Tenergy Syma X5UW Quadcopter Drone with HD 720P Cameraby Chu (5 out of 5 stars)

This is a good light-weight drone which comes with 720P HD camera (optional installation). The camera module can be removed to save battery. It comes with spare propellers and propeller guards as well.
This drone can be controlled with 2 methods - 1. the included remote controller and 2. smartphone app - "Syma Go", which is available on both iOS and Android. I like that it comes with 2 batteries so I can get 2X fly time with it. It takes about 80 mins to charge one battery with the included USB charger and the fly time is about 7 minutes. One key take off/ land and 3D flip are available on the remote controller.
The drone flies pretty well and easy to control as long as the wind is not too strong. The recording from camera can be saved to either memory card (720P, not included) or onto smartphone (480P). There are some unique features available in the smartphone app only such as gesture fly - I can draw a path on my smartphone screen and the drone will try to fly along the path and gravity control - I can tilt my smartphone to control the drone instead of using the on-screen joy sticks.
Easy to fly and really stable

This Drone was my 3rd attempt at owning one and like the saying goes, "3rd time is the charm"! I couldn't be happier. From right out of the box I was easily able to assemble, charge, install app, and FLY. It seems easy, but as I stated this was my 3rd time trying different Drones. The Tenergy Syma worked just as it stated, and did even better than I was expecting.
Ok, aside from the excitement about finally getting to fly, let me tell you about my experience with this Drone. First off, once you do start flying the system is very stable and extremely responsive. It has some great features, it's a lot like playing a real life video game. However, I bought it with the purpose of mapping property I own in the mountains. Lots and Lots of trees, but she is still flying like a champ. The videos and photos have allowed me to plan installations as well as find some hidden treasures on the property we had never noticed before. I would highly recommend this Drone, especially if you're a beginner like I was!
Fun Fun Fun - Great Little Quad Copter - Tenergy Syma X5UW With WiFi FPV
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

I am having a blast with this little quad copter. The camera is pretty good for the price. Not great, but good. The control of this unit is among the easiest I've flown in this price range. It is well built. Installing and removing the batteries if fast and easy. I love how they just plug in. I get a good five minutes of flight time. The max I've had is about seven minutes. However, I didn't realize it would fall from the sky once it runs out. I'll post a video from this drone. I don't know if Amazon will degrade it or not.
Fun Fun Quad Copter! Well worth a full five stars!
Very fun!

As a flyer the X5UW felt really good. It feels responsive and zippy, and can even fight some winds (5-10mph). Having the altitude hold is also very helpful. Each battery really gets you about 7mins, so with both batteries you get 14 mins which is awesome. (I had some mini drones that would die after about 4-5 mins, and you had to plug in to charge and wait... So having the ability to have 2 batteries, that you can swap out, and that give you a good amount of fun flying time is fantastic)
And for the beginners out there, I suggest using the remote controller with the prop guards on, and do it outdoors in a wide open space! Learn the controls slowly, TAKE YOUR TIME, this will lower or eliminate you crash count as a newbie. And as you feel more comfortable flying then you can play around with all the other functions and FPV. (Just a suggestion, but if you want your toy to last as you learn it should be taken well into consideration)
The X5UW also has WiFi FPV. You download the Syma Go app and use it to connect to the drone, you then mount your phone to the controller to give you a FPV view of where you are flying. The app also allows you to record to your phone in 480p, but you can also record directly to the drone in 720p. As for the 720p quality, it is decent, albeit a little shaky, but you cant expect to much from a toy grade drone. The app also give you the option to control the drone with on screen controls, but one thing to note is that you do lose some flying range in FPV mode and/or using the on screen controls because you are using a Wifi signal. So stay in a wide open area to get the best WiFi range.
On the flip side. If you dont want to use WiFi FPV, you can still record in 720p directly to the drone's micro SD slot, and using thecontroller alone will about double the range!
Overall I am very happy with it so far. This Syma is a good option ff your looking for a beginner toy grade drone, with a camera, and wifi FPV with app control.
Excellent Beginner Quadcopter Drone

This quadcopter drone by Tenergy is awesome! It's a great drone for beginners, especially children. Here are the features that I particularly enjoyed:
-it has an auto hovering feature to allow the drone to hover in the air even if you aren't actively using the remote control so it's easy to control
-there is a button on the control that allows the drone to perform a 360 degree flip!
-one key return to bring the drone back to you
-the app is easy to use and allows you to capture beautiful pictures and videos in HD. Placing your smartphone on the included mount of the control allows you to see what your drone sees! There are also two buttons on the remote to capture pictures or videos.
Overall, I highly recommend this quadctoper drone for anyone looking into drones! 5 stars and excellent and friendly customer service.
FPV works after turning phone's mobile data off
by Radovan (4 out of 5 stars)

Easy to fly. Five stars when on sale for $40. I had to turn off mobile data on my phone (and possibly have it forget my home WiFi) to get FPV working. And it still takes a minute for the video to connect. I like the Syma FPV app better than Syma GO, which I think fights with the controller for control (user error?). Syma GO is an easy way to set trim, though.
It's a bird, it's a plane, no it's crazy drone...

This might seem like a contradiction but for the delivery, price and even how easy it was to get the drone ready for first flight, I would have to give it 5 stars BUT, the actual flying is a different story. I read the directions a few times over to make sure I hnew how to shut it down and land first before learning how to fly and flip etc. So my 1st (and last) attempt at flying went bad really bad. I turned the drone on, controller on, paired with wifi and set it on a flat wide open spot in my back yard and carefully started the rotors spinning. Then i started to move the control stick to the up position and it took off like a bat out of hell. Immediately pulled the stick down where it was supposed to stop and land. That's not how it went. As i tried to shut off the controller I watched the drone continue up and to the right. Easily clearing my garage roof and disappear toward my neighbor's house. And crash landed on his roof. Here's the kicker. After getting it off his roof I found that there was oil or some liquid on the drone and a guard missing AND one of the motors was frozen and would not turn, not even a little. Needless to say it wont be flying without one motor
I would be very cautious with Syma drones.

First time flying it, no wind, and on a football field. Got about 20 feet off the ground, lost all control of it and it just flew away. My kids and I chased it, but it flew into the woods and is now stuck about 20-25 feet up in a tree near the field. I have purchased a number of Syma products, and I think this may be my last one. I have 3 X5Cs, an X5a-1, an X5sw, and two s107 helicopters. The X5sw had 5 motors go so far, I have replaced them all, and another one died recently. Two X5Cs have had what appears to be their control board go, one still works. The X5a-1 is almost impossible to control. It will not go one way, as if the props do not change speed or something. This one, the x5uw, which went up and just flew away into a tree with no control. The helicopters worked fine though.
Budget Drone

For the price I got this at, I would recommend it!
You will have to sink some time into the controls before you try out the camera, unless you already have experience with drones. Also, the camera quality is pretty terrible, and the drones battery life is BAD. For every minute of playing with the drone, you will spend 20 minutes waiting for it to charge.
For the price, I would say this is a great beginner drone. It can survive crashes and still run fine - although major crashes are likely to ruin the product... Yeah - funny story with how I came to realize that (Which it should be common sense...)
Anyways, for the price this is a fun little drone to whir around with - but don't use this as a professional drone. The camera quality also knocks it off from even being something to record with, as the video it captures is blurry, jumpy, and not fun to watch.
The time spent charging the batteries compared to the time spent actually flying is also pretty pathetic.
Thus concludes my review - unless you would like to read my stupid story about flying this thing into its deathbed..
Because I was so eager to test this thing out, I didn't have the time to truly think about what I was doing.
The drone arrived on a nice autumn day and sometime in the afternoon. I immediately charged the batteries and took it outside. I was so young and stupid back then - I didn't take the time to think about how windy it was outside...
Anyways, I fire the thing up and take off. As a first time drone operator, I was preetttyyy terrible. I was just beginning to get a hang of it when I decided to test how high off the ground the drone could fly! The drone got pretty high, about 20-40 feet above my head I would wager... But then the controls stopped responding (the drone was out of range.) The drone itself automatically hovers, so it simply hovered there out of my range to use. I began to panic when suddenly a HUGE gust of wind stole the drone and pushed it far far away... I was using the camera at the time, so I helplessly watched the feed as the drone flew further and further away. Eventually it stopped, and through the broken video feed (now even THAT was far out of range) I could see my drone had come to lay in a tree out in the country.
I ran inside and threw on some boots, warmer clothes, and grabbed a machete. (Where I live there are NASTY stinging needles, and this time of year they are TALL!)
After 25 minutes of hacking through needles, climbing around dirt mounds, and searching for this drone, I finally stumble across what appears to be the drones last transmitted picture. After some 5 minutes of looking at the last picture, and using the landmarks within that picture to triangulate the position of the drone, I finally lay eyes on the ugly yellow color - residing in a tree some 35 feet off the ground. The drone had parked itself on top of the tallest tree around, and I had no way to get it down.
At this point I checked my phone, and I had roughly 10 minutes to get back to my house to get ready for work. Panicking, I decide to use my machete to hack down some smaller, dead trees, and use the 'sticks' to throw at the drone. After some thirty throws, I finally knock the dang thing down. I run back to my house, and make it to work in time.
The next morning comes, and I decide to try using the drone INSIDE, rather than outside in the wind. To my dismay, the drone seemed to have sustained damage to the back left rotor, and it would not fly properly. It would constantly drift in that direction. (I assume the rotor must've taken enough damage to not entirely kill it, but severely weaken it.)
Because of this, the drone had been rendered useless, and I decided to toss it in the trash.
I do not remember how much I paid for this drone, but I remember it was on sale and the price was nice enough to convince me to try it out.
And for what it is worth - I think that price was WELL worth the story I am now able to tell my friends and family.
Thanks for reading! Hope this helped :)
Save flying.
Not a bad starter drone, especially since I got it on sale
by CM Evans (4 out of 5 stars)

Context:
I haven't had a drone before and I wanted some type of starter, so if it sits in the shelf after a couple of weeks, I wouldn't feel so bad. The good news was I got it for half price on a one day amazon sale. At full price, I'm not so sure I would have been that ecstatic (it would have been OK, so get it on sale).
Pros:
Inexpensive
choice of using the remote control or phone app
camera that can record(need a micro sd card) or stream to your phone
you get two batteries (about 7 minutes flight time for each)
remote control is pretty sturdy for an inexpensive product
drone has taken a fair amount of crash abuse from a newbie like me
headless mode that might make it easier for a newbie to control it
Cons:
Not the greatest starter manual, but there of plenty of youtube user reviews to guide you.
The camera video is very 'jello' like (again see the various videos)
2 batteries, but only one charge cord, so you can only charge one at a time (the next thing I bought was a four pack of batteries with a bulk charger)
LED confirmation on the drone of when you're recording is very tough to see in daylight
The hardest thing for me (as a beginner) is wrapping your head around controlling the drone and keeping it mind that all direction controls are relative to the front of the drone and not the pilot(you) (unless you're using the headless mode, an entirely different discussion) and this would be true for any drone.
Overall I'd recommend it, and I'm already thinking of what to look for in the next model.
