a top 10 all time film favorite) I thought I would clarify both the running time and the uncut status. Despite Amazon and the movie's cover both listing it as having an 89 minute running time, I can tell you that it IS the uncut version of the film, with a running time of 113 minutes. I don't know how or why that incorrect running time ever got out there but you can disregard it. I would also add that the Blu-ray transfer is excellent, as is the audio. This is the best that Angel Heart has ever looked and sounded and this Blu-ray is a must-have for any fan of the film. I am very enthusiastically thrilled with this release, with the exception of the inexplicable running time inaccuracy.
Too rich a banquet to be digested in just one sitting

I've watched this film on cable TV, later on VHS cassette, and now on (better fidelity) DVD. Angel Heart somewhat resembles the film The Exorcist: the wealth of detail (the film wonderfully depicts 1950s Louisiana) can obscure the plot, but repeated viewings provide better understanding. Harry Angel (played by Mickey Rourke) is a smart-aleck private investigator who does the job while avoiding personal involvement. An eccentric client Louis Cyphere (played by Robert De Niro) seeks to locate an individual owing a long-standing debt. The search takes Harry Angel first to Harlem and then to Louisiana where he meets Evangeline Proudfoot (played by Lisa Bonet), a voodoo young priestess. As Harry Angel encounters more trouble at each step, Louis Cyphere smugly offers more money.
The DVD version contains two especially worthwhile extra features that interview New Orleans voodoo practitioners. A twenty minute History of Voodoo in New Orleans feature explains why voodoo is an integral part of New Orleans culture. A twelve minute Voodoo in the Media feature explains that Hollywood sensationalizes voodoo's potential for evil, and that New Orleans voodoo is practiced primarily as a benign religion. The two features are a worthwhile introduction to New Orleans voodoo, but remember that the practitioners being interviewed earn part of their incomes from voodoo activities. IMO the book Black & White Magic of Marie Laveau depicts the historically accurate range of voodoo activities practiced by Marie Laveau, the so-called Voodoo Queen Of New Orleans.
Atmospheric detective story delving into the occult

Mickey Rourke is about the perfect actor to capture a sweaty Brooklynite detective tramping through the muddy streets of Louisiana, hunting a missing man for a very, very, very suspicious client. Robert De Niro is about the perfect actor to eat a hard-boiled egg with sophistication and quiet menace.
The twist was spoiled for me, but you'll probably start smelling the whiffs that something just ain't right with Johnny Fortune's story...or Harry Angel's. When Harry asks around about Johnny's whereabouts, too many people are both convinced he's dead, yet convinced they saw him not that long ago.
I'm not sure the end fired off perfectly -- the reveal is given at a breakneck speed, with hardly time to breathe or really digest what the hell is going on. But, I admire how the movie sticks true and firm to its greatest asset: atmosphere. The dark, ghoulish, and depressing air that infiltrates every scene -- even a scene at the beach is a dismal affair. The entire landscape screams at Harry that he needs to turn around...and of course he freaking doesn't.
The best movie I've never heard of.

Wow, what a thriller. Beautifully shot too. I couldn't have guessed the ending till the last 5-10 minutes. The flashbacks throughout the movie was intriguing, and I vaguely guessed it had something to do with Johny Favorite. It just didn't occur to me Johny Heart is Johny Favorite that he was looking for and the elder Krusemark is at the nexus.
You see a movie and it doesn't make sense here and there, but you keep making excuses; it's a movie so you suspend disbeliefs. There often are tons of that in suspense thrillers. There are none in this movie. If there were, it's all makes sense at the end.
Watch this film. You don't come out regretting that you wasted your time.

Yeah, this is the movie that rumors say got Lisa Bonet kicked off the Cosby show by none other than Bill Cosby himself. And while the scene in question was, umm, intense (this is NOT a kids movie), Bonet, Mickey Rourke and Robert DeNiro were fantastic. In the spirit of the hard boiled detective movie, Rourke (who rocks as a 20s-era private eye) is contracted by DeNiro to find someone who owes him named Johnny Favorite - a musician. This leads Rourke to New Orleans where he runs face first into voodoo and Lisa Bonet as a voodoo priestess - which she just nails while being beautiful and very charming in her own unique way. The movie descends rapidly into the creepiest bunch of happenings and deaths you've ever seen which seems to dog Rourkes tail. I won't ruin it for you, but DeNiro just creeped me out more and more throughout the movie and with good reason. Just a superb movie that messes with you throughout.
Dark, disturbing - delightful!

Dark, disturbing - delightful!..one of Mickey Rourke's great performances. Director Alan Parker's genius is on clear display here - he has captured the essence of the superstitious south, the ambiance of the 50's and the menace of the occult underbelly, each intertwined perfectly. The Blu ray transition is perfect & adds a new dimension to this classic horror-mystery. This was a 'twist' movie arriving over a decade before M Knight Shamayalan's one & only hit The Sixth Sense, & in my view a superior production. The only oddly disappointing feature is DeNiro's performance of Lucifer. He couldn't have cared too much for the role because he really phoned it in. I suspect he was there to add dollar value to the product, but I believe it's sustainability is well ensured - no one can be disappointed on a viewing of this macabre & Gothic mystery - a sheer delight.

One of the BESTTTTTTTT all-time horror movies. You've got to watch everything that's going on or you'll miss the nuances. Great twisted plot, great acting. You won't be disappointed by this one! I've watched it ten X and still enjoy it.

The atmosphere makes this movie worth repeated viewings. It's magical and transports the viewer, and the place it takes us is exciting and imaginative. I think a fair amount may be owed to Blade Runner, which was made five years earlier, and which established a high water mark for visionary settings. The large black fans and the way they connect visually with the spinning wheels that lower folks to hell in metal cages--all of that seems atmospherically reminiscent of Blade Runner. But wherever and however the makers got their inspiration, it works. The story itself is so-so. Unfortunately, there's only so much you can do with a tale about a fellow who sells his soul to the devil for earthly success, and then has to deal with the consequences. The twist, while it's clever, doesn't work emotionally. We connect with Rourke. The film goes out of its way to make him likable. The idea that he is simultaneously a satan-worshipping psychopath-sadist isn't credible. We're not given enough information about Rourke's dark side to understand how the duality can exist in one psyche. And of course the reason we're not given this information is to preserve the surprise ending. Still, the film is a cherry.
How Terrible is Wisdom when It Brings No Profit to the Wise
by Frosted Seagull (5 out of 5 stars)

Angel Heart is my favorite movie of all time. The director Alan Parker has created a timeless masterpiece utilising two great talents of our time Mickey Rourke as Harold Angel and Robert De Niro as Louis Cyphre ... Lucifer.
SPOILER ALERT - At that time, 1987, most people did not figure out the obvious (Louis Cyphre is Lucifer) as Mickey Rourke mispronounces the surname Cyphre's throughout the movie. I have noticed that the Amazon summary spoils the "secret" that Louis Cyphre is Lucifer. These days people divulge fact that De Niro is Lucifer immediately spoiling the secret.
Angel Heart and The Mission
De Niro was filming Angel Heart whilst also filming the epic movie - The Mission. Rumor has it that De Niro flew back to the US on weekends or quiet times on The Mission to complete Angel Heart. De Niro plays the bearded Mendoza in The Mission, and has a beard up until the second last scene in Angel Heart.
The story is simple yet brilliant. A man sells his soul for limited fame in World War II New York. We subsequently discover through Harold Angel's investigation that Johnny Liebling, cum Johnny Favorite who was called "golden tonsils" just prior to WWII with limited fame as a crooner. Like all alleged Faustian pacts with the Prince of Darkness it was short lived and a debt subsequently owed. Johnny Favorite thought that he had a legal occult loophole found in a n old ancient manuscript where there were incantations in Latin and Greek , and tried to avoid the horrific debt.
The Devil
De Niro's lines are brilliant with my favorite being: "Alas, how terrible is wisdom when it brings no profit to the wise." An excellent line that was borrowed from Oedipus Rex." The last juicy tit bit is De Miro's last appearance in Angel Heart. A few moments prior to the movie's ending, De Niro appears beardless Blink and you'll miss it - he is crouching outside Johnny Favorites' hotel room dressed all in black as a nun. Many re-watch Angel Heart again for this scene alone, as they ALL missed it in the repeated viewings. To this day, De Niro playing Louis Cyphre is the best on screen devil or Lucifer.
(NOTE: Another memorable actor playing Lucifer was then then relatively little known Viggo Morgenstein as Lucifer in the 1996 movie, The Prophecy)
SPECIAL FEATURES - As the story unfolds we are taken on a wild dark ride with the dark occult growing. In the SPECIAL FEATURES the director, Alan Parker, claims that the story moves south to Louisiana to highlight this fact that we are moving to the hot swamps of the Deep South which is to reprsent a step closer to hell. I missed the obvious and that is what I love about Angel Heart. Every time I watch Angel Heart I discover something new.
Mickey Rourke
One of Mickey Rourke's finest efforts. He guides us the audience through the unravelling of the story with the scene with De Niro in a Louisiana church being the crux of the film. Rourke is swearing in church with Louis Cyphre constantly reminding him of his surroundings to which Angel(Rourke) replies that he doesn't care as churches give him the creeps. Angel he that the is coming across too much religion. De Niro then says " they say there is just enough religion to make men hate each other, BUT, not enough to love one another."
There are rumors that Angel Heart may be re-made in 2013, I don't know why. We saw Total Recall re0made in 2012 and it was a useless effort as it no doubt, will be with Angel Heart. You cannot improve on perfection.
This is why Angel Heart is my favorite film as it is a simple story, brilliantly executed.

Great Atmospheric Occult Mystery Horror Classic
by Raven (5 out of 5 stars)

Angel Heart is one of those great old atmorpheric horror classics, set in the 19 50s this film has all the great elements murder, mystery, suspense, the occult, and drama with some voodoo added for spice it is loaded with plot twists all in all it is the perfect blend. I love the actors who all give excellent performences and convincingly nportray their chracters. ( Mickey Roarke ) plays Private detective Harry Angel who has a mysterious past and a very special secret of his own that will shock the hell out of you and blow your mind
( Lisa Bonet ) The Cosby Show plays Epiphany Proudfoof the young beauty Harry meets who is one of the prticipants of a voodoo ceremony and also one of the women dancing in it later on the two begin a passionate love affair. ( Robert Dinero ) is deliciously wicked as Louis Cyphere who calls on the Brooklyn PI Harry Angel for his services but at the same time seems to be subtly taunting him which puts them at odds with and in conflict with one another. This all leads up to a flashback to the 19 30s that reveals and tells all about a shocking event that took place in the past and one that will blow you away. The end is so freakin creepy it had me saying oh my god, near the end keep your eyes on the fan blades and watch the baby I don't wanna give too much away
