46 Dr. Seuss derived Designs with some binding issues - printed on both sides of the page
by iiiireader (4 out of 5 stars)
November 1, 2016

I enjoyed Dr. Seuss as a child and have since read them to my children and their children. I was looking forward to receiving my new coloring book with artwork from the Dr. Seuss books. The book is nicely done but is missing some of my favorites (especially "Green Eggs and Ham".) There are a good number of designs in the book and there are so many books to choose from that it almost seemed a given that many would not be included.

The designs are detailed but not too intricate. Many of the designs spread across two pages and parts of the design are lost in the binding area. In my copy, the pages line up fairly well. What is a problem is that the binding is a hybrid of glue and sewn. It has many stitches and the glue is heavier on certain pages. Those pages are difficult to lay flat for coloring. While there are not many of those pages, the ones that have the issue will be very difficult to color as even when I break the binding, I have to struggled to get my very sharp pencil point into the coloring elements. For this issue, I dropped my review to four star.

The designs are derived from Dr. Seuss books rather than exact duplicates. According to the publisher, these are the books utilized: And to Think that I Saw It on Mulberry Street, The Cat in the Hat, The Cat in the Hat's Songbook, Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?, Dr. Seuss's Sleep Book, The Foot Book, Horton Hears a Who!, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, I Had Trouble in Getting to Solla Sollew, If I Ran the Circus, If I Ran the Zoo, The Lorax, Oh Say Can You Say?, Oh, the Places You'll Go!, Oh, the Thinks You Can Think!, On Beyond Zebra, One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, Scrambled Eggs Super, There's a Wocket in My Pocket!, What Pet Should I Get?, Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories, and You're Only Old Once.

This is what I experienced while coloring in the book and testing my coloring medium on the paper:
46 Designs derived from a few of Dr. Seuss' story books.

Printed on both sides of the page

Paper is white, medium weight, fairly smooth and non-perforated

Hybrid glue/sewn binding that is difficult to open to lay flat

Designs reach into the binding area/spine

Many designs spread across two pages and important elements are divided onto both pages

Alcohol-based markers bleed through the page. These will leak through and mar the designs on the reverse of the page.

Water-based markers and India ink pens do not bleed through but do leave shadows on the back of the page. These will be noticeable on the designs that are on the reverse of your working page.

Gel pens do not leak through but require additional drying time.

Colored pencils work well with the paper. Though it is smooth to the touch, it still has enough tooth to grab pigment. I tested both boil and wax-based pencils and got good results from layering the same color, multiple colors, and blending with a blending stick.

AWESOME COLORING BOOK - AS LONG AS YOU DON'T PLAN ON COLORING IN IT
by DisneyDenizen (2 out of 5 stars)

Gorgeous images. But this coloring book does not work for its intended purpose. You can not actually color in this book because it is bound like a regular paperback, not like a coloring book. Specifically, it does not lie FLAT. Pages are not perforated. There is no reasonable way to color in this book, particularly since images take up the entire page, right into the binding.

One of the most enjoyable coloring books I have had! This coloring book it AWESOME!!! I am very picky when it comes to coloring books and I will only buy the Johanna Basford coloring books because they Are better quality paper, and pictures, but when I saw this I had to have it. It is of the same quality as those I have bought in the past, I cant wait to start coloring!!

I LOVE THIS COLORING BOOK! It has the best illustrations and is on heavy paper. (I scan my coloring books into my computer because: 1. They are double sided and I use alcohol markers. 2. I have been known - rarely - to mess up and want to start again. 3. I want to do the same page in different colors. I print it out on exact index card stock that I get on Amazon) This book will take you back to all those great memories and it's just plain fun. I'm 52 yrs old and can't wait to start....but this book would be equally fun for a younger age even if they don't stay in the lines!!! :)

Fun! Quality! Great price!

I adore this coloring book! Quality, quality, quality! Takes me right back to childhood, right where a coloring book should!

Nice & chunky, good sized, well bound, fairly thick pages (printed on both sides, not perforated). Paper has a smooth but very slightly textured tooth. Dry medium would be fine, wet medium might go through pages.

There are a few issues, such as, many of the images are split over two pages, so some of the vital parts of the image are right in the crease. Also, most of the images are either just like or VERY similar to the originals, but a few are either given a modern treatment or look like they were traced b someone with a shaky hand.

For the price, just what the Dr. ordered!

I had already bought my own copy brand new and was telling a friend about it when she pouted, saying she'd never get a copy; so I searched and found this one for her!! With total excitement the day she got it she called and we talked about the fun the book was!

Imagine coloring your own Sneetches! or trying to figure out the whatchmacallit the boy took apart! This book is total Dr. Seuss fun with the added pleasure of YOU getting to choose your own colors. Don't you DARE cut out the color pages, but leave them in and just page them through like a story book and remember the stories your used to read! Have fun!

Great coloring book for the price. Highly recommend it.

This book was bought as a gift for a beginning teacher friend of mine. It has some of Dr. Seuss' most beloved characters in some very iconic scenes that you will no doubt remember from your childhood. A lot of these pictures have some very fine details to color, so they will please the most ardent of coloring enthusiasts. It also has a number of pages that are not as finely detailed for a younger group of colorers. Either way, it is sure to bring happiness to the person who receives it.

Great Pages, Back-to-Back
by Alessa Johntry (4 out of 5 stars)

This is the perfect coloring book if you're using markers and don't want to be committed to specific colors. With Dr. Seuss, anything goes! The pages are good quality and work well with sharpie sets. However the pages are back-to-back, so if your medium bleeds through or if you rip out what you're working on, you're wasting the image on the back. Wish this wasn't the case or that the images had a double set. I had to buy this book a second time just for this reason.

SUUUUEEEEESSSSSSS & colouring!!!! Hit & Miss!
by My ARTasticSelf,Top Contributor: Coloring (4 out of 5 stars)

I have to say that I am actually disappointed with this book.

That makes me truly sad to say that actually!!

I have loved Dr Suess since I was just a wee little one!

He is still my favorite to this day because of the impact his books have had in my life, my children's lives and how he has touched the lives of SO many others. So when I found out that there was an official Suess adult colouring book, I was VERY happy!!

So when the sale price came along......I HAD TO HAVE IT!!!

It came a few days ago and I want to love it! I REEEEAAALLLYYY do! I am sad to say that, in my humble opinion, it could be much better and more of the well known characters in it. Don't get me wrong, there are about half the book, good pages that I will color eventually. The others are either nothing I like, drawn too thick, or just a pattern of the same thing (like a filler type page).

So the technical specs are that it's a large square (10"). They are double sided printed, white, thicker pages. In my experiences with similar books you won't want to use very wet mediums like alcohol markers or paints because of bleeding through (unless you didn't want to color the opposite side) and recommend using card stock or a few sheets of paper as a buffer for any medium you choose.

I'm sure there are others who have a flip through of this book by now so you can judge for yourself if you want it. I will be keeping it because the price was good and I still love my Suess!!!

Thank You.
