It covers widely-used focal lengths from 200mm to 500mm and has a large aperture of F2.8 throughout the entire zoom range. This lens can be used to create amazing image expression with various types of photography such as astrophotography, portraits, wildlife, sports. SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass and three ELD (Extraordinary Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for all type of aberrations. The super multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting and provides high image quality from the extremely large aperture. The lens hood, designed exclusively for this lens, blocks out extraneous light. The dedicated Li-ion battery BP-21 is used to power the zooming and AF operation. This battery is built in the lens barrel. For the convenience of the photographer, focusing distances and focal lengths can be viewed on the lens' built-in LCD panel.

Not for street photography
by Alexander Gage (5 out of 5 stars)
June 23, 2018

Great lens, however do not buy for street photography unless you are into the "street photography from your bedroom" genre.

On the street I find the lens draws a lot of attention despite the camouflage green exterior. Rather than "capturing the decisive moment" I have found myself face down on the street, handcuffed, and vigorously searched by the authorities far more often than I would have liked.

With hindsight I would have bought a smaller lens, and a nice car, for the money.

Marvelous lens that'll give you a journey of a lifetime!
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

I was an amateur photographer, and for a long I time I've had enormous dreams of being pro - crowds-cheering-my-name-asking-for-my-autograph-kind-of-pro. That's right, I wanted to score big. Finally, I decided it was time to upgrade from my iPhone to some serious equipment. After restless nights of searching, I found out about this lens, and boy oh boy, I knew right away that this luscious green baby is THE lens for me! So I took the plunge and bought this lens with money I scraped together from some scholarships, from my grandparents' will, and from twenty years of donating plasma every month.

So after getting this lens, in its gloriously green MINT condition, I couldn't wait to stick it on my refurbished Nikon and try it out for some photos around town. Now, this thing may be just a tad heavier than my iPhone, but I'm a pretty sturdy guy, and I didn't mind slinging it on my shoulder strolling down the street feeling like a real pro. Downside is people started to stare and point at me, and some even started bolting down the street when I tried to take pictures. Capture the moment they say, so I took some *nice* pictures of people running. Gorgeous photos! TACK sharp. I could literally count every single strand of DNA on peoples' hair when I pixel-peep my photos. Unfortunately, a while later, sirens blazed down. At least 6 police cars raced up, surrounded me, and blared at me to "Put my hands up in the air and drop all weapons".

So I had a rough start with the lens. I had been feeling a bit bummed that I couldn't use it for my everyday shooting in broad daylight. Well, turns that I didn't need to, because I found out that, with the amazing reach of this lens, I could take wedding photos over in L.A. from New York without even putting my pants on and leaving the house. What's more, I can see Russia from my backyard. (Gorgeous landscapes!). AND, I recently saw that Jupiter actually has *70* moons and not *69*, thanks to this len's phenomenal low-light capabilities. (NASA, you missed one).

With this lens, I've taken photos that most people could only dream of. This lens is truly in a class of its own!

No need to travel for photography anymore.

I am delighted with this lens and I am actually saving a lot of money with this purchase. I use to travel to Central and South America several times per year for bird photography. Now I can just get them all from the roof of my building in Los Angeles. Awesome!

good entry level lens
by Colin H. (5 out of 5 stars)

Now let me tell you, THIS is a lens. You thought that $700 piece of trash you just bought is going to get the job done? Wrong. I didn't know what life was until I spent 94% of my annual income on this beautiful green beast (homeless now, no familiy, help).

I'll admit, I'm not a professional. I've been using the Gameboy Camera as my primary piece of hardware for the past 6 years, and I felt it was finally time to move up. So I took the leap and bought this hunk of metal as well as a high quality, single use, Kodak 35mm camera (with flash, of course). That's when I ran into my first problem, however. The flash thingy couldn't get around this howitzer barrel. I was in luck though, I managed to jury rig an old U-boat periscope to reflect the flash over this titan and haven't had any issues since.

PROS:
-Green
-INCREDIBLE zoom. I accidentally dropped this behemoth and the camera pointed up and took a picture. I discovered a new exoplanet around AD Leonis 16 lightyears away.
-You can see PAST the observable universe with this tube.
-Green
-They cancelled the James Webb after seeing me in action.
-The green adds a level of camouflage. When you're in the middle of a warzone outside of Vang Hai, Cambodia, you HAVE to be stealthy. The green paint COMPLETELY eliminates the lens glare. I've evaded 14 snipers like it was nothing. I've since been contacted by the CIA, FBI, Viet Cong, NSA, Seal Team 6, Costco, and the SIS.
-Cheap
-Doubles as mortar tube if needed

Cons
-Sometimes you zoom in to far and accidentally take a peak at the quantum dimension. Spooky stuff man.
-The green camoflauge can make it hard to find if you set it down in a field. I'd get some if flares just in case.
- You're required by law to have a flashing red light on top of this thing when pointing it up so aircraft don't hit it.

f2.8 at 500mm WOW!
by DeWitt (1 out of 5 stars)
February 6, 2019

I was in dire need of a lens that would deliver f2.8 at 500 mm and I thought this was just the ticket. imagine getting Bokeh from the north rim of the Grand Canyon. Only problem was, the only way I can carry it around is strapping it to the top of my Jeep. This worked fine until I drove to the airport to pick up a friend. I was immediately surrounded by police, sheriffs, FBI, CIA, Homeland Security and every agency in the country, pulled from my Jeep, thrown to the ground and had cuffed with a .45 at the back of my head. My friend took a cab home and now I have a slightly used Sigma lens for sale if anyone is interested.

Doesn't work with iphone X !
by iliadz (5 out of 5 stars)
December 20, 2018

I bought this as the current iphone is very limited with its optical zoom, and digital just wasn't cutting it. Little did I know this lens does NOT support the newest iphone. I somewhat blame this on myself, for not reading through all the reviews, but in my defense, I did not see any reviews specifically stating it couldn't be used on the iphone, and there is nothing in the specifications that has any type of consumer warning whatsoever that specifically states this either. I'll share the blame some with Apple as each year they seem to come out with some new interface that makes old attachments obsolete (see my review about the 3.5 mm headphone jack not working with the wireless interface of the new iphone for example). Plus Apple's website does NOT say anything about NOT supporting this lens.

Why did I give it five out of five stars you ask? I sent my concerns to theonion.com consumer protection division, and they are currently working on my behalf to rectify the situation. In their last e-mail they notified me that not only will the 2019 model iphone work with the lens, a new add on module will actually support wireless connectivity (something my 3.5mm heapdhones WON'T!!).

Great Images but lots of Recoil

It's a good lens but watch the recoil; you do not want to standing behind this lens when it goes off.

I'm on my third one, and with bankruptcy in the rearview mirror, looking for # 4
by MMM (5 out of 5 stars)
January 17, 2019

With each purchase I've had to go into bankruptcy and wait seven years to buy the next one but now after nearly a lifetime I'm shopping for number four to complete my collection.

At first I thought one would be enough but I always felt off balance walking around with it hanging from my neck on a camera strap. And people kept looking at me funny. Obviously they thought I could not possibly be a professional with just one camera and one of these giant lenses. So that led me to my second purchase.

Having two did give me a bit more balance from left to right but not front to back. Still I was getting lots of strange looks and more than one law enforcement officer questioned me about my sanity and motives.

Getting a third giant green lens had to be the answer. Like a good tripod I was more balanced and having one attached to each of my cameras hanging around my neck was really doing great things for my core and calves. In fact I realized there is no reason to ever go to a gym again. I just carry these around for 45-60 minutes and I'm nearly having a heart attack by the time I've walked around for a bit.

Now everyone must know I'm a real professional photographer because I have 4 Giant green lenses the size of medium sized child hanging around my neck. I've added a monopod to each one with a Segway unicycle wheel to help me get around and man do I look cool now. Everyone stares at me in awe of my professionalness and with my four giant green lenses, I'm sure they are as impressed as when I sit at a red light and repeatedly rev my engine.

Next I think I need a potable 12 foot parabolic umbrella!
