Best Scale Crawler/Trail Truck Ever!by United States of Alaska (5 out of 5 stars)
August 8, 2017
I really love this scale truck! I first started crawling/trail hiking with my Tamiya Toyota Hilux 4X4 pickup back in the early 80's. Tried many after that such as the Tamiya Bruiser, etc. Gave up on that idea for a couple decades as not much fun for a lot reasons. Then I started looking at the TRX-4 specs and features. I bought two, one for me and one for my 13 year old son. I'm glad I did as this has been the best RC vehicle for this purpose that I've ever owned but only after one major mod. We ran stock out of the box at first with almost all the run time in water. However; after about three to four battery runs in water both our rigs had the brushes damaged in the motors because we run them hard. Everything else worked perfectly. I upgraded to Castle Creations Mamba X Extreme ESC with 1406-2850Kv Sensored Brushless Crawler Motor. What a huge difference in performance and reliability! With the 9 tooth pinion installed and Traxxas 2872X 5000mAh 11.1V 3S 25C LiPo, we're getting over 90 minutes of non-stop mash on the throttle as hard as you want run times in shallow and deep water (almost floating at times). The trucks have been rock solid since the mod, no breakdowns, great acceleration better than stock as well as top end speed at least as good or better. I use the ESC torque control so it accelerates without popping wheelies so easily. I could use different pinion with more teeth to easily get more top end speed but I didn't want to effect reliability and run time. Plus this is not a truck you really care to go much faster as that's what the XMaxx or similar is for. The TRX-4 will tip easy on fast corners so you learn the limits and its acceptable. With the brushless motor the cruise control doesn't work so well as that was designed for the stock set up. I'm willing to give that up for the other benefits of brushless. With all that controllable torque short jumping out of the water from a dead stop to launching off the stream banks to dry land is too cool. Be sure to tape or seal the holes in the rims if you run water or it'll take forever to dry them out.
After all these years I wanted something reliable, long run times, waterproof, controllable, good performance, great features, replacement parts easy to acquire and cool scale looks! This has it all!
Awesome Crawler/Trail Truck.

I have always been a Traxxas fan, when I saw they came out with this, a trail/crawler truck, I had to have it. I ordered it first from Tower Hobbies but after a couple months on backorder I found out they no longer are going to carry Traxxas, so I ordered it from Liquid RC, it shipped quick and showed up in about a week. I have had an Axial SCX10 and have a Vaterra Ascender, out of both of those I like this the best, the two speed transmission and lockable diffs. are awesome, the portal axles have way more ground clearance than either the SCX10 or Ascender. So far I have had no problems, ran about two batteries so far, the servo has descent power but does bind up on big rocks, speed is good, quite a bit faster than others I have had. Stock tires are really good for RTR, a lot better than the TSL Super Swampers that came on the Ascender, and as good as the Maxxis Trepadors on the SCX10, in my opinion. Torque twist is non exsistent, even when punching it in high gear from a standing start, the Ascender is terrible and the SCX10 had some. The realism on the TRX 4 is awesome, looks so much better than any of the others I have had, the inner fenders and floor pans make it so you cant see through it to the other side, the only thing you can see is the motor in the front. I put a light kit from My Trick RC in it with a little modification, and it looks awesome. Overall I love this truck, crawls as good or better than the others and looks way better also, is a little on the expensive side but you get a two speed trans. and lockable diffs. out of the box and RTR, the others you would have to buy the mods to put in them. If this is your first RC then you will need batteries and a charger but if you have had RC's before just put a battery in it and go have fun. Another nice function is the cruise control, get going as fast as you want to go, push the set button and it keeps the speed, turn the multi-function knob to go faster or slower or hit the brakes to stop, really nice for on the trail.
Traxxas always delivers

Very nice crawler built well and the portal axles are so sweet! I'll add more as I drive it more!
Took it out for the first time yesterday and had quite a bit of fun at a construction site. This thing crawls very well and the locking differentials really help you get out of a tough spot. Can't wait to go to an actual crawler course to see what it really is capable of! If you need help don't hesitate to contact traxxas support, they're very helpful!
Great truck, lockable differentials

Great truck, lockable differentials. 2 speed transmission. Decent tires, they have some stick to them for stock tires. The coil-overs are decent, no oil leaks so far. Portal axles set the weight up higher but the extra ground clearance is undeniable. The motor placement is great, it clears the suspension links at full compression. This truck has some extra weight with it's added features so if you like a lighter crawler, this may not be the one. I'm not saying don't get it in any way. This truck has some great innovation at a decent price . Articulation I feel is improved with its weight compressing the springs. Many people complain of the too heavy factory body but that's a easy fix on a minimal problem . Check it out, great crawler and it's not another jeep bodied truck ; D I added two photos to show you how this TRX-4 can really pop with a little bit of work and time : D
Great truck, but upgrade the steering servo horn
by James Nyazai (4 out of 5 stars)

First off, this is a great truck and built solid. The only reason it's not 5-star is as others have mentioned, the steering will fail, and quickly. After much research I found out in my case it was not the actual servo (mine came with the 2075X which has metal gears) but was the servo horn, which connects the servo to the steering link. Mine came with the 8247 horn, which is plastic. I replaced it with the 8247X ($9.99) and it solved the problem. I don't know why they don't just use this upgraded part, it would fix a lot of issues and negative reviews. Anyway was a simple fix. Do yourself a favor, buy this truck and also get the 8247X servo bull, and swap out the plastic one immediately.
Symptoms of failed plastic servo bull are the truck will not turn when on the ground (but you can hear the servo motor working), but turns fine in the air. Or will turn one direction, but not both. Also if you can manually turn the wheels easily without feeling the resistance of the servo motor, that means the plastic gear has stripped.
Good starting point for a crawler build.

Great starting place for a crawler build. The stock steering servo and horn are absolute garbage and should be replaced before you even get going. Mine both died within the very first battery out of the box. I would recommend the Savox 1230/Castle BEC. Adding brass weight and +10mm stub axles are a must as well for keeping this thing upright. Stock tires are pretty good. Diffs and driveline are rock solid. ESC needs cooling added. As for speed in L it goes about 2mph, and H 7mph. Not fast by any measure, but that's not what this truck is about.
With the right mods, this thing will crawl over most anything. I'm a bit deep in the pocket with mine, and it's now rock solid, and gets up most everything.
Great quality, great truck

Probably more like a 4.5 star review. This is a great little truck. Very well made 4wd with a nice looking body. Everything just speaks of well designed quality and I think its worth the money. It has plenty of power, and plenty of clearance for driving on those highly uneven trails. The controller has shift on the fly gearing for gaining more power when climbing or traversing very rugged terrain. My only complaint on the truck is that on its highest gearing it is rather slow.
You do need to purchase a battery and charger for the vehicle (ensure you buy one!) and I recommend the LIPO version that amazon had paired with the vehicle when I purchased it. It lasts a long time compared to the NIMH versions.

This is one of the coolest R/C vehicles I've owned. I haven't owned a lot. I had a 4x4 truck, a little rock crawler, and a variety of cheap ones not worth listing. This one is pretty cool, unique, and worth the price I feel. It's nicely feature packed and detailed. It's good if you don't have tons of room to let loose, or if your room is messy and the other vehicles can't make it from one side of the other.
Do yourself a treat. I had to save up for this, as the money isn't flowing like a river in a rain storm. However, even with having pinched myself to make this happen, I didn't regret it. It's an awesome no-need-for-it toy. It'll bring a smile to your face. Especially on a snowy day.
Good product except unreliable steering system

Amazing crawler! Looks so realistic! Enjoy it a lot!
Update: played no more than 10times, steering broke. Spent two weeks waiting for the steering servo because of some shipping issues. When replacing the servo, found that it was the plastic gear which was connected to the servo that was broken. I have to find out how to order that part now. This crawler is great, capable and looks fantastic, but I am disappointed by spending
much time waiting for parts. Hope traxxas can improve the reliability, especially steering system.
Update: quick response from customer service, issue resolved!
