Best portable water filter available
by Glen E Thomas,Top Contributor: Camping (5 out of 5 stars)

I have owned backpacking water filters over the last 35 years. I like the plastic pump filters by first aid and msr and still own one of each. The squeeze filters are light and convenient and I own a few but I just don't like or trust them as far as durability goes. The katadyn pocket filter is not the lightest filter on the market at close to two pounds, not actually smaller otr lighter than the msr either. What this filter has going for it from my point of view is the extream build quality and durability. No plastic barbs to break off, no plastic parts in any critical area other than the body / tube and even that part is well made and actually overbuilt. With a 13000 gallon ceramic filter life if I get even half of that I will be happy. I see no inherent issues with this filter that other filters don't have. In freezing weather you will need to protect the filter from freezing. Any ceramic filter regardless of the brand will have an issue with freezing. One downside on that note is you will not be putting this filter in your pants pocket or jacket pocket. But again you can't pocket carry the first aid or msr filters either. No ceramic filter will eliminate viruses, if viruses are an issue you will need to chemically treat the water or boil over a flame. I added the charcoal katadyn add on filter to reduce the off taste of river water. Not totally necessary but a nice addition to this filter as it fits into the standard carry pouch with no problems. The ability to filter water is critical in my outdoor endeavors and I feel confident that this filter will last a lifetime.

I like the idea of life straws but it seems more ...

Used my friend's on two camping trips and decided I needed to buy one for myself. Whether you're camping or preparing for emergency, this could save you. I don't think it's enough to just have a lot of water stored up in your home. You never know what could happen to your supply and I consider water the #1 priority in my preparedness. The ability to go get more water when the faucet isn't working and the FEMA lines are too long is more important than how many rounds of ammunition you have.

There are some less expensive alternatives but I am unwilling to risk it for my #1 preparedness priority. I like the idea of life straws but it seems more convenient to me to be able to pump for a few minutes and have a few liters of drinking water wherever I want to take it. Plus this has a much longer lifespan.

Is this expensive?!?

Want a little extra piece of mind while hiking the backwoods? Want to know that in an emergency you can filter enough water for yourself and your family... or even to be able to provide relief for someone else who may be in their own crisis?

How about longevity of use?!?

What about weight? Want something lightweight for your camping gear, B.O.B or pack? Pounds equals pain right!?

What about quality and durability? Would you like a lifetime warranty that product?

Well thank Katadyn(again) for this little number!!

The Pocket is world renown for it's 5 star ratings across the board. This thing is an absolute beast when it comes to field filtration!!

So is this thing expensive? Not in my book... you don't wanna mess around when it comes to the second most important thing you, your children, or your pets might need. Just my opinion.
*Make sure you fully understand the use, cleaning and packing procedures before taking it out to use in the field the first time.

The absolute best filter I have used.

I used for a camping trip in Alabama. A creek ran right near where we camped at. The filter performed great. The water was mostly clean to start with but was able to filter about 4 gallons before needing to clean the filter. I was able to do that right by the creek and start filtering again in about 5 minutes. Worked great. All together I filtered about 10 gallons during the trip. When the pump becomes difficult, field strip the filter and clean it. I suggest always keeping one bottle of purified water in reserve for cleaning the filter. You do not want to clean the filter with unpurified water because of contamination.

Owned the Lifestraw, Sawyer, Lifesaver Bottle, and now the Katadyn Pocket Filter, and I must say, this Katadyn is my favorite.

Life Straw is compact, lightweight, and inexpensive, good for survival.

Sawyer is a good bang for the buck

Lifesaver Bottle filters out viruses as well, bit bulky and slow flowing, little pricey.

Katadyn Pocket Filter really is quality, good flow, simple and easy to fill up your water containers.
-It is expensive, but you are getting your hard earned cash out of it, because this filter is built strong, comes with a 20yr warranty, and water is one of the necessities needed to survive, why go cheap on your own safety and well being? It is a little heavy for a filter, but then again, when you really need water, are you going to trust your $20 plastic filter? Or are you going to trust you expensive aluminum filter. Ill carry the extra 1lb.

Sturdy, needs a charcoal taste filter

Great filter, but the flavor did need significant improvement. I purchased a Katadyn charcoal adapter and was not disappointed.

The plastic body leaves me a little hesitant to state it feels solid, but it truly does regardless of the flex when pumping water. The design makes it seem relatively simple to replace the plastic part if it ever were broken, but i wouldn't go out of my way to try it. The actual internal mechanism is quite solid.

It is a little heavy, but to be expected from a mostly metal filter that feels as reliable as this one.

Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter

Like most of us, we look at cost and quality.

As a paramedic and ex combat medic, throw in some recent trips to suspect areas. Having treated many people with stomach cramps to ...well... I wont go into it here, lets just say you dont want it. Water! quality water. I always have clean water. Whilst going through some countries, I found I was the only one not getting sick. My trick is treated even bottled water the same as swamp water (Almost) you just never know whose hands or where that bottle has been.

Okay. I wanted a top of the range product, hard wearing and just works! i was looking for tough and field cleanable. I was bored so I googled, youtubed and read articles. There was one clear winner with no close second.

This one.

Some of the articles on you tube are well done and that sold me.

I live in Australia, checked for the best price and, you know what! Amazon was not only the best price, the delivery beat my other US orders by a week.

Price, quality, reliability, speed of delivery Amazon won. Even Ebay was not even close, although i did see a fake unit out of Korea.

I spent 8 hours on this product, because, I am worth the effort and didnt want to get sick and spoil a trip just because I was drinking suspect water. Even clear water can make you very sick.

I hope my effort in writing this will save others time, money and effort. I am very happy with this product and service

So happy...

Just received and tested in my sink. The build quality is very, very nice. I had a couple of tiny issues... connecting the pre-filter to the rubber tube even with lubricant was very tight. I ended up heating the tube lightly with a flame and then it was much easier. Secondly, the opening on the pre-filter housing was too small to fit the tube and pre-filter so I enlarged it a couple of mm with a sharp knife. A perfect fit. The first liter was cloudy (as the manual says), ceramic dust, but after that, it cleared and the pump worked beautifully. I believe I will have this unit for many years. One tiny wish, If the output pipe was a few inches longer I'd have preferred that. Why, because it would make the placement of the filter and the output bottle a little more flexible.

The Pay for Camping SMOKIES were the Worst in 275 miles of trail water

Too Heavy, but kept me from getting sick on Appalachian Trail where idiots in U.S. Forestry Department do not clean water sources or where they place the PRIVY upstream of the water source. LOOK INSIDE THE PIPE. Ridge Runners do not clean nor replace the PVC pipes. The Pay for Camping SMOKIES were the Worst in 275 miles of trail water.

I have used one of these for years when hiking and camping. It also came in handy when we had a serious forest fire. For 4 days we told not to use the water till they can repair the damage. So I just put the tap water through my filter and had no problems with water to drink.
