Amazing light show!
by D. LACOY (5 out of 5 stars)

I bought this mostly for myself (note: I am 50). But I decided to let my kids use it as well. All I can say is WOW! The thing is amazing! I have only been using it for about an hour but you can make it do such a multitude of patterns and colors, it will blow you away. It is both mesmerizing and beautiful. My kids have found interesting ways to change the "wave forms" of the string by poking or holding it between their fingers.

As far as durability goes, it is all plastic but seems well made. They also include another string and it is replaced by loosening two screws. My guess is you could find a similar kind of string at a store. But is was nice of the company to include it just the same.

All I can say is if you like cool techy things then buy it!

Fun for the Kids
by E.Summers (4 out of 5 stars)

It's basically a string in the middle which rotates faster on one side then the other creating round shapes and you can change how fast it rotates, the colors of the light shining on it, and how fast the lights pulse. Really cool visual effects. I bought this for my 4 yr old son and he really likes it.

The greatest toy ever.

This toy is so fun! Great for kids or adults. Throw on some music, and turn off the lights and you have your own personal light show. You have so much control over the way it works and you end up with such a variety of cool shapes, lights and colors. It's hard not to get "strung out"!

Stringin' It is unusual and fascinating
by Speech Woman (5 out of 5 stars)
November 25, 2009

I bought this toy for use in my job with children with disabilities. The toy is simple to operate and fascinating to most people. It is safe and relatively durable. Kids and adults enjoy making the patterns change by adjusting the switches and arms and by touching the moving string. The toy does need a darker room to be enjoyed. Also, kids with long hair should avoid getting hair caught in the spinning string. Since I've had Stringin' It at work, several adults have expressed an interest in purchasing the toy.

Undocumented Effects/Features
by Nature Guy (5 out of 5 stars)
November 28, 2013

Long story short, I had one of the very first originals from the early 1980's (doesn't run on batteries, analog controls, no LEDs, etc.), and a friend always wanted one. Never could find those again. A few years back I got one of these newer models for him on a close-out sale. I found this LED-lights model (also now discontinued) has some hidden settings back then. I recently had to figure out those settings again to show someone and I couldn't find a page online I posted of a "how to" about it, that page is long gone. Amazon seems to hang onto old reviews. So ... find your "Stringin' It" in the back of your storage somewhere, dust it off, give it a new set of batteries, and try some of these things:
(here's my original documentation I wrote about it for that friend)

Pattern Select Button:

Quick Press (4 options): Cylcle LED Sequence between RGB, CMY (2 of each color), RYGCBM shifting blend, All On
2 Second (LONG) Press (2 options): Pause/Release Colors & Pattern Changes

Pulse Control Button (with the undocumented sequence-speed feature):

Quick Press (4 options): Light Each LED Cycle for 1/4th, 1/2, 3/4ths, or Full Strobe (Flash Speed Control Dial) Cycle
2 Second (LONG) Press (2 options): Enable/Disable LED Sequencing Speed Selection.
Usage: Hold for 2 seconds. This engages the sequencing speed selection, it will automatically increase in 8 steps. When they are sequencing at the speed you desire, press and hold for 2 seconds again to stop the automatic speed increase, or press the Pattern Select button to stop this automatic speed ramping. If using the Pattern Select to choose the sequencing speed (stop it from automatically increasing) this will change the pattern select option too. You will have to press it 3 more times to return to your originally selected RBG, CMY (2 LEDs lit each), Blended, or All On pattern.

The best way to learn how these options all affect each other, it to get a semi-fast single string-wave (one or two stable string-waves), set the Pattern Select option to sequence between Green, Red, then Blue mode. Set the Pulse Mode to 1/4th, 1/2, or 3/4ths (not ALL on a this point). Adjust the strobe speed so the colors are stationary on the string's wave-form. Use all the above button sequences to see how they create the various lighting effects across the spinning string. Once you see and know how they all relate, it's easy to reproduce them again. I.e. You'll know how to get there again.

Added Bonus:

Stringin'-It Special Sequence Syncing Lighting Effect -- (Directions For Dummies, because he couldn't understand the physics explanation that I first gave him)
1. Start with Stringin-It off, then turn on in manual mode. (starting from default settings)
2a. Set "Motion Speed" to zero. 2b. Set "Flash Speed" to zero.
3. Press Pattern Select one short press. Lights should now be slowly flashing from G, B, R, and repeating.
4. Press "Pulse Control" 1 short presses. This puts it in full light-cycle. Lights are on the longest duration.
5. Press and HOLD "Pulse Control" for 3 seconds. This engages the undocumented "Sequence Speed" select.
6. Watch lights until they are a blur, constantly lit, count to 4 FULL seconds, then press and HOLD "Pulse Control" for 2 seconds to lock in that highest sequencing speed. If you miss the highest speed the sequencing will just flip around to its slowest speed again, then wait until it's fastest again. It may take a few attempts to lock in the highest sequencing rate because two of the highest sequencing rates appear identical to the human-eye.
7. Press "Pulse Control" 1 short press, to put the pulse width in 1/4th cycle mode.
8. Turn the "Flash Control" to its highest setting. Now SLOWLY decrease the speed of the "Flash Speed" dial until some of the lights seem to go out completely. This is where the Flash Speed and Sequencing speed have hit on a harmonic of either one.
9. Play with the Pattern Select button (RGB, CYM, or Blend, but not All On), the Pulse Control button (1/4th, 1/2, 3/4th, but not Full Cycle) to obtain different effects, while SLOWLY changing the Speed Control dial never too far from those sync spots.

String motors and other controls will draw power and you'll lose the LED's sync as you change those things so carefully readjust that Flash Speed control dial to compensate and put it back into the slightly-out-of-1:1 sync modes again.

And ... IT'S JUST THAT SIMPLE! :-)

I found it would do this only after I said to myself, "Hey, I wonder... if I sync strobe and sequence rates, then they should act like the resonance of 2 same-note guitar strings tuned slightly out of phase." and they did! With very careful adjustment.
(Note: This is why I give this a 5-stars for "educational". A child (or anyone) can learn much about the physics of harmonics and waveforms with this thing with enough attention and investigation.)

You're going to want one!

I bought this in 2006 off the shelf 20 bucks. It had the best quality and was hours of fun! It had a port to plug in AC adapter to save batteries and many modes that can be adjusted so many ways! I loved it, sadly I only have the box now as mine was swiped and was hoping to buy another.

okay toy, some caviets...
by bandazar (4 out of 5 stars)

I bought this toy on a whim since it seems so good in advertisements (actually I bought it at the local Spencers since it was the cheapest place I could find it - even cheaper than online discount stores). The toy is bigger than I thought it would be, that's the biggest complaint about it.

Doesn't contain any batteries or adaptor, so you're going to have to buy batteries for it. I did notice a 6V adaptor plug for it on the bottom though - not sure if it works since I haven't tried it.

Seems like there are several screen savers on the windows programs that are about as exciting as this toy (and probably free too), so not sure if I can really recommend this toy if you have a computer and an internet connection.

The string action is okay, the string frequently hits the black bars, and the light projection projects lights up to the ceiling, lighting up the room a little bit. Sometimes you can get really neat patterns and it can even possibly teach you some things about frequency, light, etc...

Despite it's fun and the fact that I'm giving it 4 stars, I can't really recommend this item because of the fact that you can get screensavers that are about as fun as this - unless you've seen this in person and really want it.

Price Gouging

This is a great toy and a lot of fun to play with, there is no way you should pay what they are currently selling for on Amazon. Google the name of the product and you will find one for a third of the cost of the one listed here. Maybe by the time you read this they are more reasonably priced on Amazon, which would be great! Just fair warning so you don't spend more money than you need to. But the item itself is phenomenal.

Stringin' It
by C. Doucette (5 out of 5 stars)

Like the other customer who reviewed this item, I bought this toy on a whim. I had not seen any advertising for it, but it looked interesting.
I bought batteries and as soon as I got home installed them.
I turned it on, and I'm almost ashamed to say I then spent the most fascinated hour and a half of my adult life in the dark, playing.
Someone needs a life, huh?

Anyway, I got my husband hooked on the toy, too. He went out and bought an adapter for it (it sucks up batteries).
I strongly urge anyone who is easily amused with shiny items and pretty lights (almost everyone I know!) to go out and get one.
I've reccommended this item to many friends, and all have loved it.
