Works well but not what I'd expected and may eventually fail?

I wanted a device to hold my iPhone attached to my guitar. This does that.

My only concern is that the way it attaches is to clamp onto the strings at the top of the headstock, above the nut.

This is a problem because I play a Stratocaster electric guitar which uses a tremolo bridge and which has been modified to allow the strings to more freely stretch from the tuners, over roller trees, across a rollerball nut. Unfortunately, this design inhibits that free movement!

A second problem is that I hang my guitar on a guitar stand that uses a hooked claw at it's top to hold the guitar up by the curves beneath it's head stock. Unfortunately, this is also where this device is located and because of this, I can no longer hang my guitar on it's stand!

I do remove and reattach it but because the clasp on this device that clamps it's metal pieces together over the strings is very insubstantial plastic, I expect that it will eventually break causing this $20 device to be useless.

Other than these problems, it works well enough as described, to hold my iPhone attached to my guitar. For this reason, I may eventually try to it to use a clamp for attaching it to the wood instead of the strings.

The hinged metal, over string clamp was a surprise. Look carefully at the photo to see this. Between the two gray metal, hinged pieces are two strips of rubber material so that it doesn't vibrate when attached to the strings. These flat metal parts are held together where the plastic parts of the clamp slip over them and are held in place by a small black plastic tab, seen in the middle of the photo. It seems to be delicate to me? When that tab is used many times, removing and attaching to the strings, I suspect it will eventually break off. Buyer beware!

Best Product for Guitarists since the apps themselves

I own an iPhone 3GS and it fits in the Guitar Sidekick beautifully. It's snug and secure. One big time plus is the phone can remain in its case and still fit fine in the Sidekick. There's nothing more annoying than having to remove your phone from its protective case just to fit in a dock or something!

I use several guitar apps, to include TabToolKit, GuitarToolKit, etc. I was able to handily tune my guitar with the phone in its mount. Another plus.

The phone also sits high enough above the fret board so it wont interfere with your fingering. Again, another plus.

So to conclude, the Sidekick holds my iPhone securely, reading tablature is a breeze when it's mounted, and it doesn't interfere with playing at all.

My only complaint is that I needed to literally use a butterknife to open up the clamp when I took it out of the package. I thought it was superglued closed! Beyond that minor inconvenience, I highly recommend this mount for anyone that uses their smartphone as a guitar aid. 5 big stars!

Bye-bye, music stand, hello free hands!

Although the idea is great, it does not work well with classical guitars where the strings wrap over tightly and through the headstock. Also the larger phones are somewhat heavy as I have an iPhone 6 and it does not necessarily stay positioned quite as well as I'd like it to. The main disappointment I have in the product is that it came with no warranty and I fear the clip part which is made of some sort of plastic may not last long as there is quite a bit of pressure on it once it's fastened.
Are replacements available and/or guaranteed? At roughly $20 I would sure hope so. Otherwise, and if so then it's awesome and I would give it five stars!

Awesome Guitar Player Gift! Way better than getting pics or anything!

I bought this as a gift, and I will note it feels like you have to force it a little and that it may break, but then when I cousin did it, it worked fine. He loved the gift and this is an awesome gift for guitar players!!

I got it in conjunction with a lavalier microphone that works with cell phones. Awesome for quick recording sessions, great for looking up tabs, or displaying a set list, or doing some unique video recording.

Useless

This thing doesn't exactly have a "clamp". It has a flat strip folded in half that clips over your strings. So if your strings don't lay in a flat plane (I don't know a guitar where they do) or if the distance between the nut and the nearest tuner isn't big enough, this is useless.

great. but...

the phone is too heavy for a ukulele--even the larger tenor uke. i never realized that the ukes--even the big baritone--are so light that the weight of the iphone 6 plus (not the holder) is so heavy compared to the ukes that it throws them off balance. i'm giving it to my son who plays guitar. if i was still playing guitar, i'd be using it. it does what it's advertised to do.

It has held up pretty well.

I have been using this weekly for a year and it's holding up really well. The plastic piece (though I was afraid) hasn't broken yet - though I tend to just leave the clip on the guitar all the time. I unscrew the phone holder to put the guitar in the case... It has held up pretty well.... I thought I lost a piece the other day, and decided it was worth the $20 to just buy a new one if I needed to.

It's hard to get a product like this that works

Just beware this doesn't work on my Taylor acoustic. It's hard to get a product like this that works. I don't really use it on my electric but I would agree it tends to cause the guitar to go out of tuen.

Works!

Works as advertised. Occasionally pulls the hi e string off the neck, but I've learned to be more gentle. I'm on an iPhone 6 Plus, for those of you wondering if it will fit.
