Save your money and don't buy this.

This is the first review I've written on Amazon, but after the worst 3 days with a product, I had to review it. I received this on Monday 6-19. I downloaded the associated app, registered with the app and I thought all would be well. After reviewing the instructions it was a simple press of the center button once you register the product to use the app with the lock. But for some reason it was not working. After an hour of consulting the "user guide" and master lock's support website I was still unable to unlock the lock and remove it from the packaging. Finally I decide to remove the battery and try to "jump" the lock. This is a backup option that is available. But this option would not work either. Finally I decide to try another battery that I have at home and low and behold it works. So I got the lock with a preinstalled battery that was dead. So the following morning (Tuesday 6-20) I go and purchase a brand new battery to put in the lock as I don't want to use the one around the house incase it's almost dead. I proceed to use the lock Tuesday night at Planet Fitness and all works fine. Now comes today (Wednesday 6-21), I go to the gym and unlock my lock to put on the locker. After a 2 hour session at the gym, I go in to get my bag, keys, wallet, etc. and I can not open the lock. I press the center button and get nothing. I try the primary dial code and nothing. I pull the battery out to try the jump option and nothing. So I had to go to the front desk and ask them to cut the lock off of my locker because I had no way to get home, or buy another battery. This lock killed a brand new battery in less than 48 hours. So now I am out the cost of this lock because it truly is garbage. I wish I could leave a half star rating because the only good part was for the one day I actually got it to work, it did perform exactly as it should have.

Good padlock with a really bad app.

This Smart Padlock from Master Lock is innovative and allows for sharing of virtual keys. That functionality is very convenient, and so far the lock itself has performed flawlessly. I am less impressed with the app you need to run this lock. I know of several times when it has not updated the history of usage to my phone when accessed by other people. That's really bad: access management was one of the reasons I bought it. The other is that the app is really poorly designed. The interface looks outdated and is confusing to use, and the instructions in the box actually point you to download the wrong app for it. The lock app has been frustrating for a power user: I cannot imagine if a novice was using it. Overall, I would say the lock is a winner, the app is a loser, and MasterLock should rewrite the app from the ground up, making it simple and easy to use.

Beta product at best....

Upon receiving this lock, I went through the initial setup without issue.... boom. Lock unlocked with phone. That was the last time it reliably did so. After that, it didn't matter how close the phone was to the lock... didn't matter if I was on the "lock list" screen of the app, or in the specific lock where it says "you can now unlock your lock"... it would not unlock 8 out of 10 times. When it would unlock appeared totally random. I'm returning it tomorrow.

Don't buy it until you confirm App is updated

Bought these locks so we could quit changing locks out when an employee got fired or quit. I was under the assumption that I could allow access to all employees and revoke individual people as needed. That is not the case at all. The bluetooth function works fine, but only the person who registered the lock has bluetooth access. If you want to allow other people to access the lock, you have to send them a text message with manual operations and there are only 4 hour blocks it can be used ( 5am-9am, 9am-1pm, etc). These blocks are preset too. You are not allowed to manually give access at your preferred times. Example: If you give access to the lock at 5am-9am you must send out access to lock before 5am or that person will have to wait until the next block (9am-1pm) before they can access it. So say you don't get up until 5am and you haven't sent the text and your people start work at 7am. The way this thing is set up, the first time they could open the lock would be 9am.

Contacted tech support and they got back to me telling me I could allow access by giving permissions in the app. Told me to go into "manage lock" menu and click on "guest". Problem is, there is no "guest" to click on. I brought that to their attention and have not heard from them since.

Buy a Noke lock. I received their version last week and it is much more user friendly. Much better performance if you are looking for customize access.

Useful Lock

Works great. I gave it a 4-star because the app could be better. While it works great on my phone, I find that sharing access (like with my wife) so others can access it via the app on their phone is problematic. She is still unable to access.
**** UPDATED 12/26/2017 ****

Master Lock customer support responded to me after I initiated a support request on their website. They got back to me this morning with troubleshooting instructions. I was able to follow it. Apparently I had to recalibrate the lock (done this before, but did not uninstall the app from my phone) and it worked. Adding 1 star back to rating since customer support was good. It will not get a 5 star unless the app is improved.
**** UPDATED 12/21/2017 ****

I purchased this lock in November 2016. It has been working well, except fort the app. Anyway, I've noticed that lately I have been having to go into locker mode to manually enter the combination to unlock it. I figured it may have been the battery running low, so now that I'm off for the holidays, I decided to tinker with it. I changed the battery and fussed with it as much as I can. It looks like the Bluetooth unit is no longer working and I'm just shy past the 1 year warranty. I'm stuck with using it in locker mode. I'll see if I can get MasterLock to replace it under warranty and will provide an update if they do.

Works Well , Just as advertised!

I don't write a lot of reviews but I recall seeing a few reviews of this product prior to purchasing and some referred to this lock as "junk"..... I almost didn't order one. I made a comment about that & then got a note from a rep. from the company. He pointed out some things I was missing & I decided to give one of these bluetooth locks a try. So far, it works exactly as advertised and appears to be dependable. I like the fact that if using bluetooth-one just hits button on lock to open & even more important to me... one can send a guest code limited to certain days and hours .... good way to allow access to the lawn crew or anyone else. You can send a code quickly for emergency access and it will operate w/o bluetooth using directional code (Up, Dwn, Left, Rgt)etc. & ... They even offer a way to "jump it" should the battery die. I also want to quickly address customer service. They reached out to me from the very beginning....not trying to sell me but they wanted to be sure I had the facts... I chatted with them a few times and they answered any questions etc...so I am assuming any questions I have AFTER the sale will be answered as well. (should there be any)..... However, so far Ive had zero issues with this lock and I may buy at least one more at the current price. Although I do want to put this one thru its paces for a while longer. I will update if needed. I like this a lot....so far. :-)

Not reliable enough to be useful

I loathe this lock and am going to return for a refund. First of all, even when it works it takes so long that I've ended up pushing the button 2-3 times and started getting my phone out before it turns green to unlock. Really??? What takes soooo long? Most of the time it would not just unlock, I would have to get phone out, open app, wait 5-10 sec, then it would finally open. Every once in a while, I could just walk up with my phone in my pocket, push the button and it actually open...but this was very infrequent. Maybe version 2 will work out the bugs and be a usable product.

Stopped working after one month. Tried new batteries, tried resetting through the website and it simply will not open. The open/closed lights work so it's a mystery why it won't open. I'm really glad it didn't get frozen in the locked position on my gate! I do not recommend this lock.

Well sealed! Makes my life much easier.

So far so good. I've had one from another brand that had water issues. We do get heavy rains here. What I like better with this lock is the larger battery. Our gate gets opened 10-20 times a day. The other advertised 6 months battery life only to discover that is only if you use it once or twice a day.

I did make contact with Master Lock about opening during heavy rainfall and if we could use de-icer on it in the winter. They were emphatic about relocking the lock as soon as possible and try to cover the lock from the rain while it is open. Some water "may" collect on the inside. However when locked it is well sealed.

They are to get back to me about the deicer. Regular locks we heat with a torch to open in the Winter after a freezing rain.

The four buttons on front are easier to hit a combo than dits and dahs of undetermined length done by other locks.

It appears to respond quicker to the phone on unlock and has a nice large icon on the lock to indicate interaction and green for it's unlocked.

Of the bluetooth locks I've researched So far this one appears to work best in our situation. A tow yard impound/accident lot.

Manage your expectations

Like any "smart" product, this thing will not work correctly sometimes. This really seems to be the norm with these types of devices. How much the occasional glitch will bother you depends on your level of tolerance for these things. When the lock does work correctly though, it's very convenient. Quick and easy to operate.

The app you must download to fully operate the lock is a bit clunky. I also am deducting a star because the app forces you to share your phone number when you sign up - I assume I'll be getting spam calls any day now. Unless there's a clear need that truly can't be avoided, please don't demand phone numbers from your users. It's a security risk.

A few other tidbits:
-this thing is HEAVY
-the lock does not pop open when you unlock with your phone, you have to physically pull it open, which takes quite a bit of force. I thought it was stuck until I realized I just needed a harder pull
-related to the above, the lock feels very well made and sturdy

Overall the lock is very convenient. If the manufacturer were to drop the required phone number on signup in the app, and work on the UI a little, my rating would go up.

Update - I had to return this lock after a week because it, well, stopped locking. Given the glitches, privacy issues, and unreliability, I have to amend this review to 1 star.
