Minor improvements to Gameplay, Franchise Mode stays stagnent
by Y. Sun (3 out of 5 stars)
August 2, 2019

Until the Sun starts rising from the west, another year brings along another lackluster addition to the Madden franchise. After 24 hours with the game after preordering like the EA sheep I am, I am again underwhelmed with the changes made to the game from last years iteration.

PROS:

New Face of the franchise mode: Replaces the dreadful Longshot story mode from last year. The mode lets you pick several college teams and has much more replay-ability than the two seasons of Longshot ever did. After making your way through college you play a year in the pros and can unlock various different endings based on how you play. Afterwards, it is essentially a single player franchise mode with few dialog options such as coach interactions and post game interviews. Though still not as replayable as I would have liked, definitely an improvement over last year.

X-Factor traits: Essentially special abilities star players have on certain teams to distinguish from your average NFL Joe. Though I thought these would be a gimmick at first, they actually make playing certain teams and players feel different than unique. Though some x factors are certainly more overpowered than others, it is a welcome addition to the franchise.

Gameplay: Though this should be expected, game play feels much more fluid than last year especially in the run. Clipping doesn't happen as often though still a problem, and linebackers can't jump 5 feet up in the air to pick off your ball. Trending in the right direction with the gameplay though I have still experienced frame rate dips and animation glitches

CONS:

Franchise Mode:

Franchise mode got no meaningful improvement from last year as there are still many features that players have been asking for for years that are not available. Basically a copy and paste from Madden 19.

MUT: Your favorite microtransaction riddled pay to win mode is back and earning in game currency to buy packs feels harder than ever this year. Despite this, it is the mode with the most added features such as a new challenges mode where you can switch up the difficulty to earn higher rewards. However, the reason I put this in the cons section is because the only reason EA puts any time and effort into improving this mode is because it is their money maker. Why put more resources into franchise mode when they can't put microtransactions into it? MUT as a mode dumbs down the rest of their game because they simply refuse to spend the resources on anything else which honestly has been a frustrating trend over the years.

Though I get excited by the demos and gameplay trailers with all the flashy new features every year, every year I come away disappointed. I've come to accept that I buy this game for the roster updates and this review is might just be a rant about me own stupidity. Anyways, Madden stays Madden and its up to you whether that justifies another 60 dollars or not.

Franchise Mode Frown
by Balthazar (2 out of 5 stars)
August 5, 2019

I hate the dark cloud that EA casts on the video game community with their monopoly via Madden. No other football game to even choose from. Franchise mode is another rerun from the prior year's game. Very few changes at all. Gameplay is not very smooth. Graphics are so-so. The overall football experience is vanilla - so, typical Madden.

I'll play it, because I like the franchise simulation CONCEPT, and there is not another football video game to even shop for, but it doesn't seem like I'm playing a different game than the last 3-4 Maddens. DULL.

More of the same, the new things are "Eh"
by Scottodactyl (3 out of 5 stars)

If you've played recent Maddens over the years, you know what you're getting into. All of the old modes are basically the same (Franchise, Ultimate team, etc). The gameplay is the same.

The big difference this year is the QB1 mode. Which kind of stinks. You play as a college team (well, your forced to pick from 10 schools you may or may not even like), and then you get drafted, and it's got a cheesy story, kind of like the Longshot story modes, only with less character. Basically, you've never played a college game in your whole time there, and then you get pushed into the starting position right before your senior year championship game... wait, what? Why didn't they just make you the star player from the college? Why the hell would an NFL draft you in the first round if you only played in 2 college games? Whatever.

The other new feature is the "special abilities" for the best superstar players. I guess it's fine. It doesn't seem like much of a difference in gameplay when I play them though.

I've played through two seasons of franchise, and the superstar players will send you "intimidation texts" before you play them. These texts are often *word for word* the exact same for every player, whether you're getting texted from Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, Andrew Luck, etc. They couldn't even come up with like 20 generic different texts to cycle through. There's like 3, at most. EA Sports is so lazy about the little things.

Anyway, I like playing this game because I enjoy the zen-like calmness of mindlessly grinding through games while I'm listening to podcasts or whatever. Like knitting, or doing puzzles. Madden 20 is basically the same game as it was when it was Madden 16. I only buy it every year because I use gift cards and I have an empty, soulless existence.

Best Madden I've played in a few years!
by B (4 out of 5 stars)

The last good madden game I played was on the PS3 lol last few years Madden just seemed bland and had no fun to it. I though what the heck, I'll give it another chance and bought it. The pre-order was confusing because it never gave me a shipping/arrive date. I canceled that order and bought it the day it came out and got in today. Been playing for a few hours and it's definitely my favorite Madden I've played in a long time.

Best Madden since the PS2 series; patches are making it worse
by Ralph (4 out of 5 stars)

UPDATE: This game has been patched now 18 times. They are on update 1.18. My original review below was when I first purchased it. The gameplay seems to change a little after every patch, so it is hard to rate this game. In some but not all of the patches, there is a problem with switching to the closest defender. They fixed it in like patch 1.12, but now it is a problem again in the latest patch. As they "fix" problems, new problems pop up. There are a lot of quirks in this game. My running back seems to stick to my own blockers or defenders, when there appears to be a hole to run through. The video highlights at the end of the game almost never show any of the touchdowns. The qb release is slow. The pass blocking is not normal; either it works perfectly or you will definitely be sacked even if you move in the "pocket." I just switched back to Madden 18 and find the gameplay better after adjusting sliders. I recommend Madden 18. I am reducing my rating of Madden 20 3 stars after the 18 patches and many many hours of gameplay.

ORIGINAL REVIEW: My favorite Maddens were on the PS2. Madden 05, 06, and 07 were my favorite. I really only care about franchise mode. I want a game that is fun, with realistic gameplay, responsive controls, and fluid graphics/framerate. Madden 18 and 19 for PS4 had everything but the fun factor. On pro mode or higher, the game was extremely difficult, while on rookie mode it was too easy. In Madden 18, I played a franchise on rookie and threw for 95 TDs and 5 ints and went 16-0 and won the super bowl easily. Most games I would win 72-3. I then changed to pro on my next season, and I was 0-4 with 2 TDs and 10 ints. Way to big of a jump. I quit playing. Basically the same thing on Madden 19. I really would have had to tweak the sliders to make it playable. On pro or online, Madden 18 and 19 required a lot of planning, thinking, and extreme concentration. Very stressful. I like realism, but I still want the game to have a fun factor. I think Madden 20 meets all of my requirements. It is a blast to play on pro mode (level 2). The games are competitive, but I don't feel stressed out. For those who really want the difficulty factor, I am sure levels 3 and 4 will provide that. The game is fluid with a great framerate on a PS4 Pro, with fantastic graphics. Madden 20 looks brighter, more colorful, and more vibrant than Madden 18 or 19. The controls are tight and responsive, but not as good as the PS2 Maddens. I guess that is more realistic, but I like to have immediate control of the defensive players. Madden 20 is good enough in that department. Overall, Madden 20 is my favorite Madden since Madden 05, 06, and 07 on PS2, with obviously immensely upgraded graphics. I recommend it.

Unrealistic garbage
by Chris Steventon (1 out of 5 stars)

Worst Madden by far. Game is unrealistic. Reads made by defenses are unlike any players at any level. Every other throw is inaccurate and right to the defense. Developers obviously have never played a down of football in their life. EA needs to figure it out

Good but has room for improvement
by Tom (3 out of 5 stars)

The last Madden I had was Madden 17 so for me personally, to make the jump from 17 to 20, I thought, was a pretty big one. I've never been a huge fan of MUT so I can't review that. In terms of gameplay, it certainly is a lot smoother then 17. Yeah the tackling is still a little off and defenders occasionally make the impossible jump to defend a pass. However, outside of those issues, I think this is a slight step up. Face of the Franchise is fun but I'm not too sure if you can get drafted by any other teams except for Miami and NY. I did pretty well at the Combine and lit up the College Playoffs and so I thought I'd go in the early first round but I was wrong. The commentary is definitely an improvement over the previous Maddens and hopefully they add new commentary content throughout the season. Overall, if it's been a few years since you got the last Madden, then I think this one would be a good one to get

I need to just learn my lesson
by r (1 out of 5 stars)

It's been a while since I picked up Madden and needed to scratch that NFL itch. Quickly was reminded why I stopped buying the game. Besides what seems to be a well documented kicking meter glitch (I saw reports going back to July) that is not yet fixed I now have the game just crashing on my PS4. Their monopoly on a NFL products means they don't care about the product quality they produce.

Franchise QB is fun, but Franchise mode itself leaves something to be desired...
by Tommy G (3 out of 5 stars)
September 6, 2019

Played this game nonstop for about a week, creating my Franchise QB, going through the college football playoffs, getting drafted 1st overall, then taking the Dolphins to the Superbowl while throwing for 5000+ yards and 40+ TDs. But then it sinks in that once you've accomplished all of that in your first season, the replay value really drops. I thought at least the Franchise mode would renew my interest in the game, but honestly it became tedious after week 1. Maybe I was expecting too much from the game, but honestly with only 3 real modes to play, it just seems like past Maddens had more to offer.
