Marketed by Joe Pedott and produced by San Francisco, California-based company Joseph Enterprises, the first Chia Pet, Chia Guy was created on September 8, 1977. A trademark registration was filed on Monday, October 17, 1977. Pedott first learned about Chia Pets when he attended a housewares show in Chicago in 1977. Chia Pets achieved popularity in the 1980s following the 1982 release of a ram, the first widely marketed Chia Pet.

I planted the seeds on this thing and left it on the kitchen counter. The next morning I came downstairs and there was a small six inch wall built around him.

Folks, I don't know what to tell ya. This Chia Pet is just fantastic. Easy to maintain and the growth - there's no problem there, folks believe me. They have some wonderful people over there at Chia. Together they have have Made Chia Pets Great Again. You're gonna be so proud.

Cool product but if you want the chia seed "Jam" to actually stick to the product - mix it 2t seeds + 1/8 cup water - not 1/4 cup like instructions say... remember you read that when you're watching the stuff slide off of your pet....

The porosity of the "clay" used allows ALL the water to seep out through the entire chia pet. The "tray" provided does not hold the amount of water released and makes a god-awful mess! I owned an original chia pet years ago that was properly made without the leaking and this product is not suitable unless you place it in a huge water-collecting container.

I got three of these. None of them can hold water. I'm going to try a gnome next. I will say that customerservice is VERY helpful and friendly.

This product requires a GREAT deal of attention to make it look partially like the picture. I gave it attention every day and the top still never really grew out like the rest of the product.
