A brilliant idea, terribly executed...

I've never been so excited for a product to let me down so hard. I got everything installed onto my T-bird, no problem. Everything was working for the first hour or so as I mainly played with the app and settings. As a guy who works in electronics, I was aware that the connection that transitions from your standard audio cable to the tape was going to be a bit fragile. I carefully place my guitar in its floor stand for the night, and look forward to rocking tomorrow. Unfortunately, the fret lights now toggle themselves on and off intermittently, though placing a finger gently on that fragile connection keeps them on. I send a detailed email to support, letting them know the issue, and got a response that was basically, "Have you charged the device?" Due to how weak this connection is, I'm sure many others will have had this issue, so I wasn't very satisfied with that response. No problem, I can return it. The CEO makes the claim in one of his videos that this will not damage your guitar or leave any residue behind. I can tell you, it absolutely will leave behind a residue that takes hours and hours of buffing to remove, and yet still feels sticky. After only being on the guitar for about 48 hours, the frets are discolored, even after several hours of cleaning. Hopefully, they will look better after a few more cleanings.

Pros
- The app is powerful, sleek, and easy to navigate. It definitely improves the guitar learning process
- Syncing the LEDs to instructional videos is a neat idea which makes it a lot easier to follow the instructor
- The "AI mode" is an innovative way to make sure you're playing the right notes and was pretty accurate (in some cases I had to move the phone a little closer to the guitar)
- The app has other cool features that make use of the microphone in the phone, such as a digital guitar tuner

Cons
- The hardware is a little clunky and could be smaller/streamlined. Taping the chord to the guitar helps but doesn't look great.
- The $200 seems a little steep considering that you have to provide your own guitar. Perhaps the price will go down in the future.
- You can't move the LEDs between guitars. If you buy a new guitar, you'll have to buy a new set of LEDs.
- In some songs (probably a small percentage?) the notes get too high for the frets with LEDs. Once you get past those notes the LEDs continue to work.
- I wish they had more training videos. This isn't really a con as much as a function of how new the app is. It does say that more will be added soon.

Summary
- Fret Zealot provides a neat and fun new way to learn to play the guitar. It combines colorful LEDs with a sophisticated phone app which results in much faster and more entertaining guitar lessons. While I find that it's a little expensive and could be more streamlined, overall I think it's a great product and I'd recommend it to anyone either learning to play the guitar or wants a cool guitar gadget.

Best customer service

I had some issues with the unit that came from Amazon. The joint was pretty fragile and broke at the solder points. I sent Fret Zealot guys a video of the problem, and they sent me out replacement strip no questions asked. They have had enough QC issues at the joint that they have figured out a better epoxy system and the replacement unit seemed much better constructed and works fine. You still have to be careful with the install and I recommend taping the wire to the headstock with no torque at the joint to prevent excessive stress and movement. App is great, and clearly this company is serious about developing and improving this product and app. 3M tape is strong and it did remove some of the finish on my cheap Ibanez fretboard which didn't bother me because I was reinstalling it anyway. I wouldn't put this on an expensive guitar. I will add another star in a couple months if it holds up.

Bad Product?

I was very skeptical about purchasing this Fret Zealot for my son, Complaints about the cost, the quality, the adhesive and the app worried me so I wanted to give this thing a thorough flogging before I handed my sons guitar back to him so this is what I found. First lets talk about the cost. Two hundred bucks seems a bit expensive but when you take R&D and the cost of even the less expensive online guitar lessons, believe me it's a much better option. The quality from what I understand has improved as the connection from the fret pad has been beefed up and the adhesive doesn't set up immediately giving you plenty of time for adjustment (Like 2 days). The app worked fine for me for the most part of the 4 hour session on a Galaxy 6. It did have a couple of glitches but it recovered in seconds. Overall this really is the best idea since sliced bread and I can see no reason not to purchase this product. The reason for 4 stars? 35000 songs and no Van Morrison? Shame on you guys.

I got this as a gift for my parents to use with one of their guitars, and when it came I was impressed by the look of it. My dad was excited and installation was straightforward (after watching a tutorial in the app), and they are enjoying it so far. Overall think it's a really neat idea and a fun easy way for guitar playing hopefuls and seasoned pros alike

Fret Zealot is awesome! I have had a guitar for a few years, but have rarely picked it up, as learning to play always seemed daunting. Since having Fret Zealot for only a few days, I've already learned some new & tricky chords. I found it to be very intuitive to install and fun to play with.

The visual component is what had been lacking for me in my previous attempts to learn guitar. I found myself picking up the guitar and then losing patience or getting distracted, but Fret Zealot really does make it easy to learn how to play, and helps engrain it into your muscle memory. I am loving the features on the app, and am impressed by the variety of songs that are offered.

I can imagine some of my experienced guitar playing friends will enjoy the light show option for performances too!

Love this product. It's like Guitar Hero that teaches you how to play a real guitar. It fit perfectly on my full-size acoustic guitar and is easy to use. It did take a little time to link up to the app, but once I watched the tutorial video I figured it out. The app itself is great, super intuitive and I was really impressed with the variety of music and function. Learning guitar is something I've been meaning to do for a while, and I really think this product is finally going to help me do it. Would totally recommend this product.

I've now had enough time to use my Fret Zealot and can say this product has a future. Yeah- they're the "new kids on the block", but come on- we know this is a cool use of technology. I've been playing guitar for almost 15 years now, been in bands, taught, been taught... the works. This is the first thing that's really inspired me to play some new scales and get back to re-learning the stuff I packed away in my brain when I became the lead singer and songwriter in my solo act.

There are a lot of features for beginners like video lessons, but I got it primarily to pop on new scales. Their song selection is decent, too. Playback can use some work and it takes some getting used to, but after trying AI mode where it listens to you, I can see this becoming amazing.

The one con is that you have to be careful during installation. WATCH the installation video people! It's kind of funny seeing people say they messed up during installation and then admit that they didn't follow the instructions. You only get so many shots with the Fret Zealot install before you run out of stickiness. The video is crystal clear and the company says the product is meant to install once and stay. It's an incredibly thin strip, but it needs to be so that it doesn't hit your strings- kinda a no brainer there. I'm amazed how quickly they leveraged this small LED technology.

I've attached a quick video of me playing around in E Major on my Shecter Omen 6 (yeah, I used to be into the harder stuff back in the day!). If you are a guitar nut you'll see the lights are corresponding to where I am playing (kind of guiding me through the mediocre improv).

Love fret zealot

Very cool product, it has its pros and cons. I got this after buying a new guitar, I tried learning guitar a few times since I was a kid, always seemed to hit a wall and give up after a while. Thought I would give this a try. It is by no means a magic pill that will make you an instant guitarist, only time and practice can possibly do that. What this does do, is really helps you keep that interest going by being visual and not having to look at books while trying to play. What I was surprised that I liked most were the video lessons, and how the fretboard was lit up on the strings while he is explaining in the lessons, that helps a lot. I spent some time going through the song library to learn some stuff I liked between practicing the lessons. This part needs some work, I love how it goes through every note to play but I get to the point after learning the notes at slow speed I switch it off and speed it up myself as it gets distracting, which is actually a good thing . The thing I am disappointed with is the ai mode learning the songs, not once have I got it to work with any song I have learned to play. The other thing I am concerned about is how long the led light strip will last as the surface of the rubber seems to be lifting in places.

I was worried about installation but it's actually really easy as long as you take your time and watch the instruction video a few times, even watch some YouTube videos to see people completely messing it up to see what not to do lol. As long as you follow the instructions and take your time it's very easy. Basically remove the strings and peel and stick a fret at a time, very easy.

I might have some gripes about this product but bottom line I cannot help but love my fret zealot, it's helped me learn, and kept me interested in playing, and given time I hope to have become a half decent guitarist.

Impressive product and customer service

Rarely do you find a company so willing to work with their customers in such an attentive and authentic way.

But let me start at the beginning...Over the holiday, I decided to do some research into musical accompaniments for a guitar I was purchasing as a Christmas gift for my fiancee. After some digging, I came across the Fret Zealot. Instantly, I knew this was the product I had been searching for. And after the look on my fiancee's face when she saw it, I knew I had made the right decision.

After getting started attaching the Fret Zealot to the guitar, we noticed that one of the frets was torn, and afterwards, would not connect to the app. I contacted the company to discuss the next steps, and was pleasantly greeted Shaun Masavage. He immediately assessed the problem and within a matter of hours, shipped a replacement to us. As I mentioned before, rarely do you find someone who is as attentive, considerate and willing to work with customers to find a satisfying and happy ending. Shaun even threw in a nifty pair of sunglasses with the replacement ;)

By the way, my fiancee loves the Fret Zealot and that makes me a very happy camper indeed. Thanks again, Shaun.
