I have purchased these in past and loved them. Recently bought another, but it failed to work, even the replacement didnt work. Dealt with LisaMarie c/o seller, who requested I send replacement back so they could investigate.
Weeks later, I remain solar rainbowless. Too bad she couldnt have personally sent me one that she witnessed working where crystals werent broken if she cared so much about monitoring negative reviews, but alas, it was not meant to be...
Really disappointing.

I have many of these and really like them. I buy them a lot for gifts as well. they last for a very long time before they have to be replace. It's a hassle returning the item to get a new one shipped out if the product doesnt work. this last kikkerland the bottom rainbow makers had a lot of scratches in them and flaws on the inside. i work so much its not worth sending it back im just going to keep it. But the last 3 or 4 ive gotten ive purchased i noticed the same issues and even one of them didnt work due the gears being broke. but i still do love them. i just dont like the last 4 ive ordered. oh well .
Bought 2, one works great, the other melted!

I had 2 of these. One of them still runs every day and I love it and my cats love it! It absolutely has to be in direct sunlight though. If it is not in a window that gets direct sun it will not run. On lightly cloudy days it will not run! The other one I had up for a month or so and it stopped working. After further inspection I believe it had some sort of short in it as it partially melted the plastic around the solar panel... Which is a bit worrisome as a fire hazard. I do live in the southwest, and wonder if the sun got too intense for the device, but then again, the other one works fine. I still have the melted one and would love to send it back to MFG for their inspection, but not about to do so on my dime. I give the one that works 5 stars... Love it.... The other one was defective.
Nice, but not very robust

It's pretty cool when it's working, but there are a few issues. First, the solar cell is undersized. In order to function, it requires a LOT of direct sun exposure. It must have a clear and unobstructed line-of-sight with that fiery ball in the sky; if not, it simply doesn't rotate. Because the solar cell is fixed and doesn't have any adjustments to rotate, the run time is limited to when the sun passes directly by it (in other words, you can't swivel the solar cell so it gets the sun in the morning or afternoon, etc.). Second, the plastic gears are not very robust. Mine quit operating after a few months. I opened it up and lubricated the gears with WD40 and it ran fine again. For a few more months. Now all it does is sit there and click, as many other reviewers have noted. Upon closer inspection, I have discovered that the bevel gear is cracked. That stops the mechanism at the point of the crack and it just sits there and clicks. If I manually move it beyond the point of the crack, it runs fine -- until it completes the revolution and gets stuck at the crack again. It just doesn't have enough torque to continue. At the price point, I'm not going to replace it. It's pretty, but the service life, as confirmed by others, is just too short.
Great Concept. Crystal arrived chipped. Small refractions with short "throw". Panel needs to face su

My crystal arrived with a small chip at the edge. I don't think it is feasible to ask for a replacement because I am overseas. The item itself will rotate when the solar panel faces the right direction (i.e. directly at the sun). It doesn't matter if the sun seems to be shining brightly at its back or it looks very well lit in general, it won't rotate, if the panel is not facing the sun directly. So, go outside to an open field, if it does not rotate when it faces a certain a certain direction, turn it 180 degrees to the opposite direction and it will likely start to rotate. I place this in my car, so, since I am slightly below the equator, it will usually rotate when my car faces north but won't when the car drives southward. This is unlike a nodding toy I bought from japan, that keeps nodding regardless of where it faces as long as it is lit. Strangely enough, the panel of the nodding toy is half the size of the rainbow maker. Maybe, it's because the load of the rainbow maker is heavier. Also, I really wished a different crystal is used that can produce more dramatic rainbow refractions. In bright daylight, in the car, sometimes it is hard to see the refractions, because the "throw" is not very far and the refraction "particles" are pretty small. I have to move it closer towards the edge of the dashboard, so that the refractions will reach the darker areas of the car.
Ours has been working for 5 years

WE have had this in our kitchen window for over 5 years. We live in Michigan though, so it only works most of the time and hardly ever in February.
But I love it when it turns back on in the spring. All of a sudden there will be rainbows on the walls and cats jumping after them. Dogs chasing the cats. Children laughing. It's always a great time.
I purchased these as gifts and even sent a double one to my brother in law. Everyone has loved them.
Love the effect, just totally overpriced...

I have several of these, but I find that they're realllllly expensive for what you get.... I would like to see them with a larger solar panel, or even smaller, but higher efficiency if possible. These things have been around for years and years, I just don't see why they're this expensive. With mine, I purchased Swarovski strass chandelier crystals and added a few to each side - just little ones - and they work well! For the effect, it's worth it, but as an overall product, it just seems it should be a lot cheaper, especially when you go to a flea market and see all sorts of cool solar spinny things, chinese cats, spinning prayer wheels, japanese geisha, etc for just a buck.
Fills me with wonder!

Cheerful little gadget! I saw one of these at a friends house and just had to have one. When the sun catches it, the rainbows circle the room like magic. You will need a window that gets plenty of direct sunlight and I find that as the seasons change, I have to relocated mine to a sunnier window. I always forget it is there until the sun hits it and it fills the room with rainbows. It always cheers me up and I have recommended it to friends to buy as gifts for grandchildren. I'm in my 60's and it still fills me with wonder! Please note that this Rainbow Maker will not "make rainbows" by turning constantly...it will only work when the sun hits the solar panel directly. You might have to angle the solar panel so that the sun will shine directly onto it and it will still work even if the crystal hangs a little crooked.
Good crystal, but so many parts gets into problems, silicone spray frees it up when the crystal won'

Purchased this about 5 years ago, and it has had some use. The toy is model of complication, like a watch, where there are simpler more direct drive toys that aren't likely to break. The gears slowly get mucky, sealed as they are, and become too great of friction of their many gears to keep moving.
The solution is to spray silicon grease (which doesn't collect dust and is electrically inert), into the thing to grease the many pins. You can do this without removing the whole top. There is a plastic slip ring on the metal shaft, press it down to the crystal, and this should allow enough room to get a spray straw in.
Hope this helps get your sunshine back in.
Love the concept, but quality varies

Really love these (I've purchased 2 after receiving one as a gift a year or so ago). My problem is with the quality inconsistency of the solar panels. The one gifted to me works great. The first one I purchased was just ok, but I thought it might be a difference between the single and double models. I then purchase a second double model and that one is noticeably worse than the other two I have. It has a much weaker rotation and seems to be less responsive to sunlight overall. For the price, that's disappointing. Love the idea, just wish I could trust the quality more.
