Movies R Fun: Iconic Scenes as Children's Art | ||||||||||

Product Description
Let's face it, reading sucks . . . but movies are fun! In this children's picture book parody for grown-ups, Pixar writer and artist Josh Cooley presents the most hilariously inappropriate—that is, the best—scenes from contemporary classic films in an illustrated, for-early-readers style. Terrifying, sexy, and awesome scenes from such favorite films as Alien, Rosemary's Baby, Fargo, Basic Instinct, Seven, The Silence of the Lambs, Apocalypse Now, The Shining, and many more are playfully illustrated and captioned to make reading fun and exciting for kids who never grew up. A sly celebration of the things fans love most about these legendary films (and movies in general), this is one book that probably should not be read at bedtime.Top Reviews
Great collection, but limited target audienceby Avergonzado (4 out of 5 stars)

This collection of interpretative renderings of famous movie scenes is done by a Pixar animator, and the Pixar style is apparent in every sketch. The drawings are interesting and at times beautiful. I'm a big fan of the Deliverance and Fight Club drawings; a pair of menacing mountain men or an unstable-looking Tyler Durden look great in Cooley's style.
I'm not sure who would really find this book appealing besides me though. The drawings and movies are too risqué to really be meant for kids, but it's not really meant for adults either. It's placed under "juvenile humor" so I guess that's who he's aiming at. In any case I loved the collection, but I'm a big Pixar fan and a movie enthusiast in general.

If you're reading this, you know why you're here, so I'll spare you descriptions of the awesome and hilarious content (save one important word to come). Based on content alone, trust me - you want this book. It is genius. Buy it.
One concern I had before it arrived was the quality of the printing itself. I was worried it'd be like one of those flimsy Golden Book printings from the 50s-90s. Rest assured, this book suffers no flimsiness or other cut corners in production. Although its dimensions are small, it is robust in every way. The boards are hefty cardboard coated with a nice, thick, glossy finish. The binding seems strong. The pages are heavy stock with a matte finish and the colors are strong and bright. It's a pleasure to page through and I have no doubt it'll withstand abuse from even the most careless man-child (because no actual children should read this book)!
I do have one quibble: I bought this book looking for 2 images by Cooley floating around the internet - Fredo saying, "I'm SMART! Not DUMB, like everybody says! I'm SMART!" and The Jesus saying, "Nobody *$S with The Jesus." For whatever reason, neither of those images are in this text. I don't know if they were limited to his first limited edition run, or if they were only drawn after publication, or if something else is afoot here, but I was disappointed not to find them in the book, since they were primary reasons for my purchase in the first place. Even absent those great images, though, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book.
When I purchased it, Amazon was charging significantly under cover price. About $8 for a $13 book of this quality is a steal. If you have friends who are movie fanatics, buy one of these for each of them!

A really funny take on the movies. Written in the style of the classic Little Golden Books for children. It is not for children, however. Some of the movies for which is provides illustrations are The Godfather and Fargo. I bought it for a friend of mine who loves movies, and we had a great time reading it together.

Nice illustrations. This book brings the movie scenes depicted to life with a minimum of words. Three stars because when I explain what the page is about, my grandchildren cry.
NOT FOR KIDS... kinda?

I bought this book for myself and then I bought another copy for my cousin who has a 1 year old. There are a lot of 'adult' themed references to adult movies... like Pulp Fiction (say 'what again') or Alien (chest bursting) or Clockwork Orange... films that your kid shouldn't watch until they are 10 or 13.... so obviously they wouldn't get the references.
The book itself is a little small and I guess it would work as a coffee table book but it's not large enough.
Just plain wrong...I love it.

Freaking hilarious. Hands down one of the funniest and most wrong books I've come across in ages. Modelled(mocking) the classic Golden Books series of children books, this is the perfect companion for anyone that loves adult films. Josh Cooley is a brilliant madman, and I look forward to seeing future editions of this.
Hilarious for any film buff!

Share Your Love of Classic Cinema with the Younger Set

One of the many annoying things about being a parent is the interminable wait for your offspring to grow old enough to share in the joy of watching your favorite movies. The years creep by, and eventually they'll be able to sit still long enough for 'Star Wars' and 'Raiders of the Lost Ark'...but what about your R-rated favorites? 'Alien, Clockwork Orange, Goodfellas, Jaws' and 'The Godfather'...
When, oh when, can your kids enjoy those classics?
The answer is NOW, baby!
This exquisite parody of a Little Golden Book is a perfect way to introduce the young'uns to those previously forbidden scenes of sex, violence and hillbilly rapists!
On second thought...maybe you'd better keep this one hidden away from the kiddies, or you'll have a lot of 'splainin' to do.

I loved this brilliant, beautifully done little parody of R-rated films--and their focus on horror, violence, and sex. What a clever appreciation of American films and their ability to shock, horrify, and thrill! Framing these images in the guise of a children's book is a master stroke.

I bought this book for my son. It may be inappropriate for little kids but the title should tell you that. They have so many classic scenes from some of the greatest films of all time. This is definitely one of the gifts the cool uncle gets his nephew or niece.
