Great product but can't see the Purple letters...
by Amazon Customer (4 out of 5 stars)
February 10, 2018

Let me start by saying I want to give it 3.5 stars. It's better than just "okay" but it's got plenty of room to improve. Overall, I'd buy it again!

Pros: Very cute. Well made. Acorns are easy to open and close. The box will make it easy for storage as long as I don't let my toddler get rough with it as kids often do. The object pieces are very cute for the most part, I like their texture and it arrived quickly and in good condition as expected, with nothing missing.

Cons: 1.The purple letters are almost invisible on the brown plastic. Like seriously hard to see. I have 3 windows in my living room and use the natural light during the day with no issues. It's not the brightest lighting but I never struggle to see, as I did with those purple letters. The purple is so similar to the brown which sounds odd but they just blend into each other. Unless the acorns are tilted up toward the light. If sitting vertically on their base, I found it hard to find the purple letters on the acorns. I don't recall seeing any mention of this issue in the reviews I read prior to purchase but it's a legit/annoying issue and something the manufacturer should improve at some point. 2. I wish the W and the M weren't both the same color. One of the games brilliant features is the acorn tops/colors are clues to que little ones to help narrow down the match possibilities with subject pieces. Example: The orange Queen piece is a little ambiguous and could also be a King-however, the K acorn has a purple top, meaning it corresponds with a purple figurine, while the Q is orange! So it's obviously a Queen. Brilliant!) So... the letters W and M are confusing to my toddler. (As are N and Z. An easy mistake in both cases as they are so similar in shape, it's simply a matter of the direction they're in.) So when trying to find the acorn that corresponds to the GREEN Whale, seeing both a green M and a green W acorn is a little confusing when finding a home for the whale. Makes sense, right? If we had a red M and a Green W there'd be less room for confusion (and it's another opportunity for her to see that though they're sort of similar, M and W are two distinctly different letters and not interchangeable as they appear in this game.) 3. (This is less of an issue and more a wish list:) I agree with other reviewers, there are a couple odd choices in some of the object pieces as stated in previous reviews. Example: Koala bear for K. I agree "Kite" would be easier to distinguish as Koalas aren't that commonly seen and this solid colored, tiny figurine, sorta looks like a mouse. Speaking of mouse...I'd suggest that over the current mitten for the letter M. The sail boat for the letter B? Eh...I guess? I'd personally go with a little Bear. Maybe a lion for L instead of a leaf which I initially stared at dumbfounded thinking it was a spade (as in playing cards, lol), hubby also couldn't guess it until I told him. In all fairness when you get the unopened kit, the pieces are grouped together in plastic bags, not with their corresponding acorns so it's a guessing game that very first time you organize it.) There are a few others that are hard to figure out or wouldn't be your first association but over-all it's functional and is collectively very cute. Final note: The smell people commented on. Yes it's there. It's like a subtle, slightly skunky smell, which I dont think is that bad. Cat pee is much worse which someone mentioned. I don't get that from this particular package. And it wasn't so offensively strong that we couldn't enjoy the game. In fact my husband didn't even notice at all. I was probably aware bc I specifically sniffed for it after reading reviewers' warnings.

Anyway...hope this helps the manufacturer for potential improvements someday. It really is very cute and I want to give it 5 stars but it's not quite there...

Fun and Interactive Alphabet Activity
by kcurls (4 out of 5 stars)
September 14, 2017

I ordered this for my 2 year old son, knowing it is something he can grow into. He has a language/speech delay so any fun activity we can participate in that gets him talking is a plus. There are 26 acorns- one for each letter of the alphabet. The capital letter is written on the outside of the acorn, the lowercase letter written underneath the lid, and a surprise item that begins with that letter is hidden inside the acorn. The item inside matches the color the stamped letter on the outside and the lid, making it a little easier for matching.

We are able to do so many activities with this one set. Saying letters, practicing sounds, vocabulary building, counting, sorting, colors...we play with this set nearly every day.

My one concern is the size of the items inside- many are very small and easily a choking hazard. Another is the ability to identify what the shapes are inside. There isn't much detail on the shapes and some are quite hard to distinguish what they actually are.

Flawed

I am a teacher and purchase this item to use with my grandson. I am disappointed that Learning Resources, a company from which I purchased many items for my classroom, has their name on such an inferior product. There are some positives: the basic concept is good (if not quite delivered) and it is great that the capital letters on the outside of the acorn can be matched with a lower case letter on the inside. Most of the letter-sound representations are good. Negatives: some of the representations are really off and this is a major flaw with young learners. The purple color on the brown acorn does NOT work. The tops on half of these acorns do NOT neatly snap closed. This is a major problem if, like me, you like to keep your things organized and wish to minimize loss of essential items in a learning resource. The acorns with unsecure tops will surely lead to them ending up missing. It will be interesting to see if the company actually follows their line on Amazon and will have the courtesy to contact me. In the meantime, this product has left me disappointed to the extent that I will not purchase additional Learning Resource products for my grandchildren OR my classroom. This was a real letdown.

Keeps your child busy, great quality
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

These are amazing and keep my autistic daughter super busy. She's obsessed to open them up, line the items up in alphabetical order etc. No frustration at all that they don't close right or anything. All the correct items were in the acorn - although I was a bit thrown off that the boat is a vessel for the letter V. Daughter didn't mind at all.

A - Apple

B - Bus

C - Car

D - Dinosaur

E - Elephant

F - Frog

H - Hippo

I - Icecream

J - Jar

K - Koala

L - leaf

M - Mitten

N - Nest

O - Octopus

P - Pig

Q - Queen

R - Robot

S - Star

T - Train

U - Umbrella

V - Vessel

W - Whale

X - Xylophone

Y - Yoyo

Z - Zebra

Great learning toy! So many possibilities!!! Funny odor, though!
by Momtographer (4 out of 5 stars)
January 2, 2018

These are super cute! We got them for our nearly 4 year old daughter for Christmas! At her level I like that they the objects inside the acorns are color-coordinated with the acorn lids and lettering to narrow down the choices a bit as she learns her letter sounds. The little objects are so fun and for whatever reason little children love items like that. My one and only complaint is there is an odor from the plastic. It isn't a terrible odor (kind of coffee with a hint of a weird mushroom/coffee odor...sounds bad but i don't think it's bad enough that I want to return), but noticeable enough that I felt the need to mention it. I have read enough amazon reviews to know some people get very upset about plastic odors. My review is 4 stars because of the odor. I also need to figure out how to store the toy as a set because the packaging it came in is a bit cumbersome to reproduce. This type of toy isn't one that I want played with willy-nilly with pieces strewn about the house. I actually just recalled we have one or two containers I may be able to use! Yay!

This is a great toy for learning and we will enjoy it a lot for homeschooling. A hide and seek game may be something we can use these for. Maybe just one color at a time. There are a lot of possibilities with these! Love them!

UPDATE: I still love the toy, but the weird odor won't stop.

Great product from a pediatric OT
by Helpful Reviews Only (5 out of 5 stars)

Nice for working on fine motor skills of pincer grasp and bimanual use - not too easy and not too hard to open.

I chose to write the letters on the bottom of the objects as well. Obviously it is also good for many visual and cognitive skills.

Only complaint with the object choices (yes there are many things that could have been chosen for each letter) is the V for van because it looks like a bus and all kids identify it as a bus. Otherwise the selections are logical and slightly different than some of the usual ones without being unrecognizable by the child (such as another toy that has newt and narwhals). To those who complained about the koala - it does very distinctively look like a koala. To those who feel like the shapes are not distinguished enough to identify- none of my special needs kids have had a problem.

Oh yes, it will need some airing out time for the smell.

This way- it's a fun learning game for the younger kids
by K. Huber (5 out of 5 stars)

Review time!!!!

This is called "Alphabet Acorns." They have little toys that go in to the acorns, that associate with each letter. The toys also are associated with the colors of the top of the acorns, so they learn a few colors as well. There is a capital letter on the outside of the acorn, and a lower case letter on the bottom of the lid. This way- it's a fun learning game for the younger kids, and a fun review games for older kids. They stack to make pyramids, which my kids are loving.

My kids have been loving this game. They do have small parts- the toys- which work for my kids, but can get lost easily. The lids aren't the best quality, as some of them are hard to put on. In all: great learning game! It's been fun for my kids, and they are loving having to find the match of the acorn to the toy it's associated with! This one will probably be out quite a bit, to help my youngest recognize letters, and my next one to review her letters!

Some colors make letters hard to read and they SMELL TOXIC.
by nofarm (1 out of 5 stars)
August 11, 2018

My G 9+ makes these look better than in person, but some of the letters are VERY hard to read. And, like so many others, mine SMELL VERY Toxic. I am washing them in Fabreze Oder Eliminator and may resort to Clorox. The idea is great, but not sure I can over come the smell. Will most likely return the item. Learning Resources needs to find a manufacturer willing to meet safer USA regulations for children's toys..

Happy despite slight issue
by A.Shop (4 out of 5 stars)
November 6, 2019

So I took a chance and unfortunately many of the reviews are true regarding a missing / duplicate piece. We are missing the Zebra but received an extra queen. I did call learning resources and they will not issue out an additional piece. They said to call the vendor aka amazon. I assume amazon would want me to return the acorn set and they will issue a new one (which would prob also have strong chance of having a missing piece). That is far too much of hassle for 1 piece for me though so we are just making due without it but I do find it super annoying!! On the other hand- this activity set is adorable, durable, made of strong material. I did not notice any type of smell. My daughter and I are having a really fun time with it using it everyday. I am happy with my purchase for those reasons despite the 1 missing piece but I do wish this company would figure it out since it's an ongoing issue. It can't be that hard right to send a full product or at least issue out replacement pieces. I would say def buy it but be prepared to possibly have to return depending on the piece situation.

My daughter's favorite!
by OtherMother (5 out of 5 stars)
December 20, 2017

My daughter got this for her 3rd birthday and LOVES it! She asks to play with it every day and it keeps her busy for a long time. I don't leave her unattended because the pieces are on the small side so they require some supervision. The acorns are a great size and are easy to open and close. The capital letter is in the outside and the matching lower case letter is on the inside of the acorn lid. I wish it came with a storage box or something though. We keeps it in the plastic package it came in (the box broke... Our fault) but there is nothing holding the plastic lid on. My daughter can't carry it on her own without it falling over and everything spilling out so I'm looking for a better storage option that keeps them together and in order. Besides that, they are wonderful. So happy we got them!
