Absolute Enjoyment

This is written after one week of ownership. I love it. I compared the Mavic Air to the Spark and the Mavic Pro. By most accounts, this was the best of both worlds. As an inexperienced flyer, I can say that this is incredibly easy to fly, the pictures and video are amazing. I have flown in winds up to 20mph and the video looks like it's a still day. The case that comes with this is excellent. it is small and compact and has plenty of space for your accessories. I purchased a hard case though, because it's what i wanted. I've flown approximately 15 times. Each time brings more joy. The controller is comfortable and easy to get used to.

For anyone getting this drone, as a first timer, I would recommend watching some tutorials to prepare. I would also recommend getting an SD card to put in. Make sure you get one that is capable of writing at the speed necessary to write 4k video. (i purchased the SANDISK Extreme)
**Update**

After 3 weeks of ownership, I still feel the same. There is a lot to be said about this drone and it's portability. I keep it with me all of the time. I fly during my lunch breaks, and every day that I can after work. The intelligent flight modes make getting great cinematic shots a breeze. The advertised battery life of each battery is 21 minutes. Don't expect that to be the average. That is a maximum, and when you get to 19 minutes, you're going to be in prayer that it makes it back home to land safely. When flying with caution, you'll actually get closer to 16-18 minutes. This is because once it starts warning you about battery life, you'll bring it home and replace and start again.

My recommendation is for you to stop reading reviews and buy it. You will not regret it.

DJI beat the desire to drone out of my body...that's how bad they are!
by Hector L Lopez (1 out of 5 stars)

Got my MA last year (March), great for the first few weeks...then the nightmare began. If you happen to get a unit that was good off the assembly line you're probably ok, I wasn't that fortunate. I started experiencing connection failures between the bird and the remote which seem to be a pretty common flaw after looking up the issue online and on respective forums, so I communicated with DJI, went through a thousand hoops and procedures and finally got a RMA to ship it back (at my expense) for repair...got it back and after a couple of weeks -boom- the exact same issue again, but this time DJI wanted to charge me for the 'repair' they didn't get right the first time alleging the drone was damage. I had disclaimed that the drone had a minor incident where the clipped a bush and landed on its back with absolutely no damage to the drone only very minor scrapes on the hull, but that it had work absolutely fine after that. The issue was the exact same issue that had not been resolved in the first place. The seller would not step in to help since he basically claimed -understandably- his relationship with DJI was more important than my issue and Amazon left me standing in the dark with this 1k paperweight because the a-b-c policy (or whatever it's called) had ended a couple of days after. Don't just take my word for it, look around, do your due diligence before handing these people your hard earned. Again, if you get a good bird out the box your probably golden, but if by any chance your encounter the need to deal with DJI customer service, take your meds, it might be a painful ride and learning experience. I love the bird and the whole droning concept, but their customer services' contempt towards their customers is something I thought you wouldn't find on a front like Amazon...I was wrong.

Top quality drone (Great purchase, No regrets) - Tips for potential purchasers
by J&A (5 out of 5 stars)
August 20, 2018

This was an awesome and extremely fun purchase. I've had it now for 2-3 months and have learned a few things that be a helpful to new perspective owners.

This is the Fly More Kit, which differs from the standard drone because it comes with 2 extra lithium batteries and a really nice travel pack, which is designed to hold all of the equipment in one place. In my opinion, its worth the extra money to get the "Fly More Kit" as the batteries only last around 20 minutes each and take a little while to recharge. The "Fly More Kit" gives you an hour of flying time with 3 batteries. Also, the travel bag works well as it keeps all of the parts together and is essentially free for the price.

The drone comes with an internal 8 Gb of storage, but you'll likely want to purchase a memory stick. I bought a Samsung 128GB Evo Plus Class 10 Micro SDXC from Amazon and it worked great with the Drone and my Imac and MacBook flawlessly.

You'll also want to purchase a ND Polarizer filter right away as the footage won't look as good without one. I went a month without the polarizer and wish I would have purchased one right away. This is because there is a ton of light that effects the drone at altitude. Especially if you're shooting around the ocean. I purchased the PolarPro Vivid Collection Filter 3-Pack (ND4/PL, ND8/PL, ND16/PL) Cinema Series for DJI Mavic Air and it is top notch.

Its recommended to shoot in manual mode with the mavic air to get the best video and photos. There is something called the 180 rule, which allows you to set your video settings correctly to get the best picture. However, if you're by the water, you can't adjust the drone to fit within the 180 rule settings without a ND filter.

Pro:
1) Folds up extremely small (Smaller than all other DJI Drones)
2) Relatively easy to learn how to fly
3) Shoots 4K video, has a 28 Megapixel camera
4) This has collision avoidance cameras in the front, bottom and the rear to automatically prevent from colliding with objects. (This is important if you are new to drones to help prevent you from crashing).
5) Top quality design and construction

Cons:
1) The Mavic Air works on a wifi signal and it works pretty well. I was able to fly my drone 5000 feet away, but it does seem to get interference often if you are by a city. Its not overwhelming interference, but it is a slight issue. In comparison, the Mavic Pro has an enhanced communications system that establishes a better / more solid connection with the drone, but the Mavic Pro doesn't fold up as small and is slightly more expensive. This was the biggest difference in my opinion. The Mavic Pro also will maintain a better connection when using "Active Track" due to the enhanced signal.

I hope this helps your research!

fun drone... infuriating warranty support team.
by Michael Dickson (1 out of 5 stars)
December 15, 2018

I've held off on writing this review, hoping DJI would come through, but alas, they have not, and I've grown tired of speaking with their warranty and support teams. Here is a relatively brief recounting of my issue with their warranty team.
-In July, my drone suffered a drifting malfunction that caused it to crash sideways into the side of my house. I sent the drone and controller in, and despite my repeated attempts at explaining to them that I witnessed the drone drift erratically sideways, they insisted the crash was pilot error, and the "resulting" malfunctions were not covered under warranty. After multiple discussions via email and phone, I ultimate gave up and payed the approximatley $150 repair fee. I received a replacement drone, and my original controller
-The replacement drone suffered the exact same drifting malfunctions. I recorded video of this obvious malfunctioning behavior, which I have attached here as well. I sent the replacement drone and my original controller, back for review/repair, along with a lengthy explanation and the video linked above.
-This time, I received a replacement controller, and on the packing sheet it was noted that there had been an issue with the control stick. On the first flight using the new controller, it is obvious that the drifting issue has been resolved. To anyone even halfway paying attention, it should be very obvious that the drifting issues were controller related and not aircraft related. Moreso, anyone with half a brain would also realize that a controller issue could not be the result of an aircraft crash. As such, I requested that DJI refund me the repair costs, as a non-crash related malfunction would be covered under warranty.
-For the past 4 months, I've been back and forth with DJI support teams. Dozens of phone calls and emails explaining the situation to a support team member, who then communicates with the technical team, only to return a week later and parrot the same "I'm sorry but they found no evidence that the crash was caused by a malfunction"... No matter how many times I explained that it didn't matter what caused the crash, I payed to have a malfunction fixed, and the malfunction turned out to be with the controller, and obviously could not be the result of the crash. Every support agent I spoke with seemed to understand my plight, but the technical team (who apparently had the last say in the matter, and who I could not speak with directly) continued to resist my request to have my repair fee refunded.
-At this point, I'm just fed up and done dealing with it. I've spent far more hours dealing with this than $150 was worth. I've mostly exhausted so much time simply out of principle, hoping they would eventually stand by their warranty.

Anyway, I've enjoyed my mavic air, but if you choose to purchase one, understand that if you ever need warranty work performed, expect them do do everything they are able to point the finger at you as a pilot, even when their is a mountain of evidence to the contrary.

Terrible DJI Customer Service
by Tony K (3 out of 5 stars)
December 6, 2018

Great product with awesome quality videos but the customer service is the worst you could possibly ever deal with. Customer service is so poor that it is hard to beleive. If you buy the product hopefully you won't have a problem. If you have a problem be prepared for a living hell. 3 stars due to customer service.

Pretty much stumbled upon on amazon
by J (5 out of 5 stars)

As advertised. Im no expert. This is the first drone Ive ever bought. Pretty much stumbled upon on amazon. This thing is flat out amazing! Takes about 30-60 min to setup the drone, the app, and to learn enough to fly and do most things. Once again I have no standards to compare this to but it goes sky high, has a range >4km total, and can go ~40mph. It also shoots amazing 4k videos. The connectivity so far has been super reliable for close range however it has been limiting factor for the range im getting. So far ive only flown it in urban/sububan settings. So far ive only recorded video at 4k; expect some stutter in most of your videos. Overall this thing is a beast. Cant believe I can buy something this awesome for this price and convenience.

DJI Mavic Air: One great drone with an equally great shortcoming.
by Mr. Pixel (4 out of 5 stars)
April 28, 2018

DJI Mavic Air, red; I love this drone despite a few major shortcomings. In the countryside it has great range, possibly as far as a P4P or other DJI drone. But in the city, the ever present wifi disrupts your signal so badly that you may not be able to bring it home from 500 feet away without Return to Home. DJI has much better live video technology in all it's other drones from the Phantom 3 on up. The Mavic Air's 'enhanced wifi' video and control system is so poor in the city, I am just amazed that they released it like this! On the good side: the aircraft, gimbal and camera are all really good in high wind, and the resolution is very acceptable though not as good as the Phantom 4 Advanced or Pro. If this were my only drone, I might consider sending it back because it can't fly anywhere urban without losing it's video feed and control at a disappointingly short distance. But in the countryside, I would sooner fly this than my P4P, it is more fun to fly. The battery life is stated to be 21 minutes, and I got 19 minutes on one long flight, and ended with 17% left, so I'd say the 21 minutes is almost for real if you wanted to fly it down to the nub. One great drone with an equally great shortcoming.

Update: after really looking over the image/video quality, I have concluded that there is a big area on my sensor that is slightly out of focus. This is a real annoyance, I see it all the time when reviewing my videos. Bothers me not having 100% focus across the full image area, so I may have to return or exchange this. Also had a troubling error message yesterday while in the air, it said "motor current error." sounds dangerous, but only saw that message once. Sad that they don't have better quality control on these.

The best drone for the travel enthusiast
by Neil K (5 out of 5 stars)
March 21, 2018

I've owned the Phantom 1-4, the Inspire, and the Mavic Pro. That being said, the Mavic Air is probably the best drone I've owned so far. Although I'm not going to get the same quality that I would on the Inspire, the size factor is a big plus. It's so damn small and portable! And the 100mbps and slow motion features are a plus as well. Overall I'm very pleased with the Mavic Air and will be using this exclusively on all of my travel trips due to its increase in sensors, smaller size for portability, and decent battery length. DJI did good with this one! Oh, and the Flame Red is beautiful :-)

I think you might be surprised at how much technology is packed in this small device
by John (5 out of 5 stars)
July 7, 2018

I was and still am torn with the decision between the Mavic Pro and the Air. I decided to keep the Air for several reasons. It is SMALL. So small that I can carry it in a large jacket pocket or my still camera bag in the place of a large lens. The images/video are not on a par with my still cameras and perhaps not on a par with my iPhone. But, there is little difference between the Air and other lower priced DJI drones other than perhaps the Phantom 4 pro or the yet to be announced Mavic 2. The control systems in the drone are excellent. This is a good entry point for me as it is small enough to take anywhere and I can learn to use a drone and expect good video and stills. I have watched hours of youtube reviews and tutorials. The learning curve to good, cinematic videos is long and I can progress with the air without feeling I am using a device that is simply a toy. You can wait to get the Mavic 2 or buy the Phantom 4 pro. I want something smaller than the Phantom and who knows when the Mavic 2 will appear. If you have the yen to have your first drone, you won't go wrong with this one. Seasoned pilots may also want it because of its capability and size. I have only had this, my first drone, for 30 days.

If your a professional, choose a different brand. Read my experience
by John Hendrich (1 out of 5 stars)
April 3, 2019

The customer service I experienced with DJI was horrible. I will never purchase anything from this company again.

I'm a professional real estate photographer. It has a 21 minute flight time but what it does t tell you is you really on get 80% of that time to fly. At 20% batter the software automatically takes over in a return to home mode. It disables you remote control and flies on its own. In my case it flew straight into a tree despite all my efforts to stop it. I tried to dispute their claim that the crash was my fault. They were never able to explain how it was my fault when I explained, if your software took over the drone, without asking me, and with disabling my controller so I could do nothing, how is this crash my fault. They just began to respond slower to my inquiries and eventually only offered me $20 off repairs. Which I considered an insult since they could never explain how this was my fault. So I paid full price for repairs but I will never use DJI again and if your any type of professional photographer I recommend using any other company. The best answer I got for how it's my fault, is they repeatedly told me I should fly it in an open field for safety even though I told them this is not a toy for me, I have to photograph and video homes. I've never crashed a drone in my career until I bought a DJI and it's software took over.

If your a professional, save yourself a headache and buy from a different company.
