Steripen: Where Art Thou?by James Cormier-Chisholm (1 out of 5 stars)

Well, after the light malfunctioned on this pen, went through about 25 emails with the company over a 2 month period, where it was finally determined that I had to return the malfunctioned pen. However, after returning this item (it has been two weeks since I returned this item), I still haven't heard back from the company with respect to a replacement item. Not very happy with this company.
It was better than using 100 small plastic bottles to drink

I drank the tap water in Africa after applying the SteriPen and never got sick (almost two years ago) so I guess it worked. It was better than using 100 small plastic bottles to drink, use my netti pot and brush the teeth. After using water bottle filters in many forms I found this to be easier to carry and possibly more effective against viruses. I used a clear quart nalgene bottle with the pen so I could see that it was working. simple
Good but the Batteries are Inconvenient

We used this steripen on a 5 day extended hike, in concert with the prefilter. It worked well and we didn't get sick drinking the water. However, the batteries (CR123) are a pain. They're expensive and you have to carry a spare set in case they run out.
I recently went out and bought the Steripen with the USB charger which I can charge using a Solar powered backup battery. I would use the battery powered version for short trips but for extended trekking...I would use the USB version.

I bought this in 2012 for backpacking the Apalacian Trail. It died after 3 days. Possibly the battery it came with was old??. There was a complicated system with flashing lights to sort out the problem- not user friendly when you oare on the trail. I sent it back home and used aqua mira drops for the rest of the 2 month trip and that worked well. Now with new batteries it seems to be working so will give it a try again. Will always have a backup in case as well as spare batteries. I was super upset at the time and meant to return it but never got around to it.

I have used the SteriPEN in Mongolia, Chile, Argentina and all across the Rockies and never had a problem! I do SAR work and when I have my SeriPEN I can carry far less water with me with no risk.
PROS - Simple, Works, Well Made
CONS - Hard to see the light in the daylight, non-standard battery (I carry an extra)
LOVE IT - A rugged outdoor small padded case would be a big plus for this unit.

Unit is made with glass and will need protection in the outdoors; I bought 2 of these units one battery operated; 1 that recharges on USB cable. Been using the rechargeable more; Takes a little time to get used to using the light.
A rugged outdoor small padded case would be a big plus for this unit. It won't take much abuse in the outdoors; & to valuable to risk damage.
Get your own spring water without the plastic bottle

I can't take a trip to the mountains without bringing the SteriPEN along. When I first filled up my water bottle from a stream, purified the water, then drank it, everyone in my family thought I was insane. But after a little work I got my family to try it and they all thought it was the best water they ever tasted. Now every time we pass a creek and the kids are thirsty we break out the SteripPEN.
The SteriPEN is compact, easy to use, and the batteries last a long time. It was everything that I expected from reading the item description.

If you remember the wonderful ways to purify water in the Boy Scouts, (read Halazone tablets, yechh) this makes survival a step easier. Never know when your water will be doubtful. These little gadgets are the answer. Haven't had to use yet, but testing was simple and easy. The price is perfect for peace of mind, and it really is easy to lug.

This is a good item to have for emergencies. Our power goes out frequently where we live and it is nice to know we have a water purifier on hand. I like the size. It is small enough to carry.
I had issues with it not turning on

When it works, it seems to work fine. But for some reason about 50% of the time I tried to use it, the light wouldn't turn on. To make things worse, it was pretty difficult to see the light when it was on in direct sunlight, so I kept trying to use it in the shade to determine if the light was on.
