Sturdy Two-Gear Hand Drill -- Deserves A Look
by Amazon Customer 2000 (4 out of 5 stars)

Yeah, I know we'd all like our tools to be made in the good ol' USA, but unless you're shopping for used hand tools on eBay, you're not likely to find many of that old school quality.

That being said, the WEICHUAN (also sold as Mytec) is a fairly sturdy drill made in China. I'm guessing that it has so few reviews because of it's higher price. Yes, the handles are plastic, but you can open the top to store drill bits and it has two gears/pinions for a very solid feel. Mine came with a separate 1/4" chuck (mislabeled 3/8") and it tightens with a key, instead of by hand. The box shows they make a 3/8" chuck too, so I suppose you could swap out different size chucks if the need arose--which is handy. IMPORTANT >> There were no instructions included, so pay close attention to the Amazon photo about how to attach the chuck! (See the attached photos for reference)

I've used it to do some light drilling jobs with wood and so far, so good. 4 stars because of the plastic handles & so-so orange paint.

OK, But Not Like the Old American-Made Ones

WEICHUAN Hand Drill 3/8-Inch Capacity-Powerful and Speedy, Manual 3/8 inch Mini Hand Drill with Finely Cast Steel Double Pinions Design, 3 Jaw Chucks and Grip Handle

It is OK. I lost my old mechanical drill (along with our family home) in Hurricane Katrina. It was a drill that my father gave me that was probably from the 1950's. The old drill seemed much more substantial and had a second handle that was perpendicular to the to the main shaft of the drill that was useful for adding extra weight pressure while drilling. The old drill was much better drilling holes and felt much more stable. It was easy to drill large holes without bogging down like this new one does.

Some advice if you buy one, save a few bucks and buy the 1/4 inch capacity version because this drill does not work well with the larger bits, but does work OK with small diameter bits.

It is not a bad thing to have around for drilling small, narrow holes, but frankly that is about it.

One thing nice is the hollow handle that give you a place to conveniently store a few bits.

BTW, assembly is easy, but my drill came with no instructions. Remember, instructions are shown on the Amazon website, although likely written by someone in China who spoke little English.

I'm keeping mine rather than returning it, so that says something.

This is not a powerful manual drill.

The mechanical quality of this tool is unacceptable. When using a 3/8 bit drilling into southern pine, the gear mechanism bound up after the third revolution. Changing to a 1/8 drill bit, it still bound up after the 5th revolution. If you are a novice woodworker and purchase this tool you will feel that it is your fault because of your lack of experience. If you are an experienced woodworker you see right away that you made a poor decision in purchasing this drill bit.

Constantly binds up even with 1/8" bit

I bought this for cub scout projects, when I tested it out I found it extremely difficult to get an 1/8" whole through a 3/4" plank of pine wood. At the bottom of every revolution it got bound up and would not turn, I had to back it off and turn again eventually getting a whole through. I determined this is not a functional tool to drill wholes especially for 8 to 10 year olds, I'm looking into a hand brace, I think that will be more effective drill. This eggbeater drill has a sloppy drive gear with way to much play, at our scout build event one of the cub scouts brought an antique eggbeater drill and it worked much better than this new one.

Great product!

Great product. This is the only model I could find with double pinion gears (less chance of binding or stripping) and a chuck that uses a key which allows you to really tighten down the bit so it won't slip like I see with so many complaints about keyless chuck models. Of course you can still hand tighten the chuck without using the key if you prefer. I like the hollow handle which allows you to store bits. My only wish is that there was a small clip on the flat side of the gear housing where you could attach the key for safe keeping. I was able to drill through a 2 x 4 and a soup can with a 1/8 inch bit with relative ease. Given the chuck tightens real good with the key there's no issue with reversing the drill to unbind the bit if it sticks. Tolerances on the shaft seem tight and smooth and the tolerances on the gears were tight enough without causing binding.

Great for small projects

Better than expected hand drill. The keyed chuck makes it even better. You can tighten up a bit enough to not have any slippage while drilling a hole. The only problem I had was the red hand crank/gear was not tight as it should be to prevent some wobble. This was easily fixed. I don't know why some people had problems putting the chuck on as I thought it was very straight forward and easy.

Too many issues. Regret the purchase.

Gears bind in about the same spot and doesn't spin true. Wobbles quite a bit.

Was purchased for a 7 year old but not usable as is. Too many issues.

Was also a pain to get the chuck mounted.

Should have spent the same money on vintage.

A nice copy of the old style hand drills
by Amazon Customer (4 out of 5 stars)

I have an old hand drill from my grandfather. This is a good backup. My grandfather's is still working after almost 100 years. I'm pretty sure this one won't last as long. But it does seem sturdy enough for woodworking or soft metal drilling.

The chuck seems solid and well designed. It's better than I expected for the price.

Overall quality

For the price this is a decent product. It feels substantial in your hand and the mechanism feels solid. What keeps it from 5 stars is there is a defect in the main gear that causes a bit of a bind once a revolution of the main gear. I can't see anything obvious which makes me think there is a slight flaw in the casting. Not enough to affect operation, just a bit annoying.

Works pretty well for small diameter bits. Binds slightly during use when pressure is applied, but if used carefully, does the job I intended it for.
