Wonderful Workout Machine & Satisfactory Commuter Bikeby Wirail (5 out of 5 stars)
March 15, 2019
I've owned and ridden the Elliptigo 8C for about 3 months now. I use the bike for my daily commute in the Bay Area. As of now, I rate this product 4 1/2 stars, but I'm giving the Elliptigo 8C the benefit of the doubt here and giving it the full 5. I believe the higher model (the 11R) probably rates a genuine 5 stars. I'm going to break this review down into the topics that I cared about when I purchased the Elliptigo.
KNEES & LOWER BACK - Compared to a bicycle, the Elliptigo is most definitely easier on the knees and lower back. In fact, preserving my joint health is/was the primary reason for buying this bike. So, I was happy to learn that the Elliptigo's claims are true on this point, at least for me.
OVERALL WORKOUT - I was pleasantly surprised to notice that the Elliptigo gives a fairly decent workout for your core muscles. A normal bike only works out your legs and arms. You get the benefit of running without the wear, tear, and impact of running on a hard surface. I feel myself gradually becoming more slender and toned as the weeks pass.
SPEED - Speed is a bit disappointing due to the Elliptigo's small wheels. On a flat surface, the 8C is slower than an average biker on a medium gear casually pedaling. You'll have to pedal fairly hard to keep up with normal bicycles. If the 8C had faster gears for a flat surface, it would be my perfect ride and shave off around 5 minutes from my commute. For this reason, I stated that the higher-end 11R is probably the Elliptigo with the genuine 5 star rating. The Elliptigo has another downside when it comes to speed. Headwind can be your archenemy. Because you're standing up, your body is basically acting like a sail, and adverse winds can make pedaling harder than on a normal bike. This isn't a big deal on most days, it just makes for a better workout. On rare days with high winds, it can feel brutal.
BALANCE & MANEUVERABILITY - As mentioned by other reviewers, maintaining balance on the Elliptigo is an adjustment. Normal bikes feel more stable because the seat gives you an extra point of contact with the bike frame in which to keep balance. But, maintaining balance on the Elliptigo isn't difficult. You get used to it fairly quickly. But riding with only one hand can be tricky (making signaling difficult) and riding with no hands feels impossible. And even after 3 months, sharp turns still feel precarious. Is the Elliptigo balance dangerous? Hard to tell. Probably not. The Elliptigo's different balance is the reason for it delivering a better workout than a normal bike. Your head is certainly much higher on the Elliptigo than a normal bicycle (my height is 5' 11" so I occasionally have to duck tree branches and low street signs while riding an Elliptigo). And in the beginning, the extra head height does honestly make you feel more vulnerable. It's one of the first things you notice while riding this bike. You should most definitely wear a helmet on an Elliptigo. Because of your dramatically-increased head height, if you take a hard fall, it could be dangerous (helmet or not). At the same time, your butt is not stuck to a seat, and your legs don't straddle anything. In the event of a crash, you could theoretically leap off and roll... or otherwise save yourself. The Elliptigo is most certainly not designed to go off-road, ride on wet surfaces, or navigate anything remotely challenging. This was no surprise to me because the makers themselves warn against using the Ellipigo on anything but dry, smooth roads. On challenging surfaces, the Elliptigo loses much of its stability. I would definitely hesitate to ride this bike after a rainfall, but that consideration would be the same on a normal bike, just less urgent. Transitioning from street to smooth dirt to street again is often enough to throw me off-balance. Riding off a sidewalk curb is a no-no because of the Elliptigo's low-sitting pedal board. The 8C is a heavy machine, and this gives it a sense of stability, but small things (rocks, branches, small sidewalk crevices) tend to jolt the frame in dramatic ways if your tires hit them wrong. Definitely, you should watch where you're riding.
PUBLIC ATTENTION - No, I didn't buy an Elliptigo to be noticed, but people will notice you. As you ride by, adults will often stare. Children are delighted. And for some reason, many small dogs often consider the Elliptigo a mortal threat.
CONCLUSION - The 8C admirably serves all the purposes for which I bought it (joint health, workout, commute). I consider the potential negatives listed above to be acceptable or able to be adapted around. I think if I could make this purchase over again, I'd buy the higher model, the 11R, for the sake of increased speed on a flat surface.
Great for injured runners; a better workout than a traditional bike; llamas look at you

I've ridden an ElliptiGO exclusively since April 2013, and over several thousand miles have found it to be big fun, an excellent workout, and a great way to get some miles in without the impact of running - it's the next best thing to running if you're injured. I prefer it to a traditional bike because there's no discomfort in all the classic sore spots for biking - butt, neck, arms, hands - and because you get a great view when standing upright, rather than looking at the pavement. It's easy to get used to because you're standing up, and we all know how to balance standing better than sitting anyway.
It's about 30% harder (and thus slower) than biking due to the weight and lack of aerodynamic position, but that just makes it a better workout, and I can still maintain about 15 mph on the flats if I work at it (I did a 100 mile ride averaging 14.8 mph with little difficulty). With the 8-speed hub, I've been able to get up even the steepest hills - after all, what do you do on a bike to climb a steep hill? You stand up, but you're already standing on an ElliptiGO. You can't go downhill as fast as biker can, due to the extra wind resistance, but I've still hit 40 mph coasting down on really steep hills - luckily, the brakes are strong.
Downsides? There's no place to attach panniers, so you can't carry as much as on a bike. And you'll need a special rack to put it on your car (or you'll have to put it inside, which is doable but fussy). You can't take an ElliptiGO on trails, and you won't want to ride much on dirt roads, since getting a tiny pebble in the tracks makes bad noises. You must have one hand on the handlebars at all times - no riding hands-free. And of course, you have to be willing to explain all about the ElliptiGO to every biker you meet because everyone asks the same questions (most of which I'm answering here). Oh, and you can't draft off bikers, but they can draft off you.
Nearly anything that could go wrong mechanically is based on standard bike parts, so there's no trouble getting the ElliptiGO serviced at your local bike shop, and the support people at ElliptiGO are also top-notch and willing to help you with any problems you may have over email or the phone.
There's no question you'll stand out on an ElliptiGO, but unless you're horribly shy, that's a plus too, since cars pay more attention to you. Oddly, llamas I've passed also seem to notice the ElliptiGO more than bikers or runners. And everyone likes llamas.

The learning curve might be steep but will only take two rides before you feel very confident on this thing. Just remember to put all your weight on when leg when mounting or dismounting that is what helped me. This thing is brutal! You really get a good workout! But then again the gearing is very nice and there's nowhere you can't go. I am in moderately good shape and I go for a few minutes and then let it Coast for a minute or two to catch my breath and I can go quite far that way.

I've had my 8C just about two years and ridden thousands of miles. I'm a master runner who was looking for that "edge" over those around me in my age group of runners, and....this is the ticket! Now I can take a cross-training day without fear of loosing my fitness! In fact, it has only enhanced it b/c I get an equal, if not better cardio workout on days when I shouldn't be "pounding the pavement". I often use it as a secondary workout on hard days, or just use it alone when the body needs a break between training seasons as it keeps that high-level of cardio going. Aside from the fitness bene's, this is a VERY well built piece of equipment! I've never had an issue with the quality of the product. And, the customer service in Solana Beach from ElliptiGO has been totally AWESOME! I did have a small glitch with my rear hub at one point. However, when I called the service team, they asked me a few questions, but took care of it right away! When they determined I needed a rear hub replacement, within one week ElliptiGO sent a brand new rear hub assembly with a prepaid label for me to return my existing one! Now that's WOW service!! If you're serious about cross-training or want a really great way to attain high-end fitness, you won't be disappointed with this purchase- ever! You may be hesitating on a purchase due to the price tag, but consider this an investment in SO MANY WAYS!! Now, what are you waiting for....get out there and "GO" on your ElliptiGO!!
Sore muscles not joints!

My wife has an old knee and back injury from her college basketball days and I have plantar fasciitis from running and general over use. Our doctor has been telling us that we are wearing out! To maintain a healthy "quality of life" for years to come, he recommended that we use an elliptical workout and to take up biking to cross train. I like biking, but every spring my "back side" has to acclimate to the painful process of firing up after the long winter and staying indoors to workout on an elliptical is not my favorite. We saw the Elliptigo on their web site and decided to give it a try. We settled on the 8C since we have hills to climb. We were immediately hooked and it became our favorite workout. It was also quickly apparent that we were going to need two. We enjoy riding together and we especially love the looks that we get riding them. I have been stopped by many friends, neighbors, and even strangers, all wanting to give the Elliptigo a whirl. The things that we like the most are:
1. You don't have to wear special clothing like you do biking (bike shorts and shoes). You just put your helmet on and go and of course there is no saddle soreness!
2. We love the low impact on our knees and feet. After a good ride our muscles are sore but our joints are not!
3. We are outside!
4. We love the fact that we are standing up and can see the world around us.
5. The biggest surprise was the workout that your arms and back get.
6. Lastly, I have had to call the company a couple of times about some quick questions. Awesome customer service!
Our advice is to get out there.......and to do it on an Elliptigo!

Fun But Not Stable

This is a heavy bike and the upright riding position (albeit easy on the back) makes the rider feel top-heavy. The relatively small 20" wheels exacerbate the feeling of imbalance. In spite of the heavy weight of frame + rider, the bike has low quality side-pull brakes when it should have disc brakes for greater stopping power. The rollers under the pedals are just plastic, so the roller-motion is somewhat rough. This could be easily remedied if the manufacturer used a higher end roller such as found on even entry-level roller blade skates. The most that can be said for this bike is that the frame itself is solidly built. Unfortunately the geometry of the riding position coupled with inferior components, results in a twitchy and unstable-feeling ride. Considering that one of the main advertised benefits of this bike is being an alternative for runners who are of an age that they need to be protecting their knees, this same [older] population is at greater risk for falling, since proper balance both in riding the bike and dismounting from the bike are paramount. Is it fun? Sure. Is it safe? Not so much ( with the possible exception of limiting one's riding to level and low-traffic roads that would not require sudden stops or turns). Price? Ridiculous. Save your money and your body; use the stationary elliptical at your gym.

I am 57 and had found myself badly out of shape and needing to lose weight. I bought an 8C used about 3 years ago, but to be honest, I was in such bad shape that I got winded after just a few minutes. So it sat in the garage. This past December I ended up in the emergency room with dangerously high blood pressure, and determined to FINALLY do something about it. I started using my Life Fitness elliptical machine daily, and started seeing dramatic improvements in my conditioning, blood pressure, and even weight (down 30 lbs).
When the weather warmed up, I got the elliptigo back out and now it's my favorite workout by far. It's smooth and very easy on my knees and joints, and takes full advantage of the conditioning I have built up from the elliptical machine. I do with there was a way to exchange 1 or 2 of the lowest gears for a couple more on the higher end. 8th gear is good for flat terrain, but it would be nice to have 9 and 10 for downhill runs.
You definitely get looks on the ElliptiGo, and the quality and durability are good. Mine shifts very smoothly and I've been satisfied with it. Would love to ride an 11R sometime to see the difference, but probably never will.

I love all three of my ElliptiGOs. I had spotted someone riding one exactly 5 years ago after I had stopped recreationally running due to foot issues two weeks prior and there was no turning back. I took one for a test ride, was sold and immediately purchased one. I now own three. An 11R, 8C and 3C. I live in an area of uphills, downhills and flatlands. My 11 and 8 gear ElliptiGOs can handle every type of road terrain and I ride my 3 gear in areas with less elevation and to cross train. The ElliptiGO has got to be one of the best cycling devices on the market for hill climbing and downhill riding is a complete blast. As a matter of fact, generally riding the ElliptiGO is a rush. A vessel that promotes endorphin release. Being an early owner, the accomplishments I have seen of what fellow ElliptiGO owners/riders have achieved is mind boggling as far as distance, elevation & endurance. Testimony to the quality of the device and wanting to utilize it. It's a wonderful, non impactual piece of cross training equipment, used for competitive sport, great for getting me in shape and excellent for pulmonary cardiovascular. I highly recommend an ElliptiGO, cannot speak enough about them, and there are no limits to them. Check out ElliptiGO's in depth website for information regarding service and what they have to offer. They have an awesome customer support/service department that can be reached via online or phone. My local bike shop services my ElliptiGOs and reaches out to the company when necessary for advice on service or parts needed with excellent, prompt response & delivery.
Average Guy Learning to Love ElliptiGo

I'm NOT a former runner, biker or triathlete. I have tried to stay active through the years and last year at the age of 55, decided to get into running. I read that over 80% of runners get injured in one form or another. After 9 months of trying to carefully work my way into running, including core routines etc. to help prevent typical runners injuries, I find myself still "running" into minor physical issues e.g. hamstring, IT band, hip issues, etc. I actually bought an ElliptiGo to help me cross-train for running, but now I am beginning to think that the ElliptiGo may become my primary means of exercise. So far, every minor injury I have had, I have been able to ride the ElliptiGo without a problem even though I had to stop running for awhile. With that background, here is my opinion so far having owned the ElliptiGo for just a few months. The bike itself has been great. If you can ride a bike, you can ride this no problem in my opinion. It is made with top-quality parts that are easy to maintain and service. I got the 3c model which only has 3 speeds. Their website is wonderful. So far I have been able to learn how to do all the required maintenance (not much different then maintaining a bike I am told) just by watching the service videos on their website and I have never worked on a bike before. When I have called in, the customer service has been prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable. Do I like it? I love it! It has really grown on me in just a few short months. At first I thought it might be odd to be standing and not sitting like a regular bike but now I can't imagine going back to a regular bike. For me, the ElliptiGo seems to be the answer I have been looking for.
