Product Description

The Silky KatanaBoy is a two-handed, professional, heavy-duty folding saw with a 19-4/5 inch blade. Can easily compete with a chainsaw. Compared with the Katana, the legendary Japanese samurai sword, it is the largest folding saw on the market today. The long, well-balanced, taper-ground blade with an impulse-hardened, non-set tooth design provides extended working reach, faster cutting and handles large limbs and trunks with no effort. The non-slip, two-handed, rubberized cushioned handle provides a sure and comfortable grip even in the most difficult operating conditions. Suitable for serious tasks like cutting large timber and tree trunks. Exceptional design, strength, balance and superior finish quality. Comes with a sturdy nylon shoulder bay with Velcro fastening and a pocket for replacement blades.

Very useful niche item with some drawbacks
by John Thomas (4 out of 5 stars)
November 20, 2017

I own a business that does wilderness trail construction and maintenance, and it's ended up being a very useful niche item for maintenance. When we're doing maintenance we carry a handful of cutting tools. A smaller gyokucho pull saw similar to this, a bowsaw, a pulaski, and a crosscut saw. Routinely before we got this, we'd have blowdown sizes that are too big for the gyokucho and bowsaw, but small enough the crosscut turns into a pain in the ass. As long as you understand what niche it's used for it's fantastic.

Cons are pretty self explanatory

It's expensive. We spend roughly $40 on a 14 inch pull saw. They last half the time that one of the katana boy blades does.

I don't much like the folding action design (especially since you're closing the blade onto your fingers). The safeties are kind of awkward, and realistically I think if they had a better handle design it'd fix a lot of the issues.

It's awkward to use on stuff under 6" in diameter and it's heavier than our smaller pull saw, but if you're doing trail clearing or cutting wood >6" but <16" it's a great purchase. The blade overall is very durable.

Very happy, a little traumatized, but happy.

Warning: this saw cuts through faster than youll ever expect. Every review about sharpness is 100% fact. I was cutting down a patch of buckthorn and just not paying attention to where my right hand was and like i mentioned, the blade zipped through before i could react and bit right into my index finger, instantly exposing more of my internal workings than i ever want to see again. Holy bloody mess.

I tied the digital up tight and decided to keep working with one hand. Sure enough, a half hour later I fell a total of about twenty buckthorn trees...single handed! This saw is silent and lethal. Very happy, a little traumatized, but happy.

Oh my Lord !!!!!!! By the power if Greyskull !!!!!!!!!!!

This thing is huge (very light for it's size, though).....it's beautiful...(cue tear)

Well built, but you handle it as if it was worth $5,000 because the saw is so sharp and huge you are scared that you will cut your hand off at any moment. It's glorious.

You have the confidence that you can quick your job and become a lumberjack with this in your hand. Your beard will grow 5mm just by touching this thing. If you go camping a lot and you are always the fire wood collector, this is a must. Designed for cutting logs/ thick stuff, a little over kill for kindling branches.

A different way to cut trees
by Daniel P. Schwee (5 out of 5 stars)
June 13, 2014

My wonderful Homelite 1978 chain saw finally failed, but instead of replacing it, I bought the Katanaboy. It probably takes 5 times the effort to cut than the chain saw, but, considering there is no setup, starting, fueling, oiling, and noise, it's a pretty clean and quiet way to handle most of my tree cutting chores. If you're cutting down a large tree, or many many smaller ones, then a chain saw is better, but if you have the occasional 10 inch limb to saw up, then the Katanaboy is ready to go to work without any carb adjustments!

By the way, I'm 63 and have a bad back, so I'm probably on the weak side for someone doing tree work, so don't think you have to be really strong to get results from this saw.

Make sure you wear leather gloves (leather won't stop the teeth but it helps) and if you need to steady the limb you are cutting, keep your hands about a foot away from the cut, because Silky saws will glide through flesh very quickly. It actually takes some time and practice to get to know the saw. You need to be gentle and straight with the forward stroke, because you don't want to bend the blade, and let the modest weight of the saw dig into the wood on the return (cutting) stroke. I find myself setting up the wood that I cut even more carefully than when I use a chain saw, just so I can be sure to keep my hands away from the blade.

Because there is no engine to gas up and start when using the Katanaboy, I find myself getting to my wood cutting tasks a little more often. If I have a few minutes before dinner, I'll go and do some wood cutting. When I use a chain saw - it's always more of a production to get the saw ready to go, so I have to wait until I have a large block of time to get started.

I also bought a Silky Zubat saw for smaller trimming jobs, and for easy carrying while up in a tree. If you want a Silky saw to rip through good sized limbs, though, the Katanaboy is definitely the model you want.

If I need to cut up a 3 foot tree trunk, I'll be renting a large chain saw. (Oh, I might try to cut through a three foot trunk with the Katanaboy once just to say I did it.) But how often do you need to cut up a 3 foot tree trunk?

The Katanaboy blade can be sharpened, and I plan to buy the file and learn how to do that, just as I learned how to sharpen the chain saw. I don't know when I'll need to do that, but I'm fairly sure it will not be as frequently as I sharpened the chain saw.

I definitely recommend this saw, but can't emphasize safety enough. If you are done cutting, fold it up. Don't let it lay around with the blade exposed. Someone might step on it, or you might grab for it without paying attention and cut your fingers. It's quick and easy to fold and unfold, so there's really is no excuse for laying it down with the blade exposed.

And yes, you do feel like a Samurai when using it.

Truly a chainsaw alternative
by Tiamat (5 out of 5 stars)
May 18, 2017

Well I decided on 500 instead of the 650 because of weight and honestly cost. 99.00 shipped was too good to pass up.

I had a chance to use this and all I can say is WOW! I just can't get over the ease of which this goes through wood. I had a steep hillside and needed to clear some saplings ranging from 2"-6" . While I have a chainsaw

I figured this was a perfect opportunity to try it out. In 45 minutes I had finished! In one pull I was taking out 2" saplings! The 6" were 6 or 8 pulls . Best part is I never touched the ground with my stihl 461 24" blade. I would of ruined it and honestly the hill was very steep.

The main reason I purchased this was to process wood while camping / bushcrafting, but honestly I keep it in my truck now in case I come across a tree across the road. It's that efficient and effective. Honestly if I find it on sale again I will buy as many as I can and give them as birthday or Christmas gifts.

I could go on and on about it.

Awesome big tool
by PONDI (5 out of 5 stars)

Awesome big tool, believe me. We put it to the test on a mango and avocado trees pruning and it tackled branches up to 7" with ease. Even the muscle work out was fun because of the immediate gratification we got due to the fast and "clean" cut it produced. Another important fact is that there is no noise, danger of balancing with a chain saw in your hands, chain oil mess and repeated fuel refills. I owned several Silky products, they are a bit pricey but worth every penny and save you money and time in the long run. Great tool.

Highly recommend for trail workers. All my friends want one now too!
by S.L. (5 out of 5 stars)

This saw is a beast for trail clearing! All my friends want one now. Used it recently on a trail reroute project that required cutting about 10 small trees and a couple downed trees in the 12-14" range. Blasts right through them. The trail project was 5.5 miles from the nearest road, with a 2200' vertical climb. So much easier to carry this long distances than a chainsaw. Swap out frequently with a partner and you can clear some good deadfall quickly.

Still not a replacement for a chainsaw if you have lots of large deadfall to clear, but it's great otherwise. Light enough to easily carry, and can be strapped to a pack or hydration pack. Or just toss over your shoulder in the carrying case if you are hiking/riding out to clear just a few things.

Highly recommend for trail work and keeping trails open and clear. After I brought mine out to a trail project, everyone wanted to use the "BFS". Big F----ing Saw. I suspect my local MTB club is going to buy at least one for projects where a chainsaw is tough to get in (plus chainsaws require certified operator, chaps, wedges, spare chain, fuel, bar oil, etc). This saw can replace a chainsaw for deadfall trees up to about 14" without the need for certified operators (in our area at least).

Highly recommend despite the $$$$$ cost. Already paid for itself over hauling a chainsaw 11 miles round trip for one project.

simply awesome tool. So
by Ken C (4 out of 5 stars)

Bought a Silky pole saw, simply awesome tool. So, I ordered this (I have issues with buying tools) and this just seemed to cool to pass up. It is.

I just went out and cut a few branches, too cool, kinda fun, and it works. These guys are great. Folds and comes in sheath with strap. put it in the truck, RV or motorcycle/ATV - just plain cool. I suggest anyone who works in and around shrubs, trees, etc: HVAC, plumbing, Irrigation, cutting grass, emergency services, police, ambulance, we all should have one of these accessible.

I do not give 5 stars, unless there is an issue and customer service is outstanding. This is a 4.5 tool.

Chainsaw on a stick
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)
September 27, 2017

I purchased this saw after a massive storm hit our area and left hundreds of trees down on our hiking trails. Much of the mess was in wilderness, where chainsaws are not allowed. This saw filled the gap between Crosscut saw and pruning or bushcraft saw. It cut through limbs up to 6", including oak, with amazing ease and speed. One of my sawyers said, "That's a chainsaw on a stick!" It handles beautifully, being very nicely balanced and wicked sharp. It can be a dangerous tool if used carelessly, but properly used it is quite safe. I let 4 or 5 other crew members use the saw, and I think there will be at least 3 of them placing an order. This is truly an awesome saw. The case can even carry a spare blade, so if you are out in the wilderness, a field replacement is no problem. Bonus - you can pretend you are a ninja!

A tool in a class of its own...
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)
April 3, 2015

This is an amazing piece of equipment.

The Katanaboy is an unbelievably powerful cutting tool. I have used it on a variety of woods, wet and dry, and not only is its cutting capability sinister to behold, this saw can take a severe beating and still hold its wicked edge. I have arrogantly made cuts partially into sandy/rocky soils expecting some sacrifice to its sharpness, and accidently torqued the blade to an extreme angle expecting a permanent bend. It laughed at the abuse.

This saw will not out-perform a chainsaw by any means, but quite honestly, the amount of time spent servicing your two-stroke translates fairly evenly into the extra time it takes to pull this thing through a few trees (which, trust me, isn't much). It is also feather-light in comparison to it's capabilities. It would not be ridiculous to consider this saw for bushcraft use, based on it's weight and packability, however, it would be pure overkill. The Katanaboy is basically a folding cross-cut saw, with the benefit of modern materials, sharpening processes, and design.

I pair this with a Husqvarna all-purpose axe (which, in my opinion as an owner of axes from other Scandinavian manufacturers, is the best value on the axe market at this point in time). The 26" Husky actually fits perfectly in the Katanaboy's nylon case (which also cleverly includes a pocket for a replacement blade, which, honestly, you may only think you'll need if you're a Prepper...) to create a beautifully lightweight, packable kit. Add a pull-sled and a froe or maul, and I would seriously contend this combination could tackle the fuel needs of a cabin in the Minnesota winter.

On a side-note, this thing looks terrifying. We're talking home-defense capabilities because of fear-inspiring freakiness. It is something straight out of Mad Max. That is all.

Excellent value, and a blast to use.
