Product Description

HIGH-TECH OFFICE-BASED PRANK DEVICE. With the advent of the incessantly-beeping and easily-concealable Annoy-a-tron, ThinkGeek ushered in a new era of sophisticated office pranks sure to drive your friends and coworkers bonkers while you quietly enjoy the chaos you've unleashed. The Phantom Keystroker may look like a harmless flash drive, but it's actually a devious contraption of unlimited office-based torture. Simply discreetly attach the Phantom Keystroker to any extra USB port on your victim's computer, no drivers needed. The Keystroker emulates a keyboard and mouse and periodically makes random mouse movements, turns on/off the Caps Lock, and types out odd garbage text and phrases. A set of switches allow you to choose amongst these tortures or select all three. You can also set the time delay on a sliding scale between annoying "events." We recommend you don't set it too frequently to extend the agony. Your hapless friends will think their computers have been possessed or that they accidentally downloaded malware. As they admit defeat and dial tech support, you can rest easy with the amusement of a prank well played. Note: The Keystroker will NOT take actions such as00111001000 - oh, hilarious guys - As I was saying, it will not take actions such as clicking the mouse button, and it cannot trigger the return, backspace, or delete key. We're here to prank, not to run up someone's credit card bill, submit any forms, or wipe out their hard work.

  • Attach this evil prank device to your victim's computer and it makes random mouse movements and types out odd garbage text and phrases

Cheap, hilarious, and easy to get into trouble - be thoughtful!

Several folks here have mentioned that the "random text" isn't random. I pranked a co-worker in a corporate environment for over a week with the caps lock and scrolling features and it was awesome. Then I made the mistake of upping the ante and turning on the keyboard function. Don't. Just don't. Things escalate very quickly when messages like "I have all of your passwords" pop up while the IT guy is in the middle of running a virus scan for them.

This is a fantastic prank, and still easily the best $11 I have spent in a long, long time, but if you are using it in a business setting make sure to keep the keyboard feature off.

This is perfect, I placed it on my coworkers computer (Monitor USB ports, perfect), he didn't notice for 2 whole months, during that time he went through 3 replacement keyboards and still couldn't figure out why the caps lock would turn on an off. 😈

... in our office and I thought this would be great! It was

So we have quite the prank war going on in our office and I thought this would be great! It was... kind of. It was a lot of fun for awhile. They didn't know what was going on and it was quite amusing UNTIL it started typing that they had their passwords and stuff. So the guy called his wife and they were really frustrated and they lodged an HR complaint and it was a big to-do. I think without the typing words (especially those kind of words that are kind of scary) it would be hilarious (which it mostly was).

Great fun...while it lasts

My assistant and I make up the IT department for a large-sized restaurant group so we're used to going in 16 different directions at once to keep the fires out. This means on those rare occasions when it slows down, we tend to get very bored, very quickly.

When I saw this, I knew it was the perfect thing to fill those empty minutes between crises so I ordered a few. He and I share a long cubicle with him at one end, me at the other, backs towards the middle, about 12 feet apart. There is no way for me to access his 'puter without his knowledge, so I stayed late last night and plugged a USB extender into one of the lower ports on the back of his PC. I ran it behind his monitors then along the back side of his desk, added another extender, and was able to pop it out next to my tower.

I plugged in the Keystroker so it could load its' drivers, but left the features turned off. This morning, I waited until he was typing up a fairly lengthy email and turned on the Caps Lock and waited. My webcam is up on my cabinet facing back towards the room so nobody can sneak up on me, perfect for observing his frustrations. Sure enough, it must have taken him 10 minutes to compose his message, with a lot of back-spacing...hehehe.

I turned the Caps Lock off and switched on the mouse. For the next hour, he'd call over to me, "Hey come look at what my mouse is doing". As I turned around I'd switch it off, stare at his screens for a minute, mumble about him being off his rocker, then turn around and switch it back on.

Sounds perfect, right? Well, after switching the mouse on and off about 6 or 8 times, the switch broke! The little black speck in my picture is the "knob". Now I have no way to turn what I consider the best feature on and off.

Well I might have arguably gotten my $8 worth of fun just from this morning, I really think it should last longer than that.

For those unclear on how this operates, you have 3 features:
1) Caps Lock - will toggle the Caps Lock key randomly when they are typing anything.
2) Keyboard - will insert random letters and sometimes words or phrases when they are typing.
3) Mouse - moves the mouse in a somewhat random pattern.

The frequency these occur is controlled by a dial to the left of the switches. From my brief usage, it ranges from every few seconds to every few minutes.

TL/DR:

Excellent concept and execution, poor quality materials. Depending on what you want it to do, it might be worth the price of entry.

Just my 2c worth...hope it helps.

This is great fun at the office.

This is a great little device. Everyone who sees it loves it. At first the typing seems random, then it starts sending messages "Why don't you talk to me?"

The only warning I have comes by way of a story. I tried to use it to prank a guy who was on vacation. He gets in pretty early so I plugged it in the day before he got back so it would be in place when he got there. I forgot to set the timing wheel to it's highest setting so when he booted his computer he couldn't even log in. It kept typing stuff before he could finish logging in. So either set it to it's slowest setting or make sure they are logged in first.

If used properly, absolutely amazing & worth the money.

I am currently just a week past having started using this on a co-worker. It started with a simple test of placing this into his computer, with all settings enabled and the timer set towards the middle. At first I only heard a couple of "what the hecks", and then it escalated. As this device started to (randomly) type statements that made it appear as if the computer was actually talking to him. While this was very much coincidence, it couldn't have been any better.

At this point he has replaced his keyboard 3 times, ran multiple scans for viruses, malware, etc. Little does he know that I only left it plugged in the first time for about 2 hours. Today, it has been plugged back in but with a USB extender cable and then hidden inside of the case with other cables as to make it more discrete. At present he is leaving a Word document open and is actively asking it questions, e.g. "Who are you?" & "What do you want".

I honestly have to keep leaving the room so as to not pee myself laughing. But, this definitely is all determined by the person you are targeting and how well you can hide the device. Overall, great purchase and worth every penny.

I've never laughed so hard in the office. The I.T. Department may hate me because of all the calls they've been getting about people hacking into their computer, but it was so worth it. Totally worth the $10

Great gag
by JamesQMurphy (5 out of 5 stars)
December 23, 2012

This worked like a charm! For the first victim, I only set the device to move the mouse, and not very often. It was great... he was keeping a list of the times that the mouse moved, and trying to figure out what "malware" was doing it. Of course, since this is a hardware device, there was no malware to detect. I eventually let him in on the gag. For the second victim, who was one of those I'm-better-than-everyone programmers, I put it on all three annoyances. It was the random text that got him -- he kept yelling for people to stop "remoting into his session." After a few hours and several reboots, he finally found it. The third victim, who really knew his stuff, pulled up a list of device drivers and identified the device in 15 minutes.

Only two suggestions:
1. Expect that you may lose the device. In my case, Victim #2 kept it, but then used it on someone else, so I was able to retrieve it.
2. If you can get your hands on a USB extension cord, use it. It's much more difficult to locate if the victim only sees a bunch of USB cables going into the back of his/her PC.

Great Prank to use on Laptop Docks/Desktops
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)
January 22, 2019

Pulled this one out on one of our interns who had pranked us previously with some video memes on our desktops. Plugged it into the back of his laptop dock and had him thinking his laptop was broken. Let him in on the prank before he went to IT about it.

A few thoughts:

As others have said, the random text is a bit too obvious.

The mouse thing is not random and just moves the pointer to the top left of the screen, its good enough to confuse less savvy users though.

The Caps lock flipping is probably my favorite feature.

I wish the text feature just inserted a random character in among the characters typed by the user.

I would also like it more if the interval timing wheel had a random time option to make it less obvious.

My Co-Workers now hate me!

This thing is hilarious!!! Luckily I work for a small business where our IT guys are my buddies and are in on the gag. The time delay dial works like a charm and I'm never suspected lol. I primarily use the mouse feature and it's funny seeing my co workers reactions when the mouse arrow starts to go haywire. IT tell them they downloaded a virus or have ransomware on their computers and they freak. We all get a good laugh and I've only been slapped once.
