Leaks and mold began to grow
by Kindle Customer (1 out of 5 stars)

The concept is great but workmanship not so much. A seam along the edge has apparently been leaking. There is now mold growing the outside case. Where I've been putting my head. And breathing. Awesome. Unfortunately I'm past my window to return by about 2 weeks. Money well spent down the drain. Don't purchase.

MDF1006 - Waterbase Pillow Standard, 20 x 28...
by Carol M. (5 out of 5 stars)
July 20, 2016

This is the third MedFlow water based pillow that I've had. I bought the first one in the mid-nineties when they were fairly new and the chiropractor I had at the time recommended it. I've been so sold on these pillows since that first one that this one I just purchased is my third. The first two each lasted approximately 10 years. And I haven't used any other pillow since. It is the only pillow that I've had that allows me a good night's sleep without waking up in the morning with neck or shoulder pain.

Now with that said if you've never had a water based pillow before and you're thinking of trying one let me give you some insight from experience.

If you're someone who wants to just pull the pillow out of the box, fill it with water and expect to sleep like a baby the first night you could find yourself disappointed. You may need some patience with this pillow if you don't get a good night's sleep the first night. You also may need some attention to detail. First you need to understand that it may take a few night of adjusting the water in the pillow to get it to the point that it is comfortable for you. If you don't have the patience then you'll end up frustrated and disappointed that you spent money on it. Second, if you find you do need to adjust the pillow you may want to pay attention to how much water you add or remove from the pillow when you're adjusting it. As little as an ounce of water added or removed will significantly change how the pillow feels, at least that is what I've found over the years of having them. You have to be willing to play with to get it just right. The good news is once you reach that point you won't have to do anything more.

I've had people ask about the water inside and mold and what have you. I just emptied my second pillow before throwing it out. There was not one sign of mold or any smell to the water when I emptied it and the pillow was as I stated earlier about 10 years old. Unlike one reviewer's recommendation to use a little bleach, I have never added anything to the water and the water always comes out as clean as was the day I added it. Actually, I would hesitate to add anything additional to the water whereas it may damage the inside water chamber over time and potentially reduce the life of the pillow but that is just my opinion. Both my first and second Mediflow pillows lasted 10 years of every night use and were only replaced due to leaks they developed as a result of age.

I just received my third pillow yesterday and slept on it for the first night last night. The quality of these pillows is still there and once I filled it to where it was comfortable for me, I slept soundly and got up this morning without one ounce of neck or shoulder pain. I can't recommend them enough to people providing they understand that sometimes a little patience provides a huge payback in feeling good in the morning when you get up.

One other thing mentioned by other reviewers was that the pillow had a slight smell to it when it was removed from the box. The pillow I received had no noticeable smell. I filled it, put it on the bed and slept on it the first night without a problem.

I'd without hesitation give this pillow more than 5 stars if I could! I hope this helps anyone whose considering purchasing one.

Recommended by this doctor!!!

I'm an ER doctor and have been suffering from worsening cervical radiculopathy over the last 6 months. I bought this pillow as a last ditch effort before actually seeing a specialist myself and getting an MRI/injections, etc.

After two nights the pain was markedly better, and after a month the nerve pains shoooting down my arm stopped completely.

I had switched back to my lighter weight pillow and been doing OK, until a 9 day trip to California had my radiculopathy back to way worse than before. A week on my water pillow and the pain is gone!!

I'll not make the same mistake again! I'm worsening another one for our beach condo now!

Best pillow ever
by Billy W. Harp (5 out of 5 stars)

Thankfully, I overlooked the 1 star reviews, ordered the Mediflow pillow, and am pain free after 2 nights of sleep on it. The negatives are easily overcome by taking the pillow out of the plastic bag (which gets rid of the crinkling one lady experienced), looking on back of the cardboard insert, and following directions. I filled mine with 10cups of lukewarm tap water (so the pillow isn't cold as one person said) and removed the air as instructed, then put the cap on (which removes any leaking problems). I put a regular pillowcase on it and was done. This is by far the best pillow anyone could want. The 10 cups of water was perfect for me, and definitely not heavy. The pillow supports my neck no matter how I sleep on it, and yet it is soft and comfortable. Best of all, I wake up pain free. So, yes, buy this Mediflow pillow right away, and follow the instructions on the back of the cardboard, and you'll have the best sleep ever.

Good pillow with faulty instructions
by Randy B. (4 out of 5 stars)
March 28, 2017

It was an unexpected struggle for us to get this ready for use.

The pillow is a combination of a cushion and a parallel bag for water. The instructions show the method of standing the pillow on its end on a chair, and firmly pushing on the upper part to get out the unwanted air pocket after using the provided funnel to pour the water in. The test for seeing if the air pocket has been squeezed out is supposed to be checking to see if the pillow sloshes - If it does, the instructions say to do the process over. We did this numerous times over the course of two days, and no matter how much or little water we poured in, and how hard the two of us together pushed to squeeze out the air pocket, the pillow would still slosh loudly like an old water bed. We wrote to the company explaining our problem. They replied quickly, but basically just repeated the same instructions we already had.

We did finally find the solution:-- Test the pillow ON THE BED where you're going to use it. Unlike what the instructions say, the test is NOT to expect no sloshing if you're just holding the pillow - it will always slosh. The test is putting it on the bed, and seeing if there's any annoying sloshing when you lay down, put your head on it, and try it out.

It was a drag we hassled with this so long simply because the instructions are not accurate and should be rewritten.

Now that the pillow has been used for about two months, my wife is happy enough with it, finds it firm and supportive without being too unyielding. It's not necessarily The Best Pillow she's ever used, but feels it's doing the job she expected.

SO - the lesson is: Test for sloshing with the pillow in position on your bed, not in the kitchen where you've filled it with water.

Pillow is great for chronic neck pain
by PolarBaker (5 out of 5 stars)

I have had years of a shoulder, up my neck, and into my head muscle pain that I've sought treatment for from Physical Therapists, Doctors, and Chiropractors - including pain meds, muscle relaxers, yoga, meditation, and on and on and so forth. Things worked for a time - but never long. Also tried expensive pillows, PT-recommended pillows, new mattress, and lavender scented everything (did nothing for the pain but was to help relax to fall asleep).

This pillow has made an amazing difference almost immediately. I actually sleep through the night now. I fall asleep within moments of laying down. No more ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen, melatonin, hot packs, cold packs or reading for hours before bed.

For someone with chronic, long-time neck muscle pain, this pillow is well worth trying out. Has worked wonders for me.

BEWARE OF MOLD!!!
by Marina (1 out of 5 stars)
September 27, 2017

This pillow grew black mold that was visible on outside material and also dark discoloration on inside of the pillow that is I am sure also mold but I am not ripping it apart for fear of greater exposure to mold spores. Sadly that was the pillow my son was using and he being a teenager did know any better until his allergy symptoms got so bad. We now know why, and the pillow has been removed from his room.

I contacted customer service today and will update with their response, as I am very curious to see what they will say about this health hazard!

I was sold a USED pillow.
by CareS (1 out of 5 stars)
October 26, 2017

I was expecting a NEW, NEVER BEEN USED pillow. What I received was disgusting and unacceptable. When I opened the box, the pillow was covered in hair! The pillow I received was clearly USED by someone and sent back as a return. Nowhere in the product description did it indicate customers may receive a pillow that was returned by another customers! Gross.

Had been having a great deal of morning neck pain as well as frequent ...
by D. Spicer (5 out of 5 stars)

Had been having a great deal of morning neck pain as well as frequent related headaches for several months. I decided to see what alternatives were available with regard to pillows and or other types of support for my neck and head. I spent several days just researching pillows. I have always used traditional down or fiberfill pillows. Seemed that there quite a few claims by manufacturers promising the best night's sleep ever with their pillow. I came across this Mediflow Water Pillow and was intrigued by the research that had been done by Johns Hopkins. I decided to give it a try. It seemed like a logical approach to head and neck support. I followed the instructions and started using it the same day it arrived. I don't mean to sound like a commercial but I've had absolutely NO neck or head pain since then. It has been a Godsend. I'm extremely grateful that it was the solution I needed.

Did not help with neck pain but rather intensified it.
by Kim (1 out of 5 stars)
February 19, 2018

It's different and "cool", it's like sleeping on a water bed and I used to love those. *But* to say that this helps with neck pain is not true (for me). I have nerves in my neck that cause my pains, I had one trusty down pillow that was my BEST friend for sleeping with this condition and I was hoping this would be just as good if not better! For the $50 price tag I was just hoping for more. If I had general neck pain... Maybe, because the other reviews seem decent enough... It's possible my pain is a little too much for this pillow to help, I don't know. I'm definitely debating on returning this, though.
