When you need this, not sure you want a cheap toolby Tom (5 out of 5 stars)

Just to clear things up, the version with the pick has a blade made in Finland, the one without had a blade made in Poland, both assembled in USA. They are indistinguishable. The welds and castings are the same. The bolt that holds the assembly together is longer on this one, to accommodate the pic. This is a very robust tool. Keep in mind that when digging with the pic folded, it increases the volume of the area your hand holds on to. This is good for me. This is designed for people who need to get into the ground, fast.
Not a Gerber product.

Received some cheap knockoff, NOT the Gerber E Tool that I ordered. Serrated edge was dull and rounded, wouldn't cut hot butter. There was a note in the box from a previous buyer that stated he had returned item for the exact same reason. Also this had no pick.
The only Gerber product I'm happy with

The only Gerber product that worth the money and probably the best E-tool you can get.
Don't waste your money on those sloppy Chinese aluminum garbage that have threaded handles already got two different ones and returned them, also they were around the same price as this one.
Be aware you "can" fit this one on a rubber military issued pouch but since this one is slightly thicker they grommets won't close so, you can place another set of grommets an inch higher and it'll be perfect

I keep one of these in each of my cars. They are not the best for digging in hard packed dirt or clay or rocks, but they ROCK in the snow. Hefty enough to put some muscle behind, stout enough for prying or using the attached pick like a pick, and it folds up quite neatly. I have used for digging out stuck vehicles in the snow more than once, very handy tool to have along.
Highly suggest purchasing the nylon molle case which is available here on Amazon.
Must have utility for anyone who enjoys the outdoors

Tough and can handle any situation with ease! Packs nicely and we take everywhere in our vehicles and into the outdoors. Alaska has some hard granite when digging can become almost impossible and this shovel is hardcore! Folds easily and easy to carry on a backpack.
Good product for what it's intended.

Given its inherent limitations due to size, this spade is very well made and I'd expect would last for a long time. I've seen cheap Chinese copies that are so bad I wouldn't trust them further than I could throw them, but this is not one of those. Very positive and solid locking action, well engineered handle with very little flex.
Folding Shovel

It's Gerber's re-inventing the folding shovel of Vietnam days. The shovel edge when received had a unfinished bevel to it. Has a pick but I not sure it's effectiveness, back end of shovel is designed so you can use your foot help dig which a lot of these type shovels do not have. Handle allows a good grip. I feel this to be a good survival gear.
Almost perfect.

This has the potential to be perfect, but needs two minor improvements: 1) A clip-on sheath for the serrated side, and 2) A more sure locking mechanism (maybe a red dot, or at least better instructions). Otherwise it has an incredibly high quality feel to it and folds up ingeniously.
Needs a case

For the cost of this tool it should come with a cover. The edges are very sharp and you need some protection from getting cut. I had to order a separate case for it.
An E-Tool With Bite

I needed to replace an old, Coghlan's e-tool that long since broke. I decided that I wanted a sturdy e-tool that will not fail in the field.
I did some research and discovered that Gerber makes an e-tool that is issued to the Marine Corp. I figured that they would make a good civilian e-tool.
I was right.
This e-tool is very durable. I took it out to a campsite that me and friend were clearing out and this tool did a fine job. It moved dirt/rocks very well, the spike chopped through roots with ease, and the serrated edge cut through small saplings and branches as well as my small handsaw.
When folded, this e-tool has a small profile (slightly larger than the size of the spade).
About the only downsides is that it is a bit on the heavy side (but that's due to using a carbon steel spade) and does not come with a sheath/pouch. Although, this pouch fits it perfectly:

I would recommend this e-tool for anyone who needs a serious digging tool that can do more than just entrench.
