Compare this review to the varidesk and other users before purchasing
by T. Romo (5 out of 5 stars)
June 13, 2016

My boss just purchased this for me after she noticed I was stacking books on my desk to "raise" my computer and stand at my desk. I did a lot of research before coming across this model. I was looking at the varidesk which was twice the price of this model. I read reviews that other people had posted about this model and I am telling you that this is an amazing product for the price range. It arrived today and I was able to put it on my desk by myself (I am a 31 year old male with no previous back issues), but you may need someone to help you put it on your desk. I quickly setup everything as shown in this picture. With everything on the desk I was able to easily lift and lower the desk within 2 seconds. I personally did not experience any wobbling while raising / lowering the desk. There is a little bit of noise which is the sliding mechanism when you raise or lower it but it takes 2 seconds to raise or lower it so I doubt I will have any complaints from my fellow co workers. I know it certainly does not bother me. I was worried my full keyboard with 10-key wouldn't fit but as you can see in the picture it fit with still space on each side. I was also able to fit my gel wrist pad for both my keyboard and mousepad. I currently have one large monitor but my boss informed me she is ordering another for some new software we are getting that will require dual monitors. There is more than plenty of space for both large monitors which makes me happy that I won't have a problem when our new software comes out requiring dual monitors. I read before making this purchase that some purchasers were experiencing problems raising and lowering the desk. I have not experienced any of these issues. Maybe I was lucky or maybe they were unlucky and got a defective but I am personally extremely satisfied with this purchase and if you are reading reviews like I did before you make your purchase please let this influence your decision. It is super easy and required no strength at all to lower or raise the desk. At half the price of the varidesk this in my book was a complete win because my boss was not willing to shell out the extra money for the varidesk and I would have had to pay for the difference myself. Ain't nobody got time for that! Hope this helps and hope this positive review gets back to the manufacturer as they did a great job in my eyes. Now I will say that I am 5'6 and this is perfect height for me fully raised. If you are 6'2 or taller, I could potentially see where this may not be tall enough for you. That would be my only warning. But if you are under that height this should be good enough for the price. If you are wondering no I was not paid and no I did not get a discount for this review. This is a real Amazon customer just sharing their feedback to hopefully help other potential buyers who are on the fence between this model and more expensive models such as the varidesk.
**update**6/30/2016 - so I have now had this standing desk for two full weeks and still love it. Everyone at my work now stops by to ask where I got it and how much it was. They are all jealous and want one too!
=)

I will say that I work at an office where they have concrete floor with an extremely thin layer of carpet on top. Standing all day was fatiguing my legs so I did some research and got the Topo standing desk mat. Now I am able to stand all day long without my legs hurting one bit by the end of the day and I walk at lunch at a track across the street from my job. All I am trying to add is that if you are going to invest in a standing desk make sure you have a nice standing anti-fatigue mat to help you get through the day unless you want to be going up and down. This is no way a slam on the Halter standing desk as they have no control over the type of floor at my office. They made an amazing product but due to my work environment I did need to add an anti-fatigue mat. Now I feel I have the ultimate work set up.

Also, when I first got the halter standing desk I only had one large monitor as you can see in the first two pictures. I have since been upgraded by my manager to dual monitors for some new software we are about to start using. Both monitors fit on the standing desk like a champ. When I go to lower and raise the desk (now that I have my topo mat it stays up) the monitors stay on top and do not fall over.

Wrapping this review up as I am now rambling, this is an awesome product for half the price of most standing desks. If you are serious then you should definitely give this product a try.
**** 3 Month update Review *****

It is now September 15, 2016 and I have officially had this product for 3 full months now. I can honestly say I still love it just as much as the day I got it. Also with the Topo mat, I am still able to stand all day, every day. To be honest I only lower my desk now when co-workers stop by to ask me about my desk. I am now known as the guy with the cool desk setup. I have converted a few other co-workers and they are now on board with this product and just as satisfied. The only thing I will say is that as I looked this product up now, I see that there are two other versions of this same product just different color versions. One in white and one in all black. I definitely would have gone for one of those since they are all 3 the same price. However, the color of the desk clearly does not affect the performance of the desk and is only a preference. I am still completely satisfied with this product.

Desk looks good, but some stability/quality improvements could be made
by Grandmazonian (3 out of 5 stars)
March 8, 2016

This is my first standing desk, so i dont know if these problems are common with other models, but there are a few things that bother me. The desk lifts by squeezing two handles on either end, which releases teeth that interlock with the support beams for the unit. The handles are easy to release, but when i lift the stand, the feet come up with it. I end up lifting the entire unit. It settles back down and i can set the height to what i want though, so i think that if I either tie down the base plate to the desk, it may work better. In short, the raising of the desk is clunky. I was just expecting it to be smoother.

This is only moderately annoying as i only change from sitting to stand once or twice a day. What is much more irritating is what i'm experiencing right now as i type. There is a lot of vibration in the stand, and while i type the monitors wobble. I feel that this is causing me some eyestrain and even if it sounds like a minor complaint, it is constant throughout my working day and is like Chinese water torture. I can't think of a way that i can reinforce the stand so that this doesn't happen anymore, so it's something i'm going to have to get used to.

The final comment is that there appears to be a manufacturers defect in the finish. This is not damage caused by shipping. it looks like the wood veneer was cut a little short, or perhaps melted when affixing it to the desk (see picture). This is purely aesthetic and doesn't particularly bother me, but for a brand new purchase of $300+ it's a little disappointing; kind of like driving a new car off the lot and noticing a scratch when you get home.

All in all - the desk is ok. I'm not unhappy with my purchase, but i was expecting more.

Great quality stand desk at a bargain price!
by Jackson Dean Chase (5 out of 5 stars)
February 21, 2017

I researched a lot of stand desk options and settled on this 36" one. It had great reviews and was half the price of similar "name brand" options like Varidesk.

PROS: The Halter ED-258 came pre-assembled and was ready to go right out of the box. It's heavy, but can be moved (carefully) by one person.

The raise/lower levers are conveniently located on the sides. It's super-easy to operate.

Construction is sturdy, and although you shouldn't put your full weight on it, I've found at 180 pounds I'm able to comfortably lean one arm on it with only a slight dip to the wing (it's wide enough to work as an arm rest when standing).

Top tier easily supports my 10+ pound iMac and misc. stuff. There's a fair bit of extra storage thanks to the "wings" on the upper and lower tiers: easily stores your coffee mug, smart phone, external hard drives, misc. office contraptions, notes, pens, paperbacks, etc.

The fake cherry "wood" finish is rich and lovely but scratches fairly easily, such as if you clamp a boom scissor arm on it for podcasting, you can expect to leave a mark.

Most importantly, there is NO noticeable shaking when typing even when I aggressively bang away at the keyboard and even when it's raised to its max height!

The raised desk's max height is perfect for me at 5'9" with room for an anti-fatigue mat under me.

The belly cut-out is generous to accommodate a wide range of user body types.

CONS: As I said, I have an iMac, so I have a Mac-sized wireless keyboard that is smaller than a standard full-size PC keyboard. Between my Mac keyboard and a small 7" x 9" mouse pad, I have maybe two inches to spare. I would have liked another couple of inches so I could use a larger mouse pad.

One thing I noticed in other reviews that's true is that you need to be careful raising and lowering the desk to avoid getting your cables and cords getting caught between the tiers and pinched/crushed. A simple zip-tie to bundle your cords together could solve that, though you should still keep an eye on the cord bundle before lowering the desk just to be safe.

One last bit of caution to those with small children or pets. They may try to sneak under the desk (especially in its raised position) and this presents a danger to them should the desk hydraulics fail or you don't realize they are under there... that's a flaw common to all stand desks, however, and not just with this one. As with the cords, I advise you always check under your desk before operating it. Also, if you plan to be away from the desk with no way to keep children or pets away from it, you should lower it just to be safe.

SUMMARY: Overall, this desk is an awesome value! It's made in China at half the price of a Varidesk with no appreciable drop in quality. Engineering is great. As you've read, my criticisms are extremely minor and unavoidably common to any model stand desk. I'm an author and expect to get a lot of use out of this little beauty. I'm super-happy with this purchase!

UPDATE: One year later, and this stand desk works every bit as good as the day I bought it. Quality manufacturing!

UPDATE (December 21, 2018): It's been almost two years of near-daily use and the desk hydraulics still operate flawlessly.

Scratched, 29" deep (NOT 24") and I love it.
by K.Stacey (4 out of 5 stars)
June 22, 2017

Pros: Sturdy, decent looking and lifts easily. (I have no idea how anybody has problems with this) The layout is well thought out. A coworker bought one a couple years ago and it's blah gray, flat, needed monitor mounts or they were the same level as the keyboard and cost twice as much.

Cons- like many others, the product I received was damaged, a scratch near the middle/back, where the veneer is bubbling slightly. Nobody (including myself) sees the back of my desk, so it's no worth the hassle of sending back. Annoying though.

I REALLY had a difficult time determining the dimensions of this. 36" wide, ok, got it. Depth? I read everything from 20-30". Several people insisted on 23-24"? Ok, but if you are looking and have a VERY tight squeeze into an absurdly small office space like I do? The fact that it is actually 29" deep, beyond a shadow of a doubt may help you. The other measurements are just the top tier or just to the dip in the keyboard tray or just the metal base. The unit will actually take up 36x29", for real. Looking at it there is no reason I shouldn't be able to unscrew the keyboard tray and move it back an inch or so. Will update if that is successful.

Very nice product

February 22, 2017

I have never tried a Varidesk, but couldn't bring myself to shell out $400 for one. At about $250 this one tipped me over the edge and so I ordered one. I really like it. I probably still spend a majority of my day sitting, but it's nice to be able to stand as well. I like my monitor elevated anyway when I'm sitting down and this one does that nicely. I don't miss the space it takes up on my desk as it has ample space to set things on it such as pen holder, calculator, etc. Highly recommended.

Sturdy Desk - Great Value
by Kalgan (4 out of 5 stars)
July 18, 2017

Bought Halter ED-258 desk as I had been having neck/shoulder issues. This is my first standing desk. It is sturdy and nicely fits two monitors, but...

is VERY VERY hard to raise and lower. If you are not careful you can end up hurting your back. The two 300 N hydaulic dampers which is supposed to make the raising and lowering smooth is probably under capacity and that might be the problem with this model. Trying to contact the manufacturer to see whether they will be able to do anything about it.

Update:

Since I wrote the above review I was contacted by Customer Service who offered to send me a replacement. The replacement arrived within a week. It had better pair of dampers which seems raising and lowering much smoother. Thanks to Great Customer Service!

Quality Product, Heavy but larger than most. Hold more stuff. Is actually a desk. Sciatic is way bet
by Caltommy (5 out of 5 stars)
January 7, 2017

Much bigger than other models for a better price. Solid foundation. I'm not getting much monitor movement and I have two of them on the desk. The bottom keyboard tray holds two full size keyboards so I can fully multitask. I'm 6'1 and it is a great height when fully up. It is also comfortable down before the first cup of coffee kicks in the morning. It is heavy to lift up. With two monitors and keyboards it is a lift. The shocks really help but my 5'5" wife would have to take off the monitors first. Not real bad as they stay connected just a bit of a delay. The "wood" looks great on my Basset solid wood desk. I put a large piece of black foam board under it to keep from any mars. Looks cool with the black supports not standing out so much. More important, after 12 days of use my sciatic nerve is much better. I was really hurting sitting all day. Not now. I did put a Costco anti fatigue mat down when I am just wearing socks. Good tennis shoes or my Merrell boots is no problem. Would recommend and buy again.

Was happy at first, but the cheap materials used resulted in my desk breaking and it is now useless
by Design Inc. (1 out of 5 stars)
July 27, 2018

At first I was impressed by the size and relative stability. But then today, after barely any use, I noticed that it sheared a bolt right off at the middle of the X on the left side. This is the bolt that holds the metal bars together as it goes up and down. I am within the weight limit of the desk so there's no excuse as to why this broke. The right side bolt is also loose and I assume it also "sheared" off... Which means the entire weight of the desk now is being put on the hydraulic system - which could cause it to randomly fail and drop my monitors etc....

Cheaply made with thin metals and cheap bolts - how much more would it have cost to use bolts that weren't so brittle/cheap that they just break off with no force...

Regret buying this because now I am stuck with a desk that doesn't function and I can't return it because I didn't start using it right after I bought it.

It didn't even make it through 1 month of occasional light use. I probably raised/lowered it 30 times before it broke.

The size and design are great. But the gas shocks are much to weak ...
by mag (1 out of 5 stars)
November 19, 2017

The size and design are great. But the gas shocks are much to weak to lift the desk. All I have on it is two 22" monitors, keyboard and mouse. I plan to return it because lifting the desk puts a great strain on my back and abdomen. If the gas shocks actually would lift the desk to the standing position I would give it a 5 star rating.
