Lots of fun; Big mess

So my kids loved these but whatever you do, do not buy these to go on a road trip. My car was covered in blue flecks. When I tried to vacuum my car, it took an hour and I am still seeing them. They also stuck to my leather seats and even though I got most of it off, i can still see the residue.

Great Gift, or FOR TRAVEL

This was a HUGE HIT with my 5YO daughter on a recent trip, and even the 11YO cousins wanted to try it out. She was able to use this in the car, the airplane, and the hotel room and every design gave us 10-15 minutes of quiet :) It's small enough to fit in a purse. It does cause little "flakes" to fall everywhere when you scratch off the surface to reveal the design but this isn't a deal breaker for me. I plan to have one of these available for every long trip.

My kids and myself all love the scratch art. I just wish on the "favorite things" and the "safari animals" that the pictures covered the entire page. There is a LOT of wasted space.

You'll find a lot of negative comments about the mess- umm, DUH. Melissa and Doug isn't the only brand to make scratch art- they ALL make messes! You're scratching off some sort of covering to reveal a picture or colors underneath. That means there's a mess. But it vacuums up. The goldfish crumbs and french fries all over the floor on a roadtrip need to be vacuumed up, anyway, so you're just adding some fun to it. :)

I gave this 5 stars even though I did have one concern with it. I was looking for fun items for my grandchildren to use when they came to visit me in Florida. (I flew round trip to KY three times during July to bring one down to Florida, take him/her back home and bring the next one down). My five-year-old grandson loved this scratch art. At first his hand would get very tired, but I showed him he did not have to scratch the pictures so hard. He brought these with him during a doctor's appointment I had and it definitely kept him busy. The only negative is the product covering the blank pictures made a bit of a mess on the floor and his lap. But I suppose that is only natural since you are scrapping the product off the page.

I bought these for a car trip, and my kids (ages 10, 8, 5) LOVED them. Kept them all 3 busy for several hours. The downside is they produce a colored residue - the scratched off stuff - which made a mess in the car. The mess vacuumed up easily, so that was well worth the hours of entertainment in the car, but I wouldn't want them around the house all the time.

We went on an 8-hour car trip and this was one of the things to keep him busy. My 5yo seeks sensory stimulation (pressure) and he loves scratching! It really helped him to relieve some frustration during the long trip, I think. One downside is that it made a mess of his carseat, but with some careful maneuvering I scooped him up and got the bulk of the scratched off granules on the ground outside the car. A quick vacuum after the trip and no harm was done (no staining or sticking to the upholstery and his clothes).

Kept my 4 year old grandson busy for hours. He was so proud when he was able to see what he uncovered and he could do it so easily! The only draw back is that it is a bit messy due to the substance being scratched off. So, just make sure to have the child do it on a mat, tray, or paper that can easily collect the "scratch-off".

This is so fun! The satisfaction of scratching and the excitement of discovering what is hiding underneath makes for lots of fun for my 4 year old. I think this product is great for a large variety of ages too...4-11 maybe.

Kept my little one busy for a long time. She sometimes sits in the counter and does it while I'm cooking or doing dishes. Also a great car or travel activity.

From the ages of 3 to 4, my daughter has loved these. They keep her occupied for SUCH a long time. The only CONS are that the scrapings make a mess (you'll need to vacuum afterwards) and they smell like dish detergent -- not a bad smell, but ideally they wouldn't smell at all. I do recommend these for preschool age children and older.

Perfect for road trips!

My kids LOVE these scratchers. I buy them for road trips because it is like coloring without all the pieces (just one wooden stylus vs a lot of crayons/markets). The stylus stays stored in a little compartment when not in use. One thing to note-it does generate a small amount of mess as the top layer is scratched off but it's easy to vacuum.
