easy to install
by Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)

It's small, easy to install, and seems simple to use. After having this device in the window of my pickup for only a few months, it has decided to auto-shut down every five minutes, forcing me to turn it back on. It's basically unusable as a protection device at this point. Do not recommend. -UPDATE- Garmin has all but ignored my emails about their faulty product. Unless you want to be manually turning on this thing every few feet, I would avoid. The USB-Micro attachment point on the camera isn't quite up to the task of a few weeks of vibrations.

Disregard all one-star reviews that don't mention Firmware Version 2.70
by Snapdragon (5 out of 5 stars)
June 22, 2017

I purchased this camera with the knowledge of people having overheating issues, but I also knew about the recent firmware update. Since version 2.70, there is absolutely no overheating issue with this dash cam. I live in FL where parked cars get very hot, and I haven't had any heat issues. I updated the firmware in Garmin Connect prior to installing the camera, and it has worked flawlessly ever since. The controls are easy to use, it has several helpful features, and best of all, the camera is very small so it doesn't get in the way while you're looking out of your windshield. Video quality is excellent, and wireless connection with the Garmin VIRB app works well.

Can't recommend this. Good idea, poorly executed.

POSITIVES:
-The dash cam functionality is decent, but a bit of a pain to access the saved videos.
- The collision detection, lane notifications, etc. seem to work pretty well.
- The 10MPH over speed limit notification is nice, but only works if navigation is on.

NEGATIVES

But the GPS/Navigation is easily the worst I've seen in recent years.
- Routes are poorly picked. I've gone head-to-head with Waze and Waze picks far better routes.
- Software will update randomly during a dive with no prompting. If you happen to be in the middle of a drive where you need the navigation - you are out of luck until it finishes the update.
- Will lock-up and hold directions even after driving dozens of miles. Only resolution is to unplug and start it back up.
- Tells you your arrival time when you first set it - but never gives updates. Should alternate display at bottom of miles to go and ETA.
- Let's face it - Alexa is no brain child. Between not understanding speech accurately, to not having close to the full functionality of Alexa, it's kind of a waste of time.

24.hours and a software update made all the difference.

My Speak Plus was deliverered two days ago and at first it seemed ok. I already had a Speak in my wife's car so I had experience with this device. The next day I was able to get out in the world with it and see how it worked. It was a little glitchy and temperamental. I was able to connect, navigate, and play music just fine. Get back in the car and the app couldn't find the Speak until I power cycled it. This happened several time that day. I was not real impressed at that point. I got a notification on my phone that a software update was available for the Speak itself. It was currently version 3.80 and the update was to 5.20. I confirmed it had updated and took it out cruising around today. It didn't have any issues today. I navigated to a store while streaming music, no prob. Picked up a Valentine's Day card, came back out, connected right up, told her to resume my song and it did. I went into camera view mode, WiFi connected quickly, checked the cameras aim, pushed the disconnect button on the Speak, it resumed the song and navigation. Is it perfect?....no, but it is much better today than it was yesterday. I got my first Echo three years ago and at first it was pretty lame. So much has changed in that time. It has taken a while for the Echo to develop.....I'm sure the Speak will get better too!

UPDATE: 2/14/18

Someone said that theirs came with 4Gb Micro Sd card, both of mine came with 8Gb cards. I might upgrade, but i haven't decided yet. You only really need it to record an "incident" and some buffer room to get by. I took it out today on the interstate today, and it did what they claimed it would do. It warned me that the car that merged in front of me was too close. There is construction going on. so the lines and lanes shift in a few places in odd ways. This caused the lane departure warnings to kick in. It works, but it may not be super sensitive or it might be right on and not bug you when you change lanes on purpose. I was 2nd at a light near my home when the light changed. 1st car went and wasn't too far away, the "GO" feature kicked in. Rockin" out to Music Unlimited, navigating to and fro, and getting real-time "crazy driver" alerts, What more could a boy want ?! I'm at 4.5 stars now. If they tweak it in the right direction. I'll give it 5 in the future. There also was an update to the Speak software today. Now it is V. 5.30 !

INSTALL TIP:

My phone was paired with my car long before I bought a Speak and I figured out its easier to set it up without the car. It was like the car would grab the Bluetooth from the phone and the Speak wouldn't connect to set it up. I used a power adapter and a usb cord and powered it up in the house. The speak and the phone hooked right up. Just answer the questions and if your phone makes the sounds, your good to go. If you leave it plugged in and leave the phone connected, it will do the updating in 30 minutes or less. You can check the firmware version by holding both buttons until the display changes, let go and it will scroll the info screens. Push the bottom button to return to normal.

UPDATE: 2/25/18

My wife and Alexa have been "carpooling" for over a week now and they haven't had any "fights". I ask her everyday if she's had any issues and so far she is happy. After her first trip with the Speak, the first comment she made about Alexa, was that she was kinda a backseat driver. The lane keeping assist and collision avoidance systems were working. I also discovered that the "GO" feature works at the drive-thru. I pulled the memory card and reviewed some of the video. It looked good and it picks up voices in the car very well. The 8Gb card held about 90 minutes of video. I upgraded the card to a 64Gb to give me close to 12 hours of video. There has been another Speak update, it's at v5.40 and there has also been an app update as well. Overall, we are both happy with the Speak Plus and enjoy the infotainment it brings to our cars. 4.75 Stars

Buyer beware of operating conditions.
by Trick2L (3 out of 5 stars)

Received this device 08/20/2017 The unit operated correctly up until 08/24/2017 When it was stowed in my VW Jetta Sport Wagon center console all day at work in a white car with a reflective sunshade in the windshield and 85deg outside temperature. Upon leaving work and attaching the device only a portion of the display screen functioned correctly. I called Garmin and was told the device has environmental operating conditions that are unrealistic for an automobile. I was given a stowage temp range of 30deg F to 77deg F and a operational temp range of 30deg F to 130deg F. I asked what good was the park mode accessory cable and was told for areas in that temperature range. I really wanted to use this product however after only 4 days and already dealing with problems I think I will look at other brands . East Coast Chesapeake bay region

It works well enough !
by Vivian Z. (4 out of 5 stars)

I expected it not to work... But after installing it, I am impressed that it works this well.

Granted I am more technically inclined, so that helped. I don't think the product is for the total non technical person. You must at least have some idea of Bluetooth links and WiFi etc. See the video I am attaching for some thoughts.

Pros:
- The driver alerts work very well for me.
- Alexa integration, great.

Cons:
- No texting or initiating a call.

PS: Have something like Android Auto running to give you access to Bluetooth.

Feature-Packed Powerhouse
by K9Jeeper (5 out of 5 stars)
December 23, 2017

After having purchased two "cheapo" imported dashcams, I decided it was time to buy something more substantial since I rely on it every day. The first thing I noticed was how tiny the thing is. It mounts to the glass by way of a small adhesive magnet. The power cord is also magnetic and not the typical micro USB. Though other mounting configurations can be had.

A word about the memory card: DO NOT skimp on quality. In fact, I learned that some cards are not good enough. I purchased a Transcend 32GB High Endurance card. Basic low-end cards will fail.

The resolution upon playback is highly detailed and it sees well at night. The features that sets this Garmin apart from the "imported" cams are unique. It uses voice commands - after saying "Okay Garmin" it allows the user to take a picture, save a video, etc. When sitting at a light or in traffic, once the traffic starts moving, it signals me to look forward - which really comes in handy at times when I'm distracted by my dog or my phone. If I veer from my lane, another warning sounds. But the warning that I disabled is the collision avoidance. I found it annoying - especially in 'stop and go' traffic.

After setting the date and time, I can also choose whether (or not) to have the speed stamped on the video. I'm not a cop, so I chose to turn the speed off. I find the quality of the sound to be quite good as well. There are four (recording) video resolutions to choose from as well. I find the menu navigation to be intuitive and compared to other dash cams, it's fairly easy.

Since I have a Garmin GPS that has lifetime alerts, the red light camera alerts also show up on the dashcam. This is convenient if my GPS happens to be off.

A minor gripe is that the lens has a copper-colored ring around it which negates any chance for stealth factor. If it was all black, it would be a bit harder to notice through the windshield. I learned that there is no option for any kind of add-on ND filter.

The computer interface is hit & miss I'm afraid. Once I downloaded the app and linked my dashcam to my laptop, navigation was simple BUT it doesn't save the files in 1, 2 or 3 minute chunks. Let's say you park and leave the cam on. When you view the footage, it could be two and a half hours or more and you'll have to do some creative editing. They should allow us to save footage in 1-3 minute increments to make things easier. So from the time you start recording until you turn the cam off, it will force you to download huge time-consuming files. This needs to be addressed in the software on the computer side.

A nice feature (for older vehicles) is the ability to purchase a wireless rear camera for backing up. It takes a bit to set it up and adjust the lane markers, but once it's set, it makes it easier to park and avoid hitting things or people. I just didn't want to run a wire all the way from the back of my SUV. The image can get slightly grainy, but it sure beats hitting another vehicle or stationary object.

If you'd like to record footage while your car is parked, buy a "Power Magic Pro." It will ensure you do not drain your battery.

While this dashcam is more expensive than most, the features and conveniences make it worth the price of admission. I feel secure in the fact that it's backed by an American company with American tech support. Oh and I also purchased a "Square Trade" extended warranty to really be sure.

Overheating: From what I have read, this unit had a problem working in warmer climates. I also read that a firmware upgrade solved the issue.

Worked fine for 2 months

Worked fine for 2 months. Just looked up a few days ago and it wasn't on. It is a brick now. No response, will not reset. It is completely dead. I assume it's the same overheating issue as has been stated before, or other hardware issue. Trying to get a replacement now. Do not recommend at all considering all the other people with similar issues. I will say the size and mounting solution is awesome. Just wished the camera was dependable, which of course is the most important thing in a dash cam!!

Even after firmware upgrade device turns off frequently during the day time.
by Igor (2 out of 5 stars)

Unfortunately have to return it. Although like this device functions. Not bad video quality, line change alert, close distance alert, voice control - all those helps at the long term drive. But! Even after firmware upgrade device turns off frequently during the day time. Sometimes two-three times at one minute. Outside temp was about 89-92F, inside working ice cold AC. Grab it with me for TX-FL-TX trip. Missed upfront car wreck because device lost power at this moment. Very annoying manually turn it on after every power loss. Probably device usable in Alaska and Siberia, but not recommended for most South US states.

Camera firmware update to 4.10 is BAD, do not allow the update
by DS (1 out of 5 stars)
February 26, 2019

Ordered this camera Nov 28, 2018. Purchased a 64G Sandisk Extreme SD card at the same time. Worked great until a firmware update to the camera in late Feb 2019. Camera reports the memory card is degrading, will only record in 30 second files, with a constant memory card warning. I performed a full write/read test on this card with no errors. Contacted Garmin support, they claim the cards degrade after use and must be replaced. But I get the same error with all SD cards, including the card that came with the unit that has less than 1 hr of use. I tried to explain to the support person that replacing cards after 1 hour of use makes for a totally useless camera. Support suggested reformating the card in the camera but this has made no difference. Everything worked fine before a firmware update that states it was to identify card errors so clearly it has been caused by this latest update. The camera now has firmware version 4.10 and it does not work well. DO NOT ALLOW AN UPDATE TO FIRMWARE VERSION 4.10
