Feeder drops a handful of seed into the dirt everytime a bird flies awayby Karen Barnes (1 out of 5 stars)

My Mom has this feeder and it works great, so it's possible my experience is just a fluke, but I figured I'd still mention it. The birds loved the feeder, but when I tried to adjust the tension so that the crows wouldn't be able to use it, I found that there was no happy medium that both allowed the cardinals to access the food and prevented the crows from getting it, so that was frustrating. The major issue, however, is that something was faulty with the feeder that caused it to lose tons of seed everytime the birds flew off of the ring. I didn't notice at first; the seed seemed to disappear at a reasonable pace for the first week or so. Then by the next week it was 3/4 of the way gone, which I thought seemed quick because only a few birds had noticed the feeder up to that point. I filled it back up, and within a few days the feeder was completely empty. I couldn't understand what was happening until I noticed that all the seed seemed to be all over my lawn directly underneath the feeder, mixed in with the mud and mulch. I went back over the manual making sure I had followed every instruction correctly, but could not find any evidence of pilot error. I tried again with the rest of the bird seed I had, and noticed that everytime the birds flew away a handful of seed would drop out of the feeder. The birds happily ate the seed off of the lawn, but I didn't pay $90 for the birds to chow down in the grass. By the time I figured out the flaw it was too late to return the item, so now I'm out nearly 100 bucks and I still don't have a bird feeder. Naturally I'm pretty frustrated.

So when I first purchased the Brome feeder a couple of weeks ago, I posted the below comparison between this Brome feeder and the Yankee Droll feeder. I have to say that this is better than the Yankee droll feeder. The fact that I do not need to ever charge a battery is a huge plus. Also, because it is 100% squirrel proof (squirrels cannot get any seeds loose like with the Yankee) keeps the seeds in the feeder longer, and therefore I do not need to replenish as often as only the birds get them. My comparison below is still true, but I have to say I prefer this feeder hands down. I highly recommend it!
I have both bird feeders and I love them both. I've had the Yankees flipper for 6 years now, it is still working and I only had to change the battery once. About the same price as this Brome feeder. My husband and I wanted another squirrel proof bird feeder to hang on our oak tree. This is when I stumbled upon this bird feeder and due to all the great reviews I decided to give it a try. Both bird feeders work great, and these are the ONLY squirrel proof bird feeders on the market that actually do work, so here are the differences:
The Brome does not require a rechargeable battery, the Yankees does.
The Brome is not as entertaining to watch the squirrels as the squirrels cannot get to the holes where the seeds are. The Yankees allows the squirrel to get there just so it can flip them and throw them off the feeder, thus an entertainment to humans. I'm not mean to squirrels, I do feed them cracked corn, but it is funny to watch them spin a few times and get thrown from the bird feeder. They do manage to get seeds thrown on the ground due to the flip action, and some brave squirrels actually will flip several times just so they can get some seeds, but they do give up after a while.
The Brome has 6 holes, the Yankees has 4. The part I do not like about having 6 holes is that 2 are in the back where I can't see the birds which represents 33% of the holes while the Yankees has 4 of which only 1 is in the back which represents 25% of the holes. So you get to see more of the bird with the Yankee. The Brome has a dome shape which protects the seeds from getting wet from the rain, the Yankee does not, but the seeds don't get very wet.
Bigger birds such as pigeons got to eat sideways with the Brome as the dome is in their way. I like all birds so my setting is set to allow all size birds but not the weight of the squirrel. With the Yankee there is nothing to set, it will allow 1 pigeon, but 2 are too heavy. All in all, both these bird feeders are awesome, and worth the money. I only had the Brome for 2 days and the Yankee for 6 years and still going, so hopefully the Brome will last as long. It is well built so I expect it to. You won't be sorry buying either one, just read the differences and decide which one is better for you.
Update - Aug 2019, plastic tube cracked, I contacted seller and within 2 days I received a new one. Totally free - no shipping charges or anything. Amazing company!!

To date I have purchased 3 of these feeders. The first I bought for myself in 2012 and I can honestly say it is the first feeder in 30+ years that the squirrels absolutely cannot get into. I've had many really good laughs watching them try. The second one I bought and gave to my mother; she has several feeders that she calls bird feeders but really they are squirrel feeders. The birds were delighted with a feeder just for them and enjoyed it the entire summer. Unfortunately the squirrels were not delighted and finding there was no way to get at the seed proceeded to gnaw the hook out of a crossbeam and drop the feeder about 15 feet to the ground. We know it was squirrels because she brings all the feeders in at night so the raccoons can't get at them. The next year when I visited I replaced the broken feeder and installed a very heavy duty hook with a gnaw guard; that was 4 years ago and the birds are still very delighted...squirrels not so much but they are resigned to the other feeders. So the bent feeder has been in my garage ever since, but I recently contacted Brome about purchasing the necessary parts to fix it as I am refilling my existing one about every 5-6 days (unusual for me for a feeder this sized) and have another hook I could use. Within 24 hours I received an answer to my email, the necessary parts are shipping the next day no charge and they included videos for installing parts. WOW!! Totally unexpected but kudos to a most excellent customer service. Brome absolutely stands behind their products and their products are the best! I've included a picture of the damaged feeder so you can see the parts necessary for it to be fully functional are extensive. I'll add a picture when it's fixed and hanging with my original feeder.

I've had my Squirrel Buster Plus for about a month. It hangs just outside my office window, where I can watch the birds throughout the day. Because of the large size and weight, I had to upgrade from a suction cup hanger to a sturdy wall mounted model. With the old feeder, the squirrels found it big sport to tear it off the window and feast on the spoils scattered on the ground. They ruined 2 feeders and frankly, took a lot of the fun out the whole experience. Now I have my revenge. It's hilarious to see the little buggers filled with frustration and give up. The first night, I even had a raccoon that gave it a try and failed.
I was worried, because some of the reviews indicated larger birds like Blue Jays, couldn't land on the Cardinal ring, but that hasn't been a problem with my feeder (see photo). It took them a few days to perfect their landing technique, but they now visit daily. I use a high quality mix, and find it lasts longer. I've had as many as 8 finches feasting at one time, as well as Cardinals, Rose Breasted Grosbeaks, Downy and Yellow Bellied Woodpeckers, Red Winged blackbirds, Brown Thrashers, Carolina Wrens and numerous others. I could dial it down to eliminate the larger birds, but I enjoy them just as much as the little ones. That said, I've noticed the Chickadees seem to be avoiding it.
Oh, so you don't think I'm too much of a curmudgeon, I put a special feeder with black oil sunflower seeds in the tree for the squirrels. Now peace and harmony has been restored. Thank you Squirrel Buster Plus!
Not Cardinal-Friendly - but otherwise pretty great

There are many things I like about this feeder, but a few things I don't.
Pros:
It does seem to be very well-constructed, heavy duty and doesn't feel cheap. Very solid and doesn't seem to swing around a lot when there's multiple birds on it which I think they like.
Seed stays pretty dry - the seed ports are quite recessed (more on this below) and even without a weather guard the seed stays fresh.
Large capacity, easy to fill and adjust the tension as necessary.
Looks nice hanging in the yard - not an eyesore like most feeders
I have this hanging in a tree and the squirrels don't bother it (knock on wood, but so far they have totally left it alone)
Cons:
At first, birds would not use it at all. I think when I first got it, I was putting a black oil sunflower and safflower mix in here, because that's what my cardinals like.... I have tons of bird activity in my yard and my other feeders were getting all the action. So, I switched up my seed blend for this feeder (currently using "Birdwatchers Banquet" by Royal Wing which I get at Tractor Supply.) If you're finding that your birds are not interested in this feeder, you might have to experiment with different types of feed.
The biggest issue with this feeder is that my cardinals won't have anything to do with it, even when I had their favorite seed in there.
(and I'm using the provided "Cardinal Ring")
It seems that the seed ports are quite deep, and small. Birds really have to stick their beaks inside to get at the seed. I'm suspecting that either cardinals can't fit their faces in there or they don't like to for whatever reason. Chickadees, finches and juncos don't have any problems and that's who I'm mainly feeding now in the Squirrel Buster. Which is fine, but we all know that cardinals are the ones we try to attract. They sit on it for a second and fly away.
They seem to only use my platform feeder with a tray where they have lots of room to sit and easy access to the food.
All in all, a really nicely constructed feeder that seems like it will last many years.
Just don't have your heart set on cardinals.

My squirrels made a few attempts. All they got was a merry-go-round ride on the cardinal ring. After just a day or two they have completely given up in dispirited disgust. I almost feel sorry for them. But they are such greedy pigs they brought this upon themselves. Meanwhile the birds are happy as can be. All the squirrels get now is the ground litter the birds throw down.
UPDATE
Ok, I've had this thing for close to a year and today, for the first time I've seen a Squirrel Einstein defeat it. Clever as hell, I have to admit, this big guy hangs upside down but defeats the weight sensitive ring by threading his tail into one of the holes so the door can't close. If that causes him any pain he doesn't show it. So now I wonder how long before he teaches the trick to his kids.
Has Effectively Busted Squirrels, in My Opinion

Great to install, dishwasher safe (confirmed), definitely a strong, quality feeder. My squirrels tried to get into it several times, and gave up. They now just hang out underneath, waiting for any dropped seeds. It's an expensive feeder, I know, but I'm glad I got it. It's going to last for years, it's well supported, and I think I would probably go through inferior feeders and end up paying the same price (or more) in the end. Also, I like that it's pretty easy to refill, once you get the hang of it.
I highly recommend the additional pole attachment, as it comes with an additional wire middle perch. I do wish this perch item was included with the feeder, but I like mounting the feeder on a pole anyhow.
NOTE: If you do mount on a pole, you can use "electrical conduit" from your hardware store. This is a metal pole that is normally used to run electrical wire through) and it's extremely cheap! It can be cut to size with a hacksaw, or they can possibly cut it for you there. I got enough pole length for two feeders for under five bucks.
So far, so good

This feeder was the first step in my move from a single platform feeder that was raided by squirrels and emptied by wind. I have had it up now for a couple of weeks; it took the local finches and blackbirds very little time to figure it out. A few days in I added the weather shield, which confused some visitors for a while, but again they figured it out.
We would get quite a few cardinals to the old feeder, and for a while I was worried that they would not take to this one. The first few days I spotted one investigate but not stay around...but we've now had four successful visits in the last two days, so it appears they have figured it out (I've left my old feeder up as well, but only putting a little seed in every couple of days, at least for a while...I'm hoping this tactic keeps the cardinals coming until they are comfortable with the new feeder).
The only birds that I normally get that I haven't seen get comfortable on this feeder are black-capped chickadees...but yesterday I put up a new Brome squirrel-proof peanut feeder, and the chickadees have enjoyed that instead.
I have yet to see a squirrel attempt to feed there. Normally when I'm home to see we let our dog chase them away. But at any rate we used to see them all the time on the platform feeder. I have seen a grackle unsuccessfully attempt it, though, and it pleased me greatly to see him fail.
UPDATE:
I had a chance to observe the feeder during the day, now that it's been up a couple of weeks. I have to say my concerns about the cardinals appear to be unfounded: just today I've had at least a half dozen visits, by both male and female cardinals. I've seen a squirrel now at least attempt to figure out how to get at the seed, but he has not made it down from the top of the cylinder yet.

I selected the Brome 1024 Squirrel Buster Plus 6"x6"x28" Wild Bird Feeder with Cardinal Perch because of the patented Seed Ventilation System that keeps the seed dry & avoids mildew & spoilage Brome 1024 Squirrel Buster Plus 6"x6"x28" Wild Bird Feeder with Cardinal Perch Ring and 6 Feeding Ports, 3qt/5.1lb Seed Capacity
LIKES:
1- Guaranteed Squirrel Proof
2- Completely adjustable weight required to shut the feeder openings
3- Seed Ventilation System keeps the seed dry & avoids mildew & spoilage - this is why I selected this Bird Feeder!
4- Dishwasher safe
5- East to assemble & disassemble for cleaning with NO TOOLS required!
6- Attractive appearance
7- Optional Cardinal Ring adds to the fun. All birds eat from one opening, then move clockwise to the next opening, as if they were at a banquet! It is hilarious to watch!
8- Adjustable aluminum spring loaded feet convert to Cardinal Ring supporters
9- Large capacity: 3 Qt / 5.1 # seed
10- Lifetime Warranty
DISLIKES:
1- Plastic construction (with Lifetime Warranty). I prefer cast aluminum construction, but the last feeder I had was cast and did not have the vent system. So the seed was full of mildew & the birds stayed away. The heavy duty plastic is well built; aluminum is just a personal preference.
2- The first feeder I ordered arrived cracked. Amazon Prime delivered a replacement in 2 days, I returned the cracked feeder, and this one is fine. The cardboard packaging is inadequate to protect this long, heavy feeder. I contacted Amazon today & sent a recommendation to the manufacturer through Amazon that they improve their packaging.
CONCLUSION:
This Brome 1024 earns 5 Stars! I ordered 2) more today & plan to trash the more expensive aluminum / clear feeders that no loner attract birds, even after a thorough cleaning.
AMAZING!!!! Life Changing.

We bought this great Brome Squirrel Buster "Plus" Bird Feeder (Model 1024) after the fantastic success we had with the smaller Brome Squirrel Buster "Standard" (Model 1057) which we had purchased previously. We love em BOTH! And the two Brome Feeders are now located near each other in our front yard just outside our formal living room's large bay window---welcoming the feathered visitors to our front yard. And the visitors keep coming!!
GOODBYE squirrels (they have not been able to beat either model, and have virtually given up even trying.) And a big HELLO to many many many more birds (who are flying in from everywhere to dine). Our front yard is now filled with beautiful Blue Jays, Cardinals, Woodpeckers, Doves, Finches, etc etc--but NO squirrels.
Truthfully, the exit of the squirrels is actually a LITTLE bit sad, since it is was great entertainment to watch the squirrels go through every amazing olympic-style gymnastic movement known to their species to try to reach the food--all ending in failure. One has to give them kudos however for being so persistent before realizing it was a losing effort, and just gave up. But with them gone, the colorful and gorgeous birds are even more willing to drop by to enjoy the gourmet food. So as they say, "It's a WIN-WIN."
We spend several hours each morning now in our Formal Living Room drinking coffee, and enjoying the beautiful view of the birds. It took a lot to pry us out of our Den parked dutifully in front of the TV, but we are now reconnecting with the Formal Living Room we had seldom used before. Sorry Kelly Ripa, but we are now taping your morning show for later viewing!! These hours of total relaxation with the birds and soft music just can't be beat.
Which model do we like best?? BOTH!! The large one obviously holds a lot more food, and can better accommodate the large Blue Jays, Cardinals, and Doves. And the finches and woodpeckers seem to like the smaller one better. But all sizes of birds actually go to either one. Thank you Brome for a great bird-feeder and for making our early mornings (and sometimes late afternoons as well) so wonderful.
