Product Description

The LifeStraw Universal Water Filter Bottle Adapter Kit is the first bottle adapter kit with a 2-stage filter. Two different sized caps make it possible to turn almost any water bottle into a powerful water filtration system, for cycling, hiking, fitness, travel, and emergency preparedness. The kit includes a replaceable 2-stage filter, wide cap, standard cap, interchangeable standard and sport mouthpieces, leakproof lid with easy-carry loop, and kit bag. The first stage of filtration features a replaceable hollow fiber membrane microbiological filter which filters to 0.2 microns, and removes 99.999999 percent of waterborne bacteria, and 99.999 percent of waterborne protozoan parasites, from up to 1,000 gallons (4,000 liters) of water. The second stage of filtration puts water through a replaceable activated carbon capsule, which reduces organic chemical matter (pesticides, herbicides, VOCs), exceeds the NSF-42 standard for chlorine reduction, and improves taste for up to 26 gallons (100 liters) of water. All kit materials are FDA approved, and manufactured from food grade silicone. Kit components are compatible with most popular water bottle brands, including several styles of Nalgene, Hydroflask, Camelback, and Klean Kanteen bottles (sold separately); may fit additional bottles with compatible mouth diameter, threading, and a minimum bottle height of 7.3 inches. Filter, one cap, and lid weigh 3.3 ounces, plus the weight of the bottle. The LifeStraw Universal Water Filter Bottle Adapter Kit makes it easy to filter, using almost any bottle to scoop water from a lake, river, or other contaminated outdoor or urban source, so that clean, safe water is accessible anytime, anywhere. For each LifeStraw purchased, one child in a developing community receives safe drinking water for an entire school year.

I will never travel without it!
by AJRLS (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought this before a trip to Mexico because I had been told that the water was not safe to drink. I figured that this would probably pay for itself once you add up all of the bottled water I would need to buy, and it will last a lot longer for future trips. After this trip, I will never travel without this filter again! So easy to fill up in places I would have NEVER considered with a normal water bottle - public bathrooms, sketchy hotels, dirty public water fountains, etc. It comes with two different lids which both fit bottles that I own, but I use it mostly with my big kleen kanteen since it holds the most water. I have also taken it along on a few hikes, and even filled up from a river just to see if it worked- it did :) It is a little tough to suck water through the filter during the first few uses, but it gets easier the more you use it. Oh, and I didn't get sick at all on my trip despite many risky water situations, so 5 stars very much deserved!

Powered by LifeStraw

Great product! I bought this for the new/old building I work in which has a really bad tasting water fountain. The carbon filter really took the odor and bad taste out. However, "powered by LifeStraw" is fake news. This straw is powered by me, I do the sucking. My sucking power has immensely increase in value thus leaving my wife much happier. Anyway, again, great product and will buy again once it stops working.

Nice for travel
by Zero Signal (4 out of 5 stars)

When I had to travel to Mexico for work, I decided to buy this filter and a 32 oz. Nalgene bottle. I've been to Mexico before, and while it's usually pretty easy to buy a bunch of water bottles, it's way more convenient to be able to refill from a tap.

Long story short, it's a great filter. The one way valve that allows air into the bottle is restrictive, and the filter adds more restriction, so it's not always easy to drink out of it. About like drinking a milkshake through a straw, I'd say, certainly manageable for most people.

The only thing that keeps me from giving it five stars is the plastic taste that came out of the filter for the first few uses. It eventually went away, but it was very noticeable for a few weeks despite the charcoal filter stage that removes most sources of bad flavor. This was despite soaking it in several changes of water to flush out any residue.

I drank Mexican tap water out of this filter for a solid week with absolutely no ill effects. I've stayed in Mexican hotels that have a placard right by the sink that says NOT POTABLE. A little off-putting when you're trying to brush your teeth. This last hotel claimed to filter all of its water, but why take a risk? With this filter, I can be reasonably certain that the water I'm getting has no harmful bacteria in it, and I don't have to worry about buying water or getting dehydrated while working.

All in all, I'd recommend this filter without reservation. Make sure to buy it a few weeks in advance to let the plastic taste dissipate. I also recommend rinsing it in fresh water repeatedly.

Saving the planet

I have been using for a month and all I can say is this product is planet saver. I used to spend a few bucks a day buying bottled water till life straw came across my life. I'm from Peru where we don't have drinkable water from the tab so this is so convenient at the moment.

Yes! This is what you need!

This product does exactly what it is supposed to do and does it very well. Used it on a 6 night backpacking trip in the Sierras. Used it every day. The more I used it, the happier I was with it. Over 30 years of backpacking experience and this was by far the easiest way to get clean water down my throat ever. So nice to have technology give us a happy, easy bottle of water. The photo shows the Lifestraw featured in the San Jose Museum of Technology. Seeing that display after my trip was the cherry on top. This product is real, good and, if anything, under praised.

Tastes terrible, even on clean water
by Raederle Phoenix West (1 out of 5 stars)
August 15, 2018

I love the concept and was excited about this. Similar to wearing an (organic cotton + carbon filter) ICanBreathe mask on my face to filter the air wherever I go, this is supposed to be a portable water filter so I can find clean water wherever I go. Many reviews implied to me that this would help clean tap water and make it taste better. That was not my experience at all.

I followed the directions. I tried cleaning it thoroughly and soaking it extra, but nothing helped. This made all water I drank through it taste terrible. I sometimes brush my teeth with charcoal, so I know what charcoal tastes like and this makes all water taste like charcoal.

I don't know if mine is defective, but nothing seems amiss except that it is very hard to suck water through. It makes my cheeks and mouth tired in just a few pulls of water. And then the water I get tastes like charcoal, as I already said.

I have absolutely nothing I can do with this expensive, bulky thing. Complete waste for me. Very disappointed.

This is a good product that is great for camping and hiking
by Brogan Stich (3 out of 5 stars)

This is a good product that is great for camping and hiking. For day to day use its not so great. my largest complaint is that often the small o-ring that holds it to the water bottle; very often pushes off and you'll start to leak water. the fix is easy but annoying cause you'll spill water at least every few fill-ups. This along with how the lid and cap screws on, really make this hard to use daily. They both screw on the same way so trying to unscrew the cap you unscrew the whole lid. Like I said this is something you should get and use when the situation is right. hopefully, they make a V.2 that fixes these issues.

Fits well and is very durable.

Bought this for our recent trip to Mexico. Probably didn't NEED it, but we'll use it when camping anyway so I figured why not? It fit several bottles we already had and we had no leaking issues. When my nalgene bottle was dropped in the street and bumped around by a car ("clipped" by the tire), it held up well with just a couple of scratches. I expect it will last us a long time. Will also be nice to have in case of emergencies.

Better with a 21 oz Hydro Flask
by A. E. (4 out of 5 stars)
June 18, 2019

I'm surprised that Life Straw doesn't tell you this. However, it doesn't matter whether you use a 21 oz or a 24 oz Hydro Flask. The water in the bottom WILL NOT go up the straw. Therefore, buy the 21 oz and have a smaller, lighter bottle. The water in the bottom of the 24 is excess because it won't go up the filter. I'm flabbergasted at the reviews that say this leaks. There is no possible way. Very well made. The taste of the water is great, if you READ and FOLLOW the directions.

Those who have said "If the filter falls of, you get a mouth full of unfiltered water..." I have to ask: Did you USE THIS before you took it out hiking? It takes some EFFORT to suck water up through the filter. Did you not NOTICE that there was no effort required? And what did you do, jog between St. Louis and Amsterdam? Use this as a football? Juggle a dozen as part of a backwoods entertainment act? I mean, this filter is SOLID in there, so I'm thinking that, again, the instructions were not referred to (seat the filter in properly, and it works brilliantly).

I bought this for international travel because I'm going to be in the middle of the Andes and have no idea what water sources will be available. I've use Life Straw's gravity bag in my van for a long time and Life Straw works precisely as advertised, as long as you read the manual.
5 stars for flavor, 4 stars for Travel because, even with the smaller Hydro Flask, there is still some water in the bottom (probably nothing can be done about this) and 4 stars for Ease of Use because I'm building up some jaw muscles sucking on this thing :-). Overall, though Five Stars. I've had other filters, didn't trust them to the point that I do Life Straw. I'm willing to have to suck a bit harder to be ensured that almost all of the nasty crap that we humans have put in the collective water supply get filtered out. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, this product...
