low-quality and incorrect paintwork, not as advertised

Kudos:
1. The AR layer offers a lot of description and photos of the terrains on the moon, which is very cool to explore.
2. The model has a good texture, which feels great to hold in your hands.

Issues:
1. The paintwork ruins everything. AstroReality marketed this as "The Most Precisely Made Moon Model" that has "unparalleled scientific accuracy." The item in their photos and video shows incredible details and variation of colors and patterns. The one held by their founder and in the demo video has lost some details, but it is still acceptable. However, the items I received are like a joke. Many areas are just carelessly and aggressively covered by a dark color, and those patterns don't even have a similar shape as the one they showed in their photos.
2. They said that each model was hand painted by their "most experienced" artists and has 98% modeling accuracy. How should I interpret this statement? Shouldn't this mean your artists will do a better job than machines? If not, why don't you design a paint system to make sure the quality of each product meets your ad's description and claims. If the item is just merely a low-quality mass production product, why do you even mention this at all? Meanwhile, I even found that some terrains were incorrectly painted on the model (or forgot to mark).
3. I was super excited to know this project on IndieGoGo. Clearly the product they delivered is a low-quality mass production item and has nothing to do with craftsmanship. But they charge it for $238. Given its quality, it is unreasonably expensive.
4. The AR experience is not so good. You need to move your photo closer to the model to see some details of the photos, but the app requires a certain distance from the model to work. Thus, the app kind of needs to rescan the model very frequently. You have to hold the phone very stable to make sure the AR layer appears on your model while turning it around.

Beautifully made, one of a kind!

This product has become family fav for us! It is so well-made - nice color, texture, lots of details, and a solid heavy feel unlike the flimsy plastic products you may see in the toy store. We love it for the educational factor too. My kids really enjoy using the app to interact with it and explore the Earth in AR - it is like a globe with tons of interactive pictures and videos built into it. I'm consider buying another one as a gift (I think it can suit children ages 8-15).

Suggestion to the manufacturer: would love to see ongoing updates to the software to include more pictures/videos for the AR interactions! Thanks for the amazing product!

what a crafted product. I really love how all the details I can see on this lunar model. My girlfriend gave it to me as a gift for Valentine's Day, I really like it. Especially I can use AR app to find out more infomation about moon. Highly recommend this to school teacher and astronomy enthusiasts. It also can be a good decoration to put in my apartment.

Cool - just not nearly as cool as advertised

I echo the other reviews that this is not as advertised. I received the Lunar Pro as part of the Kickstarter for their EARTH model (more on that below). The Lunar model is big, and feels very hefty. The modeling seems ok and fairly close to what was advertised. However, the painting is what is lacking. There is very little variation between "light gray" areas and "dark gray" areas, and the paint does very little to draw out the details of the cratered surface. It's all just the same light gray, while the smoother "seas" are all dark gray.

One major disappointment is the complete lack of any of the debris "spray" from some of the more visible craters on the Moon's surface. For example, the Tycho crater is one of the more prominent features on the Moon's surface, with lines of lightly-colored debris spraying out in a dynamic star pattern that gives clues to the size of the impact. On the Lunar model, the crater is there, but the debris is completely absent - leaving Tycho to look like every other non-descript crater on the model. It is disappointing, and immediately breaks any sense that this is "the most accurate lunar model ever produced." No, it's not - they missed some key features that are readily visible. I may try to fix some of this with my own paint work, but after spending $200, I shouldn't have to. Lunar has the feel not of a $200 unique collectible, and more like a $50 item from your local planetarium gift shop.

As for the AR functionality, it's there....but it's not compelling. And it's a lot less convenient than just looking up info on your phone or computer.

I mentioned earlier that I got this as part of the EARTH Kickstarter, and since I can't find an EARTH page on Amazon, I'll just leave this here: the EARTH model makes the Lunar model look like a masterpiece by comparison. The paint applications on EARTH are sloppy, the detail is poor, the topography is a mess. From a distance, it looks...ok. Up close, it's just a mess. This is nothing like what you would expect from what they advertised. While it has the same hefty weight, that is all it has going for it. And the AR is completely pointless. The points of interest are mostly cities...which you can't even see on the model. Moreover, if I want to learn about Shanghai or Buenos Aires, I can go on the web, so I don't have to pick up the awkward EARTH model, open the app, struggle to get it in focus, fight with the fiddly recognition software, in order to get a few truncated blurbs about stuff you can't even identify.

While Lunar feels like a $50 souvenir, EARTH feels like something you'd find at a garage sale. Don't bother.

So much I didn't know about the moon! 2nd purchase

Lots of fun discovering the history and features of the moon with this superb quality moon model. The moon feels solid and heavy in hand like it's made from stone, and it looks nice as a decoration piece. The interactive software takes a minute to get the hang of but browsing about with the full feature set is quite an interesting and educational educational experience. In looking forward to discovering more about the moon and perhaps picking up one of their other planetary models.

Update: liked the way it looked in my apt so much I bought another for my Father! Enjoy holding it and just looking at the features of the moon. It feels like a solid piece of stone with a surprising weight to it.

Good idea bad execution

Good idea but impossible to operate. When it works it's good but if you move a centimeter you lose focus and it have to refocus to get any information up again. Also it doesn't like to focus often. Takes me almost 10 min to get any info to pop up and less than 1 to lose it.
