Fanastic sculpting compound for just about any project.by RustyMike (5 out of 5 stars)

Let me preface this by saying, I absolutely hate *Regular Sculpey*; it's way too soft and doughy, it sticks to wooden tools, it tends to want to spring back when nudging details, and it's rubbish for modeling detailed miniatures (even at a 10"-12" scale)...
Having said that, aside from being able to bake your sculpt in a consumer-grade oven to harden, *Super Sculpey* is nothing like Regular Sculpey. It has a medium density that can be softened a bit if you work the clay in your hands. When using tools, it feels a lot like carving a wax surface: the clay holds what you add or subtract from the forms, impressions don't "pinch" or "drag" the clay, sharp edges are easy to create without a hassle, and overall the clay feels very controllable.
It feels like a hybrid between moldable wax and plastilina. It can be firm enough to carve, but, if you need to blend new clay into a sculpt, a bit can be softened and used like an epoxy to attach the new part. This method allows a very smooth blend, secure bond, and eventually the softer bit will become more firm again. That's just a method I've found that works best for me, but it isn't necessarily the best or only way; you'll find that the clay is really very intuitive and easy to work with.
One of my favorite things about this compound is that it will always bond to itself. Even if you've baked a piece, you can add new clay to it, bake it again, and it will hold together beautifully. Knowing this, I like to build up certain underlying forms in my sculpt (like bones for example), bake at a fraction of the time to harden these forms just enough to hold their shape. On average I bake pieces like that in a preheated oven for about 5 minutes (max). That gives the clay plenty of stability, and I can still bake it again when I'm finished with the whole sculpt.
Anyway... This is a great sculpting compound for any skill or experience level. I would almost recommend this over any other option for a beginner. This clay is closer to what you want to be using to do quality detailed sculpts. I can't say that about the softer doughy stuff out there. To me, that stuff feels more like a toy to mess around with, whereas with something like Super Sculpey you have a compound that can handle a lot of intricate detailing and still be pliable enough to easily shape forms.
If you're a serious beginner (you haven't sculpted much or ever, but you plan to really dive in and give it a serious shot) then try something like this. You can reuse the clay if you don't bake it, it doesn't harden if you leave it out, it's super easy to work with, and you can bake your best creations to harden and paint them. It's not messy at all either, which can be a good thing for some people.
*Sculpey-Firm (grey) is good as well, and you can mix the two*.

Love it! I was used to using $6 Original Sculpey from WalMart, and had thought that sculpting would require much more practice...nope! This is not sticky and holds its shape better than the white beginner's clay. After hours of working on something, it left hardly any noticable residue. Cant wait to buy more!

I love this stuff. You can sculpt just about anything with this. I even sculpted more sculpey, so I didn't have to buy more. Need more sculpey? Sculpt it! Need new shoes? Sculpt it! Need a gf? Scu- Oh, um. Nevermind. Great for sculptures and sculpting sculpts.
Workable clay, but tough for beginners.

This pack of clay came in a rectangular block. It was difficult to work with, especially if you are trying an art project with a little one. The texture was harder than expected, but perhaps experts would say it is normal. You have to warm up small chunks in your hands by rolling them before you can shape them. That said, we were able to make a bee specimen out of it. I would recommend to paint the clay before baking it for fifteen minutes. Then add the gloss after baking.
Fresh and perfect product thank you!

Hamper girl here!..Love how even my 2nd order came with this year's date on package 18 ____code for 2018this means it is Fresh!..and soft easy to work with. I went to Michaels craft store to buy and they had very little variety to buy. Not saying they were sold out. I'm saying very little shelf space some clay was dated a year old on shelf! So fyi...check the package for date code. You want one from this year not previous year. Thank you Amazon for supplying fresh clay😍😃❤😉shared a funny pic of just how easy out if the box it was to work with😃...update *** just reordered more..thank you to the driver for handing it to me. Impressed by his nice manners .And not just leaving at door.

I ordered Super Sculpey for a school project. It arrived very quickly and in good condition. The clay comes in small boxes and, depending on what you're sculpting, it may not seem like a lot. I needed to make a larynx model and ordered 5 boxes to be on the safe side. I only used 2.
The clay is very easy to work with. You should play with it a bit to make it a bit softer since it's pretty stiff in the box.
If you're making something big or too thick you may want to "bulk it up" as the box says to avoid cracking or it not hardenig well.
Being the Sculpey newbie that I am, one thing I didn't know is that this type of clay doesn't completely harden in the oven. The first time I made my model, I put it in the oven and after 15 mins it was still soft, so I left it in and kept checking it but it never got hard. Eventually my model burned and I shut the oven off. After it cooled, it was completely hard.
THAT was when I realized it hardens as it cools. So, by the time I went to heat up my second model, I put it in the oven for 15-20 minutes, shut off the oven and let it cool. My model was perfectly fine and hardened well. So keep in mind, you might not want to keep it in the oven too long if you don't want it to burn.
Overall, this clay worked perfectly for me, aside from my own mistake. I would defintely recommend it.

Such an easy product to work with. I've used almost the entire block building fairy accessories-stones, flowers, the Prince" fairy door, a manatee, etc. I'll order more soon to always have handy. I prefer the neutral shade so that I can paint to personalize but, may end up with other colors as I grow my fairy garden.
Meh...at first...

This product came to me in a small plain cardboard box wrapped in bubblewrap without any instructions for baking or any tips on anything at all. No Super Sculpey box, and no instructions, which really bothers me since I paid a nice chunk of money (for me anyway) for this. I'm assuming it is just a chunk cut from some sort of massive bulk block. Since I've never had Sculpey before, I can only assume it is what it is supposed to be, and that it is in fact Sculpey and not some off-brand whatever. It is a light tan color, the texture seems nice, and there are no signs of drying.
UPDATE: It has been a few months, and I have since had a chance to play with this stuff a bit more, and ponder on my purchase. I've been using it to make pendants for necklaces, and it is very nifty. It sands well after baking, is semi-flexible from what I can tell (my pendants are pretty thin), and seems to hold paints (I've just been using acrylic with a glossy topcoat) relatively well. I looked up baking directions online... and when you bake it there is a definite toxic odor smell... but turns out nice, and the home oven baking concept is really convenient. Still no sign of drying on the block, and it still kneads into a good smooth texture. ((Bake in a preheated 275° F (130° C) oven for 15 minutes per 1/4" (6 mm) of thickness.))
UPDATE 2: So, it has now been a few years (Bought in 2011, and now it is 2014). I had originally played with my Sculpey for a while and then moved on to different creative endeavors, only to discover it again last week. It was in the plastic zippered bag that I stored it in, and what remained of the block seemed pretty hard at first... but upon kneading it quickly softened. It was like new. It sculpted and baked up like it always had. I was shocked and amazed. So much so that I felt I needed to update this review. This is some cool stuff. Even if you get bored with it and only wander back to it a few years later, it will be just like new. I'm just amazed.
Super Sculpey Fun Time

I'm one of those artists who's taken it upon himself to play with the pure beauty of vinyl toys and warp it to my twisted heart's desire. *insert evil laugh*
For what I do, this stuff is amazing. It allows me to customize the original form of whatever base I'm using to create something entirely new. For example, Funko's DIY Pops! Start off as blank slates and when I'm finished, they become superheros, villains, whatever I wish.
I also use this clay to create characters of my own design from scratch, and it's durability allows me to mold it without an issue for resin casting.
It's soft by design and is extremely easy to manipulate. Once you oven bake it, it becomes the consistency of ceramic, and becomes strong. Can it still break? Yeah, everything can, but it will hold its shape without a hitch while on display (just don't throw your sculptures or customized pieces at the wall or the floor).
My only issue with this product is getting a bad batch. The idea of a bad batch is relative, but generally, it's when the clay is really tough. If you press your thumb and you have to add a lot of pressure to make an dent, you've got a batch that's starting to dry out and it will be a pain to use.
I honestly can't stress how much I love this stuff.
Cheers

I love Super Sculpey. It is a fantastic medium to use as a base for sculptures. It is incredibly pliable and does not harden out too much over time- it can be worked to a very pliable consistency after only a few seconds. It is also very good that it comes in 1 pound because it is easy to go through a lot of it if you are working on a larger sculpture. I have used this for years and don't have a negative thing to say about it.
