I have an older home with box gutters. The last time I was on the roof, the ladder moved as I tried to get off the roof which spooked me. A distant neighbor had a serious accident as well. As a result, I usually pay a roofer to clean the gutters. Unfortunately, they can take several weeks to come out and do the cleaning and I am an impatient person.
On our house, the gutters are 40' from the ground, so there isn't a convenient way to use the looj from the ground. I can access the gutters from the roof via dormers so my method of using the looj was to tie a rope to the looj and drive it into the gutters that were 3 or 4 feet below me.
Prior to looj'ing, I had 3 main problems around the downspouts. Roofing companies put small wire traps over the gutter to keep the downspouts from clogging. Three of these were clogged at the trap. The first one was relatively straight forward although I kept getting caught on the trap. Usually backing up and going forward would resolve the problem, but frequently I needed to use the rope with forward motion on the looj to get it to figure out how to get around the trap. This worked relatively well and after 20 minutes I had cleared the gutter. Unfortunately, I had also worked the trap free and had no way to retrieve it.
I moved to the second gutter to repeat the process. This one was pretty easy although, again, I had to convince the looj to bypass the gutter trap.
During the cleaning of the third gutter, I lost the auger twice. Luckily, I was able to drag it back using the looj and retrieve it and resinstall it.
During the cleaning of the fourth gutter, I lost the auger once and eventually lost one of the treads. I was unable to retrieve the tread, so I need to go to irobot.com and order another two. It sure would be nice if Amazon carried replacement parts.
I rate the Looj about a 3. Outside of a human going up on the roof (and the $150ish price tag that comes with it, the looj is the best thing out there, but it's not without its issues.
It does the job!

The previous owners had not cleaned the gutters in our new home for well over a year. And a few days before we received the Looj it had rained heavily. I figured stuffed, wet gutters would give the Looj more than it could handle. But that was not the case. The "little guy" performed absolutely beautifully. It got out the dried leaves, the wet leaves, the small sticks, and the accumulation of grit from the roof shingles. It turned what would have been a miserable three plus hour job by hand into a fun and painless 40 minutes. Note that for tough clogs like this you cannot simply have the Looj plow through. You must work it forward and backward as the directions suggest. It takes a bit to get the hang of the technique but once you do it works fine. I don't know why some of the other reviewers had trouble, but from my experience, THE LOOJ WORKS!
Saved my life... and my gutters

I procured an iRobot Looj to tackle my gutters that get clogged every year with debris from the Pines, and Hardwoods of Oregon. My house is ideal for this product it as my roof is nearly 30 feet off the ground, and the gutters are perfectly straight. I can't use a ladder safely as the property is on a steep & uneven slope (dangerous and soft). Also, the Pitch of the roof is too steep to get at them from above. It is really a life endangering process, cleaning my gutters.
Over the years Ive tried differing extension ladders with levelers etc... it never goes well. I've hired gutter cleaning services in the past, but they eventually refuse to clean them more than once, as the time it takes to move and set ladders is not worth their $$$ (due to the hill I live on, it ends up taking all day for what they think is a simple job).
Anyhow - I found the iRobot Looj and thought "What do I have to lose?" The cost was less than 1/2 of what I'd pay to find yet another cleaning service.
Well, I can say that It worked like a charm today. Got the whole job done in about 25 minutes... and I am still alive, which I probably wouldn't be if I tried to do it by hand again. It did struggle with one section where a LONG NEEDLE pine sits above my roof --- but it was able to burrow under and lift up the debris enough to where I could push it away with a broom from above while it augured (without having to get near the edge... which is dangerous).
All the other leaves: Maple, Holly, short needle pine, it got out no issue. I think if I run it monthly on the section with the long-needle pine, and keep it maintained it'll have more success. Those long needles were badly mounded up 1/2 on the roof line... that tree is just a mess.
It'd give it 5 stars... but there were a few times that I had to move the remote about to get a signal as the Looj got more than 20 feet away. It seems like they are trying to use the gutter as an antennae... since this new model removes the flexible one. Maybe if they had an extendible antenna on the handheld remote it'd help. I think they need to work on that just a bit still. It is, however, manageable.

Purchased: November, 2012
Used: November: 2012
Application: 40 FT of standard aluminum gutter
Results: AWESOME!!!!!!!!
Tips: I attached a 1/8" 45 LB nylon cord to the belt clip loop at the back of the unit as a safety line in the event that the Looj was stuck. This helped tremendously. I also used a small NiteZe stainless steel S-Biner to attach the cord to the loop. The Looj cleaned the gutter "broom clean" in about 15 minutes.
You may see the Looj try to flip itself. If it does flip on its side or upside down, just follow the directions, and it will quickly right itself. Also, you can use the nylon cord to break the Looj free if it gets stuck, or help it move back and forth. You will have to retract the cord though as the Looj moves backwards towards home (you).
All in all, I would give it a six if I could. No more clogged gutters or inconsistent contractors for me! I will definitely upgrade to the 300 Series Looj when this one bites the dust.
Needs a better battery-can flip over

First let me say that the iRobot is a great tool that saves you time and effort. I got the one with only one battery, so if you have quite a bit of gutter length I recommend you get at least two batteries. Also...not having a charge light indicator seems strange to me. Overall, it's a nice tool that needs a couple tweaks to really be a great tool. Mine also kept cutting out/stalling when I was using it even after a full charge. It also could use a little more range with the remote. Mine stopped working at around 25 feet. Other remote cars, etc seem to have better range...I would think they could design this to have more than 25 ft range. Some of my gutter lengths are right at 30 ft.
Again...it really helped me on the very tall sections of my house....nice job iRobot. Just make those changes and you'll have a better tool.
Worked great for a while,

Worked great for a while then stopped backing up, so I'd have to go get it! Great if you have long straight runs. Prone to flip overs bur it stays in the gutter and you can usually drive your way out of them.,
Great idea but doesn't decrease work

This is a great idea for a robot. I recently put gutters on my two story home which is shaded by a giant tree. After 3 months of Springtime leaf shedding, I saw that I needed to clean the gutters so I thought Looj would be better than using my hands and moving the ladder every 5 feet.
When unboxing the Looj it looked pretty well made. After charging the battery for 16 hours, I climbed my 30ft ladder and had to scoop out a spot for the Looj in my gutters. It worked well for a couple feet but hit a dense spot of leaves and started climbing out of the gutter. After reversing the auger direction and continuously trying to break up the pile of leaves, I had no luck and had to move the ladder over to clear it by hand. At this time, the battery cover for the remote fell off and got lost in my yard for a while, which was very annoying. After finally finding the cover and batteries which fell out, I couldn't get the cover to stay put so had to continuously apply pressure (I guess I could have gone inside and taped it shut). For the less dense areas of leaves I was successful in getting the Looj to clean the gutters. However, when it hit more dense areas, the Looj would stop traveling and its auger would stop as if the motor overheated. I say that because it would work fine after waiting about 20 seconds.
With the battery cover refusing to stay latched and the Looj's inability to cut through dense leaves without me having to reposition my ladder, I don't think the Looj will be worth the money. I also have reliability concerns with the rubber tracks rubbing against sharp parts within my gutters. I would rather have spent the money on a lightweight mulching blower/vacuum (Toro Super Recycler) with extension tubes, which is what I will do. That way I won't have to clean up leaves either.
Great for me

The Looj works great for me. I have had zero performance related problems and am on my third gutter cleaning. The first cleaning was shortly after I bought the house and the gutters had not been cleaned in years. The Looj threw out leaves, mud, and sticks with reckless abandon. The only negative is that it will not fit in all gutters. It works great on my house but the supports inside the gutters on my garage were installed too low for the Looj to navigate. Also, as I hope is obvious, it sprays everything in your gutters out into the air. Stay upwind if you can.
IT GOES ZIP WHEN IT MOVES AND POP WHEN IT STOPS AND WHIRR WHEN IT STANDS STILL...

My reference here is to the wonderfully appropriate Tom Paxton children's song "The Wonderful Toy". The song's final verse concludes, "I'll never know just what it does and I guess I never will".
The company behind the The LOOJ 125 (AKA my "Wonderful toy") is iROBOT, the creator of the truly wonderful ROOMBA Robot Vacuum. The ROOMBA is an astonishing device that works beautifully. The LOOJ 125, on the other hand is equally astonishing, but simply doesn't work all that well --at least not with my Cape style house in Upstate New York. I live in a wooded area that literally rains leaves on my roof in November.
Thanks to AMAZON's cordial return policy, I figured that the LOOJ 125 was worth a test drive. If it did the job, it would be a keeper! If not, it was worth the try. After all, this nifty device would literally pay for itself in the first leafy season alone. I had big expectations for The little Robot that Could.
The LOOJ is beautifully packaged as a hi-end piece of electronics. It assembles in minutes and resembles a micro farm tractor more that a hi-tech tool. The concept here is that the little tractor will glide through your gutters while its spinning auger devistates your soggy leaves in minutes.
The immediate revelation upon firing up the LOOJ 125 is the fact that you still have to climb up a ladder to precarious heights- not once, but for each gutter of the house. In theory, the chances of breaking your neck are far lessened, but not eliminated. My advice to Senior Citizens is this- hire a day laborer for a few bucks and leave the ladder climbing to the young. After all, gutter cleaning is not rocket science.
To some extent, the LOOJ worked properly on its maiden voyage through my leaf-infested gutter. I chose the deck gutter because it was the smallest and lowest on my property.
At the push of TWO buttons (one for the tractor and one for the auger) the leaves went flying away from the house and onto the property below. Along with the leaves the device stirred up a black oily gunk that left quite a mess on the wooden deck stairs, as well as my new leather jacket. Better on my property and person than in the gutter, right?
Here's where things got really sticky. About five feet into the job, my new little tractor stopped. This, I assumed was a safety precaution to prevent the little robot from zipping off to some unreachable corner of the house. The instructions suggest that you hold the transmitter in contact with the gutter (assuming it is metal) to extend the radio range. Imagine this over age reviewer reaching out on one foot to touch the metal part. Thank goodness I was only standing on a step-ladder.
Off the LOOJ went again...until it let out a grinding moan and stopped for good.
Long story short- I tried the "back and forward technique". I soon discovered that the little tractor had flipped over in the gutter, effectively reversing the forward/backward controls. Eventually the little LOOJ stopped out of range and I could not reach it.
Particularly embarrassing were the snickers of my neighbor's gardener day workers who were observing the whole debacle and undoubtedly taking bets on who would give up first- your out-of-shape reviewer or the rather loud and lame toy I had let loose on my roof.
I must point out that the LOOJ 125 is the least expensive gutter cleaners offered by iROBOT. There are two more expensive models that might have fared better. I leave that experiment to you. I should also point out the my little LOOJ is now stuck with a dead battery in the gutter and in need of a rescue mission.
It is with great regret that I will now return my little household experiment from whence it came- Amazon.com.
Please do not let my personal experience sour your opinion of the iROBOT brand. My AMAZON purchase of the ROOMBA 440 continues to amaze and delight me.
In conclusion, the iROBOT LOOJ 125 turned out to be a wonderful toy. As Tom Paxton wrote, "I still don't know just what it does and I guess I never will".

We had to return the iRobot. It worked perfectly, under optimal conditions. Our gutters are not perfectly straight and some areas are narrow, due to the installer driving the spikes in too far, so it would get stuck in the narrow areas. Otherwise, it sped right along and threw the leaves right out. Some people complained that it was messy. We found that the leaves landed in a straight line about two feet out from the house. On the driveway, we just swept them up and in the grass, they were chopped by the lawn mower. You could put a tarp down to catch them, also. To me it beats trying to clear the gutters while on a ladder. If we ever have our gutters replaced, we'll get the larger size gutters and I will purchase this product, again.
