What a piece of junk!
by Amazon Customer (1 out of 5 stars)

I saw this on the America's Test Kitchen" website and they strongly recommended and provided a link to the product here on Amazon. So I bought it. It was the "Back to Basics" branded peeler, btw. Once it arrived I used it and was greatly disappointed:
1. There is absolutely NO Suction whatsoever and no way to secure the base to the countertop. Dangerous!
2. It does NOT evenly peel apples, or potatoes. Apples fall off, or get jammed up, etc.
3. It is very messy and I have attempted to use it a number of times. Useless. more work than it's worth.
4. The blades on this thing are dangerously sharp. Don't let your kids use it unsupervised. It really is a hazard.

As for America's Test Kitchen's recommendation: its worthless. Steer clear of this product. Save your money, your blood pressure, and your fingertips. Complete junk.

Does not work. Good only for scrap metal.

Junk. After a couple hours of fiddling and adjustment of everything possible we were lucky to skin a quarter of an apple. The blade does not follow the fruit at all. Its a Victorio knock off and they missed the important part then made it cheap enough its not worth returning. We later purchased a real Victorio that looks almost the same for a similar price but peels every shape of fruit perfectly without a single problem.

Back To Basics Peel Away Apple Peeler, Corer.....
by RonNewYork (5 out of 5 stars)
October 13, 2012

I love gadgets as much as I love apple crisp so I had to get this peeler rated #1 by Cooks Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen (they performed a timed match with the peeler vs. a skilled chef and and the peeler finished in one-third the time). OK so the suction base sucks - meaning it doesn't suck. Maybe it works better on marble rather than formica or wood. The machine really has to be securely mounted and stable in order to work properly and efficiently. I used a 2.5-inch "C" clamp attached to the edge of a wooden table and it held the unit very firmly. So how well does it perform....my first few apples were failures. The apple got up to the coring blade and wouldn't advance and the peeling blade gouged deeply into the apple. I figured the coring blade might be dull so I removed it from the machine and took my sharpening steel, honed up the inside and outside edges of the round blade and re-assembled the machine. The machine performed like a champ - I processed 4 pounds of apples in minutes. (Golden Delicious, Red Delicious, Fuji, and Gala apples). If you are having trouble, make sure the coring blade and the peeling blade are sharp, make sure the coring blade is properly aligned, follow the instructions for adjustment of the peeler arm and be sure to securely tighten the wingnuts holding the coring assembly and the peeler blade. And secure the unit with a clamp if you are having difficulty stabilizing the suction base model.

Amazing Time Saver

I baked a French Apple Tart for my family. The good news: they loved it. The bad news: they want it every day. It requires 10 apples peeled, cored and sliced in perfect 1/4" pieces. That's a lot of prep time.To be honest, I was very sceptical when I ordered it but blown away by its ease of use when I received it. This gadget is amazing. It does take a little tweaking the first time you use it to get the peeling perfected so be prepared to burn through 1 or 2 apples before you get it right. After that, it works perfectly each time. It cut the prep time by 90%. My family and I are now concerned about gaining weight and high cholesterol levels.

It realy works!

I have seen this gadget many times over the years and have always been skeptical. However, I have very bad wrists from years of data processing and come the holidays peeling several apples or pototoes is a daunting and painful task.

This past Thanksgiving I decided to purchase the Back to Basics Apple & Potato Peeler and was pleasantly suprised to find that it actually works and works very effectively.

This model is easy to adjust the depth of peel and clean up is easy as well. It opperates smoothly and the suction cup holds tight to my formica counter top. It peels, cores and slices apples like a charm and makes short work of peeling a potato.

There are however, a few things that you should be aware. It doesn't come with any clear instructions on how to use or adjust it. (That was no problem tho because all you have to do is go the internet and type in "how to operate a potato/apple peeler". There are plenty of how to videos.) You can adjust the core/slicer blade down out of the way and easily peel potatoes but some potatoes have a flat side and the blade slides right by. If you adjust the blade to hit the flat side it can't accomodate the other side. But it does peel enough of the potato that it takes only a few licks with a regular peeler and your done.

I would definetly recommed this product for anyone even if you don't bake, its a quick and fun way to peel an apple as a snack or knock down that 5 pounds of potatoes for mashing.

Chinese Fakes

These are not back to basics or anything like that, I owe two of them, these are aluminum cast with a sticker on top of the box that says back to basics, and another one says MADE IN CHINA, the base is not rubber, is plastic so it didn't hold vaccum on a flat surface like marble, the handle is not wooden is black plastic, and all the gaskets are plastic, there is not replacement blade like in the original back to basics and last the box is awful, not appropriate for a gift. Do not buy this product or you will lose your money.

COMPLETELY different product than what was advertised. Not happy!

COMPLETELY different product and brand than what was advertised. Pictured at the top was what was advertised and pictured below is what I received. The weight description says it is 2.4 lbs and so when purchasing I thought it would be a heavy duty one like my current one, however, the one sent to me is probably less than a pound. It is not a "Peel Away" brand by Back to Basics. It is an "Apple Peeler" by Smart Gourmet. The knob to make the tabletop suction cup engage is on the opposite side as well as the knob to pull it back to the starting point is on the opposite side AND at the top which is a style I searched around to NOT get! I WILL be returning this...so disappointed!

Works Well for a While...Then, Not So Much
by Tommy Turbo (1 out of 5 stars)

I purchased this apple and potato peeler and slicer on May 18, and have missed my 30 day return window. That's unfortunate because, although this peeler and slicer worked beautifully for slicing a few apples, the slicing device has shifted such that the part that holds the apple is offset from the hole through which the core of the apple is supposed to track. This results in a mangled apple. The wingnut on the screw is stuck and will not budge. Further, the peeler is positioned such that it is impossible to use a screw driver or Allen wrench to attempt to unstick the wingnut from the screw. Even if I could adjust the slicer, I'm concerned that it would eventually shift again. I was so excited to have this kitchen tool. Now I'm disappointed in its performance, and even more so that I can't return it for a refund.

Suction bottom does NOT work.
by Nc (1 out of 5 stars)

This apple peeler works fabulously to peel and core apples. However, the suction bottom does NOT stick to any surface, including my glass top stove. I've tried everything suggested and it's clear the suction is faulty. Having to hold the corer down while coring takes a great device into the almost useless category.

Very Satisfied and Happy
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

This apple peeler arrived and I have to say it is probably one of the best purchases I ever fell into. It works incredibly well.

One of the 'frustrations' of peeling and slicing apples myself - was that overtime the repeated 'bother' weighed heavily on me. Don't get me wrong, peeling and slicing an apple by hand is not all that hard. And snacking on an apple is very healthy. But while preparing the first one is really no bother, nor the second, any after that... I found that the frequency of preparing one to snack on was getting longer and longer in between. (I would peel and slice one, declaring I would eat one every day! Then, soon it would be a week. Then maybe a month. Soon, it was not at all, and eventually I would need to start over).

And, I have learned that most important to me... it can't be 'burdensome' -- to set up or clean afterward. I'm not going to keep using something if it is a pain to set up or clean up after having used it. I think most importantly (for me) clean up!

But in this case, No set up and No parts to take apart for clean up. - I just run the end of it that touched the apple under the faucet. (Ten seconds tops. Disassemble nothing).

This simple device peels and cores and slices all at once.

And truly, from fridge to snack bowl it takes less than one minute.

This device makes it easy. (It does a great job too).

Now, to finally snack healthier!
